I like you and love your playing. When I was young, I was made to take piano. When I missed a note (my fault I know) my teacher would smack my fingers very hard with her Sheaffer white dot pencil. I got to dislike my lessons very much. You lit a fire in me, I am now 81. I want to re-learn again and am now not afraid of the pencil.

This is AWESOME. Most videos that talk about improv and lead sheets dont show any sort of logic on how and where to put the notes on the left hand. Most just say "you need to master chords and scales and it will come naturally" or variations of this idea. Terrible!!! But you gave some principles and logic on how to improv. THanks a lot!!! Please make more of these! Or build a course on improv principles and logic! Thanks a lot, truly.

Sangah, the way you walk bass is incredible. It's something I've unsucessfully been trying to mimic (not the 1-5-1 in this video, but this slightly more advanced thing you tend to do). If eventually you ever get around to making a breakdown similar to this one of common left hand patterns you use, that would be a great day indeed

    Sangah,
As a pianist who uses lead sheets and pretty much taught myself how to use them I think your description was amazing simply for novices and beginners. I know many will get much knowledge from your lesson here today.
The one thing I love about lead sheet reading is being able to translate the melody into any genre of music you want. You can take a jazz song and make it sound like hip hop and you can take a country song and make it sound like jazz. Always fun!
Please tell me where can I see you perform in person? I always see your live screenings, but would love to see you in person at a lounge.

Nice! I grew up playing lead sheet style for my church choir without knowing it was “a thing”. Glad you put this video together. Now I can explain to my kids and share this video with them. You are correct!! I too have observed that many who have learnt the classical route strictly, cannot play a number impromptu or give life to a number with just the lead sheet.

Thanks. I’m a fan of listening to your music, and play a bit myself, mostly by making up my own arrangements with a fake book.
Would sure love to hear more ideas about things to do with your left hand. I noticed that when you put your left hand is always very busy. Sometimes I think you’re playing 16th notes or even 32th neats with the 1sr degree or 8th degree of the chord. You have some matrix to introduce rhythm, which make sure music so interesting.
I already do what you’ve done in this video. If you get in the mood to take it to another level, I think Mavis would be appreciative.
    Thanks again!🙏🙏🎶🎵🎹

I started doing that in my early 20's (after having played classical piano for years), little by little I stared to figure out how to improvise (that was pre-internet). Eventually I got to be decent but then you reach a plateau and it gets hard to find new ideas. I feel that once you've past a certain level of proficiency in your improvising, the one thing that can stop you from improving further is rhythm, how confortable you are at using more complex and intricate rhythm in your left hand while not affecting the right hand. And even more essential is general timing: how you maintain the beat while adding complexity to your accompaniment, whether you play slow, or fast runs. It feels like a life time of learning. I think Sangah that your playing is outstanding, but your sense of timing is just exceptional, something that I pretty much cannot find in other piano players (even very good ones).

This post is a year after you did this. I just discovered you and so I have been catching up on what I have been missing. This is fun exercise that encourages me to be experimental in painting musically a bit more freely. Your expressive voice reassuring me to let my sense of the music to be and come to the forefront rather than being too tightly wound around the written page. I will listen to it again. The key was you said paraphrase music is so much more than what's on the page. I interpreted as with the simplified notation it binds you less to it and sets you free to create in the blanks. Oh, I did it this exercise with you. It was fun just to let go and give the process a whirl. Its only me sitting here so what's to worry. Its easy to listen to your voice and of course musically my ears love it. My ears are smiling right now. Thanks!

A GREAT video! I have been playing theatre pipe organ for 50 years and use this method almost all the time. It does free you up to have fun playing. I have never heard the music described as Lead sheets. We always called it Fake sheets. Found in the many Fake Books that are available. I first learned piano. When I started playing organs with multiple stacked keyboards, a 32 note pedal, expression pedals and many stopkeys, I found out Lead, Fake sheets were the best for my limited skills.

As a recent beginner player I have not loved lead sheets. They felt incomplete. You might see a chord but there was no direction where to play it and that C chord could be played in various places during the same song. But I have to say this video has me feeling a bit more positive about lead sheets. I think b/c I’m such a beginner I want to learn to play well and to read music and not make mistakes while I’m building a foundation. But your philosophy of finding your own sound is very liberating so I’ll work more on giving myself permission to play so that I like how it sounds without worrying that it’s wrong. Can’t wait to see what you get up to in Pianote in June :)

Thank you for sharing this lesson. I’m just learning how to play the piano and hopefully I can become an lounge and jazz player some day.
You make a Great teacher! I wish you can do more of these piano lessons more often. With lead sheets, I can see how you can come up with your own style.
    Once you master the fundamental.
You’re right, about develops your own style that reflection on your personality of who you are. When I’m working on a painting, I had developed my own style of painting that comes from years of years of practice the basic foundation in art,
I think it’s the same in music.
Thanks again and keep doing more of these lessons it help a lot for beginners.
    Take Care and “God Blessed”🙏🙏🙏

Thank you Sangah Noona for this! It means a lot coming from someone like you. Honestly all these while I can only cope playing with chord sheets (melody by ear or largely trial and error - nature of self-taught?). I often feel "inferior" than those who can read piano scores and I think you just hit it on the nail that is equally (or more) important to give it more thoughts and create our own "sound" and interpretation. I'll surely think about this before making my next music cover! Thank you!

I don't play (as so many of you do) but, nonetheless, I found this extremely interesting. There is a knack to teaching, to instruction. How do you keep the student engaged and at the same time able to pickup what you are trying to get across. You are actually very good at that. A big part is, also, being comfortable with and trusting of the teacher. You got that covered. The folks seeing you in the Pianote stream are very fortunate students, indeed! Good luck! 😎❤
