    Ahhhh tony I only have one son and he’s here with his girlfriend for the weekend he doing his PhD in Brighton. Every time they visit it’s great but when they leave the house is so quiet takes a couple of days every time to get back to normal. The dogs miss them also. Peace 🧚🏻‍♀️

    I got my hands on some pelleted carrot seeds which makes spacing them a breeze. Water them in well and keep them covered with some cardboard or wooden planks, anything to keep the soil from drying out. Check on them, give them some water if they need it. Take off the cardboard when you see germination. Bingo Bango, you got carrots.

    Your plot looks great Tony. Must look into Christmas potatoes, never heard of them. Feel for you as your son goes off. He will be fine. Our girls pop in every Friday which is lovely but its the silence that descends when they have gone. Its always sad!🌿🌿🌿🌿

      I lost my eldest daughter 10 years ago this month and I just have my youngest daughter now, who lives a long way away in London. She pops down occasionally, and after her visit last Wednesday, I felt really low the next day and couldn't work out why. Then I realised it was because her leaving to go back home had left me with such an empty and lonely feeling. Felt quite bereft until I ventured back in the garden- it certainly has a healing vibe. Bless you

    When my Dad planted carrot seeds he would cover the ground with a plank of wood for about 10 to 14 days, he had more success doing them that way than leaving them to do their own thing.

    Another good video Tony, You are having better luck with the Caulis and Parsnips than i am. Its amazing how quickly weeds can take over a plot, once you manage to get on top of them, its pretty straight forward keeping the weeds down to a minimum. I enjoy having what i call " my time " down the plot, chill, relax and potter, if it rains, potter in the shed or greenhouse or polytunnel, never gets boring though. Keep the videos coming.

    The way I heard it was, three days under wet cardboard. They like they dark, and they don't like nitrogen. I put a strip of sand for them to start on. They want water at the start. Some people do 2 x a day. Rock on Big Fella.

    You could plant potatoes in containers now and then transfer to polytunnel after you finished harvesting the tomatoes in there in a couple month's time.

    Oh Tony, I know your pain. There is a huge number of mainly single/joint parents who know exactly your pain every time their kids go away for the weekend to the other parent. It’s huge, an enormous quiet hole in the house that makes it so empty and dead. I hated it. Now it’s much the same if the dogs go out for a walk with someone and I stay behind hahaha. Life is strange 🤗

    I don't know if its pure luck or what but I've never had a problem growing carrots. I got 24 pounds out of a 5 foot by 2 1/2 foot area this year. And just a couple days ago I dug 68 pounds of potatoes from two 10 foot by 2 1/2 foot beds and four 15 gallon grow bags. I really liked the little tour of the other allotments. Keep up the fine work Tony!

    Tony I've never been able to grow a good crop of carrots the traditional way in all the years I've been gardening but since i converted to growing in carrot boxes I've always had a great crop and its an added bonus that they are grown in the same place every year

  • @colettephilcox231
    @colettephilcox231 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Tony carrots need a more sandy soil, so if you get a deep long flower pot and put a more sandy soil in it then plant ur seeds u will get a bumper crop.

    Hi Tony, when I used to grow carrots, after planting seeds and watering I would cover the row with Hessian sack or wood palings for 7 or 8 days once removed seedling would be showing, was only way for me to keep them damp. Good luck to Reid, I know how hard it is when your kids move on.

    Good for the soul gardening isnt it, I needed some type of peace for my mind after a stressful few years and gardening is my happy place even though flowers are my thing only sort of veg-fruit I've attempted to grow was a experiment of a tomato, pepper seed from Morrisons ( Morrisons) took ages to grow then after a seaweed feed boom my tomato grew like magic still no fruit 🫤 and pepper as paused at 3in for months 😂 but it's fun 😊.

    My carrot attempts are always quite rubbish and unfortunately my cukes are really bitter this year!? It never ceases to amaze me how every growing year is so different and my most obvious mistake is not keeping a diary and making notes to look back on! Your plot and produce all looking lovely Tony.

    • @bewoodford2807
      @bewoodford2807 ปีที่แล้ว

      I m not sure what variety of cucumber you grow, but if it isn't an all female variety, then you need to take off the male flowers to avoid bitterness. I hope this helps you :-)

    Carrots; Not sure if anyone else has mentioned before. Heard that if sow, water in, then cover with cardboard, or something to hold in the moisture. Also sow few beetroot seeds at end of row. Once beetroot germinated, then so should be the carrots. Remove the cover, then jobs a goodn’ 👊

    That was a nice tour of the other plots, it is always interesting to see how others use their space on various allotment sites. I completely understand how you were feeling at the beginning of the video, that "empty nest" feeling never really gets easier. When either of my two come back for any length of time and then go back to their homes, I feel that way too. Getting stuck into the garden or nature really helps me too. And the knowledge that they are both settled and are doing their thing and enjoy coming home for visits also means the feeling doesn't linger as long as it used to. Gosh it used to leave a whole in the house for days after.
    My Christmas potatoes last year were Charlottes from Patch Potatoes and were great except they were ready too early because of the mild Autumn and we had eaten them before Christmas LOL. I grew mine in buckets and had the covered with fleece and in the greenhouse when the temps started to drop.
    I am definitely giving it another go this year, the Christmas seed potatoes are already on order. Carrots have been a disaster this year, such rubbish germination for me too. Definitely the drought early on I just couldn't keep them watered enough and the few that did germinated when it finally rained got eaten off. Gonna sow some Autumn Kings this weekend and some Chantenays in the hope of something in the Autumn, I love pulling a carrot as much as I love digging potatoes up so I will keep trying.

    It’s so hard when the kids have flown the nest , my daughter is 50 now and my son seven years younger , they both live five hours away and you always feel that empty space inside, thank goodness for WhatsApp . But yes once your tending the veg beds and smelling the flowers the ache gets less, yours is looking very productive Tony and I have serious cauliflower envy, I’ve never grown them that big. ❤️

  • @ronguille9721

    I'll say it again, Mr. Tony. Carrots and Parsnips are in the same family. With the hot temperatures they are hard to germinate. I suggested to you already to cover using boards or sheets of cardboard once you plant and water the seed. Those hold the mosture and you can lift on a daily basis to check if there has been germination. Keep the soil damp under the covers until it happens. I just noticed someone below (a) commented saying the same thing! I've also seen Monty Don, Gardeners World do it as well.
