Thanks for the sub! Let me know if there is a particular reel service you want to see. I am getting to the point where I make enough each month to but a reel and service it. I am trying to decide if I should buy a vintage reel to fix up and then sell.
Thanks Matt. Getting ready to tear one down but haven't been into the later 808 models yet, just the earlier Delrin body reels. Thanks also for 'super tune' info!
Cool reel! I don't recall these but that could have been a regional marketing thing? Only HAWGS I met were the 733 direct drives. Zero drag, 20lb. line. Reel in and eat! I think I can rebuild one from two but I might have to hit ebay or craigslist to round out the project. Most memorable reel prior to my Abu 6000 that changed everything. Yes I do currently run some (somewhat current) Zebcos and (nearly antique) Quantums in spinning, casting, and of course spincast but I really need to play in my old toybox... Old friends await...Yep. I dig the inspiration so much! Get out and catch some, reel service is fun but get out and get it done! Thanks man.
Hey Man, I love your demeanor and calming teaching method!! Question, what size are the handle bearings for the 808? You told us the shaft bearing size (8x16x5) What are the other 2? Thanks in advance

Hey there Matthew, I have that same reel for catfishing. I haven't landed anything real large yet. My question is would you still recommend this reel to land catfish around 25-30 pound catfish? Thank you so much!!!
Yes, absolutely With good 20 pound test and using 40 pound leader you could definitely win the battle. Set your drag at about 10 pounds of pull and let the battle begin. Don't let him take too much line and hang on.
You could b the person that could help my hawg-seeker 808. My bite alert quit working right after I bought it. Bait shop couldn't help that much. Changed battery's-dead. Its about as old as when they first came out. I haven't used it that much- I'm disappointed with this bite- alert. Can you help me or give some pointers. Other than this. A great reel. Thanks.😢
Sorry, but I dont have much experience with the electronic bite alert. Did you put the battery in the right way? I bought a 33 with the electronic bite alert. The battery was dead on mine too. I need to put in a new battery.
I'm not worried about it. I'll keep messing with it from time to time. Who knows I might run into a "mad electrician" on the fish bank. Thanks anyway .🤞
Do you think the newer all black 808 would use the same size bearings? And are all three bearings the same size? Just ordered one along with an 888. Thank man love the Zebcos and your upgrade videos.
I looked at the bearings on there for the 888 prostaff and the bearing said 808H as well. I will just measure them when I get the reel. Thanks for the reply.
Can you verify the part number for the bearing retainer clips? The number written on your bag looks like VZ4089-01 which is not found at tackle service
Just curious, do you think sealed bearings would be a good upgrade if using for saltwater? Is it safe to say to buy an 808 and supertune it as it has a better anti reverse system than buying an 888. Also, grab the 888 brass pinion gear if it's interchangeable? Maybe upgrade the plastic drag washers with carbontex? Lastly, what is the difference between the BigCat XT and the 808? I think its just an 808 with bearings?
I dont think the sealed bearings will be any better. Good quality stainless is all you need. Imo. You might be able to get the brass pinion. It should fit if it is the same frame/model. Upgraded drag washers would make it tougher. Not sure it is needed. I dont know the difference between the big cat and the regular 808. It could be bearings.
Yes, they are basically the same. You might still be able to get part on TackleService.com. The other thing you can do is replace the handle bushings with a stainless ball bearing. See my 733 Super Tune Video. Send me a private email. I may have a bushing I can mail you.
Hi Lee, If you are looking for the bearings, you can buy generic ones. Tackle Service is no more. Zebco might have some left over parts, but you will need the part number from a schematic.

The 733 is a great reel and good for lots of heavy fish. But it is not as hefty as the 808 or 888.
