The talent disparity between the two teams is amazing. Thankfully for the Cubbies they were able to flip Ivan DeJesus for Future HOFer Ryan Sandberg who would lead them to the NLCS in ‘84.
I remembered it was against these same Cubs that the Pirates defeated to win the NL East Division that year, but that game was played at Three Rivers Stadium when the Pirates wrapped it all up. 1979 was the year “The Buc-Os” appeared in, and won The World Series.
I am interested in finding a clip (or the whole game) of a Cub/Padre matchup where Dave Kingman and Mick Kelleher got into a fight at second base because, if I remember correctly, Kingman slid in too hard and leveled Kelleher, and a fight ensued. I have always been a Kingman fan and had the story about this game on my wall, with the picture of course.
Did you know that in Jack's first year as WGN broadcaster in Chicago the Cubs finished in last place? And the Cubs finished in last place in Jack's final year as WGN broadcaster in Chicago? These were in 1948 and 1981 in a strike shortened season. Talk about crappy baseball.
Did you know the Cubs finished last when WGN aired their games for the 1st time in 1948? And the Cubs finished last in Jack's final year as the announcer for WGN in 1981? Crappy baseball indeed. But 1981 did prove to be the last year under ownership by the Wrigleys. The Tribune Company took over the next year and brought in Dallas Green to operate the Cubs.
The Cubs played 4 more home games after this one, against the Mets (including a make-up doubleheader), but those were mid-week day games with attendance under 6,000, so like many teams, they scheduled Fan Appreciation Day for the final Sunday home game.
Wow, not a thousand stats all over the screen, catcher Barry Foote wiped off home plate with his hand and didn’t come out of the game. Rueshal 29 decisions coming into the game, he must have pitched at least 30 times, not anymore
I grew up seeing these classic commercials whenever the Cubs were on the air especially Union 76, True Value and McDonald's when Ronald McDonald was all the rage
It was so good to see Jack Brickhouse again. Hey Hey!
I grew up on the north side listening to and watching Jack Brickhouse. Hey hey!
Love these old baseball games. Thanks for sharing.
Anything for you Rich, you are one of “Fuzzy’s All-Stars”! 😎
As a Cubs fan I like the Pirates' road uniforms and classic caps here. Very nice!
Absolutely, I had to buy a Pirates “old school” cap when my Dad lived in Pittsburgh.
this was a true treat. Chicago was mighty different back then. it was quite nice..
John Wayne Gacy?
I've waiting to see that highlight video for Almost 40 years. yes!!!!
ME TOO! I just want to know who was involved in that fight in the middle screen! LOL!
JIm Bibby used to sweat like a waterfall when he pitched. Won the NL Cy Young in 1980. Former Cub Steve Stone won that year in the AL for Baltimore.
He was the pitching coach for the Lynchburg Hillcats, when the Pirates had their Class A farm team near me in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Bibby did not win the '80 NL Cy Young. Steve Carlton won it with a 24-9 record and 2.34 era.
The Killer Bees Pirates. Soon to be champions that year.
fantastic footage!

Actually, Ryne Sandberg was just a throw-in to the trade (but what a throw-in!). The main man in the trade was Larry Bowa.
11:00 “That almost nicked him.”
LOL. That almost took his head off.
LOL - That was CLASSIC
Jack was starting to lose it .
Then he says “it grazed him” 😆
FANTASTIC!!!! May we have more, SiR?
Manhattan Skyline by David Shire from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack at the 15:02 mark.
I love how Foli gets drilled, almost gets hit in the face…Jack says “that almost nicked him” 😆
John from Chips In the spirit of 76 commercial...
Actor Larry Wilcox. He was in them since 1976.
"76" as a gas station isn't around anymore, is it correct?
I remembered it was against these same Cubs that the Pirates defeated to win the NL East Division that year, but that game was played at Three Rivers Stadium when the Pirates wrapped it all up.

i was 11 at the start of that season. Gotta love the leap Ivan DeJesus makes at the opening promo.
Ahhh, fan appreciation day...last home game of the season.... Memorable days.
Footage of the stock market exchange @00:40 was an interesting addition -??- I love it when things don't make sense!
That was actually a True Value commercial w/Pat Summerall. Fine WGN-TV editing back in the day lol

I seen Kong play out in Oakland in '84...Me & my brother got his autograph after the game..(rare what is said....
@@schmitty139 sadly I did not get that chance. I see that nobody can steer me in the right direction to find a clip of that fight either, oh well.
I remember that brawl either Brickhouse or Bouderau was saying 6 foot 4 vs 5 foot 6 😀
I always liked Jack Brickhouse. He was a homer but not annoyingly so. Just imagine all the crappy baseball he had to watch in his career.

I remember hearing all the hype about Scott, Thompson, was going to make people forget Billy Williams.....not so much
Notice how Jack Brickhouse was also giving NFL scores in middle of the game.
I remember when Jack Brickhouse and Irv Kupcient would call the Chicago Bears football games.
Bill Madlock another former cub to win a World Series he did it with the pirates
"Rocky" theme by Bill Conti.
Jim Bibby (SP) is former NBA superstar Mike Bibby's uncle.
Pirates top of the lineup, Moreno and Foli, way choked up. Little attempt at power. Never see that today
baseball these days sucks

That pirates offense was dangerous top to bottom. They hit our pitching, but we hit the ball just like they did especially with Kong.
Went to a cub- bucko game the next yr('80) in April and bucko's got 11 straight hits of Dennis Lamp in the 1st inning- they could HIT
The pirates came back from a 3 game to 1 deficit to win World Series
Why only the first 23 minutes? :(
Umpires
HP Paul Pryor
1B Dave Pallone
2B Ed Vargo (CC)
3B Jim Quick
The umpire named Jim was undoubtedly too fast to be Quick
Pirates went on to win the W/S ..(We are family...seen, pops Stargell put one or two out on Sheffieild
I think the voice over is Bob Bozo Bell, not Len Johnson
The red Sox fans hated bill Buckner

Look like something the 1970's bad news bears little league team would wear
Cigarette commercials always bring me back.
I grew up seeing these classic commercials whenever the Cubs were on the air especially Union 76, True Value and McDonald's when Ronald McDonald was all the rage
Sigh. Couldn't the Cubbies had beaten the Pirates? Then the Orioles would have avoided them the World Series and....
WAY more foul territory than they have today, and the games played on dirt.
