- Hey everyone, I am very excited to be getting into woodworking and as such its tool time! I love getting new tools. Who doesnt?
I purchased the brand new Kobalt XTR 5 tool kit.
I decided to make an unboxing video so you can see what comes inside and how it's packaged.
I have used them all since I filmed this and have been and have been very impressed with them. They are very solid tools and have been able to do quite a lot with them. The blade that comes with the circular saw cut very cleanly and I love that it has an electronic brake. The light came in very handy installing light switches. Reciprocating saw did very well. and of course the drill and driver have gotten heavy usage around the house and have not let me down once.

Had two damaged cases before I got one that wasn’t beat to hell in some fashion. The tools though are pretty awesome and seem built really solid so far! Enjoy yours!
Too bad about the damaged cases. When i seem them at my local lowes they seem ok.
Thanks. I do use them and they have been very useful. The light is so underrated too. Been a life savor a few times. With the drill was a little quieter though. It scares my dog when I use it inside lol
I have the older Kobalt 6 kit with soft roll around box, I like it better than any of the hard plastic pack out systems because it has slots for every tool, they don’t bang against each other during transport. And the side pockets on them allow more storage of drill bits and drivers. IMO the soft bag is way better. Only advantage of the hard pack out box is they look expensive and you can stand on them.
Honestly, I havent used the big box for anything but taking up space and storing a vice. I'd almost prefer to be able to buy without anything. But as this is a starter kit I suppose it is understandable.
Super tempted to get this wish it included a grinder
I have been happy so far with it. A grinder would be nice. Also that shop light has been very helpful at times.
The hammer drill has anti kickback protection. A feature not present at this price range. This is an incredible value.
I haven't used the hammer feature much but that is a great tip!

How long did it take you to find it in stock? I’ve been checking website over a month and always out of stock near me, and won’t let me order online.
It took me a while to find it. I never actually saw it available online but one day noticed it was in stock at my local store. But it wasnt actually put out in a proper location and didn't have the price. I noticed a brown shipping box on the floor which has two of the kits in it. IIRC it was just had some small wording on the box and was not obvious to what was inside. I had to ask an employee to open it for me.

I've been trying to get this kit for 3 months. Finally got it yesterday in Topeka. I searched on Lowes website and was about to order from Omaha store and pay $55 shipping, then it came in stock nearby. The $55 shipping would have been worth it.
I would have gladly paid 50 bucks more if the shipping tray the tools were shipped in was made of heavier material , with a cover and handle so you could put the tools back in and slide it back into the box ! I just hate throwing the tools back into the chest !!!
Do you store these in the case or somewhere else in your (beautiful) workshop? The tray that holds most of the tools vertical in the toolbox is awkward. I just got my set two days ago and wondered how most people would store theirs.
I actually have them hanging on my pegboard. Had to get a bit creative with some of the hooks because the reciprocating saw, for example,, has no provisions for hanging. Basically a couple of the long, pegboard arms in different heights was able to do it. I might change it a little bit later though
I thought the same thing and just ended up throwing that vertical tray away and laying them back in the box, which actually makes more room for more Kobalt tools! LOL 😆
Would be nice if the design incorporated a second horizontal tray or something 🤷🏻♂️.
I’m undecided to but this or not I’m in Milwaukee and ridgid platform but I got the other kit for $199 last holidays is it worth the upgrade
I don't have much experience with those platforms but I've been happy with the tools so far. Kobalt is expanding their lineup which is good to see. Really depends on what tools you need and see if they have it in their lineup.
When the drill is on speed 2 when you pull the trigger and let it go does the drill make a loud bang or click sound?
Sorry for the late response I just saw this. It makes a click but I wouldn't consider it loud. Actually the motor itself is louder than the click. Tbh, my biggest gripe about it is how loud the motor is. It seems excessive. I have a cheaper black and decker drill that is smaller and not as strong but much quieter and I almost prefer it for a lot of inside jobs around the house

I also have the same XTR set. You can’t get any better for the price. I love my blue’s.

@@zalienthere-visitor1424 Ive gotten even more since then. The blue is frankly what sold me. Favorite color for sure. My whole pegboard organization system is blue
