DAY TRIP to Callao from Lima! 🚘🌴 | Fortress Labyrinth + Going Inside a SUBMARINE + Italian Food!

- We're taking you on a day trip to Callao from Lima! In this video, we'll explore some of the main attractions in and around La Punta. We'll tour a fortress that once defended the port from pirates, we'll walk down the colourful streets of Zona Monumental del Callao, we'll climb into a Peruvian submarine, and we'll end the day with some delicious Italian food. So let's kick off this day trip!
Places we visited in Callao:
Fortress Real Felipe:
This fortress was built during the Viceroyalty of Peru, when Callao was the main port of the Americas and connected the colonies with Spain. At that time, there was the threat of pirates and corsairs, and in fact, due to inadequate defences, several pirate attacks did take place. When in 1746, a powerful earthquake and a tsunami that followed destroyed most of the existing defences, the viceroy ordered this fortress to be built. And this would become one of Spain’s most important constructions in the New World.
Peruvian Army Museum:
At the end of our visit, we went inside the Peruvian Army Museum, which has one section dedicated to the Incas and their art and culture, and another one showcasing historical uniforms, weapons and other military paraphernalia.
Zona Monumental del Callao:
Next, we walked around some of the side streets just outside the fortress. As you can see, this is a historic area that has kind of been overlooked and neglected for a long time, but slowly, certain areas are starting to come back to life - even if it’s one street at a time. Our first stop was Zona Monumental del Callao. This is a colourful up-and-coming area featuring lots of street art, independent shops and restaurants. The glass covered gallery formerly known as Casa Ronald, is now an art hub featuring various exhibitions ranging from photography to murals to sculptures.
Abtao Peruvian Submarine:
Then we spotted a submarine, so we took a small detour to check that out before going to lunch. Because I mean, how often do you get the chance to explore a submarine up close and personal? This was one of four submarines for the Peruvian Navy that were constructed in the United States based on US Navy's Mackerel class submarine. These were the last submarines constructed by the US for the export market. Abtao served for 48 years in the Navy and made 5003 dives. It was decommissioned in 1999 and in 2004 it became the first floating museum in Latin America.
Taller Razeto
For lunch, we went to Taller Razeto. This is an Italian restaurant and because our relatives are friends with the owners, we first visited with them and also met their cat! We ordered a prosciutto pizza and spaghetti a la puttanesca. We were both very happy with our meals! And for dessert, we tried a few different desserts including the pecan pie, the Nutella cheesecake, and the homemade tiramisu - each one better than the next!

I loved Callao region! When I went to Lima, I remember going to Callao but just to board a boat to visit nearby Islas Palominos, to see the sea lions. I did not know there was so much to do there! Great video!

@@samuelandaudrey The funniest part of this boat tour is when you jump into the water in the middle of the ocean and hundreds of sea lions come around you. Sometimes they get so close and give little bites to check what you are 😄

So much see and do in Callao. It's on our bucket list. The sub and fortress tour is something. So Cool. I had the pleasure 6 years ago in San Diego along the Embarcadero where the U.S.S. Midway

Hello another place to visit could be Cieneguilla in the outskirts of Lima, you will have sunshine guaranteed, I would recomend the restaurant/club of “Mesa de Piedra” you have swimming pool and the Lurin river just next to it, it takes roughly 1 hour to get there from Miraflores and on the way you will see the East part of the city, a different microclimate, also the Inca fortress of Puruchuco is another option on the east side of Lima, just some ideas for you guys to expand your knowledge of Lima. Personally I prefer bathing in the river and playing with my kids there.

The sub tour was interesting made in US. I toured a WW2 sub much older. Love your work. The wine and pasta was very good no doubt.
Very cool! This is the only submarine we've ever been in, but it'd be interesting to see some even older ones.
I'm from Lima and i eat Italian food in the begining of my memories so back in time peruvian food was not famous at all so when i was young we eat dishes like fideos rojos, fideos verdes, sopa a la minuta, lasaña, pan frances, sopa menestron, a lot of food variants from france and italy.
Hiya again, another place I stay is San Bartolo Town, now airb&b departments are cheaper given summer has ended but still there is decent weather and cool sunsets, there is rock formation to climb like el “bufadero” and a long malecón, some good restaurants too, from San Bartolo you can the venture to Aspitia a few kilometres south where you can taste river lobsters and do some walking along the river down in the valley.
I just looked at pictures of San Bartolo. It looks like such a nice beach town - the perfect weekend destination. Also added to our wishlist for next time!

The Italian food looked great, I need to give that place a try. The thing I hate about Italian food in Peru and it's something that people from the U.S. take for granted, they have never heard of veal! No Italian place in Lima has something as basic as veal parmesan! In Peru, veal is called "ternera" and Peru claims to have ternera but it is not real ternera and I know this because there is NO WAY they are serving veal at an 8 soles "menu" lunch! Get real. You go to a butcher market anywhere in Lima and ask for veal, ternera, it's NOT veal. Veal is a light pink color, not red! Italian food in Peru is basic and simple: pasta and pizza! No veal parmesan!
