Why the drastic crude oil price drop raises hopes of a fuel price cut in India
India, a big importer of crude, will gain from the falling prices, but consumers stand to benefit only if the Centre and the states slash taxes on fuel
In times of escalating tensions in the Middle East, which is bracing for the fallout of the serial pager and walkie-talkie blasts in Lebanon, allegedly targeted against the Hezbollah by Israel, crude oil prices have fallen drastically to below $70 a barrel. Prices were at $69 a barrel on September 10, the lowest in three years.
The fall in prices will have a positive impact on India, a big importer of crude. However, consumers stand to gain real benefit only if the Centre and the states slash taxes on fuel. Will they?
The fall in crude prices in the international market has been quite contrary to forecasts at the beginning of 2023. Most observers had said prices would remain over $80 a barrel throughout the year. Ever since the fall, Brent crude oil prices have inched higher and were at $74.69 a barrel on September 20. Experts say the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate cut by 50 basis points is further expected to shore up oil prices since it will lead to a weaker dollar and stronger prices for dollar-denominated commodities.
But what were the reasons for crude prices falling below $70 in the first place? According to a research note from the Bank of Baroda, it was driven by a combination of factors. First, the decision of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) to cut its forecast for oil demand in 2024 and 2025. The amount is not as much as the trimming of its forecast of increase in demand from 2.11 million barrels a day to 2.03 million. But the price impact was sharp.
