Much appreciated. Just bought a house and have a deck similar to this. I've built decks before but they were pretty low to the ground. You gave me the confidence to conquer the deck at the "new" house. Thanks so much and great job! You made it look easy. Also, much thanks to all providing pointers in the comments!
Isn't it great watching DIY Dozier get after this demolition project, especially after letting us know he was essentially figuring it out as he went? Impressively rotty deck steps, BTW. Mine go this weekend--thanks for the vid, DIY!
Maaaannnn. Just watching you “Spartan Kick” the railings down got me hyped up and scared to death at the same time lol. That’s a 13’ drop? Wow. I started doing the exact same thing as you but my deck is 400 sqft and only 2 feet off the ground hehe. I realized that the new boards wasn’t fitting in between the other boards because it was wet so I started removing 3 rows at a time. Removing the boards was kicking my arse so I ended up getting a “Deck Wrecker”. Best single use tool I’ve ever purchased. The deck is like an onion; every time you peel a layer there’s more surprises underneath. Anyways, great job on the deck and good luck with those stairs brother
Nice work, i don’t know much about Alabama weather, I live in northern Michigan, I worked construction for a couple years and we put a a 1/4 in shim between each deck board for swelling and shrinking from rain and snow so it doesn’t split the rafter and support beams, also I would have used L brackets to secure your main post to the deck boards, then you won’t have end splitting on your railing posts, I’ve heard you can get hellacious storms so you can put storm ties on the outside of your post to help with the strength as well, but that is just my experience up north. Love your work

@@diydozier3205 your end results was undeniably well done, you’ve gotta be proud, so I am curious as I’m sure others are, how’s your daily driver holding up? And when do you think we will see an update on the stang?
@Travis Majszak the mustang is coming along. It will be a little bit before the update. I stepped off into a bit of a business endeavor in October and it has taken a lot of my time. I've had to rearrange my life for it. Really I should start a vlog about my life. Bomb drop...I sold the truck. Had to fund my new business. I absolutely hated this. But you have to do what's best for your family sometimes. I'm thinking if I started just videoing day to day life I could keep folks posted on projects and daily life. Lol
I've not done any framing or deck building, myself but, as an apprentice electrician, I was privy to lots of info watching how the framers built things and, from all those observations, I gathered that most (if not all) of them just used the screws they were using as the spacers. Placing them somewhat evenly along the length between a deck board already fastened to the joists and the one they were going to install next spaced the boards somewhere around 3/16" apart, which was enough. I'm sure he's also going to be experiencing a lot of puddling on his deck after a rain or snow melt. I hope he enjoyed rebuilding his deck...he may be doing it, again, in just a few years.😵💫
Redoing my massive deck as we speak 1988 house - things I’ve learned, if your going to replace decking, at very least invest in joist tape, when putting in posts box them in use deck ties and bolts all the way trough 6x6 and the wood you’ve boxed it in with. I’m also not putting balasters ack up I’m doing cable railing, also as long as your pulling up boards it’s a good time to check out joists, they had no joist support’s between all my joists so I cut and placed supports as I went along it will make your deck much stronger
Good Job! One note.. would've made it easier laying deck boards if you would've pulled up two at a time and not replaced one for one, leaving always the next one open so you could easily pull up the next board without it being next to your new board AND you would easily be able to see where the joist is so you can ensure your screws are lined up properly.

Took me about 15 boards in to figure that out. Lol. I started doing that about a 1/3 of the way in...Stopped showing the process by that point.

No. They shrink when they dry out. There’s 1/4” gaps now.
U should be using min 2 1/2 screws. Oh ok. There u go
Never mind. 5/4 board is an inch thick. 2 1/2 3 inch. Especially cause there’s existing holes from decking. It would give something to grab
@@cody27491 pretty sure I used 3" screws to grab deeper into the joists which were soft.
