- As the government reveals its plans to launch a 'grow your own' revolution, allotment tenant and Gardeners' World presenter Alys Fowler explains how to use the best of the winter weather to compost common weeds and plant next year's garlic crop

I absolutely love Alys Fowler's series on gardening. Very inspiring and useful to me, as a gardening professional who uses quality video material to teach others.
After a long wait we have finally got out allotment in Bracknell. This winter episode is really helpful and encouraging. Thanks a lot....

Absolutely grand! So unlike North American shows, so clean, tidy, fake. This lady gets her hands dirty! And makes gardening look accessible without magical tools or chemicals. Bravo!

Second, to all haters or Roundup lovers... If you have nothing more polite or at least, less stupid to say, please, say nothing! You kill your own land and your health... and the worst part in the story is that you are proud to promote your destructive techniques!
So if you don't like 'wildflowers' of organic gardening.... Just don't put your nose in it....

And BTW, if I was Bewitched, I would twinkle twinkle my nose and get Alys Fowler to help for a day in my tiny yard and help me decide the best way to design it. I am horrible at design and I think of advice you give in your book, but I just can't make it right here. I keep plugging away at it, but I can't find gardeners of my type gardening here in my town. Alas, I don't have magic. LOL.

Brilliant idea with the weeds! So happy to see someone making excellent use of that biomass. Don't throw it away, people! Make compost. Good helpful weed identification. Perennial weeds are so much worse than annual weeds.
That's a brilliant kettle. I can highly recommend nettles brewed down into a smelly soup, despite the stink it does make very good feed, as does seaweed but rinse it first.

They do vary. I had one in Potters Bar which was £8 per year plus £2 key (2006) which was full size but gave that up after some flytippers decided to dump chemicals in the road next to it. A council one I have which is small, is slightly more than a semi private site at £6.50 per pole but they are graded A or B. My council one is B probably because it is next to the local secure unit but the fencing is very good... it has to be. I do not stay after dark though.

I put my weeds in a dustbin and cover with water. In the summer is turns to slime in about 3 weeks, I put it on my compost heap.

sure in dublin at can cost you euro 285 for a 20 x6 mtr plot for the year thats private, the council arnt far from that either

Robbie RDBL Guy it's called a ghillie kettle. Lots of manufactures online uk based ones the best. I've two but an ionised or coated one is better than straight aluminium will last longer.
What about the no dig method? Dose it work?
Yep. Cardboard. Four inches of compost. I put unrotted horse straw/manure on in autumn and by spring it’s perfect for planting. Never stand on it or dig it. Just a little light hoeing! More compost in autumn.

The worms feed on microorganisms which decompose that cardboard. Personally I bring out vermicompost with worms inside.
thats the trouble, the council, think they should charge the same as private..its all wrong..
I took on a council allotment 3 months ago in S. Wales, it costs me £10 per year ...!- absolute bargain. I had a private allotment for a short while previously which was costing a fortune.
Trench digging does a good and easier job just shovel dirt on to the next part how a plow works but deeper

Allotments are an alien concept here in Canada. To me at any rate. Is each allotment given a shed or do you have to build your own?
You just get the plot in whatever state it’s in with whatever’s on it usually. I got a rotting but usable shed but also 3 years worth of weed growth and piles of chicken wire and broken glass.
Try No-Dig Alice, makes life much easier.

I used to use it I'm sorry to say but not now. A decent hoe, regular use of it and weed membrane if you are that fussy are good alternatives. Also it is a waste of money at forty quid a pop for the concentrate.

Must be awful to live where you have an allotment, and not a back yard. Not worth it.
not understanding your comment - I have an allotment to grow huge amounts of vegetables. I also have a large garden for flowers. Allotments are wonderful. They are part of a community. You are missing the pleasure of having your own allotment.
My apologies. My post was short and left a lot to interpretation.
I dread living in the city where you are crammed in with your neighbors and have tiny little yards, if you have yards at all, and can hear your neighbors start up their cars in the morning, or play loud music, or become nosy about your business.
And to have to travel to a spot of land that apparently you rent? or are allowed to use for a certain amount of time? I'd imagine it's the latter since it's an "allotment" and who knows what state the previous grower left it in, let alone all the rules that come with such a thing.
I don't want to have to drive a car or ride a bike to get my food, I have it all within 400 feet of my kitchen door. And the soil you build is yours to have year after year while the trees produce more and more fruit.
I have lived in the city, apartments and housing tracts.. Then I moved to the country on 40 acres and found comfort in the silence filled with nature for 20 years.. Then I found a place somewhere in the middle, with an acre of flat land weedy and overgrown, but with rich loamy clay just begging for piles of compost and heavy mulching and old growth nut trees lining the edges. This is what I dream it could be for everyone. If you can grow huge amounts of veggies on a small allotment just imagine what you can do with some space.
Imagine what it could be like in 5 years.. 10 years when your trees are producing 8 5 gallon buckets of fruit each tree! And you realize you probably shouldn't have planted 150 different kinds of trees but your neighbors love you for it, and all the people that expect to see you each week at the farmers market.
But I digress.
What I meant is it just doesn't seem right to live crammed in a city, a food wasteland, with tiny square homes with no yards, and then have to drive away from it just to have a tiny square garden.. It just seems... backward somehow.

where land is still quite cheap. Living in the UK we are indeed crammed
together but I thank heavens for my lovely long and largeish garden -
it gives me such pleasure.
If you are very rich in the UK you can have what you have - space and quiet. Most cannot. I have a friend in Texas in the USA who has acres of land - and a house of course - and what she paid for it or what it is worth - is half of what I have in the UK. In a tiny island space is golden.
The new houses being built have postage stamp size gardens. Yes, I do have issues with neighbours - but I like knowing that people are around with me. And yes, I do drive to my allotment but I find it such a pleasure. Once I get there I am just there to enjoy, digging my plot and seeing my allotmenteer friends as they do as I do. I would hate to be alone in the wilderness. But that is me. Yes, I rent my allotment and it is mine as long as I keep it up as long as I can. When I am too old to dig and maintain my plot it will go back to others who can enjoy as I enjoy it. The rules are quite simple - keep it tidy!
I provide enough food for my family and with a glut - many familes.
There is pickling and freezing raspberries etc. It is enough. The five
apple trees in the allotment and in the garden provide ample fruit for
pies and juicing for a year. It is all enough and I thank heavens I
have my own allotment. Not all can afford to live in acres and acres of
land. Especially in small countries like mine. I thank god to live in
a safe and stable country. I thank god I have a place to call home.
I am not in a city - but am close to a beautiful and historic city called Canterbury in Kent. It is small. Look it up on Google. I am close to the sea for swimming in the summer. I can go to the 11th century cathedral in Canterbury to contemplate and enjoy. I think I am very lucky where I live. I think I have everything I need where I am. Though I would love to see your place! Where are you in the USA?
We have both so does Alys. I grow flowers and shrubs at home fruit and veg on the allotment it's far far from awful there's a whole community of fellow gardeners there. It's great really like a whole separate world to escape to. I agree that it would be horrible to have a tiny or no garden though.
