I replaced my Secondary Air Injection Pump with a Pool Floaty pump!! Cost me $10 at Walmart. Plus a 12 vdc to 120 vac inverter for $30. That was back in 2010! It has worked flawlessly ever since, for 13 years!!! No check engine light!!
Can you imagine taking that perfectly running car to a dealer and saying can you fix that rattling noise. Hey folks recommend Scotty to your friends and the relatives that you like I’ve worked on everything that runs and he’s hands down the most practical sensible car guy out there. Thanks Scotty keep it up.
I bought my 09 Matrix (Base 1.8) with 80,000 miles for only $2k Canadian!, Accident free, One owner with all service records! Now that's a smoking deall!
Great context and very informative. I have been watching your videos since finding your channel. My father passed not to long ago and left me his 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe sport . I have been watching trying to learn as much as possible. I recently have been trying to figure out a burning oil smell with no leaks I can find. The fluid levels have been consistent. All information I have came across says spilled oil burning off. A neighbor was kind enough to pop off the plastic cover to the engine and inspect all the areas you would find oil if it leaked but nothing. He said the same thing but it's been a over a month with the smell. I don't drive it much and it only has 84,000 miles. It starts and runs fine. I have a appointment with the dealership since not much luck with local garages not adding an extra. I was just trying to get more information before the appointment so they don't surprise me with anything. Thank you for the great content as always Have a great day
Wind noise. I bought 1/4" adhesive weather stripping; and lined the doors and door sills with it. so much quieter. about $10 for a few rolls. easy to do, seals the car right up.

Mine started leaking a quart every 100 miles. The at205 did initially slow the leak. Ended up getting it fixed at a cost of about 1300 dollars. Oil pump seal 2000 Toyota Camry

Funny you mention the catalytic converter rattling. It was rattling on my 08 CR-V and I just had it replaced this past Saturday. Cost me $450 (obviously the cat was a aftermarket one). I’m just glad there’s no more rattling.
That is a low mileage Matrix. My 2005 Vibe is at 298,000 miles and is dry as a bone underneath. Odometer will quit at 299,999 miles, I have another cluster ready to pop into it. Going for 400,000 miles. The TPMS light being on may not be a tire sensor, on my AWD the TPMS is part of the ABS system, monitors wheel diameter. If a tire is low the ABS system alerts the TPMS system. Temp changes drive the system crazy.
Your poor Toyota Celica still has Texas plates, what happened to getting Tennesee plates? I too dislike CODES for Oxygen Sensor and Misfiring all leading up to that Check Engine Light. A bad catalytic converter equals loss of HP, much noise, and an expensive repair. I like the idea of using a dye to find the oil leak. Thanks, Scotty for another entertaining video.
Peppy? NOT BECAUSE of the stick shift. The XRS had the infamous 2ZZ-FE Yahama-modified race engine! And the ABS is "indirect," does not use TPMS sensors
This being a 2ZZ-FE also explains the aluminum intake plenum versus the plastic one on his wife's 1ZZ-FE. Has nothing to due with the year of manufacture. Sorry to correct you Scotty….
It's "zippier" because it's a 2zz with a lot more power than the 1zz. That's also why the intake is metal, not the year. I'm surprised that Scotty doesn't know this already.
I can tell you the difference between airbags and just a seat belt, since I had front end collisions both ways. With airbag, felt fine afterwards, with only the seat belt felt like some one threw a baseball at my chest, sore for a week or more
One of my bosses from about 10 years ago had an early 2000s blazer that she was stopped in traffic idling and got rear ended…the airbags didn’t go off with the rear end impact but she’s a shorter woman…about 5’ tall….it was when her blazer rolled forward and slightly bumped the car in front of her that made the airbags go off…she was fine before they went off…afterwards she had a broken nose, both eyes bruised and swollen shut and whiplash….from the airbags…if they hadn’t gone off, it would have been minor damage easily fixed but since she lived in a liberal state at the time and had to have the airbags replaced etc…it cost her a damned fortune just to have those stupid airbags replaced ….so yeah…airbags are a damned joke ….they go off when they shouldn’t and don’t when they should from my experience…every accident I’ve been in they’ve never gone off which is fine by me…I’d rather have them removed altogether because I’m a 5’ tall petite female that probably wouldn’t have much luck with them not causing more damage then the accident itself caused like my boss did …
@@w8what575 Newer vehicles have weight sensors in the seats to reduce the airbag force for lighter individuals. It is likely your bosses car didn't have that feature. Airbags should not go off from a rear impact. Likely the whiplash was from the rear impact, but it could made worse from the airbag. Airbags sensors are calibrated to not deploy below certain G force, comparable to about a 20 to 25 mph collision with a fixed object. I've seen lots of collisions where the front of the car was destroyed and the airbag likely saved the persons life.
This is a 2zz engine. They are notorious for developing timing cover gasket leaks when high in mileage, also the 6 speed c60 transmission is not very long lasting if you like giving it constant abuse. First signs of the trans being worn is gear notch or grind when going into third, and occasional second gear lock out. There are other few achilles heels on this powertrain but other than that the XRS matrix and corolla even the celica gts are rare now and very well underestimated since they never got the spot light like Honda B and K series did.
It has a metal intake manifold because it's the 2zz engine rather than the 1zz in Scotty's matrix. The 2zz revs a lot higher than the 1zz and can produce up to 190hp naturally aspirated.
scotty really hated the 2zz in the last gen celica but for some reson he loves it in the matrix/corolla xrs models. Still the same engine lol, but I guess it gets more abused in the celica and breaks more often. Also the same engine that lotus used in the Elise and in the Exige with a supercharger
@@DeepRacer-zr4ypWe used to have a Corolla Runx Z. It is a Japanese import. In New Zealand, It's very common to get a Japanese import. We bought it without knowing it had the 2zz. It was a great car while we had it and regret selling it.
@DeepRacer-zr4yp Scotty says in previous videos that the 2zz has issues due to the high revs. People buy a Celia because of it's sporty look and they will generally drive them harder. People with Corollas are more conservative drivers so the engine is kept at lower RPMs so they are pretty reliable for the average driver.
My 2002 Lexus RX 300 is leaking somewhere near there but only if I drive 70mph or above for any distance. Long trips are a pain. Between Tx and CA I’ll use around 6 quarts. Lucas doesn’t stop it. I will have to try the AT.
Hello Scotty , my VW Passat is misfiring on all cylinders. I’ve changed the coils & plugs still was running rough so I sprayed fuel injector cleaner into the intake & same thing is happening. What do you suggest that I try next. Thanks in advance for all that you do & a special thank you if you’re able to help me. Anyone for that matter !
Scotty the reason its zippier is that the xrs has the 2zz-ge engine, higher reving, and substantially more power than the 1zz-fe in your matrix, i had the 2004 matrix with the same engine as yours, the difference between the engines is the 2zz-ge is a performance oriented engine, the 1zz-fe is a lean burn, fuel economy engine, look into the engines before your say the transmission is the reason, i guarantee if that 2zz-ge was running fully right that youd notice a bigger difference, ie running a fuel injector cleaner and clean the MAF and they wake right up
Added at205 reseal to the rear differential of my 2001 ford mustang 185,000 miles. The leak went from a teaspoon a week down to 3 or 4 drops. Still working after 6 months
That is a Matrix XRS, it feels "Faster" than your wifes because it has a higher horsepower engine. XRS are very rare and sought after due to the engine. Same engine used in Lotus Elise
I had a 140k miles Ford Excursion with a dripping rear main seal. Carport dripping area nuisance. Used some of this AT205 sealant and totally fixed the issue. No more drips. Sold it at 155K. I wonder if it would rejuvenate my '48 Packard fuel pump diagram?? Can't find any cheap rebuild kits.
The matrix manual transmissions are high demand. I had a customer with a 09 Pontiac vibe (a matrix) who destroyed the transmission. It was cheaper to buy a used Corolla with a blown engine and transfer the transmission over. 400$ vs 1000$ 4 years ago 🤷🏻
2500 for my 04 vibe and 4k miles on it so far haven't changed nothing besides the oil. Does need new rotors but it's not bad at all so leaving as is until the brakes completely wear out.
I wish I could talk so positively about my 2006 Matrix base model. It's reliable I guess but really the only good part is, it's a 5 speed manual trans.
Secondary air injection pump pumps air into the cat for the first min upon starting to hurry up the heating of the cat to get it to do its emissions thing faster. When the pump goes it usually is because it sucks up water and pumps water into the cat.....i.e. the rattle in the cat. They rot out the comb inside it and the inexpensive expensive pump turns into a very expensive exhaust job. You dont really want to ignore that. The pump is whats killing the converter
05 Matrix Base & XL has 5sp trans or 4sp automatic 140hp or 132hp AWD. 05 Matrix XLS is 180hp and the manual is a 6sp. 😅 Come on Scotty 🎉 obviously that car was beat to crap and that killed the trans. 😮
Him flogging it is a one time occurrence while he works on it and reviews it. That's a huge difference and not even remotely comparable to a owner who flogs it day in and day out on a long term basis.
Scotty love your videos I know people who work in a Toyota Dealership they told me the converter that's part of the exhaust manifold they have a problem with them when they break apart they get sucked up into the valves and do a lot of damage I figure I share that tip have a blessed day keep up the hard work! 😂
Hey scotty, i love your videos, watch them everyday, but i wish you would hold the camera still when you go to the drag strip so i could see the dam speedometer...
Every Matrix I've owned has had a weak manual transmission. I've had a 2001, 2003, and 2005. After 250 thousand Km they will start to slip when pushed hard. They always go and never left me stranded but you know eventually you won't be able to climb a hill.
If the oil is dripping out this will not fix the leak, oil seal like the front and rear main seals go bad due to high crankcase pressure causesd by PCV system or internal engine issues like high blowby due to piston rings, on that Toyota engine the timing chain tensioner leaks all the times.
Both manual transmissions? Toyota had and has kept buried a pretty heavily complained bearing issue with the manual 5 speed transmissions in the matrix (and I believe its the same tranny in the corollas and Vibe those years). The 03, 04, and 05 were the worst and they slowly improved things over the four or five years. It seems less common by 07
Scotty, have you told people about the change to the Ford 2.7 turbo that now has a rubber oil pump belt soaked in oil that rots in 60 to 80 thousand miles ? It had a chain driven belt until about 2917. I have a 2020 and I love the truck but am very afraid of my motor blowing when the belt breaks.
We need a paradigm shift. We need to make the car companies pay us to use their product. I also advocate for bikes. I've never had a loose catalytic converter or any engine codes but I will say I can't find the gas cap and the windshield wipers don't work.
My neighbor had a Crown Vic with a clogged cat. He eventually just jacked the thing up and took it off. The car had close to 200,000 miles and he wasn't planning on selling it so he didn't care. I know some will say "well that's illegal" but he didn't get into any trouble for it.
I had to get the transmission and clutch replaced in my Focus about 3 years ago, but the previous owner didn't take care of it and the shop found a used transmission with low miles and replaced the entire clutch assembly and it's running like new again
OK, I see why you would get sued. Ummm. Doing that to a BMW will ruin the engine. The sealent will clog the VANOS VVT system that relys on oil pressure to adjust the timing. Trust me, I know. I already delt with rebuilding a BMW engine that the previous owner did that. I had to completely replace all the VVT parts in the engine rebuild. On some other brands that don't use oil in their VVT systems, that is O.K.
Years ago my cat convert went out on my car, so I cut it out , turned it sideways, beat it with a hammer to get all of the crap out of it and put the housing back into the exhaust system and drove it without the cat for 13 years with the check engine light on. My car got better fuel mileage without it and it didn’t hurt the engine. When I sold the car, I told the new owner that it had no cat and dropped the price by $300 for the price of a universal cat. I had a 79 Ford F150 and as soon as the warranty expired I ripped out all the smog crap, took a broomstick handle to the gas tank filler tube, to make it bigger so that I could run leaded regular gasoline in the truck. Before I took all of the smog cap off, I was getting 13mpg and after taking all of it off, I got 17mpg. The F150 had a 302 (5.0L) V8 and a 3spd automatic transmission. It was a great pickup. It belonged to my grandpa and I needed a 4WD, so I sold it in 82 and bought a new F150 4WD with the 4.9L (inline 6cyl) and the 3spd automatic transmission. I got 21mpg on that F150.
I have the xtool8 version so far I really like it is expensive but the things you can do with I have fixed one person car with it his cars RPM was to high it took a few minutes but had to reset the RPM factory reset and it worked and it can program new keys
Saved my steering rack Subaru wrx. Thanks stoped my leak on trunk tranny to now I got a seized drum tows bringing home could not back off bleeder -30 here ouch bro 😎
Very hard to find a AWD in a manual unless it’s a subbE .(I’d pull the shield off) I like the body style of those. The rear windows lift up without the hatch opening pretty nice. My 10 didn’t they went in a different outside style (more bubbled look)
Let me tell you my experience with that garbage. I had a tiny leak on my rear diff gasket..I listened to Scotty and tried that crap.. 1 day later the gasket was leaking more and the seal was leaking too, like a waterfall. Threw oil everywhere and I mean everywhere...that stuff is total garbage
Hi Scotty. I watch a lot of your videos and enjoy them a lot. You said something on this video that caught my attention and so I've got to ask you. How do you clean out the drain ports on those sunroofs? Please. Mine is clogged up. And I'm disabled so it's going to be hard for me to get up there but I'm willing to try if you are willing to tell me how to do it please.
Question Scotty or anyone on channel I have a 03 Toyota Matrix XR. I just replaced upstream O2 sensor, PCV valve and cleaned Mass Airflow Sensor and throttle body. It runs and idles pretty darn well but I have noticed a decrease in my mpg. Any thoughts? It has 133k on it. Thanks if someone would reply.

2ZZ-GE
Any Toyota motor with "-G" in the motor code means Yamaha tuned the valve train.
@@w8what575how many accidents have you been in? Maybe you should stop driving or find a lucky charm if they weren’t your fault
Yamaha engine scotty.XRS Matrix are fun.1st owner burnt the cluch out. That car is worth $3000 all day long. Thanks for the great vids scotty.
I brought a 2010 Toyota Matrix new and I totaled it in 2014 😢 I loved that car
Still decent for a 1.8.
scotty really hated the 2zz in the last gen celica but for some reson he loves it in the matrix/corolla xrs models.
Scotty's Matrix has the Corolla engine and that Matrix is the XRS so it has the same failure prone Yamaha engine as the Celica GT.
My 2002 Lexus RX 300 is leaking somewhere near there but only if I drive 70mph or above for any distance. Long trips are a pain. Between Tx and CA I’ll use around 6 quarts. Lucas doesn’t stop it. I will have to try the AT.
Got a scion Xb last yr. For $500. Had bad car alarm. Removed alarm. It started. Sold it for $2500
Hello Scotty , my VW Passat is misfiring on all cylinders.
Matrix manual with bad trans, my 2002 Focus MANUAL trans works prefect, with 208k MILES.
That is a Matrix XRS, it feels "Faster" than your wifes because it has a higher horsepower engine. XRS are very rare and sought after due to the engine. Same engine used in Lotus Elise
So that's a 2.4L not a 1.8L correct?
1zz vs 2zz engine. Also that's why metal vs plastic i take. Thats a dead give away. Big difference in engine design
I expexted scotty to know the difference
Same but even worse the current owner didn't advise scotty so the owner has no idea!@@zridert1
1.8L VVTL-I similar to honda's VTEC but better :)@@rockinrob2004 190bhp naturally aspirated
Had a 2004 and put a lot of miles on it. Only knock on it was it wasn’t great in the snow.
Wireless/solar power TPMS comes with base and four tire caps. 35 bucks.. DIY insulation.
This has a lot more pep bc it’s a different engine.. this is a 2zz has the Yamaha cylinder head.. makes more power
He didn't even put it in Lift.
As long as Scottys burning rubber he's happy ! 😂😂😂
"Drop a gear disappear"👍.
Just wnna say scotty i love your videos and the fact your always posting your my favorite mechanic keep at it!
05 Matrix Base & XL has 5sp trans or 4sp automatic 140hp or 132hp AWD.
05 Matrix XLS is 180hp and the manual is a 6sp.
😅
Come on Scotty 🎉 obviously that car was beat to crap and that killed the trans. 😮
Shouldn't you change the oil after you pour that dye in does it hurt the oil or leave it to see if the leak stops
Great tips. You can't beat good experience and someone that share valuable information!
Scotty: "Who knows, the owner before him might have just beaten the heck out of it" "The way I'm beating the heck out of it right now".
His videos wouldn’t be worth watching if it wasn’t for the irony
True. Funny, we never see him take any of his personal cars out for a drive down 'the race track', and rag the hell out of 'em.@@defundthepolice2007
Him flogging it is a one time occurrence while he works on it and reviews it. That's a huge difference and not even remotely comparable to a owner who flogs it day in and day out on a long term basis.
@@stuglenn1112 you can daily flog that High-Optioned Matrix for another 60K miles.
Its got a Hall of Fame Toyota (with Yamaha) motor in it.

That's 2 different engines
Don't get it confused
Dude thinks it’s faster because it has a manual, lmao. Nah, it’s because it’s engine has 40% more power than his Matrix’s
In Australia 1000s and 100s of Tesla's sitting ...not being sold ..still at the port.
IC engines 🎉😊
I sold my 2005 Matrix to a friend. Has over 300k miles and going strong.
I hope when I’m old I’m just like Scotty still driving my 20 Camry in 2065 👍
That leak seal stuff works great!
Takata air bags, shoulder harnesses won’t protect from getting your jugular severed.
The XLS is the sport version of the four cylinder
Reseal is good to know, Thanks Scotty
Scotty and I have been friends since 1978.
Both my brother in law's 07 and my 05 matrix had the transmission go out at around 200k, was super expensive to replace so they both got sold.
Just replaced the clutch in my 283,000 miles driven 05 Vue 4cyl.
Good stuff AT 205 ,Thanks Scotty.
At auto zone they say you must watch Scotty Kilmer to be looking for that product
Scotty, the amount of editing you do on your videos, must be a pain in the KEESTER!!!
I had to get the transmission and clutch replaced in my Focus about 3 years ago, but the previous owner didn't take care of it and the shop found a used transmission with low miles and replaced the entire clutch assembly and it's running like new again
My 2006 Baja Subaru had a rattle, it was the heat shield around the cat It was just removed, the rattle was no more.
Just picked up the XTOOL D8W two weeks ago. Love it so far. Would you please do a review?
I have the xtool8 version so far I really like it is expensive but the things you can do with I have fixed one person car with it his cars RPM was to high it took a few minutes but had to reset the RPM factory reset and it worked and it can program new keys
Saved my steering rack Subaru wrx. Thanks stoped my leak on trunk tranny to now I got a seized drum tows bringing home could not back off bleeder -30 here ouch bro 😎
Very hard to find a AWD in a manual unless it’s a subbE .(I’d pull the shield off)
I like the body style of those. The rear windows lift up without the hatch opening pretty nice.
My 10 didn’t they went in a different outside style (more bubbled look)
1:41 the seagull absolutely killed me there ahahahah
tie into manifold vacuum then WOT test gauge should go zero, if not clog converter
Air bags or not, wearing a seat belt will save your life.
I'm speaking from experience 😌
Type it in TH-cam or Google , mine could use one to actually 😅
So funny thinking of Scotty editing that Seagull in 🤣
Question Scotty or anyone on channel I have a 03 Toyota Matrix XR. I just replaced upstream O2 sensor, PCV valve and cleaned Mass Airflow Sensor and throttle body. It runs and idles pretty darn well but I have noticed a decrease in my mpg. Any thoughts? It has 133k on it. Thanks if someone would reply.
