yeah. also the irony of how the "creating" they're highlighting is purposefully swiped down for conventionality and video codes that work. youtube, to the eyes of youtube, isn't about creating anymore, it's about regurgitating the same bangers in slightly different shapes.

7:02 "I realize now that rank no.1 isn't an achievement: It's a prison, which forces you to dedicate your life to defending a temporary title" Technoblade - Skyblock: Potato War 3 (FINALE)
Winning combination is to give your viewers the things they want to see. Being a TH-camr is business, and business owners give people products/services that people need in their life. It's practically the same. And when the growth becomes real, you can consider hiring people to help you run your channel more efficiently. The most difficult part is starting and growing of course, but consistency and hard work (with a little bit of Famester to help) will always pay off at the end. Good luck to everyone, I really hope you are going to succeed one day.
It's been fun seeing the kid of the internet grow up. Even TH-cam grew up alongside with him. We will be here with you every step of the way Tommy. Keep it up
Hey, Tommy! Met you a couple times during TwitchCon just out of random chance. Really needed a video like this after being out of the TH-cam game for a couple months. I love TH-cam but have come face to face with burn out. However, I realize there’s a reason for all of this. For the viewers who I love and also the friends I’ve met along the way who’ve constantly inspired me. I feel reenergized to create after hanging with so many wonderful creators these past few months. They make all of the worst aspects of TH-cam so much more worth it. Thanks, Tommy.
I'm currently in the burn out stage and wondering how long it will last. Feeling so sad to have lost touch with my spark and not sure where to find it again. This video brought me completely to tears at the end. I'm still not sure what to do about it. Everything feels overwhelming at this stage and i keep feeling like i'm just getting more and more distant and don't know how to get back
what helps me the most is knowing that my mission is to get people excited about cooking. The 10/10's happen often and I have to tell myself they are not the true measure of success. It does feel bad that it is tied to our way to live and produce content through less revenue, but it's becoming less of a problem with the mission at the front. Great video man.
10:35 “one of you is in the right place at the right time, you just don’t know it yet” is actually really motivating, we don’t know what the future holds and we should therefore be in the present and do what we right now feel like is right.
Fantastic perspective on current day TH-cam. Love it when you keep it real Tommy, it means a lot. Creating should always be about passion first before views.
This is a really inspiring video, thank you for making it. It's important to be reminded why we started this to begin with! It's very easy to get caught up in the numbers and only think about that, so I appreciate this message
Hold up, ain't yo- nah I'm not gonna say it. Glad to see you on the good side of TH-cam, Nathaniel. Loved watching your videos years ago when I was ill and in bed.
Man im loving this new style of content not just TH-cam im loving hearing about your stand up stuff it sounds like your loving it cant wait to see what's coming
I hate it. =( STOPSTOPSTOP Edit: Dude I dont want him to change, he can be how he wants. I was just sharing my opinion. Dont "LIL BRO" me. Just one year ago you could look and see he was different. His looks haven't changed almost at all whatsoever, the personality and maturity growth for 99% of males ends at about 17. Not years later. At max 18. Maturity is something that happens over time, not in ONE YEAR. It takes a long time to grow more mature and advance. I'm all good with him changing his personality and all, he might just not want to be known as a kid, but I just dont like it because how he talks and acts reminds me of BOOMERS. 2nd edit: guys please i just want to chill i wont respond anymore. I guess I cant share my goddamn opinion
@@Calvare16he's an adult now lol. The passage of time is both as scary as it is inevitable. I did love the 2020 tommyinnit and general mcyt but Change happens 🤷♀️. This is pretty great too.
I’m taking Philosophy this semester, and the way Tommy asked all the TH-camrs hard questions and them not knowing the answers is exactly what Socrates did in Ancient Greece. He asked all the “wise men” how they were so “wise” and they ultimately couldn’t answer him. And so started philosophy and the study of why we do what we do rather than just doing it. I hope this is a turning point in TH-cam where a new generation of creators (or even older, rejuvenated ones), start creating for the sake of creating rather than just doing it bc it’s what you do.
Breaking into TH-cam post 201X seems so counter-intuitive. I have to be original but also compatible. Videos should be meaningful but also optimised for retention from second zero, like and subscribe. Content has to be high effort, high quality but you're expected to release on a schedule, as often as possible. It's tough when you want to be an artist about it, not a content farm. Well, need to get back to staring at numbers!
Fukc you lol. Do you even know what is like to work a real job? At a real schedule? "Looking at numbers" isn't nothing compared to getting in and out at the same time, everyday.
feel this so much dude, I spent so much time the past 5-10 years sorta living online/making content and practicing what I love (music) consistently... This past 2 years I've spent so much time all of a sudden creating a community of real people that don't do WHAT I do, I go on walks with homies. I get invited to things and actually go (no excuses of I need to make a video or something) I spend time with my GF and I have started doing SHOWS, they're so fun. It's so fun to live in the real world and do what I want to do there and have all this knowledge from so many years of doing it online. Respect this video alot.
Thanks for making this Tommy, this was what I needed to hear! I'm currently working towards going full-time doing YT and It feels almost impossible, but thanks for helping me remember why I started making videos!
I’ve seen so many smaller TH-camrs I’ve loved to watch over the years grow and begin to lose the individual sparks that drew me to their channels in the first place. A few of them have returned over the past few years, and they all said something along the lines of what you said in this video. I am so glad to see more people speaking about the state of TH-cam, and I hope this video inspires a few of the other creators I used to watch, to try again.
honestly, i really needed this tom. uploaded some shit videos, streaming has been sub par, and generally being able to record has been harder all cause i’m in college. i know people love what i make and thats all i should care about, not some numbers. thank you tommy, if you ever see this. you have been an inspiration to me since the start ❤
I'm in college too, bro. All you need is to love what you make. I'm trying to be a TH-camr myself, and tbh, that's all you need. If it works, it works, and if it doesn't, it doesn't. Simple as that ;)
You're so real for all of this. It's so easy to lose sight of why we started climbing the mountain in the first place. One of my biggest takeaways after streaming and making videos for 12+ years is that the "grind" isn't real. It's all just made up and doesn't actually mean anything. You will honestly find so much more value in your craft when you stop to smell the roses, give yourself a break, and take time outside of grinding to build genuine connections with others. In fact, there are times where I completely pause from climbing the endless mountain and take in my surroundings. Maybe there are people walking past me. Maybe there's a lot of chatter amongst the people, animals, and wildlife. But man, what a beautiful sunset. What a beautiful world. And how lucky are we to be a part of it. I'm truly happy to be here, I'm truly happy to foster fun content, and I could not be more glad to share this space with so many amazing people.
Nowadays, TH-cam has become super competitive, and like you said, it’s more of a business now, rewarding fewer passion projects. Over the years, I’ve had several TH-cam channels fail, ranging from vlogs to Call of Duty videos, horror games, and comedy skits. No matter how much effort or quality I put into them, TH-cam kept burying them, and eventually, they died off, which was tough to deal with. About a year ago, I was pretty much done with TH-cam. But then I decided to start something I was genuinely passionate about, this channel which focuses on comedy parody redubs of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. I kicked it off this year with my team of voice actors and scriptwriters, and I’ve loved every bit of what we’ve created. But now, TH-cam’s promoting our videos less again, and the channel’s in decline. I just wish TH-cam made it easier for creators to focus on their passion projects instead of making it harder by rewarding them less
Preach, my brother. Ever since that rewind of 2018, TH-cam has shot themselves in the foot over and over. Focusing more on quantity more than quality, which is why big TH-camrs get by easily.
Finally. Someone had the balls to say it right in front of TH-cam's face. I'm a newgen TH-camr. I make music, and I also have an alt channel for gaming. I want to avoid the thumbnail nonsense, I want to make something people find and say "Wow, this is new." So thank you. Thank you for acknowledging these glaring issues.
As someone who also desires a creative field, It’s such a breath of fresh air to hear this perspective. Thank you for being a positive voice for the creator community and best of luck on comedy or any future endeavors! ❤️
Thank you. I was going through my own mini crisis about where to go as a small creator the day before this was uploaded, and hearing what you had to say, man it really helped. Keep doing what you want to do man. Thanks for the laughs over the years and the advice for years to come
Watching the end… I cried. I balled my fucking eyes out. I had lost my motivation for anything, but I’m slowly getting it back and understanding myself again. This video really just helped realize how far I’ve came in so little time. Thank you Tommy, this video is really an honest truth that I didn’t know I needed until I saw it. I hope one day I can reach that right moment, and be exactly where I need to be to reach my dreams. Thank you for the inspiration and being there for all of us❤
SAME. Rather he realises it or not, he’s also changed a lot n watching him for years now grow into who he is now is so bittersweet honestly, shows that time in fact does change things
As a small channel trying to regrow after a long hiatus, I completely relate to a what of you just said about obessing and getting down over the numbers and especially the red arrows lol - Not pulling what I used to is taxing, but heyho, I do enjoy editing and listening to you talk about it is inspiring. Gotta not get lost and stuck in the BS and carry on enjoying what I enjoy doing! :)
Absolute banger video. To see a channel this big push for art and soul over all else when creating is deeply meaningful. Such a great watch, it deeply resonated.
This resonates with me a lot. I thought I was weird for not checking my stats, but I just grew past that. Why look at the stats when you can spend that time making a great video that people are actually going to enjoy?
Tommy you earned that pretentious VHS preset like 5 times over, really great video. I hope the next “era”’of TH-cam is a healthier one, for everyone’s sake. Thank you
@@trevorlockhard1446 kinda,he didnt mention them, but he did mention DanTDM,which couldve been a coincidence but given recent controversies its very unlikely that it was mere coincidence
@@DripDrangonheadthe pictures were there. Although it could have been placed in there by the editor without Tommy’s permission, tommy would have seen it and removed the video had he disagreed. Therefore he definitely meant to roast them lol.
7:23 its a quote from a great man who understood this well, "rank #1 isnt an achievement, its a prison, which forces you to dedicate your life to deffending a temporary title" i think this is what embodys those who arent businesses, just suffering striving for endless goal that can never be won, only trapping you in this war of content, the only way to escape, is to give up.
I think "give up" is a bad way to put it. Don't give up being a TH-camr and/or content creator, just stop trying to strive for a goal that's harmful and unreasonable. Content creation should be done for those that want to entertain, not to make money. It's there for people that create "content". Content doesn't have to be extravagant. Content doesn't have to be popular. Content can be a video where someone talks about their favorite niche game using a bad quality mic and a bunch of images in place of who they are that gets 300 views. Keep at it y'all. Have fun with it. Hell, record yourself playing games or doing stuff with friends. The best content isn't the content that just makes memories, it holds them too.
@@nurfgal i didnt mean to give up on youtube, i meant to give up on succseeding, like obviously some behaviors like asking people to subscribe and what not are fine, but things like not checking your analitics, to looking at view counts as much, that kind of thing
@@Ratharaine Ohhhh yeah, that makes sense. You don't "succeed" on TH-cam, you entertain. Massive difference, and it's a good thing you know how to differentiate the two. /pos
I needed this 💜 also I'm kinda loving how many CCs are starting to speak this out - be yourself, find your spark, do this for yourself instead of the algorithm. I'm hearing it from multiple places
This video really just hits hard, I’ve watched Tom’s streams since 2020, and watching him grow up to be so much more mature yet still being hilarious just amazes me. I cannot imagine my life without the Mcyt community, thank you Tom, thank you for everything you’ve brought to our lives. So proud that you’ve gotten this far.
real That top 10 shit definitely had a negative effect on how I saw things but it's also just sometimes not worth it at all doing something purely for the algorithm when it's no fun. I totally fell off from a couple hundred thousand to under 10 thousand views as soon as I started making what I enjoy doing a little more instead of doing what the algorithm wants. But then again, I try to always remember how I basically just kept making content for almost a decade with under a hundred views on every video back in the day. Even if nobody was watching, I had the most fun with it and I will always remember those videos the most.
Honestly fr, The internet has changed so much its sorta scary. But if you want to take a break from the internet i dont mind it, its your own choice/decision.
the fact that tommy has grinded his way through youtube the past 6 years amazes me, so many bad things happen and either way he stuck to what he loves. Whatever you choose to do you’ve got millions of people behind you Tom. Thanks for everything!
Fr,its genuinely dystopian Soulless, corporate fake videos thrown left and right,,people just pretending to be someone they're not,and the audience eating it all up like an endless breakfast on an endless morning
To be honest, I’m completely unsure if any big time TH-camrs get the chance to look though the comments or if other viewers feel the same but I sure do know that this video has meant something to me. This video is inspiring and genuine. Sometimes we all need to step back and appreciate life and I think this video proved that. No matter the viewers or the subscribers, you will always mean something to many people, keep living your life to the fullest!
I love how the aspect ratio on this video isn’t the standard 16:9, it really hones in that feel of being yourself and pushing against the algorithmic style of modern TH-cam
As a (small) TH-camr who's lifelong passion for doing this has been reignited the past year (and slowly burnt out a little bit), this was a really comforting video. I know I'm nowhere near the amount of typical numerical 'success' that a lot of TH-camrs have and aim for, but damn. This hit hard. With trying to constantly analyze TH-cam as a whole and make 'algorithmically perfect' videos, I think a lot of us lose the whole reasoning behind why he pressed upload in the first place years ago. Because it seemed fun. I know this'll never be seen in the vast ocean of lovely comments, but sincerely, thank you Tom. Thank you for uploading this video at the right time, and the right place. To anyone who reads this, I wish you the best of luck with anything and everything. Except being a jackass. Don't be a jackass.
You couldn't have said it better. When I started my TH-cam journey a year ago, I made the ultimate decision that I wasn't going to do anything for views. I wasn't going to chase trends, I wasn't going to try to rub elbows like my life depended on it, and I just wasn't going to be chronically online. From listening to plenty of successful people on the platform I knew every method and path to take to be "successful" but I saw one similar thing throughout. Most of them are MISERABLE. Why would I want to be miserable doing something I thought should be fun? So screw the metrics, screw the views, screw the subs. I'm just going to do what I want and HAVE FUN! So thank you and everyone else willing to be real and giving me that encouragement!
it’s actually crazy how much this helped me. trying to get out of this rut in content i’ve been but seeing you reflect helped remind me what got me into it all, having fun and making others happy. thank you tommy

Cool

Nice way to put it
and then he said we should ban all the art and only play certain kinds of music
Breaking into TH-cam post 201X seems so counter-intuitive. I have to be original but also compatible. Videos should be meaningful but also optimised for retention from second zero, like and subscribe. Content has to be high effort, high quality but you're expected to release on a schedule, as often as possible. It's tough when you want to be an artist about it, not a content farm. Well, need to get back to staring at numbers!
Didn't expect you here, love your videos! I can see how difficult it's gotta be making that level of quality on a regular basis but don't give up!
its not a good career choice
Fukc you lol. Do you even know what is like to work a real job? At a real schedule? "Looking at numbers" isn't nothing compared to getting in and out at the same time, everyday.

I get invited to things and actually go (no excuses of I need to make a video or something) I spend time with my GF and I have started doing SHOWS, they're so fun. It's so fun to live in the real world and do what I want to do there and have all this knowledge from so many years of doing it online. Respect this video alot.

Focusing more on quantity more than quality, which is why big TH-camrs get by easily.
oh man you described my entire life
Finally. Someone had the balls to say it right in front of TH-cam's face.

That top 10 shit definitely had a negative effect on how I saw things but it's also just sometimes not worth it at all doing something purely for the algorithm when it's no fun.
I totally fell off from a couple hundred thousand to under 10 thousand views as soon as I started making what I enjoy doing a little more instead of doing what the algorithm wants. But then again, I try to always remember how I basically just kept making content for almost a decade with under a hundred views on every video back in the day. Even if nobody was watching, I had the most fun with it and I will always remember those videos the most.

the fact that tommy has grinded his way through youtube the past 6 years amazes me, so many bad things happen and either way he stuck to what he loves. Whatever you choose to do you’ve got millions of people behind you Tom. Thanks for everything!
TH-cam has become increasingly less and less down to earth. I hope that simply doing what you love just because you love it, will be normalised again.
Fr,its genuinely dystopian
Soulless, corporate fake videos thrown left and right,,people just pretending to be someone they're not,and the audience eating it all up like an endless breakfast on an endless morning

@@lollol-gu7wi haha thank you!
“And just thinking, if I can nail his editing style… it might just feel like he’s alive again”
This hit *really* hard
