Snorkeling in freezing cold glacial water of lake Silfra in Iceland | Winter activities in Iceland
Welcome to another episode of the #ThisIsNotForMe series, where fairly ordinary people take on extraordinary tasks in Iceland. After climbing a steep ice wall from the Vatnajökull glacier our brave team of students and office workers drove to the lake Silfra. This one of the most famous Icelandic lakes is located in Thingvellir National Park in Iceland. There: Arnor, Fridrik, Anita, and Shanna put on swimsuits, fins, and snorkeling masks. The most challenging part of snorkeling in Silfra or any other glacial lake in Iceland is the water temperature. An average temperature is only between 2 and 4-celsius degrees which is, as the guide for the day stated himself, very cold ;). No wonder most members of the team felt somewhat stressed when they got out of the campers at Silfra. But as soon as after two, three minutes of snorkeling in Silfra excitement took over. The experience truly is one-of-a-kind. With 100 meters of visibility, you feel more like a tiny fish dropped into a gigantic aquarium than a diver in open water. Floating over lava, swimming between large volcanic canyons, diving to the rocky bedrock all of it only about 50 kilometers from Reykjavik. Silfra is the place to go. What are you waiting for? ;)

You were all very brave to try this in wetsuits and not drysuits! How thick was the neoprene, 7mm presumably? I would love to try this sometime, looks really fun!

It looks scarier than it actually is. The wetsuits give more freedom but in our case, no one really took full advantage of it 😅 Good luck on your trip!
