Tell me your favorites from 1975 - this will probably be a part one this year as there are too many to choose from.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
@mazzysmusicI do a quick call out in this video - only because it occurred to me 1975 was about the year you were in record stores right? Would love to hear what it was like working in a record store when such amazing albums were released.

• Joni Mitchell's Top 10...
The 'Hissing of Summer Lawns' is one of my favourite albums from any year.
😊 Excellent choice.
As a 14 year old in 1975, two of my favourites that year were Skyhooks' ' Ego is not a Dirty Word' and Alice Cooper's 'Welcome to my Nightmare'. Thanks for sharing your favourites.
Aaaah Skyhooks!!! Of course!
Physical Graffiti needs to be in there it was the second largest seller of 1975 and went straight to number 1 on its Feb release date. Cheers 👍
Yes you are right!! Maybe my on my part 2!😊
Linda Ronstadt is my all time favorite.
Yay!! I’m collecting her entire catalog and almost there
Nice mix, Katie. I had no idea Split Enz goes back to the mid-seventies. You have plenty of folk and country, whereas mine was prog-heavy, but growing up in my mid-teens in the UK in the early seventies, it was all about prog back then for me. These days, I like a lot of the stuff you showed. That Abba comp is epic! Cheers, Andy
Seriously Andy - check out Mental Notes from Split Enz. Turn it up. You will be blown away.
Great video! 1975 was a great year for me and some of these albums brought back a lot of memories. Especially love Pieces of the Sky by Emmylou Harris. Keep up the good work.
🤩
Thanks for the recommendations - Andrew Gold, Linda Ronstadt and Emily Lou Harris's second 1975 album (I know Pieces of The Sky)
For me, 1975 is the year of Mamma Mia and SOS - 2 great Abba singles and Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn
Aside from the other usual classics - Dylan, Springsteen, Zeppelin, Floyd - two of my other 1975 favourites are
Original Soundtrack from 10cc (including I'm Not In Love and Life Is A Minestrone)
and my top fave for 1975 - Cockney Rebel's Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) - that spanish guitar solo still gets me
and a very good album The Best Years of Our lives.
Aaahhh 10cc - brilliant!
Some to consider for part 2
Richard and Linda Thompson- Pour down like silver
The Band - Southern cross, northern lights
Tony Bennett and Bill Evan
Tomita - pictures at an Exhibition
Wayne Shorter - Native dancer
10cc - The original soundtrack
Tangerine Dream - Rubicon
Bob Marley - Live (could be featured in your live episode)
Keith Jarrett - The Koln concert
Skyhooks- Living in the 70s or ego is not a dirty word
The Carpenters - Horizon
Great suggestions. I did look for my Koln Concerts to include in this one but couldn’t find! 😊
I love your videos. I get smile when you say "day-boo!" It pleases my American ears. Keep up the good work.
Haha
look forward to part 2! :)
😊
Heck yes on 'The Main Course'. This album's opener always gets cued up at monumental volume when I throw this album on the TT. Never have I been left in a bad mood after absorbing that great track. The production/sound quality on that record is also top notch! 😊
Agree about the 💯 production!😊
You're absolutely correct! I was in my late 20s-early 30s during the '70s and have often said that was THE best and DEFINITIVE period of rock/pop (top 40?) and other music for the masses. I say it that way only because I also listen to a LOT of Classical & Jazz which many/most people do not. Though it's just a little earlier (1969), I recently got a new AAA pressing of Crosby, Stills & Nash.
Nice!!😊
0:00 - Intro, Happy 2025 New Year, thanks and introduction to share the 1975's favourite albums
1:34 - Bee Gees "Main Course" (RSO Records, 1975)

5:28 - Andrew Gold "Andrew Gold" (Asylum Records, 1975)
7:42 - Linda Ronstadt "Prisoner In Disguise" (Asylum Records, 1975)
10:12 - Emmylou Harris "Pieces Of The Sky" (Reprise Records, 1975)
10:43 - Emmylou Harris "Elite Hotel" (Reprise Records, 1975)
12:37 - Split Enz "Mental Notes" (White Cloud/Mushroom, 1975)
13:57 - Patti Smith "Horses" (Arista Records, VOA collection, 1975)
15:22 - Elton John "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" (DJM/ MCA, 1975)
16:56 - Joni Mitchell "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" (Asylum Records, 1975)
18:57 - Sherbet "In concert" (Festival Records/Infinity, 1975)
21:05 - ABBA "The Best Of Abba" (Entertainment Australia, 1975)
22:40 - Outro, end of a part one about 1975:)
Andrew Gold - best known for 2 tremendous songs. “Thank you for being a friend” & “Lonely Boy”
And actually not two of his best ? IMO 😂
@@cordesrecords I've just been going through a rediscovery of Andrew Gold and Dean Friedman. How Can This Be Love is a great AG song, but it's not from 1975. What a year, but my God, crazy that it was 50 years ago now!!
Was so glad to see A Night at the Opera and Captain Fantastic in your list. I haven’t posted a video in 7 years but I’m getting the urge to tackle this topic. Great video!!
Thanks! Do it!! 🎉
what a great period to be a teenager. Imagine every week, theere was another album you HAD to have and that in 20 years , so many of these records would gain iconic status, the most influential music, the most innovative...etc. how lucky we were...
I know, right?!!
A very fine year indeed! Great to see Joni and Patti there as they would be my top two. Blood on the Tracks after that, I guess - one of Dylan's best. Speaking of Bob, Joan Baez's Diamonds and Rust came out the same year. And gotta give some love to the Queen of Mope: Janis Ian's Between the Lines (the one with 'At Seventeen' on it).
I had Janis Ian out to do but in the end had to cull. Part 2 for sure will feature that.
Very cool group of records, 75 was a great year, I discovered Elton John, Queen, KISS and many others so much great music on the radio, thanks for sharing have a great year!
So so good! 😊
Amazing! I haven't thought about Split Enz in 50 years, I really like that band, and Mental Notes.
Horses is my personal favorite of those you've featured here, Katie, followed closely by Joni. Thanks.
Dive back into Split Enz!
i was 10 years old back then i do rember some of albums you taiking about
😊
Hi Katie! I enjoyed your list which added a few titles to my search list(Andrew Gold, Split Enz).
I saw Sherbet twice & have several lps, including 1 when they renamed the band the Sherbs. I have never seen the In Concert lp.
Your passion & knowledge of the music is appreciated. Be well.
Hi Katie , Dave here from Kamloops 🇨🇦. Recent subscriber, immediately trust your taste. . I've recently purchased a turntable and have pulled out all of parents 60-70s collection and my 80s . Thank you for split enz highlight. The third record I've pulled from my 80s collection is 'waiata' - my ears thank you!....
😊 Thanks!
@@davecaswell4412aaah great Split Enz!
The Original Soundtrack by 10cc deserves an honorable mention.
Sure does😊
Another great video Katie. Keep up the great work. Happy New year and best wishes.
Thanks mate. Happy New Year to you. 🎉
Another informative video , brilliant channel , keep in keeping in for 25’
😊
Good to meet you. Enjoyed!✨🕯️🎶
Thank you 😊
What a cool video! 75 was 7 yrs before I came around but it sure is fantastic seeing so much great music at that time period! New sub btw! I do a small channel talking abut some of my records. Nothing like sitting down and listening to a good record 😃👍
Thanks! Appreciate the sub too 😊
Great picks, and a cool idea for a video as we start 2025. Your channel is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Your enthusiasm really comes through in your videos.
I found a good copy of The Bee Gees’ “Main Course” a couple of years ago. It was after that most recent documentary was released, and I became obsessed with the song ‘Wind of Change’ as it was featured prominently in that film. That song is an absolute gem. It’s a funky pre-disco number that points in the direction they would head in just a few years minus the abundance of falsetto.
Thanks so much Aron! And you are 💯 on the Bee Gees album. Such a sign of great disco things to come!’😊
Mental Notes is a great album. Also great call on Andrew Gold. Pub quiz points if you can name his Mum. 😊
😮 (googling)
Can only thank you a lot. Searched Apple Music and have a playlist with most of the artists. Except Elton and Joni M they were unknown for me. Amazing music the parts I have listen to.
😳
Interesting fact about ABBA: they have bought and organized a great music studio for the recording: Polar Studio. It was made in a former opera-house, with a great acoustic conditions. Led Zeppelin and Genesis have recorded their albums there too.
That IS an interesting Fact. Thank you
Summer Lawns is by far the best on your list. Steve Hackett's The Voyage of the Acolyte is easily the best album released in 75. Still perfect after all these years.
I’m embarrassed- I don’t know that!!
Ace of Wands 🌟
Saw ABBA at the SCG in the 70s. Pouring rain. And yes, it was one of my 1st albums!
I think these were also from that time....
Wish You Were Here
Rocky Horror Show ( I had the Australian Cast Album with Reg Livermore )
Venus and Mars
T.N.T.
Desolation Boulevard (Sweet )
A Trick of the Tail (Genesis)
😁🤷♂️
Fun!! So lucky you saw ABBA!!
@cordesrecords PS. Watching ABBA standing on a plastic chair in pouring rain wasn't actually as much fun as you'd imagine.... but on the bright side i also saw the other bands I mentioned.... except Wings 🤷♂️😁🙏
Excuse me for going a little off topic here, but the reference to Abba prompts me to mention I picked up the second album of Janne Schaffer this week (from 1974) who was a session guitarist for the band. It's a superb record and he's an absolute virtuoso on his instrument, which clearly he got little scope to demonstrate on his Abba work...good though they were, they ain't jazz fusion! Sherbet will be well known to people of a certain age in the UK as their single Howzat seemed to be in the charts for an interminably long time.
Oh thanks for mentioning Jane Schaffer. I will check out!! 😊
Saw Split Enz at the Bottom Line in New York and own EVERYTHING they've released!
You and I could be friends !! I’m very jealous.
I have 5/10 of these in my collection. I would also be throwing in Girls on The Avenue by Richard Clapton, Here We Are by Ted Mulry Gang and Welcome To My Nightmare by Alice Cooper.
Totally agree about Main Course, amazing album - incredible songs and vocals. Will have to check out some Emmylou Harris 👍
Aaaah the Ted Mulry Gang!! ❤😊
This list confirms my belief that Queen are the rock band for people who don't like rock music!!!
I note the absence of 1975's BEST album which is Black Sabbath's "Sabotage". THIS album was NEVER going to be on THIS list, was it!!!!
No. But I promise I will at least listen to it. 😂😂
@@cordesrecords If you do listen to "Sabotage" then let me recommend that you start with the songs "The Writ" or "Meglomania"
Best regards
Hi Katie, I am new to the TH-cam record community and loving your channel and the information you are sharing. Can you tell me where you get the sleeve covers for the gatefold albums in Australia - I have been living under a rock and did not know they existed - they are a must have!
Also, as mentioned, I am new to this community and loving some of the other channels out there. My other current favourite would be Lost Mixed Tapes but would love to watch some other Australian content, are there any other Australian channels out there you recommend.
Hi thanks! Spin Chemistry are good from Melb I think. I’m not super familiar with Aussie TH-camrs but they are out there :) but there is a great NZ one called Buttery Digs
@ I will get onto Spin Chemistry asap and look up Buttery Digs - thanks for the recommendations 😊
'Spellbound' on that Split Enz debut album is one of my favorite art rock tracks of all time! Phil Judd was an odd cat😺and what they did with the mellotron in that track was so unique. Mike Pinder should have been impressed. I had a tough time finding a legit pressing of 'Mental Notes' in the states. My copy is a New Zealand repressing. Later U.S. copies (reissued AFTER the success of 'True Colours') had the cover art changed (Phil Judd now had no hair) and they removed my favorite track from the record, 'Spellbound', rendering it a pointless release. So glad I was persistent in my search over the years and finally happened upon that rare N.Z. pressing.
Excellent taste ! Spellbound is exceptional.😊
I like these choices. I had a night at the opera but felt Queen were moving away from queen 1 (my favourite Queen album). Captain fantastic was incredible. Elton was getting better and better. Didn’t have this split enz but have one slightly later. Like split enz a lot
Thanks Paul!😊
Someone already mention AC/DC-TNT but also High Voltage by them was released that year. Now onto the good part:
Hidden gems 1975: Amanaz-Africa,
John Tropea-A Short Trip To Space,
Mike Oldfield-Ommadawn,
Rory Block-Rory Block,
Sandy Davis- Back On My Feet Again,
Taj Mahal-Music Keeps Me Together
Blackfoot-Youth Power
Between your recommendations and the others in the comments keeping me busy tonight.
Love these reccos!
Nice choices for albums turning 50. I appreciate you choosing many of the less obvious picks.
Random question....is Paul Kelly still relevant in Australia? I wish more people in the US knew about him.
Absolutely!! And a TV series has just launched called How to Make Gravy based on his iconic Xmas song.
@cordesrecords Ahhh, great. That's so awesome.
Mental Notes is a brilliant album and a sign of the greatness of Split Enz who were way ahead of their time. 1975 was such a great year for music especially considering you didn’t include Brian Eno’s Another Green World (probably one of the most influential albums of the decade), Bowie’s Young Americans, Roxy Music’s Siren, 10CC Original Soundtrack, Alice Cooper Welcome To My Nightmare…you can’t include them all I guess.
So many!! I will be doing one or two more during the year :) If you hit the notification bell 🛎️ you may be notified ;)
I convinced Steve Hackett to leave Genesis over dinner in 1977 and urged him to continue in his style.
Also, Warrior On the Edge of Time by Hawkwind blows away many '75 releases.
I need to listen to Hawkwind. And that first statement 😮
WHO By Numbers, one of my Favourites From 75'..
That’s a great pick. I didnt even consider that.
A great queen albums
😊
Greetings from Houston, Texas
I’d recommend a few:
Renaissance’s Scheherazade and Other Stories
Richard and Linda Thompson’s Hokey Pokey
Camel’s The Snow Goose
Grateful Dead’s Blues for Allah
Danny Kirwan’s Second Chapter
Crosby and Nash’s Wind on the Water
Mike Oldfield’s Ommadawn
Love those suggestions! 😊
Speaking of Queen, have you heard Spencer Sutherland's 2024 album called Drama. Very Queen inspired. Great voice.
No. Will seek out
I remember Sherbet having a hit in Ireland not sure if it was 75 maybe earlier or later. If memory serves I believe it was called How's That..
Hozat!
@@cordesrecords I remembered that spelling as soon as I saw it..😄
I'm not sure if you're into Prog Rock, but please check out Free Hand by Gentle Giant, which was released in 1975. Great video and Happy New Year from Ireland.
Just bought an OG of Gentle Giant from Noble Records 😊
@cordesrecords Excellent.
Gasolin’ , a danish band release Gas 5, produced by Roy Tomas Baker 1975.
Don’t know that. Will seek out!😊
1976 Gasolin’ release U.S.A version of the record: ”What a lemon”. Don’t sell out all. Fiasko! On Spotify: ”A Foreign Affair 2”.
From the book: Rock albums of the ´70s. A Critical Guide by Robert Chrisgau.
”Gasolin´: Gasolin´(Epic ´76) This wonderfully improbable record may signal a new movement - here comes the Copenhagen Sound. Would it were true. The LP compiles the best material from three Danish album - which means not only released in Denmark, but sung in the native language of that funky land, with translations provided in part by Epic PR man who deserved a new job. Gasolin´s music miraculously overwhelms the musicianship and symphonic textures of Yurrupean technopomp with the raucous good humor of genuine rock and roll, and their epithet for U.S - ”the red skin band”, they call it - should make any American chauvinist swell with irony. Just when you´re afraid they’re indulging in a little Gues Who sexism, ”It’s all the same to an American dame, ” you figure out that the same to American dane” must be. A-”
(The Grades. An -A: is a very good record. If one of its sides doesn’t provide intense and consistent satisfaction, then both include several cuts that do
A Night At The Opera is Queen’s Sgt Pepper- a worthy choice! 👸
😊
IMHO: my best albums of 1975:
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Nazareth - Hair of the dog (very undarrated album. Has amazing long ballad to just lay and listen: Please, Don't Judas Me)
Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (top-1 song - The Temple of the King)
Scorpions - not the whole album, but the song: In Trance
Rory Gallagher - Against the Grain
Great choices
Such a great, cozy and bright video:)
As usual:)
Would you mind, if I or anyone will add the time-codes with the band+album name in the comments?
Go for it.
Tommy the Movie...Soundtrack.
Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker. "I've Got the Music in Me" Sheffield Lab. Direct to Disc Recording.
Great suggestions!
1975 was the year Lou Reed released his best solo album (imo) Coney Island Baby and his worst (Metal Machine Music).
As for lesser known albums from that year, I recommend Shoes - One in Versailles.
That’s interesting he’d get it so right and so wrong!😊
@ thee was a lot happening in music in 1975
Nasty Gal by Betty Davis
TNT by ACDC
Fools Paradise by Madden and Harris (Australian progressive folk)
Ego is not a Dirty Word by Skyhooks
Girls on the Avenue by Richard Clapton
Sherbet's Greatest Hits ( sadly doesn't have Summer Love on it, with the Dark Side of the Moon ode in the middle eight).
Aaah can’t believe I didn’t include TNT!!
@cordesrecords So many albums, so easy to overlook!
a bunch of good records .for me of course queen .and joni mitchell
but me nr 1 is wish you were here poink floyd
Yeah that’s probably one of the absolute best from the year, maybe ever. 😊
LINDA RONSTADT ❤!!!!!!!!!
🤩
split enz need more love. brillant band.
🎉❤
NEVER HEARD THAT BAND FROM AUSTRALIA SHERVETE I AM FROM CANADA
Check them out.😊
lots of good albums in 1975...none equal to Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert.
It’s truly one of the great live jazz albums. I looked for it , but I think I sold my battered copy and never replaced it. Which now needs to be rectified. For the vocal grunting alone 😂
Uriah Heep Return to Fantasy, Renaissance Sheherazade And Other Short Stories.
😊
X me l'unico album interessante è quello di Joni Mitchell.
