The Ghana Empire, not to be confused with the modern country of Ghana, was a powerful and wealthy West African kingdom that existed from approximately the 4th to the 13th century CE. It was situated in the region that includes parts of present-day Mauritania and Mali. The empire was renowned for its vast resources of gold, which were obtained through trade with Arab merchants, and this trade network extended to the Mediterranean.
The capital city of the Ghana Empire was Kumbi Saleh, which was a significant trading hub. The empire's wealth was largely derived from the control and taxation of trade routes, particularly those transporting gold and salt. It was also known for its well-organized political structure, with a powerful king (the Ghana) at the helm.
Over time, the empire declined due to various factors, including internal strife, invasions, and the shifting of trade routes. It eventually gave way to the emergence of other West African states and empires, but it left a lasting legacy in the history of the region.

The history of Ghana is amazing, it's too bad they just gave their gold away for salt... imagined the wealth.
