Also, a lot of discussion around what younger people play. I’d recommend diving into one. I did so years ago to find out what Minecraft was all about. I am approaching 3000 hours in that game now. Learning how to bend the mechanics of that game to my will and dominate the world was the single most satisfying platinum trophy I ever received. And it has also been the source of some of my favorite gaming memories with my partner and friends. It’s worth the effort to see what the new generation likes.

Haven’t touched any games for about 3 months. This happens a lot when I’m going through some tough life shit but I never completely lose interest and always end up going back to something after a while

Gaming is still my #1 source of entertainment into my 40s and I don't plan on slowing down until my body starts to fail.

Don't plan on ever stopping. It's a hobby I love and I'm not ashamed of it.
I've definitely had lulls though. 2022 was a big one. Nothing was jiving with me that year and I played like 3 games the entire year with months of time where I played nothing.
20:50 I feel like A LOT of people are like this nowadays, and not just younger gamers. I’ve been on subreddits for FFVII Rebirth. So many people were complaining about a specific region involving mushrooms because they felt it was too complicated. When I finally got to that point, I ran into maybe one or two spots that took maybe 30 seconds of brain power to actually solve. It’s like people do not have the capacity to put in effort more than the bare minimum. Then they turn around and call it bad game design, when in reality they just want to get from point A to point B with 0 resistance.

I am 47 and still play games, but definitely not as much as I used to as I have gotten more into movies, tv shows, anime, and just other life stuff taking up my time. But I will always be a gamer as long as Nintendo keeps making Metroid and Mario Kart games lol

Exactly. To me its like asking are you gonna stop listening to music one day or hell are ya getting tired of hearing people talk all the time... Maybe think about slowing down on listening to people. Lol what a silly question lol will we stop playing games lol. If heaven isnt just one big video game experience ill be highly disappointed and request for leave lol
I mean for alot of people they do. People stop going to theaters and i personally know people who brag about not reading a book since high school

I’m turning 32 this year and constantly think about the time I spend gaming and what that will look like in the future. With how the industry has been changing in recent months too I’m curious what the gaming landscape will even look like in 5+ years.
I never plan to stop gaming but agree that life forces your hand and you inevitably slow down. If anything, I think as time goes on I’ll spend less time playing larger games and focus more on smaller games and self-contained experiences for variety’s sake.

I am a 52yr old professional and have been playing games since I was 6yrs old, when I first laid my eyes on the Atari 2600, which I still have.
I worked in the game biz for 19yrs, which fueled my love. I passed my love down to both my sons. My oldest has made (2) games on his own and is working towards a career in games. My other works at Google as a software engineer, also working on a game with my older son.
You WILL slow down, be more selective with what you play, play less RPG’s 😂mostly because of your time.
I follow the industry daily (Kinda Funny and SpawnWave are my daily) I’m on top of everything in games. At my age and career, I know am a rare breed and when ppl meet me or find out I game, there is a bit of eyebrows raised and shock but instant cred with kids and teens., also instant relatability with those single moms with kids 😂, im way cooler than they thought!
Interesting things is with younger audiences, they are far less knowledgeable than one would expect. I think it is because of the how and where they consume information plus most kids play the mass market games and stop there.
I’m like Greg, I love single player, narrative driven games but I do like a good substance multiplayer game that I can hook up and play with my sons online.
Games keep your mind fresh and youthful, don’t stop, can’t stop!

Great conversation guys. I turn 31 this year. I have an 11 year old daughter and I don’t get to play as much as I want but I still manage to squeeze in a handful of hours each week. I at least try most of the major releases each year still and don’t see that changing anytime soon. There are moments/emotions that only video games can deliver and that amazes me.
When/if I lose my eyesight or can no longer hold a controller because of crippling arthritis.

Not necessarily. I don't like where gaming is headed, so I might just be playing old games and consoles if I live to be a useless old turd. Not as many options for those.
Totally agree with Tim about giving things your undivided attention. It’s the same with movies, tv shows, whatever.
But especially with games, I feel like so much work goes into these things that I owe it to myself and the creators to actually pay attention and fully experience it.
Also, it’s hard to have a real opinion on a game/movie/show if I only experience it while watching something else.
Maybe that’s why I’m not really into handheld gaming.

I am 44 and have been playing video games since 1985 and it hasnt changed and will not change till the day I die.
I read so much stuff about how gaming addiction is killing us etc. except I still love it today more than I’ve ever done. 2023 and 2024 have been so good in providing SO MANY meaningful experiences
I think I'll be gaming for a long time. What people watch in movies and TV is me = playing video games.

I doubt I’ll stop gaming…as you get older, carving time out for it becomes a bit more difficult. Especially when you have other hobbies. I’ve found that now I enjoy going back and finding the gems that I may have missed on previous console generations. Less of keeping up, and Moreso just enjoy the experiences as I find them.
I have been playing video games since the Arcade days in the 80's. I do not plan to stop playing video games with the exception of Twitch Shooters.
My son is 4. We just passed Spiderman together on PS5. He played with the controller for 70% of the game. It was so much fun.

This is EXACTLY why Greg specifically (and others) should not talk about PSVR2 (and vr overall). Respectfully, you LITERALLY don’t know what you’re talking about and I DO NOT BLAME YOU. (I’m using Greg as an example, obviously this goes to many ‘pundits’). You literally do not have the time to judge this subsect of gaming objectively. You can’t even play the flatscreen games you WANT to play let alone get acclimated to playing VR. Your views are tainted by your success and obligations WHICH IS MORE THAN FINE. I love all the shows yall produce, watch all the content, love the entire staff (yes even Nick) and been a fan of Greg’s for over a decade. So it’s not hate. You (and others) are just the wrong candidates to objectively speak on the medium and have been doing the platform(s) a huge disservice. (Not more than SONY has tho and to be very clear I do agree with MOST of your criticisms on how SONY in particular is handling their machine)…again NO HATE, NO PITCHFORKS…..just saying.
Having a kid has really significantly reduced not only my time gaming, but also my drive to game since my free time is now spent catching up with my wife and sleeping. My avg daily game time has gone down from 2-ish hours to maybe 45min? It makes even short games take actual weeks to finish. Very different life. Maybe I'll get back to the way it was sometime in the future. We'll see. Games are still my preferred method of consuming media though. Not sure if/when that will ever change.
Yep, used to look down on campaigns that were 6 hrs. Made fun of them. Now I just wish all games were under 10hrs because this 10-30hr campaigns are a slog. After 3 kids that can take a month or more to complete

No one would ever ask another person if they ever think they're going to stop watching movies/tv, listening to music, or reading, but it's a pretty frequent question about gaming. The answer, as long as I don't lose the use of my hands or eyes and life/time allows for it, is absolutely never.

When you consume media.. movies.. shows.. video games.. you consume that media alone.. so many people put so much love into.. world.. detail.. music.. voice..cinematography.. resolution... set pieces.. etc for you to just ignore all of that and listen to Joe rogan while playing a video game.. I do not agree with blessing watching a show like shogun and playing a game. You are half in one and the other not totally immersed.. one experience is suffering because the other is getting your attention at a moment.. or you may miss key moments! For some reason.. ign.. and kinda funny are the only ones I hear voice that they watch shows while playing video games..
This has been one of the most interesting discussions they’ve done yet. I think every game at one point has to challenge their mortality in the viewpoint of playing games and discussion around that is always super fascinating

I'll be 50 this year. I grew up in the arcade. I see no end in site. I try to get me 13 year old into what I'm into, but she only plays Roblox.
Ill never stop gaming. I LOVE video games deeply, and I cannot wait for my kids and eventually grand kids to join me in my games.

I understand it's the only way he can play most big games AND watch shows but I think he just needs to accept he'll never play all big games and that's ok
As a 37 year old gamer im gaming everyday and have been basically ever since i was 5.
I think hardcore gamers like me need to accept that we simply can't play all the games and be ok with that fact.
I can't ever see me giving up gaming, the only thing i can see happening is giving up playing fast paced multiplayer games.
Gaming is unique in that its able to give the user experiences that no other medium can so why would i give that up
i recently took a little 4-6 month break from games. it was right after I turned 29. That didn’t have too much to do with it, more that i was just getting back into dating and general socializing. it was a nice reprieve but damn it’s good to be back
Tim, everything you said about how you engage with games resonated with me so much! Dead pixels!! My first HD TV in 2007 had 1 dead pixel and it bothered me for the 1.5 years I owned that TV. I gave it to my brother 15 years ago and mention it like once a year and he's never noticed it.
And while I respect that people do other things while gaming, when I'm consuming any form of media, its got my full attention. Like I JUST got a 77inch LG G2 OLED and a 7.1 system for my basement home theater. And I sit like 10 feet away and have it SUPER loud (my wife and kid can't hear it at night which is SO AMAZING!). And I've been playing Ghosts of Tsushima religiously on it. Thats a game I had played before on a standard setup but its a WHOLE different experience in this immersive setup. And I just can't fathom listening to a podcast or watching something else while playing that, i just would not enjoy the experience in the same way.
50yr old gamer. My mom's second husband, when I was 4, worked for Atari. That was the beginning, Now having a 16 year old son who I started with lego star wars at 3yo, I realize that was a mistake for my family. I took him from that to Fortnite and now he is, as Andy and Greg described, the kid who rarely if ever will play a story based game. For him it's Minecraft (all flavours), Valorent and fortnite for fun. He is a reader and loves mythology so I tried to hand him God Of War. It didn't stick. Hopefully someday!
I wish I kept him focussed on story based longer.

I’ve had an oled since 2016 as well. It’s my main gaming and content consumption device. I recently bought a mini lcd for the bedroom and not a day goes by that I don’t regret buying a non oled tv. It’s a sickness. OLED all the things.
I loved listening to this episode. I hope we can get more of these “gaming therapy sessions” in the future cause this is excellent.
I could see it pick up as my kids get older and then maybe slow down once I’m hitting 60s-70s. But that’s still 25 years away so I’m looking forward to playing more.

39 and still play games all the time and probably more than ever. Now just to make sure my 5 and 2 year old don't fall into Fortnite, Minecraft and Rolblox is the biggest obstacle to climb. My 5 year old only wants to play Minecraft and that is it. Although he has been all about Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart lately. I go from playing on my ROG Ally on the bus to and from work to playing on my PC and PS5 every night. But I feel like this episode is telling my how I can become a better dad. Been playing games since I was 5. I'm 21 now. I think I'll never stop, but slow down like Bless was saying. As for Dragon's Dogma 2, I'm 75 hours in and I'm still loving it. Andy said you get Dragon's Plague from killing dragons. I've killed 3 so far. No Dragon's Plague. Hopefully I didn't just curse myself.

Andy... recently I finally decided to go back to 16x9, was rocking ultrawides for years, but dual 16x9 is just way more practical.
Games are my de-stressor, but I definitely see myself slowing down and going to more of a large title kind of thing as I get older.

What's happening with kids today is that games like Fortnite, Minecraft and CoD have become social activities where kids log on to hangout. The game itself is pretty secondary. My younger brother will spend hours in custom games just chilling with his friends.
I definitely think that’s the mistake the this industry’s are making they think that because so many people are playing Fortnite or modern warfare or this other games that there are new gamers being made but everyone that I know that plays these games are not interested in real games. It is a really weird phenomenon at least to me.
I was definitely one of those kids that only played mp games (cod, halo, battlefield, etc.) I didn’t truly appreciate single player narrative games until Bioshock Infinite came out when I was like 16 lol very late bloomer.
Then I saw Greg host a panel at Momocon for Bioshock Infinite and I was like oh video games are so much more than I thought they were lmao

I've always said I would be a gamer until dead. However, recently I tried doing the Platinum trophy for Cuphead. I am close to 40 y/o, and this was the first time in my life where I felt that it was physically impossible for me to achieve. My reflexes just aren't there, anymore. I beat that game. But, the skill required for the Platinum is too high for me. Thats when I realized that, as I age, there will be less and less video-games that I can actually play and beat. Thats why I understand the argument for difficulty settings. That shouldn't be controversial.

I will probably phase it out of my life once I have kids. I’ll probably dive heavy back in after I raise them but I love to screw off for 6 hours on a Saturday to play an rpg and I’d rather not try and find random hours in the week. All or nothing.
Might get burn out from a certain type of game but then I'll just play a different genre. Gaming and watching Anime i don't think I will ever stop either one
I don't ever see myself stopping playing games, I do think that the type of game I play will change a lot though. I already play almost no competitive games aside from jumping into Apex or Warzone once in a great while. I think once my reaction time starts to go to shit I will probably have to give up Souls games. I was thinking I as already starting to hit a slow reaction time point while playing the Stellar Blade demo but I started seeing a lot of complaints on Reddit about the input lag for the game so apparently it's not just me.
