- How can you make your modeler sound more like a real amp?
In this video, we take a look at our new XR [extreme realism] Impulse Response Collection and compare them to stock cabs on every major modeler platform to demonstrate how using our XR IRs is the easiest and most effective way to improve your tone and make your modeler/amp sim sound more like a real amp.
We breakdown what is included in each IR pack, give sound examples, compare our XR IRs with a real mic’d cab, answer frequently asked IR questions, compare the XR IRs to our previous tone-matched IRs, and hop on a call with our friend Chris Greely [mix engineer, producer, guitarist] to talk about these new XR IRs.Buckle up, let’s go to tone town!
These IRs deliver the truest representation of a cab in tone, feel, breakup quality, and harmonic information when pushed. Our new XR IR Collection is the result of countless hours of IR experimentation, development, and A/B testing. They are the most accurate line of impulse responses that we have ever created. These IRs are universal and can be used on any platform that can load IRs. Check out the XR IR Collection:

Even listening to this audio on studio-quality headphones and nearfields, it doesn’t do justice to the difference between the XR IR’s and comparable traditional IR’s - even the Ownhammer Rock Box sounds beam-y and narrow in comparison. And TwoNotes and Celestion dynamic IR’s are now officially outdated compared to XR’s. Bravo guys, don’t know how you did it but these finally unlocked my in-the-box digital sounds and made them actually fun to play.
Wow, thanks for the feedback and for checking them out! We are stoked you hear what we hear 🤘🏼
@@Tone_Factor I know you’re not going to give away proprietary information, but I’m struggling to figure out how you did this. The XRIR’s make all my other IR’s sound like am radios, but it can’t be just good eq’ing. You don’t mention any similarities to TwoNotes or Celestion dynamic IR technology yet there must be some dynamic component, yet there can’t be because they’re straight wav files. These also beat the UA Ox sounds handily.
Thank you for working so hard to produce a sound that can be matched with a real amp. Even though it's not 100%, I can't tell a difference... This saves my back and a ton of weight to carrying my rig around. Thank you so much for the countless hours I bet it took to make these.
It's honestly insane how amp like those XR IRs sound and feel. So inspiring
Biased 😆
Can’t wait to watch all this! You guys just keep leveling up the industry
Thanks! That is the goal!
That's amazing guys! Thank you for you effort during these years to make our tones better! Thank you Chris for a clear clarification as well! You guys rock! 🤘🏾
Cheers!
Just bought these and I have to say that these are the best sounding IR’s I’ve tried
The feel on these are amazing.
Props to the amazing work and thank you!
Let's go! Thanks for the support and for checking them out! Tell your friends the good news!📢
These are pretty amazing. I thought my stock Cab setting was good, but oh my! Question, was is your favorite mic setting or blend included in the pack (Chimera)?
I'm speechless! What a tone I have now with these XR IR's - awesome job guys!!
Thanks for the feedback and for checking them out! 🫡🔥
Thank, guys! Just watched the video and can’t wait to try them on my podgo. What a truly exhaustive dedication to a labor of love on your behalf! Must have been tough… Thanks again!
Thanks for watching! Yes, lots of work but also lots of fun!
Great job on these guys. I’m amazed at how much grit and character they add whereas my others sound much soother and small in comparison. These sound huge! Definitely looking forward to those 4x12’s.
Yessir! Thanks for the feedback. Epic 4x12s coming soon!
Two 4x12’s are live (and more to come!): www.tonefactor.co/impulse-responses
Threw these in my iridiums and they've never felt better. Awesome job with these 👏🏻
Thanks Sam - Your video sounded great!
Thanks so much! 🤘🏻
Thanks for all the hard work you guys have put in! Even this video alone must've taken so long. Really appreciate your time and effort. These new IRs sound great. I'm definitely going to try straight swapping the tone match IRs on my hx stomp to them!
Thanks Jesse! Yes, it took a lot of time but totally worth it to properly show off these new XR IRs (which we spent wayyyy more time working on developing).
I am doing a livestream of a few ambient guitar things just for me and your IRs really made a huge difference to my clean sounds. I bought the Orange and Marshall IRs to test, but even with only the starter selection this makes a huge difference to my clean sounds after only the five minutes I am playing with them right now. I will surely test in other settings, but this is great, Thanks! I will definitely want more.
Thanks a ton for checking them out and for the feedback! Glad you dig them!
Playing through in ears on a no-noise stage setup has been inspiring again with these IRs. Feel so real and somehow captures the feeling of an amp being next to you. Really really love these!
Thanks for the feedback! We are stoked you dig them!
Excellent content! Looking forward to adding these IR's to my collection.
Thanks for watching!
I'm excited to try this. The thing Chris said about the B3 really makes sense
On the shootout, I noticed ever so slightly, a bit more clarity in the low end. But the fact you guys got it THAT CLOSE, is insane.
Sounds fantastic! Hope to see the QC IRs on cloud soon!
The A/B test sounded so close I don't think the common person in the crowd would be able to discern any difference in the mix. Well done. I'll have to pick some of these up.
I got the greenbacks, pretty happy I was able to remove the cab block from my stomp and go back to Iridium IR. Tested last night at mid week service and it was a success
Thanks for checking them out!

I upgraded to 2.0 on the ACS1 and could not believe how much better it sounds. That inspired me to try the Benson Chimera 2x12 Pack and it is just fantastic, of course I haven't tried all the combinations but I haven't found one that I don't like. Most likely I will be purchasing some more packs.
Glad you like it!
Raising the bar again. Well done guys!

These sound great! I just bought 3 of the kits --> 71 MARSH G12M GREENBACK 4x12A - XR -- '66 PRINCETON REVERB 1x10 - XR IR PACK and '66 DELUXE REVERB 1x12 - XR IR PACK - can't wait to give 'em a go! Nice work guys.
Thanks for checking them out 👊🏻
wow its crazy I ran it through some math rock mixes I did last month the space they create is so 3d, and you can really push the eq on these too. Great work gentlemen
Let’s go 🔥Thanks for the feedback and in checking them out! 🫡 If you haven’t watched the call with Chris in this video, check that out! More great feedback on these XR IRs and IRs in general from an incredible engineer.
Such an amazing tone! Checking your thoughts on how it will sound if used on a line 6 powercab and/or mission engineering’s gemini?
Big big thank you for the the amazing microphone selection! R121 and M160 are essential for guitars, and the newer Soyuz is just a beast!
Yessir! Glad you dig it!
25 min I hear the xr and hear a sound I can shape with a few eq cuts like a real cab. But the modellers I feel I’ll need to boost things a lot to get it to where it needs to be. Really cool guys going to give a few a go
Right on! Be sure to check out the Call with Chris in this video where he points out some of those similar problems with modelers and other IRs. Cheers ⚡️
Really excited to try these
We are exited for you to try them too!
I finally sat down today and tried out the IR’s and at first I panicked cause I didn’t like the 57 mic at all with my rig and my stock IR I’ve been using sounded better no matter what. Then I remembered wait there’s more mics and the Soyez blew me away. Worth every penny. 😂
The 017 Tube is an excellent mic! Thanks for checking out the XR IRs - glad you dig them!
What’s best practice for choosing Amp models to suit the IRs?
Eg. What amp to choose for the Benson Chimera on a QC (which doesn’t have a Benson model)
Gran trabajo muchachos!!!
Sounds great! I really want to try out the Greenback XR IRs with my Matchless preset on Helix
I primarily used Matchless, Plexi and Princeton amps on the Helix….Which XR IR would pair best with these?? Please suggest.
I’ve always felt this, modellers lack the low end ‘air’ coming from the amp- you guys have managed to capture that beautifully. Bravo lads.
Purchased the jbl e 130 used the vibrato verb on the fractal nailed Stevie’s early tone it’s so close it’s scary they sound so real!!!! Amazing !
I had the ACS1, but it just didn’t have the gain on tap with the first firmware. Went to the Dream/Ruby combo and now I’m wondering if I should go back and pocket the extra cash by going back to the ACS1 !?
I heard it right away for the A/B, bass response is something modeling (for me anyway) still struggles a bit with. I can hear B has a tighter bass response like it gives what you work for. I don't know how to explain it but anyway thanks guys! These IRs truly are amazing. I bought nearly all of them and they saved my QC. Now I am just waiting for a DI amp bundle for the platforms :) Would love to try your own AC30 and Benson with different cabs. Cheers!
Love to hear that! Honestly, running the XR IRs on the QC was the first time we were enjoying the Cortex. We will be experimenting with DI amp captures and running these XR IRs soon as just capting a full amp with the QC didn't sound that great and had all the problems of the stock cabs. The XR IR is the way to go for the QC.
@@Tone_Factor Do all the IRs work on the QC? I noticed on your site there aren't any IRs explicitly listed under the QC page.
Hey! I’m a Kemper user and I’m wondering if there’s a point in using IRs on Kemper? Will it actually make such a huge difference as on other devices?
Right now I’m using almost only Kenyon’s JMI profiles, would you recommend some specific IRs to add to these profiles? Thank you!
Hello. Was there an effort to volume match the examples of the "Stock Cabinets" versus your XR IRs? I have listened on several playback systems, and the XRs were noticeably louder. It did not make for a fair comparison. Thanks!
I love the faces when the first comparison starts hahaha. That difference is insane
It's hard not to react lol
Sounds great guys! Need one for the DC30!
On the to-do list!
Just bought the ac30 GB XR IR, the clarity is incredible! 🔥 Unfortunately the QC doesn’t have a chimera model yet 😞
Not gunna lie, those IRs sound crazy amazing!
Hearing is believing
These are killer. Im now very curious to hear how these stack up against the new ua ox pedal. Seems like they are both really high quality and authentic feeling.
I’ve been really successful running KENYON REED’s signature patch mixed with my own adjustments to maximize the pod go! And loving it. Want to try some of these out but only want to spend 20 right now…. Which one would you suggest???
I’m guessing the JMI 30/6?
I have been really successful with snap shot 1 being a huge swell no amp/cab
2 having one perfect thick clean tone
Using stomp box mode to turn off effects if not needed
3 more of a edge of breakup for my dryer rhythm tone
And 4 big lead tone with all effects in.
Is there any specific IR I should try?
The JMI 30/6 XR IR pack would definitely be the recommended choice for that since that preset is already dialed around that amp and Kenyon's tone!
Be sure to check out all of the video timestamps in the info section - lots of great stuff in this video and we definitely recommend watching it all!
Hello TF, i’m an iridium user and mainly using the punch setting. i’ve got a prs se custom 24 with suhr thornbucker. any marshall xr ir would you recommend as well as the position. thank you very much for the help!
If you were going to recommend a Quad cortex model to use w the Benson IR, what would you recommend?
Are guitars used when creating IR's? Or maybe I should ask, What signal is sent though the original speaker to create the "impluse" response?
the new IRs sound amazing!! suppose I have my tone dialled in, and then want to sweeten in further with some EQ in my DAW, can I drop the IR wav file into the DAW, load the EQ and then re-bounce the wav to bake that EQ into the IR, or is that likely to compromise the IR's response?
No harm in trying that, just save both the old/new files in DAW. I like to bake plugins into a new bounce on a track, saves processing power for other tracks
if i were to use two amps on the helix instead of one like you guys did, what would that do?
I literally cannot believe your IRs could get better! Unbelievable job guys
Thanks! We are here to keep pushing the digital world of guitar tone forward ⚡
Looks like the stock cab and your IRs are recorded using different distances from the cone. So even if you shoot both at the cap edge you get a different sound.
Have you got any info on this aspect?
If im using an iridium or ACS1, What amp emulation should I be using for the Benson ir?
Excellent work! Planning to pick up a few of these. Are you guys also planning to add any 4x12 cabs and/or more aggressive speakers like the v30?
Thanks! Absolutely! Lots of 4x12’s in the cue coming soon!
Two 4x12 packs are live - V30 included! (more to come!): www.tonefactor.co/impulse-responses
Sorry for noob question, I’ve only had a Kemper and never messed with IRs…. I’m thinking about buying a fractal and I would for sure buy your XR IRs. I mainly like two rock/dumble tones, but I notice you don’t have any XR IRs for dumbles. Do I just buy a few IRs and hope they sound okay with the fractal dumble amp model? Is it okay to mix and match different amp\cab combinations?
I definitely noticed a slight difference when comparing the XR IR to the real amp, with the IR sounded cleaner and more focused and the amp having more air to it and more variation (maybe harmonics) based on pick attack. What would you guys recommend for getting an amp in the room feel? I’m currently using the Line 6 power cab on the flat setting and pretty happy with it so far…
A very subtle room reverb. Even compression does it. When I used the Strymon Iridium the room knob made all the difference in realistic amp feel and fake.
The XR Collection is definitely better, however I will say that I did think that the Helix Stock Cabs sounded way better than the QC Stock Cabs. I run a massive board with the Helix floor as the brains of the entire rig and I do run IR's because they definitely still make a massive difference. I'll be checking out some of these XR IR's for sure!
Yeah I agree, the Helix stock cab wasn't as bad as the QC stock cab sounded. Which is surprising.
I use the pre-tone factor DH bethel patch for 90% of what I play - is it worth switching out the IRs for these new ones and would I need to do anything else to reconfigure my patches??
You should be able to throw them in and tweak! Might have to raise the top end on your EQ blocks since the actual harmonics are replacing that harsh fizzy sound in modelers that we all know and hate 🤣 it’s been a while since I’ve owned a helix so I haven’t ran that patch in a while. Best of luck, hope this helps!
@tone_factor are you building pedalboard platforms around the XR or are we just supposed to drop them in to the existing stuff we already have from you? I have a helix
Moving foward, we will be building our presets from our XR IRs. The beauty of these universal XR IRs is you can buy a pack and use it on ANY platform with ANY amp and ANY amp settings, unlike tone matched IRs that have to be paired with the amp, settings, and platform they were tone matched to to sound correct.
Are there any samples we can download to test them side by side? I would love to hear the single Greenback 3 IR you are using as a demo. Videos sound phenomenal, I would like to listen to them on this side.
Yo! I'm hoping to drop these into Helix presets that I got from y'all - which IR's would you recommend I use for those?
Is the TC Electronic Impulse IR Loader little pedal good enough to handle those XR IRs ?
Thanks guys. I really appreciated hearing at 1:01:32 the sound of the different cabs and speakers you have in your shop as well. But I also noticed that you have some new ones, like the "'64 SRV VIBROVERB" of which I have no sound samples. This makes it difficult for me to choose which one to buy. Are there sound samples of all of them that I am missing?
Thanks for watching!
We recently added that XR IR pack (and others) since this video was made and will continue to add more. We want to have demos of everything but are currently both in tour for the next month or two, but the goal is to have audio demos of all the packs on the product pages 👍🏻
Nice comparison, spite would be nice to even both signals with dB meter to the same level, because yours are all louder than original ones. Else, nice work.
Ok, I’ll be honest. I’ve always thought IRs were stupid and thought, “why would anyone use IRs? The stock cabs are just fine, no one can tell a difference”. I have a QC and have been happy with the stock cabs. However I saw everyone raving about these XR IRs, so I thought I’d finally give it a try.
It’s not a life-changing difference, but it’s pretty close to being that. It made my QC come alive in a way I didn’t know it needed. Best IRs I’ve tried hands down!
We love to hear that! 🙌Thanks for checking them out and taking the time to give your feedback!
9:10 I noticed this same thing with neural’s plugins where the fidelity overall is low quality. These XR IRs sound sweet!

Thanks! The are a big step up from our previously released tone-matched IRs. Check out the comparison in the video here: 1:19:57
Have y’all looked into the UA Ruby? I like the pedal and just wonder if that’s a possibility in the future
Totally great 🔥😍🔥
So with your DH Bethel patch for Helix, I will want both the XR IRs for the AC30 Green and the Prosonic?
Yes if you are wanting the XR IR versions.
Shower thoughts: Would it be possible to find the exact eq curve of a microphone, and apply the inverse of that curve to the IR file to essentially eliminate the mic flavor and get the sound of just the speaker?
In theory yes, or you can find a pretty flat condenser mic to do your recordings to eliminate classic mic characteristic (eq) as much as possible (It won't be supper flat but you can live with it). Some mic manufacturers provide the frequency response of their mics on the internet which you can use to put an EQ to do micro adjustments to make it flatter. Remember those measurements are from 1m distance at a certain db. However, there are a lot of other parameters in place such as the room that your amp is in. So hearing just the cab is not what you want, it is the sound in that room that you are after, and that requires some experiments and different mic set-up and capturing techniques.
Do you guys offer any cleaner sounding amps for a more 80s tone or the 1975 tone like a JC or the cleaner side of a morgan?
Would you say these IR’s combined with say, a Fractal amp model, sounds and feels better than the best Kemper/QC/ToneX full rig capture?
Hey guys, love the greenback packs! Will there be any Jensen or Oxford packs in the future for Fender Blonde era enthusiasts?
Absolutely! Lots in the works from our collection.
Hi how do you find using these with tonex di captures compared to tonex complete rig capture?
Will there be any 4x12 cabs it’s coming?
That is something we need to test still to see if we prefer DI amp captures with XR IRs vs our full rig ToneX captures (which sound awesome - tonex is by far the best at capturing a mic'd amp vs kemper or QC). 4x12s coming SOON!
@@Tone_Factor Thanks for the honest reply, that’s something you don’t often get from someone selling their products!
These look good for modellers and building your own tones so I see the value.
Are there any sample packs?
Guys these sound unreal. Congrats on a job well done! Please do a Matchless 2x12 pack and I'll be the first to buy it 🙌🏼
Thanks! In the cue, stay tuned!
@@Tone_Factor yesss can't wait! Just picked up a bunch of existing packs in the meantime. Oh, and a 5e3 Tweed Deluxe pack would be incredible as well!
@@micahjones3562also in the cue! We have a ‘59 5E3
Sounds great.
@Tone Factor - can this be used with Kempers? I know you have IRs specific for kempers. What is the difference?
Yes, all of our XR IRs are compatible with Kempers and sound great on them! Our Kemper page has our Kemper profile packs (full rig captures). Both are great on kemper.
Good stuff, guys. Everything sounds great overall. I'm a fan.
+2 points to Fractal, though for sounding really good with the stock cab. Could've used a tweak or two but overall, I think Fractal brings the most amp-like tones out of the box compared to these others.
Fractal is by far the best one I've used, and it's not even close
@@JGorg8and also is it very good low end and punchy?
How do you think these hold up to your ToneX captures?
Just. bought the AC30 2x12 Blue and loaded into my Iridium. Sounds way better than the stock IRs but still on the fence if its better than York Audio's 2x12 Blue. So far the York Audio still wins...Let's see how it goes after a few gigs
Are these better than the dyna cabs with fractal stuff?
If you've purchased Tone Matched amp packs in the past, will these eventually be upgraded to the XR IRs or is it expected that XR IRs are to be purchased separately and added into patches?
Good question! Buying the XR IR packs is a great option to update any presets you have. All future Tone Factor presets will be based of these XR IRs since they are a big improvement from our tone matched IRs. We will likely be rebuilding/redialing our currently released presets using these new XR IRs since they sound so much better. Because of the massive amount of time that will take and for the fact that they include new IRs, they will be entirely new versions for sale. As always, if any of our current presets break or need a correction to function and sound as initially designed, those will always be free updates.
When I load up one of the IR’s into my Pod Go software, is the name supposed to look like "TF4EE4?1"? Or is that a typo and not working? Thank you!
I’m having the same thing in HX Edit with my Helix floor model. Did you figure out if it’s supposed to look like that?
@Tone_Factor When will these XR IR’s be sold within a comprehensive setup? Are you guys looking to integrate these into a new “bethel presets”. I have a helix floor and have the current David Hislop Bethel patch. I know you mentioned that I can plug the new XR IR’s into the old patches but I didn’t know if you guys were planning to integrate and fine tune these into new “full setup” patches like before?
All of our new presets will be built off of these XR IRs since they are such a level up from tone matched and our original DH IRs. Not sure how soon that will happen through - we are going to be working on more XR IR packs (4x12’s, etc).
I purchased some of your ir packs.
Which ones are good for quad cortex? The 44.1, 48 or 96 khz ?
Thank you
Thanks for checking them out! Use 96khz for the Cortex.
Will you be doing a new full Bethel board preset with some of these new XR IRs? Or can we just plug them into it as updated IRs?
Most likely both! But not sure when I will get to a new preset build. You can absolutely buy a pack and load them in any presets you wish. The beauty of these universal XR IRs is you can buy a pack and use it on ANY platform with ANY amp and ANY amp settings, unlike tone matched IRs that have to be paired with the amp, settings, and platform they were tone matched to to sound correct.
These sound nuts! Amazing. I’m currently using a QC by itself. Do you think I’d benefit by swapping in AC30 + Prosonic IRs? Will I run into phase issues?
We think the XR IRs take the QC to the next level! All of the IRs are in polarity and phase aligned with each other, so you can absolutely run a stereo rig.
@@Tone_Factorsweet! I’m gonna sub them into my current patches!
Are you planning to add Matchless DC-30 to XR IR Collection or should I buy the existing Tone Match preset? Honestly I would prefere to potentially wait and get my hands on the new Irs cause they sound AWSOME! Let me know please, cheers!
We will definitely be doing a DC30 XR IR Pack at some point!
Wish you guys have more demoes with your new XR IR packs. I wanna hear the comparisons from real amp to XR IR.
We do that in this video: 35:47 - Real Amp Shootout: Rundown
@@Tone_Factor Oh I meant with the new releases or the other amps of your XR IRs. Like the 66 Deluxe Reverb. Would love to hear demos to each IR.
Are you planning to update your Artist Presets (specifically the DH ones) with XR IRs in the near future? Just don't want to double-buy the IRs and presets if they're going to be added in a future version of the Artist Presets. Also can't wait for the DC-30 ones!
All future presets of ours will be built off of our new XR IRs and we will also be replacing any previous TF tone matched presets with new XR IR versions that will be redialed to the new XR IRs and sold as new presets. That’s a big workload so will take some time…it could be months before we get down that road as we are focusing on continuing to build out our XR IR Collection while we are on and off the road on tours for the rest of the year.
Sounds awesome!😉👍bit off topic but are the pick ups in the jazz master stock?
Thanks for watching! Those pickups are Fralin Modern PAFs!
trying to decide which ones to buy. what do you guys like best for high gain modern metal, crunch tones, and cleans?
Both the Orange V30 4x12 and Marshall G12T75 are killer! Some of the 2x12s gain handle high gain nicely as shown in the video, but the 4x12s do have that extra 4x12 lowend punch.
I have the ACS1. So that mean the update includes the XR IR?
I want to try these ir s in the old Studio Devil Amp modeler pro VST for fun ! ❤
