- There used to be more than 50 streams throughout Vancouver. Now there are only a couple still visible. Where did they go? Why should we care? Uytae Lee unearths Vancouver's underground streams in his About Here column with CBC Vancouver.

There is more sophistication to this topic. For example if the stream has a very shallow flow (ie: flows very slowly) it is conducive to mosquitoes, methane build up and well disease. Putting a stream underground when you have a city of people (and don't want disease) is a good idea (especially in the early 1900's). What is truly a bad idea is combining sewerage systems and stormwater drainage. The focus should and water management priority should be in splitting the sewerage systems from stormwater drainage. That infrastructure development should take precedence over the 'light of day' program.

On the topic of flooding due to climate change - any flooding that occurs could be due to blockages in the drain system (bad maintenance) or not designing a draining for a 50 (or 80) year return period ie: bad engineering. Climate change is resulting in 50 year return periods happening more regularly, but the drain should already allow for that. It is unacceptable that a city like, say, Johannesburg can handle a 50 year storm flood and Vancouver cannot. So the result is to simply widen existing drains or build a second drain alongside an existing drain.

Spot on as usual.. you really have raised the bar !! One thing I am curious about is why we do not use our waterways for transportation beyond the Lonsdale quay. Ambleside to ubc comes to mind or other busy routes around second narrows .. surely someone must have touted these ideas in the past

i knew exactly where you were from the first shot -- off Still Creek Drive. I used to work at a building a block from there, and would walk across the bridge all the time.

Cool, but Still Creek is one of the most commonly flooded areas in the Metro Van. On very rainy days we station tow trucks there.
I grew up in Vancouver. Don't think I ever met anyone from Vancouver.

Cool idea, but I wonder if the stream alone is enough, don't they require sloped basins around them to accept rainwater runoff? And if we use concrete for the basins, perhaps the basins end up too big for the creek so we get flash flooding, or too limited causing the creek to under-perform.
