In the '70s, Warner bros issues a huge series, along with other companies, loss leaders. These are inexpensive but have songs from new and established artists. These samplers are something to track down. WFUV (Fordham University) has done these for over 2 decades. The Band - the Last Waltz is a comp album as this is a who's who singing songs. The Concert for Bangladesh same. Bob Dylan- Bobfest celebrating him.

If I only had 10 percent of the 45 rpm discs owned by my brother, sister, and I, in the late 1950s and ‘’60s, I would have a treasure. I cringe at the memories our treatment of them, including sailing them like frisbees. Congratulations, Katie, for your years of caring collecting and your preservation of such beautiful musical pieces. Thank you for sharing. Great collection. A few I want to keep my eyes open for now. I have a lot of compilations - my favorite genre is anything local (or kind of local). Especially indie stuff from small labels. A recent pick up that's not local to me but along the theme you had here is 'Root Damage' - which is a 2LP set of roots influenced bands. Really a good listen, especially if you want an energy boost.

You're spot on regarding John Denver. He's up there. Lucinda and Emmy Lou are testimony to this. Whatever Americana is, he assisted in defining it. Thanks for a lovely video. Its my first viewing.

It was Fred Neil who recommended and introduced Karen to his producer Nik Venet which subsequently led to her first recording-"It's So Hard to Tell Who's Going to Love You the Best" (1969). And it was Fred Neil's wonderful liner notes, the only time he ever did such a thing, that graced the back cover of her second album-"In My Own Time" (1971). Also, I must give a shoutout to my friend, Mark Linn, who is responsible for the "Karen Dalton 1966" album and CD released on his Delmore Recording Society label.

For a twenty year span or so from the late 60's to the early 80's many labels, especially those owned by Warner made loss leader sampler albums. They sometimes have rare tracks, less obvious tracks by major artists and tracks by under appreciated artists, sort of an old school Underground FM aesthetic. Not all but many of Warners' were compiled by Barry "Dr. Demento" Hansen. There was a single artist compilation trend in the early 70's where artist had best ofs, often on double albums that were proto versions of their later box sets with classic hits rubbing shoulders with album tracks and rare songs.

Hello from Germany, this wonderful FOLKWAYS Compilation is also available on VHS and DVD. It is made like a documentary about Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie , narrated by Robbie Robertson, and you have all the Songs in full version.

I must have tons of compilations but the ones I`m thinking of are from the 60`s or 70`s and not K-TEL. I recall as a young lad a comp with Barbara Streisand on it and I still have it (somewhere ). You have given` me some home work. Thanks a lot Katie.

Katie, OMG! I love compilations! I haven't seen that "Vision Shared" in a long time. I have it on CD along with "The World Cafe" and the "Reservation." This brings back memories of me listening to the "The World Cafe" on the radio. I never knew about a John Denver compilation album or the one from Jason. This was so good. If I think of any I definitely will leave some suggestions. Great video! I love your channe.

Totally agree! I discovered Karen when I read an article claiming Dylan had praised her voice. She’s astonishingly good. A beautiful soul who left us way too early ❤. Her version of Reason to Believe is heartbreaking.

Karen Dalton was a genius interpretor of song......she was Bob Dylan's favorite singer......still extraordinary after all this time......In My Own Time is a masterpiece for all time. Thank you for this post.

Thank you, Katie, for this lovely video-tribute to Karen who in the early 80s, became one of my dearest friends. I met her via the guys in "The Band" when I was 21 years old & just starting to work as a side-lead-guitarist with her contemporaries. We were house-mates in two different houses and she was so much more than however her last years and days were presented in print. She had many friends who were there for her. I know it was terribly rough for her at the end but I knew her in such a different way. I was sitting with her, playing guitars and singing when she got the call from the doctor, telling her she was HIV positive. I didn't do drugs & wasn't around her when she was doing any of that. Maybe she did a bit but not around me and she was like a sister to me. She had the best sense of humor! We miss her so very much. She was wise and so incredibly talented. Vocally and guitar-wise. She taught Dylan, Danko, et. al, how to sing. She taught me how to sing. She is beloved by so many and we all miss her. Her spirit lives on. I don't think a day goes by when I don't think of her. 🎶 💞 Thanks again for your wonderful video!! :)

If you love Karen Dalton's music, you should check out a band named Innocence Mission. Very, very similar styles. Innocence Mission has something like 13 albums now and they're all great.

I remember that green capitol label. So "1970".

Karen Dalton is not a Good singer. She is a UNIQUE singer. She is not even close to being "The Greatest Singer". Her voice is weary, creaky, strained, very 'pitchy' - but nobody would call it "Good". And I like her for that. She can't even hit the high note on her signature song - "Something on Your Mind" - but it works because the lyric is "You can't make it without ever even TRYIN"...". One could argue she didn't make it because her voice was not very commercially viable.

Hello Katie. A belated happy birthday. I was streaming Nick Cave's new album last week. I liked it. Very much his gospel album. I have quite a few of his albums, but don't own any on vinyl. Although I've very nearly bought my favourite, The Boatman's Call, a couple of times. I do have a couple of Laurie Anderson records, her first two, Big Science and Mister Heartbreak. Funnily enough my mate James gave me Mister Heartbreak, and he's just done a video about the album. I'll have to give her new one a listen. Ha! My Grandfather also crashed a plane. He was in the RAF, and it would've been an old bi-plane some time in the 1930s. We don't have his propeller though. Cheers - Hedley
