I literally just finished watching your other videos to hear you say youll make an FJ video, then immediately after recieved the notification for the FJ video. You make videos like a god, keep it up my guy.
Check the Throttle body and Mass Air Flow sensor if you never cleaned it. It will help with starting and run better too. I have a v6 Tacoma with the same engine and checked mine after was doing donuts on some off road trails. Also for the oil filter you can buy a 3' hose and put it on the nipple under the little oil filter overflow catch and drain it into a bottle or the pan you drained the oil in, so you wont drip oil all over your engine, belts, frame.
A tip if you have an oil filter that's facing down, punch a hole in the top of the oil filter at the start of the serviced, lets the oil drain and makes way less mess.
One handy tip is to use an airline to blow out any dust, grime and debris before removing the spark plugs as it minimises the risks of stuff getting either into the cylinder or on the plug threads which will make them harder to remove next time.
Cleaning your maf sensor is also a great thing if never done in 150k mi./ cleaning throttle body and relearn idle setting is also good if there is a small build up of dust/pcv vapor near throttle body. Cleans up idle if slightly bogging idle is noticed
im a "professional" oil pig, and we use a little brake cleaner on a rag to help twist off stubborn filters. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt, but i usually like to try this method before reaching for a filter wrench.
As was already mentioned, the screwdriver trick can get you into more trouble. As the metal skin and interior of the filter is so thin, you could easily destroy the body while the threaded area remains stuck. Now you can't drive to the store to get a proper oil filter wrench -- unless you're lucky enough to have a spare Evora collecting mold out on the street :)~
Tip for getting rid of wind noise from light bars, put them into a wind deflector. I had one on my 4th gen 4Runner and had to pop the sunroof open to narrow the wind gap between my roof and bottom of the bar. And it also toned the noise down.
Have fun sanding and painting that grill AGAIN in about 6 months time. Using rattle can black on a plastic trim piece WITHOUT a plastic adhesion promoting primer is a bad idea... Also I thought most fuel system additives should be added just before filling up or at least part filling your fuel tank so that the additive actually gets mixed around in your tank... Still love the build but don't let a busy schedule make you start taking shortcuts.
petem8 I mean, for all we know he did run around the corner and fill up on fuel, or had a Jerry can. He knows what he is doing, why are mechanics so forceful in commenting on every little detail. If he wants help, he openly asks for it in the video.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a hard to find truck. Treasure it if you have one. And Chris, PLEASE, and very soon, PLEASE put a ring on Chelsea's finger and make it official. Y'all are perfect together.
If the oil filter isnt coming off by hand, I'd suggest putting a low grit sand paper in your hand. Works wonders for getting traction on a hard to grip filter.
When I did the first oil change on my FJ, I tried using an oil filter wrench and it just crushed and twisted the outer shell of the filter. I thought the last owner just overtightened it. I made sure to not overtighten the new filter, but the same thing happened when it needed to be changed again. Had to do the screwdriver through the filter on every change.
This was dropped on it's side at some point right? That might explain the super dirty plugs on one side, they would have been soaked in oil and then that oil would burn into carbon when it started again. Also, painting aluminium, like that grill surround, use an etch primer, otherwise it will just chip and peal again.
I would advise disconnecting the battery at the negative terminal before messing with the coil packs. You’re probably fine, but why take the risk of shorting something out?
Put a niece of pipe through the centre bores of the wheels and on either end of the pipe have a hole for a ratchet strap or metal clamp. This would work for two or more wheels and if you’re just transporting one wheel it can lay flat. Ratchet strap is a good option but with a metal rod through the middle it’ll make the load more secure/ be less likely to wriggle free
I had the same light at you had with terrible wind noise, switching to a 50 inch bar and mounting it closer to the windshield eliminated the wind noise.
I had about 4 days worth of pork ribs today. That was amazing. Then I had tiramisu, along with a load of coffee. WOW I'M BOTH STUFFED LIKE A TURKEY AND BUZZING FROM CAFFEINE! HOLY CRAP!
I’m a tech at a Toyota dealership. The spark plugs usually come out like that. Toyota recommends replacing them every 120k miles. (I agree that’s way too long) so the plugs usually are a bit tough to remove
Don’t know if you saw my last comment regarding the M5 bumper, but pouring boiling water (carefully obviously) over the plastic cover can sometimes cause it to pop back into its original position. Might be worth trying before you go buy a new one.
B is for Build for shits and goggles. Giver ago anyway and see how close to perfect it can get, what's it gonna take 10 min of your time? Would be cool to see regardless.
Key thing is, the car is for Chelsea, as he said when he put the car back together he wants the thing perfect for her, also the insurance paid for it so it's not coming out his pocket ;)
When I worked at a part store I use to sell people Subaru drain plugs because they have a groove cut for a o-ring. Simple swap, never have to replace it again (unless you screw up the o-ring)
I don't do that screw driver trick anymore. Once I twisted off the back and had to pull the radiator to get access with a hammer to chisel it out. Get the rachet head!
On the Evora air conditioning (since it's been empty for so long and comments were disabled on the relevant video): You may know this, so this is just in case: use a vacuum pump to get it to the proper vacuum rating (-23 if I remember correctly), then fill it... videos are around about how to do that. Afterwards, just make sure the compressor isn't dragging on the drive belt when it activates, because that will indicate a broken compressor (it happens when moisture from the atmosphere wrecks the internals). Here's hoping for the best.
Beother!!! Like the break on the builds but you really need a pickup truck and trailer to haul, move your your parts and car to the track / wherever you need to take them, I recently got a trailer and best investment ever
Hey Chris, why don’t you just get a trailer for your hauling needs? I own a 2012 FJ and can speak from experience that using the OEM roof rack to haul anything is essentially an invitation to be pulled over by any and all law enforcement and given the root act for being a responsible motorist. Just food for thought. Love the paint job - wish I had the time to do that to mine. Love the channel!
Yeah I worked on a Hilux that had either the same engine or at least very similar, one of the easiest filter changes ever. The downward facing leaves the filter empty so you get little to no spillage when removing it, and there's even a housing around it with a small drain hole in it so any possible spillage is easily caught and cleaned. The only other car I've worked on that was this easy is my Rx-7 as it also has a downward facing oil filter.
not on all of them - i have a 2010, and its completely different. it's a cartridge style filter, mounted still in front of the engine, but down very low, in the center. you have to remove a skid plate to access it.
You're killing it man! Can't wait to see the Evora all fixed up 👌 I don't mind this break to do a little maintenance & gambler, I'd hate to see you get burnt out grinding on the Z
4 the oil filter take a bicycle chain, cut a part of the chain, 2 handels so u can wrap and grip on the filter and that's it.i'm a bike mec and thats what we use
If your FJ had Denso plugs on one side and NGKs on the other then they are likely the original ones. Toyota used two different brands from the factory for some random reason. I don't think anybody does it when they put replacements in.
In the 2012 fj the oil filter is located under its own like mini skidplate which is located up and under the actual skid plate. Sucks having to change the filter out
That service was spot on. You'll notice a difference straight away with fresh oil, filters and plugs. Does the FJ use a fuel filter or is it incorporated into an in-tank pump? I swear by NGK plugs myself. I also swear by BG fuel additives. BG44K for petrol (gas) and BG244 for diesel.
Screwdriver trick looks like an easy way to mess up the threads. For any Toyota owners, I highly recommend OEM filter and drain plug gaskets, cheaper and better than aftermarket.
First off just want to say LOVE the channel! I do projects on my car on weekends and I'm always getting great ideas from you. Two suggestions. Would love to buy some classic BIFB tshirts when in stock but would be cool if you had white with grey lettering. And I work at GM Racing and it would be cool to see you do a bad ass American build, Vette, Camaro, CTS, ect. I'm not a comment guy but had to do it on my favorite channel. Keep up the great work!
Yea it was out of hand. If people don’t like something then don’t watch. It’s pretty simple. No need to blow up comments. Keep on going Chris. Been here since the first brz
I hope you gapped the spark plugs to spec! Also to address other comments: 10k miles is probably pushing it in my opinion for an oil change. I used to change my oil every 3k or 4k miles but only started noticing enough difference when I started changing oil around 6k miles. I use Castrol Magnatec fully synthetic.
This is an older video, as stated in the previous video. Note that even the roof of the M5 is still white, and he painted it black quite a long time ago. :-)
Fun fact to tell if a Toyota has the original spark plugs: if the top of the plug has something stamped on it (like a yellow triangle) they are the original plugs.
You forgot to mention on top of rubbing the oil filter seal you should also put oil in the filter so it's not dry when you start it up and gets oil to the engine instantly instead of filling the oil filter then to the engine I do see that it could be a problem with your application since it is on the top of the engine
Can’t you just put one of those roof straps through the wheels between the spokes? That seems like a really sturdy solution for at least not having the wheels fly off. Love this truck!
Props to you for disabling the comments on the evora video. People are getting out of control these days. Give them a say, n they feel they can run your life. If every subscriber gave you $1, you'd have a great storage place. Put up, or, shut up folks.
Been here since your first BRZ. Anyone else?
yeee buddyyy
Yess
ayee
Hell yeah, I joined when he had that fusebox issue making the brz not start
Yep! Remember all the paint jobs he went through back then? Haha
That’s a good way to tighten the new oil filter also
I'm liking the look back at your builds and the honesty about what wasn't done properly. You're learning, we're learning. B is for Better every day.
I literally just finished watching your other videos to hear you say youll make an FJ video, then immediately after recieved the notification for the FJ video.

Disconnect the battery for a minute then reconnect to reset the ecu learning patterns. It will relearn now based on how it currently is running
As was already mentioned, the screwdriver trick can get you into more trouble. dito to that brother

That smile I get everytime you upload a video and my notification goes off
YTvirus Haha me too
The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a hard to find truck. Treasure it if you have one. And Chris, PLEASE, and very soon, PLEASE put a ring on Chelsea's finger and make it official. Y'all are perfect together.
From the thumbnail I though you put a light bar on the hood 💀😂😂
king jimmy I did too. Lmao!
Dave Cardona 😂😂🤣
He could install one on the front bumper
Same

You should do a transmission drain and fill on the fj. Not many people know how to do the sealed transmission services
I really like episodes where u return to your older builds! Nice video!
Chelsea looks like the red head teacher from the movie FIST FIGHT 😂😂
Also a little bit like Bryce Dallas Howard
Ms Monet?
Chawn Hampton, what really makes that funny is that she's a teacher.
One of my favorite builds of all time to date
This was dropped on it's side at some point right? That might explain the super dirty plugs on one side, they would have been soaked in oil and then that oil would burn into carbon when it started again.
Also, painting aluminium, like that grill surround, use an etch primer, otherwise it will just chip and peal again.
This is the greatest TH-cam channel ever I refer it to everyone
Great tune up video!! Much love to the FJ!
Love the underneath of the hood half blue half black!! All jokes aside great video
Spray fins on back of light bars with flex seal or similar stuff. Cuts down on the whistling substantially.
If you put some foam insulation or door jam rubber between the fins on the lightbars the wind noise subside a ton.
Hey I recommend u check ur transfer case and diff oils as part of ur service.
I would advise disconnecting the battery at the negative terminal before messing with the coil packs. You’re probably fine, but why take the risk of shorting something out?

The one car that looks better dirty is cleaner than I've seen any of your others!
I had about 4 days worth of pork ribs today. That was amazing. Then I had tiramisu, along with a load of coffee.
WOW I'M BOTH STUFFED LIKE A TURKEY AND BUZZING FROM CAFFEINE! HOLY CRAP!

Chris, you and the welder friend should build an airbag drop trailer to haul drift cars behind the FJ.
When's the last time the fuel filter was changed (if it can be changed)? That might cause the engine to take a bit longer to start.
Don’t know if you saw my last comment regarding the M5 bumper, but pouring boiling water (carefully obviously) over the plastic cover can sometimes cause it to pop back into its original position. Might be worth trying before you go buy a new one.
saw it, thanks but i want it to be mint, ill be getting a replacement

Key thing is, the car is for Chelsea, as he said when he put the car back together he wants the thing perfect for her, also the insurance paid for it so it's not coming out his pocket ;)
B is for Build Fair enough mate. Would still be interesting to see if it works or how good/bad the end result is.
Thoughts on rebuilding this. Its local to me and it doesn't look like it needs alot of work

When I worked at a part store I use to sell people Subaru drain plugs because they have a groove cut for a o-ring. Simple swap, never have to replace it again (unless you screw up the o-ring)
I just realized that I started following your channel when you did the bed mod for the back. Keep up the great work

I was expecting a hood mounted axe or hi-lift jack... damn you thumb nail.
Keep the videos flowing Chris love the work!

Damn, that oil filter is the easiest to access I have ever seen.
I know, I saw that. wouldn't it drain out every time u stop the engine. I'm gonna have to look into this Toyota

My e36 318 oil filter was super easy to change
The FR-S/BRZ are the same location. I think Toyota likes to put them there for ease? Either way it's awesome.
not on all of them - i have a 2010, and its completely different. it's a cartridge style filter, mounted still in front of the engine, but down very low, in the center. you have to remove a skid plate to access it.

This FJ could use B IS FOR BUILD emblem on that grille!
Hell yes on the Korea BBQ! I lived in Korea for two years and I love kimchi! BTW great channel!
Heck yes, love the fj videos.
4 the oil filter take a bicycle chain, cut a part of the chain, 2 handels so u can wrap and grip on the filter and that's it.i'm a bike mec and thats what we use
Stu Dumpster yup... easy and quick... we use it all the time
You should build a cover plate for the top of the winch bar while it’s not being used to make the front look a lot cleaner.
Keep up the good work👍🏻👍🏻

Just a FYI comments on the last video were disabled because of the massive amount of garbage in there, dont bring it into here please.
Yea it was out of hand. If people don’t like something then don’t watch. It’s pretty simple. No need to blow up comments. Keep on going Chris. Been here since the first brz
No fuelfilter change?

Cleans the FJ before the Evora
This is an older video, as stated in the previous video. Note that even the roof of the M5 is still white, and he painted it black quite a long time ago. :-)
robertdevald yes I am well aware but a large part of me knows that he still hasn’t cleaned that Evora since he doesn’t like cleaning his cars
Eh, he probably did, and is making a video of it now :-)
robertdevald well if he sees this maybe he will ;)
Zach Gervais it's his car, he'll clean it when he's ready, and not a moment sooner
May what to check the front tires out. Looks like the tires are cupping a little . You may want to check the shockes or your suspension out.
Fun fact to tell if a Toyota has the original spark plugs: if the top of the plug has something stamped on it (like a yellow triangle) they are the original plugs.

Bring the Fj down to southern utah ill take you on a fun offroad trip!
Wide Open Throttle Garage yessss! I’ll bring my Mazda 3! Wait..
What part of Utah? I’m out in stg
Nathan Blanchard live east by zion national park
How's that bed liner holding up? I'm thinking of using it to underseal my car
thats a great idea. Do you think it would help prevent rust as I am in Canada where we get alot of snow and salt??
I would not risk putting the load from those tires (plus firewood?) on those lightweight cross members they provide. So am curious how it turned out.
You should put some tiles or smth on the driveway, helps washing and easier to push cars around;D
B is for Build have my Mazda CX-5 fuel system super clean! Just put some in yesterday :-)
Awesome videos, great skills and energy! Finishing touch would be to paint the inside door around the windows also black - Almost OCD material :)
If it helps I find the best way to remove an oil filter is to add a large jubilee or hose clip and hit the screw part.
Mount the light bar on the front grill or bumper. I'm bummed the light bars are gone....
Can’t you just put one of those roof straps through the wheels between the spokes? That seems like a really sturdy solution for at least not having the wheels fly off.
Love this truck!
So glad my car never needs a crush washer/gasket of the oil drain bolt.
this build makes me want to buy an FJ
Safety. That's what I'm talking about
Now you need to remove the rhino liner and let the beautiful blue show!
Have you possibly considered later builds with a Ford Focus?
I hope the next car is a Evo or STi. I'd imagine you would love them cause they are super tuneable and have a lot of room cause they are sedans.
Have you considered a headlight upgrade? They are looking worn and I'd guess someone has an LED replacement similar to with Jeep wranglers have.
"Voilà, Oil Filter ChichKebab" As a french viewer, i'm still laughting :D
How are the rough country’s holding up?
Been here for almost three years and im still waiting for you to build a freaking supra, come on k-ris
Wait so the screwdriver through the filter isnt the oem removal method? Now you tell me
the wheels on the roof are pretty small. I think bigger wheels might give you problems mounting them up there.
Finally, haven't seen the video yet, but hopefully the u joints get serviced.
No u joint love... I just suggest you maintain them frequently since the FJ is 4wd (4x4 all the time)
if you rip off that secondary air filter off the intake you'll get better throttle response
Aren't you supposed to change the oil AFTER using the fuel system cleaner? That's what i always do because i thought it makes the oil dirty after use.
Love the fj I'm trying to find a six speed as my next vehicle. Thanks for always entertaining me Chris!
What happened to the Toyota emblem on the front grill? Get one gloss black
Did you gap the plugs though
large slip joint pliers work great for removing oil filter!!!!
Props to you for disabling the comments on the evora video. People are getting out of control these days. Give them a say, n they feel they can run your life. If every subscriber gave you $1, you'd have a great storage place. Put up, or, shut up folks.
this FJ looks really good! how about adding white lettering on the tires?
You should put a b is for build sticker on the front of the fj
Why didn't you replace the fuel filter?
The_Homeless_ CDN Really? I have a listing for FJ Cruisers from 2011-2016 to have a Z683 Fuel Filter, similar to the Prado.
The_Homeless_ CDN I'm glad i own a Prado then.
The_Homeless_ CDN nah, I'm not shit canning the fj, i just feel these things should be easily replaced.
What tires brand and wheel brand are you running?
This really reminds me, I should do an oil change in my 260z lol
