My grandfather was in Stalag Luft VII and went on the long march. His pow journal is fascinating, and contained many drawings of life there. Perhaps Fred was depicted.

My half brother was on this ''Long March'' He was Shot down over the north Sea in 1940, while on a RAF Coastal Command mission . He became prisoner of war, till 1945. He was moved to several Camps, because he made 3 attempts to escape--nearly succeeded, as he was about to board a docked ship in the Baltic, heading for neutral Sweden. He was arrested by a German Policeman. After the war, he kept in contact with the son of the Camp Commodant, who had been a decent man, and treated the prisoner's well, according to International law. I have a German newspaper copy for this period, Stating that, the ''Russkies are coming''. which was why the camps were evacuated. My half brother was awarded the MBE after the war---for all his escapades , trying to escape etc.
