    Some things I didn't touch on in the video I'll add right here:
    Ergonomics - the camera is so small that it is easy to hold, the rubber(?) grip on the front is nice and is easy to use one-handed. I usually keep my index finger on the zoom lever and my thumb on the control dial.The only buttons I regularly use are the AF Lock and the ISO. I exclusively shoot in Manual mode on this camera
    Autofocus - works like a charm, honestly very impressive for a camera of this age. There is a clip of me focusing at 6:23 to show how quick it is even in low light
    Video - mine doesn't work so I have never tested it, but I imagine it's not very good lol
    Film Simulations - the only one I've used is Dynamic B&W and I like it a lot. I only ever shoot RAW, but shooting in Dynamic B&W adds a Yellow Filter on RAW images so when they are converted back to B&W in post they are super punchy
    Lens - the lens is really sharp, especially when you are on the wider end. The 24-90mm range is perfect because it can do both close-up wide angle street photography as well as using the telephoto to frame up an isolated scene. The step zoom feature is super handy for quickly changing focal lengths
    File Size - another big plus of this camera is the tiny RAW files, I can easily and quickly move them around from the camera to my hard drive to my phone for editing
    After over a year, I have learned the camera well enough that it's limitations don't bother me and I can use it as effectively on the street as my Fujifilm cameras, maybe more. Overall, this camera is so unique and quirky that it is just a joy to use

    The film like rendering is also the result of the use of a CCD sensor rather than the more popular CMOS. Leica M8 despite having many shortcomings, still fetches a lot of money on the used market mainly due to the CCD sensor and an almost film like rendering. My old Nikon D70 and Nikon D200 also had a CCD sensors.

      Exactly. And while the LX7 has some advantages, it’s also considerably more expensive, double the price or more of the LX5, and it uses a CMOS sensor.

    What a refreshing review….great vid Joe. I bought the LX7 new in 2014 and still use it despite having several Olympus OMD cameras.
    It’s size enables it to be a truly pocketable camera. The aperture ring on the LX7 is very usefull …so easy to use . I purchased the detachable viewfinder which is a godsend in bright sunlight. You make a very good observation about the quality of images when viewing on the camera body screen. I find that This applies to many of the older digital cameras. In fact the images from the LX7 to be very good when viewed on the I-pad as I am not a pixel peeker ! I look forward to seeing more of your videos on affordable oldies. I
    recently obtained a Ricoh Caplio GX100 it’s body shape resembles the current GR range. It has a 10mp sensor which gives adequate results for my granddaughter!

    You're right, the LX7 is a worthwhile upgrade to the LX5. One of the biggest advantages is the optional LVF2 viewfinder is far superior to the LVF1. It's in my pocket all the time. The glass on the LX7 camera is excellent and with the improved 1.4 aperture does well in low light.

    • @joe_tographer

      @GABRIEL_CRAFT ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@joe_tographerThe sensor actually changed in the LX-7 to MOS (so no more CCD) I couldn't tell a difference from the images on DP review so I looked for a LX-7 because I wanted the aperture ring and good screen. I don't regret my choice but digicam peeps are hype on CCD sensors so you have the last one of the LX series :) PS REALLY WOULD LOVE TO SEE ANOTHER video of a side by side comparison of street photography with the LX5 & 9ne of your Fujis

    I have the lx7 and have found it v good. I love the manual buttons which make life a lot easier than a lot of the digital menu screens. The video quality isn’t too bad either. Full HD on the 7, but this drops to 720p I think it you got to 60fps. Having an f1.4 aperture is the best plus point for me. It’s not a perfect camera, but one you can take out and use without too much worry compared to some tech at massively higher budgets.

    Nice vid and photos 📷 👌
    Back around this era I had a pocket size canon 5mp with same little zoom. The images from it were so amazing for that era and, like yours, it was a Zeiss Lens. That is the critical factor. 👊👍👍👍
    When I was learning photography I shot consistently for years with the same body and lens. Then one day I was loaned a different lens for my body. Boom... the penny dropped. My photos were instantly different. Different character, colour, sharpness, tones, clarity. This is how I became interested in old vintage lenses. All unique in their rendering of the image.
    So I'm currently shooting XT3 with a whole host of vintage glass, none more than £20.00, some £6.00, and also shooting an old 8mp Canon 30d given to me , fitted with an STM 50mm f1.8. I love it. I tend to shoot the Canon jpeg only in black and white.
    Photography does not have to be expensive but that comes with time and understanding of the craft.
    Take care
    Regards
    Steve. 👊👋

    I shoot the LX7 and I absoulutely love it. Bought in 2021, and I got 3 of them with some haggling and stuff, I have about $130 all in for the three cameraes. The LVF-2 which is the Viewfinder for the LX7 and GX1 is going for about the same ($130ish) and I bought one of those as well. It is a very, very different beast than the more rudimentary LVF-1 for the LX5, GF1 and GF2.

    The LX7 loses the CCD sensor which is one of the biggest draws for people when it comes to these older cameras. If you want technical improvements there's options like the Nikon P7800 that might be a better option depending on what you're looking for. TBH, I think a Pentax 7/QS-1 would prob be up there with the best, but the 08 Wide Zoom has multiplied in rarity and price sadly. I use a Pentax MX-1 (basically a Q7/QS-1 with a pretty good fixed lens and amazing body) a ton, but those have also shot up in price :(.

    • @joe_tographer

    In addition to the low resolution you mention, I've read that CCD sensors give you a more film-like look than more modern CMOS ones. In my photo library, I have some photos from my first digital camera from years ago (2.2MP) that look a lot like film, especially when lightly edited. I have to wonder if the engineers worked on getting that film look to compensate for the lack of pixels.
    Good job with this review!
    * Don't laugh. It was impressive by 2002 standards.

    • @thegall7437
      @thegall7437 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lack of pixels is what makes the look. The pixels that are there are bigger, capturing more light and color depth. LX5 is good precisely because it is only 10MP. Add the fast aperture and large sensor size for compact and these specs make it the best end of the line compact CCD by image quality.

      Thanks for watching! The LX line is solid throughout, but for me the charm of the CCD sensor and the price makes the older cameras stand out. The LX10 will be a much more modern point and shoot vs the LX5, so if that's what you're looking for then there you go! 🤙

    My first "Street" camera was something similar, an Olympus X-Z1, a sweet little camera with a similar size sensor and a longer zoom at 24-110mm equivalent. I've made 13x19 prints for the files. BUT, "the best street camera" is highly subjective based on how you see, how you shoot and what you shoot. I'm firmly in the long zoom camp. My "Street Camera" for the last 7 years has been a Nikon V3 (ridiculously expensive at the time, and still is, but been worth every penny). With the 10-100mm (27-270) lens I can shoot from one side of the street to the other, upper floors, down the block, ... wherever. It's compact, the AF is fast and accurate, the lens is sharp at any aperture, I can shoot 20fps in RAW or 60fps in jpg and it doesn't scream PROFESSIONAL. It has its quirks and frustrations but it's still the "Best Street Camera" I've ever used.

    I think the reason that Fuji tends to come up for street photographers is the retro styling and the film simuations. Beyond that (aside from the dials) they are basically the same as your regular cameras like the XS-10 or anything Canon, Nikon and Sony make. I guess people have the obsession thinking that the "best" street photography cameras resemble old-style film SLR cameras. And there might be some merit to that in that it's about a shooting experience, whereas the modernized cameras are more about specs and speed and capabilities, and probably less on the actual shooting experience (especially as it relates to film-style shooting where you manually set your aperture and shutter speed and ISO using dials, in some cases using old-fashioned aperture rings like on some Fuji lenses). But you are correct in saying that Fuji is not the only option, and I know a lot of successful street photographers that use your every-day cameras like full frame DSLRs from Canon and Nikon, or Sony cameras. But I think there is something about Leicas and Fuji's (and to an extent, Olympus cameras like the OM-D M10 series) that appeals to street photographers, and it's not performance, but the style and experience, and maybe aesthetics too.
    For a beginner street photographer I would just get something like a used Olympus OM-D m4/3 camera as you can get those cheap used. Start with that. I see the Fuji options more as an enthusiast level camera, or someone who is experienced and has mastered the basic exposure theory. Panasonic and Olympus's m4/3 systems tend to be a bit more beginner friendly, with more "auto" options and help menus, so those might be a good option to start with, or even a basic cheap entry-level DSLR from Canon or Nikon if you can find one (less elegant, but usually easy to use).

    That's crazy. I bought this when it was new specifically because it had the best low light performance of any non pro camera at the time. The sensor was also pretty impressive, turning out much better pics than others in its price range with a lot more Mp's.

    • @joe_tographer
      @joe_tographer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd say it holds up. The poor high ISO performance gets balanced out a lot by the IBIS and wide aperture, not to mention the flash. It really feels like an early DSLR level of quality packed into a point and shoot body. I sold it a few months ago and regret it a lot

    Still have my LX3, use the black-and-white option a lot, really black, high contrast. Also own an X100F with great B&W, as well as the basic crome, plus the options for saved recipes, just feels big and heavy compared with the tiny LX3, buying a viewfinder for £30 to help in bright conditions. Going to try the Duracell battery for £16. Notice they have all gone up in price, a friend bought an LX3 for £40 a few months ago, and now £120 plus, The Fuji affect.....

    Nicely done. This actually hues a lot closer to the "f8 and be there" aesthetic of documentary photography than poseur'ing around a M11 mated to a Summilux.
    The small sensor LX5, even when shot at f2, provides the extended depth-of-field as afforded by f8 on 135 format camera. The bright lens keeps noise under control. The relatively low resolution and relatively low dynamic range of the sensor is lots closer to pushed Tri-X in 135.
    I'd say the only concern is whether the LX5 is fast enough. Fast as in no lag between shutter button press and image recording. However, as the excellent photos exhibits that's apparently not an issue. Some of the images echos Ernst Haas' work on Kodachrome.

    • @joe_tographer
      @joe_tographer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thank you Robert, being mentioned even in the same breath as Haas is a compliment I don't deserve. I usually shoot my Fuji's at f8 and zone focus, so I can keep a similar shooting style with my Lumix.
      In terms of write speed or burst speed, I'm sure most would say it is not, but I like to embrace the challenge.
      Thanks a lot for watching and leaving your thoughts, they are greatly appreciated!! 🙌

    My 1st digital camera was the LX3. Loved that camera. Lite. Small. The zoom was the range I shoot in normally. Went with the GX 85 and G9 with the 17mm lens. I didn’t use the LX3 much so I gave it to a buddy.
    Now using Fuji. Still use the M43 gear but mostly Fuji. Have an XP3, XT30, and just bought an XT4 used on Craigslist. I want to shoot short vids and have IBIS. Hope this is a good choice. Besides the kit lens have the 23,35,50 crons. Love these lenses. Have the gear. Now I have to go out and use it. Work six nights a week so my gear doesn’t get much use. I am too tired. So sad.

    Love your review! I fell in love with multi-aspect ratio while using this camera, and have been dumbfounded why the public has mostly not caught on for how marvelous it is to frame images in different aspect ratios in the field, with the ability to use the full lens circle. Sadly, the LX-10 abounded multi-aspect, and the LX-100 is much bigger, but it's a marvelous camera with a stellar all-glass lens. And the price has been reduced too. Panasonic has abandoned multi-aspect in the rest of their cameras too, except, I think for one low rez M43 camera designed for video.
    It looks like the LX-100 II may be the last model made in the LX series using multi-aspect. I was hoping they would produce one that used the full height of the sensor so square would use the entire lens circle too.
    I can't figure out why multi-aspect didn't become popular, and why it's never been in full frame too. With wide angle lenses especially, it's a joy to use the entire lens circle regardless the aspect chosen. 4/3 or square would be awesome for northern lights, to get a much wider field of view with a 12mm lens, for example.
    Do you have any ideas why hardly any photographers seem to appreciate Panasonic's aspect ratio feature?
    Many of the camera reviewers don't even mention the multi-aspect feature when reviewing these cameras. Thanks for doing so.

    • @joe_tographer
      @joe_tographer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the kind words. I'm not sure why it never took off, my guess is for most people who never used it, it may come off a bit gimmicky or unnecessary. My guess though is that as modern cameras' resolutions got pushed further and further, it became a little hypocritical to include this feature, as one of the big marketing/selling points of high-resolution sensors is the cropping ability. Personally, I think it wouldn't be that hard to include in modern cameras, and would actually be helpful for people who want higher res cameras. Personally though, I'm not mad - I feel like it is a feature that adds to the fun factor, which is the whole reason I use this older camera anyway. For me, the uniqueness of it is just another reason I find the LX5 so delightfully quirky. Thanks for tuning in!

    • @jefffenske1958
      @jefffenske1958 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joe_tographer That’s a good point regarding how it’s easier to crop from an image and still have enough resolution in many cases with the higher resolution sensors. The need to get as many megapixels out of an image is less important. But I’m thinking that with compact, 1 inch sensor cameras, the resolution is still only 20 MP. Maybe since most people don’t need a lot of resolution to post on the internet, it’s not a big deal.
      For me, the multi-aspect ratio sensor in the LX-5 is about composition. We choose when we are shooting what is the best aspect ratio for the given scene - which we then see in the viewfinder.
      So often, 2:3 is not the best format. Multi-aspect helps us compose on-sight the best aspect ratio for what we’re shooting.
      And with wide angle, 16:9 gives us about a 22 mm wide view, wider than what the 3:2 image is at 24mm.
      4:3 on the LX-5 is also more expansive than if we cropped 4/3 from a RX100 VII.
      And with the widest fixed length lenses on a 35mm camera, like a 12 mm lens, cropping isn’t what we want. We want to be able to use the entire image circle when shooting 4:3, 16:9 or even 1:1.
      I think that one of the problems with multi-aspect never catching on is that Panasonic didn’t market the feature well, so most people don’t know who creative, useful and fun it is.
      And most reviewers completely ignored the feature, instead of trying to understand its massive benefits.
      As sensors are become less expensive to produce, now that the technology is dialed in, I would think Panasonic could use oversized sensors to set a new standard of excellence in creativity and useability, but they appear to be abandoning multi-aspect, except for video.
      The LX100 III seems likely to never happen. And they didn’t design their full frame, 35mm SLRs with multiaspect, to get the most from especially wide-angle lenses.
      I’m so disappointed that this wonderful feature wasn’t marketed well, and how so few people seem to realize what a wonderful feature it is.
      At least they stepped out and used this unique feature. Thank you, Panasonic.
      I’ve long thought that manufacturers should even go beyond Panasonic’s multi-aspect design, to use an oversized square sensor, so that most of the entire lens is used for 1:1, and to even use the entire lens to capture a circular image, whatever the lens sees, which would be especially great to use with fisheye lenses.

    • @joe_tographer
      @joe_tographer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difference is very scientific, to try and put it into plain words: the differences are in the tonal curves and the colors. CMOS is more true to the human eye, while CCD will give you more of a 'look' for lack of a better word. CMOS will protect your highlights while CCD is very susceptible to blowing out the highlights. CCD colors tend to be more vivid and more vibrant. Idk how to tell you which to get, I would look at photos of both cameras on lomography.com

      I probably won't ever make a video on this, as my phone camera itself isn't very good (Pixel 4), but in my opinion it depends on what kind of look you like because the photos wouldn't be similar at all. I personally don't like using phones for photography, the process just doesn't excite me at all - I need a real camera in my hands, which is in fact the main way I use this camera.

    Fujifilm is niche. A bit less niche than Ricoh but way less expensive than a Leica, but fujifilm cameras have great film like looking photos. If that’s what you like, then go for it. But, you can buy an $150 canon t1i with a lens and shoot to your hearts content.

    These 10 megapixel CCD cameras with fast lenses tick all the boxes for excellent color on street photography. Mine is the Olympus version, same 1:1.6, sensor, stabilizer, the XZ-1. I am always embarrassed what good pictures come from it, and the many scenarios it covers. I think my big camera feels jilted wihen I leave it home.

    I'm gonna be so honest, I think that whilst you can and will get amazing pictures with almost any camera (even a 3.4mp one) I believe that learning how to shoot with a decent performing mirrorless camera is an important way to learn and will fast track skills that can be passed onto other cameras. Yes, they're expensive however you're paying for the certainly that YOU are the problem, not the gear, I would never personally recommend someone shoot with an old janky point and shoot just because of it being old and janky and in order to get the best out of them you do need some level of prior experience shooting

    • @joe_tographer
      @joe_tographer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree that it's probably not the best camera for learning settings, but this video is more focused on the end product: the idea that you don't need to have certain specs to take great photos.
      At the end of the day, shooting as often as possible and training your eye is the fastest way to success in street photography. Without that, mastering all the techniques in the world won't help. And a pocketable camera is the best way to do that in my opinion 🤷
      Thanks for watching

      @@joe_tographer I love the old CCD censors, I shoot the XF1 and the Olympus xz-1 when I'm too lazy for a big boy mirrorless but their limitations are felt very rapidly which is why I'd recommend a cheapo mirrorless like the fuji xm1 or an older Sony/Canon with vintage lenses for a more substantial learning exp

    Umm it's a ok camera but don't hold up to a Fuji or gr lens the x100 is too expensive but you can grab a x70 for a few hundred now.

      X70's go for $500+ used, the difference in quality is not worth $400 dollars imo
