I think the thought process is that loading up the bullpen will take stress off of the starters. A lot of these guys struggle facing the lineup a third time through, and they can tap into the bullpen before reaching that point. Also you have to believe that they will hit on at least one of these young starters that were highly touted throughout their minor league careers.
The Pirates, even if you hate it, do NOT use starters past five or six innings. You have to be a top guy. Keller is the only one they allowed to finish games, and only if his pitch count was ridiculously low. Bednar is great, but has a track record of being overused and running out of gas in August. They needed another killer arm in the BP to take stress of Bednar and give them consistent innings after the 5th. Not only a reliever, but a CLOSER. Holderman fell apart when asked to close last year. Chapman is actually a guy they desperately needed for the game they play. Chapman is one of the best closers ever, so he can give Bednar a rest and keep him fresh. Yeah, after the top 3 starters, their starting pitching looks shaky, but that is a lot of teams now. Last year, teams were using openers in the playoffs! I think the Pirates feel "if" their shaky guys can maybe go 5 innings and give up 3 runs, their offense will make it up and they dont have to pay a ton. Now if they get shelled that plan will then look bad and they will again be mediocre at around .500, unless Skenes is lights out and they go on a big second half of the season run.
In my humble opinion, if Cruz is healthy this year, bullpen stays good, and the starting pitchers can do a decent job we can make the playoffs. The prospects are actually good. If Paul comes up this year which I somewhat doubt, and has a good showing we can make a push. But we are still young so really I am not going to ask for much. I just want progress and see the young men compete. My dad used to tell me so much stories about Clemente when we were in 🇵🇷. A team with so much history, I believe we can get there but it will take serious focus
Oviedo being out for the season hurts really bad but I think Perez will be good and one or two of our young guys has to have a good season I feel like and we got a stacked bullpen so I’m optimistic going into this season, also I love that this channel covers the pirates because like no other channels do
Lot of holes in this video. For starters, Ortiz isn't close to a guarantee to make the rotation and is almost a lock to be in the minors to start the season. Perez and Gonzales aren't great options but they are very clearly better than what they have in house currently. You say they should've offered Yariel yet fail to mention that they did and he just didn't want to come here. They offered multi year deals of $15M+ to Imanaga and Manaea too but they didn't want to come here. The idea wasn't to ignore the rotation, they just couldn't convince people to come here. You also forgot to mention Mlodzinski in the bullpen who was fantastic as a rookie last year and Borucki who had a nice breakout for them after signing early in the season.
Yeah, the Pirates have a bad reputation. Signing Keller will help that a little, but a lot of guys do not want to come to Pittsburgh. They have to win first. Chicken and the egg.
I pretty much watch every pirate game, one of their biggest fans I’m actually a little bit excited about Martin Perez and Marco Gonzalez because one thing Oscar Marie they’re pitching coach Has had success with is being able do fix soft, tossing lefties
Could you imagine how Pittsburgh would react at a World Series… just imagine Game7 Pirates up by 2 and Renegade starts playing. The fucking Clemente bridge might collapse
I think that the issue isn’t the Pirates front office, it’s the players. People forget that the player has to accept the deal as well. Just because they didn’t sign someone didn’t mean that they just choose not sign someone. Other than that great video
I absolutely agree with you. I live by Pittsburgh, and all my friends are Pirates fans lol. I was just telling them a few days ago, its a big part the players not wanting to go. Glad you enjoyed brother!
They need a new owner, look at the latest on him. Even Big Ben of the Steelers called him out. Stories of the owner saying he is fine with how things are. You have to want the pennant! Stop playing safe and spend some money Bob Nutting!!
I think Rodriguez did not want to sign with the pirates, it was reported they made an offer similar to what other teams made, Giants in the same boat finding it hard to get players to sign
Yeah i’ll give the Pirates the benefit of the doubt there. It’s tough to attract free agents in small markets like Pittsburgh, and thats the unfortunate reality.
The ownership doesn't give a rats fat fanny about winning, they want to appear that they are doing something to improve without actually doing anything at all. Their pitching is a steamy mess, offense is below average, defense is so-so but the pen is good......that adds up to another stinker at PNC Park....thank God for the Fireworks Nights!
Pirates, Royals, and Tigers are my sleeper teams next year.
Lol Royals gonna suck. Tigers and Pirates good choices though.
@@HighestIQRoyals have signed some good players this off season
Pirates still have good rotation still
@@jjflo5147their rotation is easily one of the worst
True

All they need now is a Manager
And a new owner
Chapman is the beast 💪

As a pirates fan, I hope the starting pitching works out. The offense and bullpen are great
One of the best bullpens if only that was the case at the binging of the season
In 3 outs pitched I just watched Luis Ortiz hit 2 batters walk a run in and committ a fielding error. Not worth 1 penny they are paying him.
Start each game with an opener?

We’ve seen this before. Wonder if they’ve learn
Best way to hide a shit rotation is a bludgeoning of runs. Pirates haven’t been a good offensive team since Nam
Pirates great bullpen with no starters. Brilliant! (PS im a pirates fan)
Another small market team to compare to this is the diamondbacks. Theyve adressed all the holes they had on the roster in 3 months
Yep. Dbacks offseason has been unbelievable, really like what they’ve done
