    A lot of volleyball beginners are nervous to set because the ball feels too heavy or it hurts their fingers. With the correct technique, setting should not hurt, and these beginner steps will definitely help new volleyball players get confident with the skill!

      Hi Sarah, thanks for this video! When I'm training in the set position for a long time (I'm just learning for fun, so long = more than 20 min) my neck starts to feel a little unconfortable. Is it normal? I'm wondering if it's just a matter of time to me to get used to it or if you have some tip for me to get my posture right
      Greetings from Brazil (came because of your amazing Haikyuu reactions

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sayuriyoshimoto8850 That is totally normal. Anytime you are looking up for a long time, your neck muscles will start to get sore. If you want to train setting for a long time, I suggest doing some reps laying down in the middle. That way you can keep training and rest your neck.

    I’ve noticed that when you and most people set, your fingers bend back either just before or at contact with the ball. When I set, it’s more of the ball bouncing into fingers, and my fingers sort of guiding it in the direction I want it to go but I don’t have much control of the ball. Sometimes I can get the ball to where I want it to go but I lack consistency and I feel I need to be able to relax my fingers to be able to set like you do. Do u have any tips on doing this???

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Think about relaxing your wrists instead of focusing on your fingers. Let your wrists almost cushion the ball as you make contact so the release is nice and soft. Let me know if that helps.

    Hi Sarah, I'm a beach player (from 20 years ago) who's playing setter for an indoor team for the first time. I'm getting general feedback that my hands are slow/deep dish. I would love to hear any advice you may have for quickening up hands, explaining "fast finish", or generally reducing the risk of getting called for a carry

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah... setting is VERY different from beach to indoor. I would say that you should first think about your contact point. The ball should be contacted above your forehead every single time. The high contact point doesn't really lend itself to holding the ball for very long. In order to get a fast release, you can try to think about using your wrists more. That might help speed things up a bit. I hope that helps!

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I'm so glad to hear that it helped you! I find that when we try to go meet the ball with our hands, that is when our fingers become more tense. Think about letting the ball come down to you instead. Let the ball touch the full pad of your fingers instead of just the tips, and hopefully that will cushion it a little more. I hope that helps!

      I would try making sure that your elbows are bent and that your hands are close to your forehead, even when the ball is high. My instinct is that your hands are reaching toward the ball when it is high, so you have to catch the ball in order to push it.

      @SarahPavanVolleyball  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A double touch happens when the ball touches each hand individually instead of together. The ball needs to touch both hands at the same time. The main indication that a double touch has happened is the ball spinning a lot on release.

    That's interesting that you dont want the set to spin. Spin adds stability, especially to projectiles. If you dont have a spin on it, wouldn't it be liable to start knuckling? I know that if you add spin, it's possible for the Magnus effect to alter the trajectory too, but I dont think the effect will be that severe. If anything, the risk of one seems about as likely as the risk of the other, so what's the logic to not have a spin? Hopefully that made sense hahaha

    • @fitk10
      @fitk10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem with the spin is that it's against the rules. To have too much spin is an "illegal" set, so it's part of the technique to be able to set without spin.

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball

      @Fit Kristen is correct in that creating no spin on the set is part of the challenge of volleyball. Also, it is actually much more accurate to set a ball with no spin than to attempt creating spin and still getting the ball where you want it to go. With the speed of the contact, it would be incredibly difficult to generate the type of spin you are talking about and get the ball to the location you are aiming for. In beach volleyball, understanding how the wind manipulates a set is part of the challenge as well.... execute a precise set despite the wind.

    Sarah, when I was an NCAA player in the 80s, the setting motion was a springy-wrist motion, index fingers and thumbs made a triangle shape. My daughter plays now, but the "new" style of setting, like you show in your video, is less triangle, fingers are now more pointing forward, and instead of springy-wrist and flexible fingers, the fingers are stiffer and the ball seems to be pushed off stiff finger tips. There also a difference in sound. Springy-wrist is a quiet set, stiff fingers gives an audible slap at the ball. Can you tell me why setting technique changed? What is the advantage of the "new" stiff fingertip setting? It seems more injury-prone (especially when receiving a high pass) and less ball control. My daughter prefers springy-wrist and says stiff-fingered setting to her feels like slapping at the ball. Is there a disadvantage to her continuing to use springy-wrist, or should she change her setting style?

      The speed of the sets has definitely gotten a lot faster over the years because refs are calling lifts if the ball is held for too long. I wouldn't say that the fingers should be stiff though... if find that a lot of kids make their fingers stiff because they are so focused on letting the ball just touch their fingertips. The hand positioning is similar, but the release just has to be quick, with the contact on the full pad of the fingers, cradling the ball. I'm not sure if that answers you question at all, but the fingers should definitely still be relaxed... not tense.

    I cant seem to set the ball well. The ball will always tend to slip out of my hand, even tho I have big ass hands. I also find it hard setting a ball that is going fast towards me. Id hurt my fingers if I set it. :((

      Without actually seeing you set, I can't tell you what's going wrong with 100% certainty, but here are a couple things it might be:
      1. Think about creating one "basket" with both hands to cradle the ball. Sometimes people put their hands two small and make 2 "baskets" for 1 ball.
      2. You may be flicking your wrists, instead of keeping them solid straight through contact.
      3. Your fingers might be too stiff. Let your fingers relax and mold around the ball instead of making them tense.
      Hopefully one of these pointers will help!

    Mam,can you please tell me which one is better--slow setting and fast setting?

      It depends on what offense you are running. A fast set is nice to beat the blockers, but it is important to know how to set a slower, higher set after defense.

      Think about creating one "basket" with your hands instead of two little baskets with each hand. Your hands need to work together to create one big cradle for the ball.
