I love opera, and regarding this seemingly endless debate about Callas and Tebaldi I think it´s like comparing two beautiful mountains, or rivers, or some other aspects of nature. It´s simple. Why don´t we accept both as wonderful, as a gift from Nature? Simply put: THEY CANNOT BE COMPARED. They should be enjoyed, period. For instance, many people like beaches, the sea, etc., but I don´t enjoy them, I definitely prefer hills and mountains and rivers. So, let´s stop comparing, and let´s enjoy them BOTH. This will result in absolute respect for these two wonderful singers, who gave all they had, their wonderful voices, to all of us opera lovers.
Listen carefully........these great singers have a lot more in common than what we think devides them......they follow the composers markings to the letter....and for this.....for me they reflect each other perfectly!!!!
In my earlier years Tebaldi was my favorite and Maria Callas I didn't like her voice. I've developed my musical ear since then and no one can touch Maria. A beautiful voice is nothing if you don't put your whole soul into it. God I can't believe I couldn't see Maria Callas back then. Deanna Durban sang Beautifully with her voice..that's who Tebalti was influenced by. Caruso is my male favorite..what he puts into his voice is nothing short of magnificent glorious...Real Deal !!! It's important to develop your musical ear. When I go to a movie a concert they better put all there love into it. Maria Callas did it ... God I'm so glad I woke up. Peace everyone
Callas never sang this aria on stage,so she could build micro nuances recording.Tebaldi sang on stage with ample,let go,emotional,stunning voice. So thete is no comparison.And I prefer Tebaldi,withbeautiful legato,generousand ample singing and voice of angel!
Renata Tebaldi, voce angelica, dà un'interpretazione dell'aria che tende troppo al drammatico, specialmente nelle note gravi. La Callas è semplicemente divina. La sua interpretazione è umanissima, elegiaca e piena di rimpianto, come richiede il brano. Perfetta e imbattibile.
Due grandi soprani ! La Tebaldi è come se mio dicesse " ascolta quant'è bella la mia voce " E' vero ! La Callas mi pare di vederla sospesa sul filo sopra al precipizio. Subito mi fa capire il dramma che sta vivendo. Io tremo per la sua voce che potrebbe cadere da un momento all'altro. Il suo acuto alla fine che va oltre la mia aspettativa, mi fa comprendere quanto sia vera la sua grandezza di artista !
What I find so amazing about these two, is the very different styles of "vocal schooling" they came from. Tebaldi was trained in the Verismo style, whereas Callas was trained in the Bel Canto "school", or style of singing. And yet, heating these 2 remarkable ladies singing this aria (an aria from the Verismo era), while Tebaldi's training in Verismo is obviously excellent for this, I find that Callas's "Bel Canto-ish" approach just adds that much more excitement and dramatic clarity to this very Verismo piece.
Doesn't matter what style of vocal schooling they studied ....you have to be able to master more then your breathing. Hate love sadness you name it and Maria is the true Artist she makes you feel deep. Soul Gutts ....we are blessed to here her soul and when she sang she believed it. Like Judy Garland is the real deal and her voice wasn't always up to par but this women changed my whole outlook on the entertainment business I've never seen a performer move me like her. Barbra Streisand I liked in her younger years. That's the bottom line folks ...Music has to be more then a beautiful voice. To get up on the stage and sing without any technology. Old school from the past.... people.....alot of our Opera singers today shouldn't be on stage. Are there any good teachers left and there traditions. It is like our food all the nutrients are not all there. I have a voice that is more than Just Beautiful but I wasn't sure what I believed in this life and needed more life experience. I've had people pick me up off the stage and couldn't stop telling me how good my voice made them feel in the brain.It was music I wrote as I was learning the guitar. Writing about only what I new saw so far at that point in my life. My guitar playing was very new basic cords you can sing to but people loved how I made it sound. La Tabaldi è un monumento di inarrivabile grandezza. La Callas, invece, con la sua voce viene, ti afferra le spalle, ti scuote e ti fa sobbalzare. Ora non saprei stabilire quale dei due soprani sia migliore, credo siano due Titani, due giganti diversi e non è neanche salubre provare a stabilire quale possa vincere in una impobabile competizione. Ma so per certo che il suono della voce di Maria Callas riesce toccare le corde più profonde dell'anima.
Callas, to me, does none of the things you say she does. Perhaps she touches your soul. She does not touch mine, whereas Tebaldi could not be more moving. One thing I wish Callas fans would do is to stop talking in generalities (touching the soul, reaching the inner heart of the music). These are just parroted phrases without meaning, and they fo not apply to whole world. This is the reverential, revisionist “Callas is always better!” view, which was not the case during her brief career. In some roles and arias, yes, Callas was the greatest. For me, Wally? No.
Thank you for posting these stupendous artists. How fortunate we were to have lived when they did, and to be able to capture their voices. Like mighty forged rings of color turned into sound.
Tebaldi is a very nice voice, but something you forget a couple of seconds after hearing it. Callas, on the other hand, is unearthly, her voice will haunt you for ever and even a child will recognize it after first hearing.
Almost impossible to choose between them because they are so different singers. But both gave us the best we can have. Personally I prefer Tebaldi in this aria, due to the sheer beauty of her voice and amazing vocal control, but Callas has that unexplicable way of going straight into our hearts with her unique voice. Let us stay with both and enjoy their unmatched singing.
Callas is a superb stage performer displaying deep emotion. But Renata has the superior voice. Again, it's a question of taste. Every ear has different taste.
In an age bereft of any great dramatic voices both of these legendary sopranos give us the power, passion, commitment, excitement, beauty......the list could go on for ever.......that,sadly, we can only but imagine today......to choose between them is foolish, let us enjoy their recorded legacy and appreciate their complimentary gifts!!
Not one single pianissimo in Tebaldi's voice here. A mezz-forte and forte all the way through. And a wide range of colours, intentions depths on the other side.

Il mio grande amore è la Tebaldi, ma trovo inutile in questo caso voler trovare una "vincitrice"...esprimono due mondi completamente diversi...la Tebaldi, pur nella sua bellezza e purezza di suono, è verista per antonomasia per il calore umano e la generosità del suo canto...la Callas, d'altro canto, col suo approccio intellettuale e rigoroso da belcantista, sfrutta al massimo le possibilità dei colori e del fraseggio dipingendo una Wally impalpabile, che sembra fondersi con la neve e le nubi...
Mr. DiStefano, I guess this is a good time to end a dispute that clearly is not capable of resolution. I think we both recognize that these two great artists had their strong points and some shortcomings. In the final analysis we are dealing with a question of artistry that is always subjective in terms of our appreciation of it. You are taken with Ms Callas's technique and I am taken with the beauty of Ms Tebaldi's voice. On that basis you would rather listen to Ms Callas and I to Ms Tebaldi. But aren't we lucky that we don't have to make that choice I.e. choosing one to the exclusion of the other. We can enjoy both. Maria Callas is more then a technique she delivers the emotions like your suppose. I heard no great depth in emotions from Tebaldi and use to love her for sometime until Maria Callas she loves her singing... you could have a bad voice and still please the audience with your passion and depth where it should be. Also Maria Callas has a Beautiful voice not always what I thought was the kind of singing I cared for until I grew up and learned that a performer has to love life and I hear it in Maria...screw the technique
La Tebaldi è scelta qui in una tardiva incisione del 1969, la Callas nella sua unica lettura di quest'aria, in disco, nel 1954. 15 anni di differenza per esprimere un giudizio su un paragone improponibile. La Callas in studio, e nel 1954 anno di grazia, poteva permettersi dei giochi e dei virtuosismi assolutamente non riproducibili in live. La tebaldi quest'aria in live l'ha cantata per tutta la carriera e non ci sono trucchi. oltretutto l'interpretazione della tebaldi, è impostata secondo la tradizione canonica delle cantanti che quest'opera avevano interpretato: voce granitica, freddezza del personaggio coniugata all'inflessibilità caratteriale, e cedimento al sentimento amoroso senza abbandono romantico ma con contegno tipico delle donne del posto in cui Wally è ambientata. L'interpretazione della Callas, sempre e comunque di altissimo livello, non è in linea con la tradizione del personaggio, e regala a Wally troppe leggerezze non conformi al carattere del personaggio. ma è un documento imprescindibile nella discografia callasiana perché, che piaccia o no, la Callas è un mostro do bravura e di sensibilità e la sua lettura dell'aria ha aperto la strada alla lettura della Caballè e della Scotto, un po' anch'esse fuori dell'alveo tradizionale del personaggio ma anch'esse suggestive. La Tebaldi, invece, è Wally in ogni frase, in ogni accento. La rotondità dei suoni e la fermezza degli stessi sono speculari al personaggio, che "come rupe d'Oetz" è fermo nei suoi voleri. Per la Tebaldi sceglierei come anno l'incisione con Basile del 1950, quella live alla Scala (molto disturbata acusticamente) del 7 dicembre 53 con Giulini, oppure Buenos Aires sempre 1953, o ancora quella al Bell Telephone Hour del 1955 a New York.
Sandro Bruno, la Callas si poteva permettere giochi e virtuosismi sia in studio che in teatro e non usava alcun trucco. Se cantava l'Armida di Rossini o la Medea o "Sempre libera" dal vivo, non aveva necessita' di….
Onestamente la Callas nel repertorio verista mi sembra fatichi sempre un po': più brava negli incredibili sopracuti del belcanto che in questo Si acuto che sembra più un urlo. Colpisce invece l'aderenza sincera al testo e la tristezza struggente che riesce ad infondere al suo canto, grande attrice anche con la voce, ma forse come dice il nostro competente commentatore, poco aderente al personaggio dell'opera che al contrario rimane fiero e impassibile

@@fulvioarborio9578, questo lo dici tu. Io in 55 anni di piu' che assidua frequentazione ne ho sentiti spesso... e si coglie benissimo l'intonazione che e' la prima cosa che salta all'orecchio. Per il resto ognuno giustamente puo' pensarla in varii modi a seconda della propria sensibilita' e cultura.
Rispondo a Fabrizio Maria Garzi per ricordare che, al contrario di quanto afferma, la Tebaldi dal 1964 al 1973 non ha cantato "le solite ...." ma ha cantato Simon boccanegra, Adriana, tosca, bohème, chenier, Wally, fanciulla del west, Andrea Chenier, Falstaff, Otello, Gioconda, Mefistofele, Manon Lescaut, abitualmente. Con autentici trionfi. E paragonare due incisioni a 15 anni di distanza non è proprio il massimo dell'imparzialità. Inoltre, fino al 1960 l'interpretazione live dell'aria, in concerto live, era presente nel repertorio concertistico della tebaldi che, comprensibilmente più fresca, poteva concedere non solo maggiori sfumature sui piani e sui pianissimo, ma soprattutto un si naturale acuto lungo e stratosferico che qui, nel 1968 ovviamente non può esserci perché, comprensibilmente, era nella parabola discendente del suo astro canoro.... Ma nonostante il si naturale corto e sforzato l'aria è davvero eccellente
La mia preferenza per la Tebaldi è dovuta a una mia personale emotività e gusto musicale, ma detto questo non si può non riconoscere la grandezza della Callas, che pur non emozionandomi visceralmente mi incanta con le sue straordinarie sfumature e idee musicali...
Inguaribile Romantico. E strano... perché è proprio la capacità a rispettare le sfumature scritte dal compositore, (che sono si difficili technicamente, perciò non tutte le rispettano), che rende giustizia al canto che con l'anima si sente. Perfezione del canto, le sfrumature = sogno di tutti i cantante ! Perché pura espressione, grande emozione.
questo confronto non rende giustizia . voglio sentire la voce divina della Tebaldi del 53 quando cantava quest'aria divinamente, e non del 69... la Callas è semplicemente divina . quando si fanno questi confronti si deve fare molta attenzione di farlo in modo giusto e corretto... la registrazione del 53 della Tebaldi esiste,auguro buon ascolto a tutti voi amanti dell'arte lirica italiana.
E' vero, come sempre ma c'é un ma... non giudico la freschezza vocale e neppure il valore del canto... dico solo che per me qualunque aria canti la Callas, passa quel brivido che fa intendere che ascoltiamo la leggenda... e non dimentichiamo che mai nessuna riuscì come lei a cantare quasi tutto il repertorio operistico passando da Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, fino a Rossini in serate quasi contigue... Ho ascoltato una prima Tebaldi nella sua famosa Giovanna d'Arco, dove riuscì ibene anche nelle agilità... ma poi solo canto spianato e preferibilmente verdiano, salvo Tosca ed Adriana. Una grandissima, ma oggettivamente settoriale contrariamente alla Caballé che cantava davvero un grande repertorio con perizia e voce stupenda. Almeno per la prima parte della carriera.
A volte è accaduto il contrario. La registrazione della Callas era molto disturbata, per far risaltare quella della Tebaldi. Sono comunque, d'accordo i confronti devono essere corretti!
Pur sapendo della bravura della Callas, sono d'accordo nel dover fare i confronti alla pari. La Tebaldi è stata anche lei una grande soprano. Ribadisco "Grande Soprano".

La Tebaldi all'epoca ha avuto maggior successo di pubblico e di critica (questo vuol dire che la sua voce e il suo canto " in cantavano"). Per me però la Callas è stata di un altro " pianeta", un caso a parte, perché ha rivoluzionato il mondo della lirica , grazie anche ad un talento e ad una voce unica.

Тебальді - сильний і один з найпрекрасніших голосів по Природі. По красі голосу Велика стоїть далі. Але ж... Марія "бере" гнучкістю, чимось невловимим, що належить тільки їй. Сценічна гра, "гра" голосом - чудо.
La Tebaldi è stata una grandissima e penso che abbia avuto più successo della Callas, anche perché la sua carriera è stata molto più lunga, ma quello che è riuscita a trasmettere con il canto la Callas supera ogni tipo di confronto!
Vero la carriera della Tebaldi è durata quasi trent'anni forse più. Diciamo che la Callas nei pochi anni di splendore ,anche perché è stata meno costante, ha trasmesso qualcosa di irripetibile forse per un soprano. Anche perché come timbro di voce pochissime lo hanno bello come la Callas. Solo la Tebaldi e la De Los Angeles. La Freni bellissima voce o anche la Sutherland ma non ce la hanno così bella come queste tre.
@@andreaottelli9734, non possiamo contare con le dita gli anni di una carriera e vedere chi l'ha avuta piu' lunga. Sono i risultati quelli che contano. La Callas in ogni modo gia' dal 1938 cominciava ad affacciarsi. Ha cantato fino al 59,quasi venti anni ma con un repertorio che andava da Wagner alla Sonnambula di Bellini passando per tutto il Verdi che contava e le acrobazie di Lucia e Armida...e sopratutto Norma e Medea. La Tebaldi si e' seduta dopo un po su un programma carrieristico composto di sole Tosche, Chenier, Boheme e qualche Otello ancora. Non diro' "spartiti facili", ma certo davano assai meno problemi... per quanto se alla Maria ballavano delle note alla Renata restavano fisse e senza vibrazione. Con il bel timbro ha mascherato molto. La Callas era allo scoperto.
Non mi pare corretto impostare il confronto in questo modo. L'esecuzione della Tebaldi proviene dall'incisione completa diretta da Cleva, datata 1969, mentre quella della Callas da un recital diretto da Serafin nel 1954. E' evidente già dalle date che la Tebaldi da tempo non si trovava all'apice delle sue possibilità vocali, mentre la Callas (in teoria) dovrebbe essere pienamente in forma. Chi voglia avere un'idea più chiara della magia della Tebaldi in questa pagina ascolti esecuzioni della prima metà degli anni Cinquanta, non questa.
Riccardo Warwick, credo sia una registrazione del 1967. In ogni caso la Tebaldi canta come nel 1954, poco e' cambiato, troppi sospiri, troppa affettazione e il Si naturale era stirato pure in gioventu'.

Lo siento por los admiradores de la Tebaldi, pero la mejor cantante de la historia y la que marco un antes y después en la ópera es sin duda alguna Maria Callas, pero la verdad nunca debieron ser comparadas, pero claro pocos saben la diferencia entre una soparano Spinto y una Dramatica de colatura
María Callas impuso la actuación dramática con su inigualable voz, ella cantaba con dolor y transmitía es dramatismo al público, algo que Tibaldi nunca quiso trasmitir, por que no era una actriz de la ópera, solo cantaba y yá. Era muy rígida como muchas tantas y La Divina llevaba la ópera a una catarsis magistral. Como ella ya no habrá, nadie más.

Two spectacular sopranos. Callas takes the edge histrionically but the stridency and sharpness of some of her passages detracts somewhat from the overall performance. Tebaldi's voice and technique are certainly superior. In the final analysis, however, what I wouldn't give to see and hear either of these giants in person today.
you are right. they want to compare two great artists that are different There were gossips about their hosrility, that'snot true, they were only rivals, Because of t the strong personality of Calla , her difficult and dramatic private life,her way of living in touch of important and famous people in many fields, her glamour she is remembered more than Renata. Films, tvspecials have been dedicated to her also by our RAI: that is right because she was great, but itìs not right that Tebaldi, as many great artist of the past has been forgotten.
La Callas does have more vocal followers and is rightfully a darling of the media. However, so long as there are true and honest cognoscenti of great singing such as you La Tebaldi will not be forgotten.
+Livio Broccolino There is not harshness at all in this recording except in the high C which Tebaldi's was even harsher but reduced in the volume in this recording. Tebaldi never had a superior technique nor breath control, she was most of the time flat and her breath control was poor that one line Callas sing in one breath Tebaldi breaks to three lines.
Di Stefano I agree with Livio Broccolino's comment. They are two spectacular sopranos, in a way differeht in technique and voice and repertoire.I like both,and I think that we should avoid comparison and supeiority of one or the other. We have to enjoy their art even though Tebaldi's voice gets into my heart deeply.
+Di Stefano May I respectfully disagree and say that I think you, at the same time, overstate Callas's attributes, gloss over her shortcomings and don't give Tebaldi her due. Your analysis of Tebaldi indicates that she had a third rate voice which I think would be challenged by most experts. The truth is that both probably sang beyond the point they should have but in that regard also I'm afraid Callas stayed around far too long with singing marked by shrillness in the upper register and terrible lack of control in terms of pitch. I'll take Maria Callas any day. She has a better voice and beautiful looking as well. She certainly knew what she was singing about. I don't understand why Renata Tebaldi is admired by so many people and I don't think someday I will change my mind on Tebaldi. But Tebaldi-worshippers can't even construct a legitimate and objective argument about why she is better than Callas.
Tebaldi was a year older than Callas. And this "Ebben" is from the Tebaldi Festival recital in 1969, four years after Callas had retired from the stage. And, yet, Tebaldi still produces the golden spinto sound that made her a legend. In 1954 Callas is already showing the withering strain that would end her prematurely, topped by a hideous high C. So there it is.

Lorenzo, I totally agree with you. I know it is a question of personal taste, but I find Tebaldi's voice allready dated. I have to admit that I never understood why people where talking about her angelic voice, I hear a matrone like sound with something in it I do not like.Some whining sound, I have the same problem with Netrebko's voice. With Callas there is incredible artistry, so many colours, well, you said it all for me allready. The voice of Callas will never sound dated, she was ahead of her times.
You listen to tebaldi's early records. She's old in this record that's why she sounds matronly, on the other hand, netrebko is just mediocre so no need to defend her

Why don´t we accept both as wonderful, as a gift from Nature? Simply put: THEY CANNOT BE COMPARED. They should be enjoyed, period. For instance, many people like beaches, the sea, etc., but I don´t enjoy them, I definitely prefer hills and mountains and rivers. So, let´s stop comparing, and let´s enjoy them BOTH. This will result in absolute respect for these two wonderful singers, who gave all they had, their wonderful voices, to all of us opera lovers.
Listen carefully........these great singers have a lot more in common than what we think devides them......they follow the composers markings to the letter....and for this.....for me they reflect each other perfectly!!!!
In my earlier years Tebaldi was my favorite and Maria Callas I didn't like her voice. I've developed my musical ear since then and no one can touch Maria. A beautiful voice is nothing if you don't put your whole soul into it. God I can't believe I couldn't see Maria Callas back then. Deanna Durban sang Beautifully with her voice..that's who Tebalti was influenced by. Caruso is my male favorite..what he puts into his voice is nothing short of magnificent glorious...Real Deal !!! It's important to develop your musical ear. When I go to a movie a concert they better put all there love into it. Maria Callas did it ... God I'm so glad I woke up. Peace everyone

What I find so amazing about these two, is the very different styles of "vocal schooling" they came from. Tebaldi was trained in the Verismo style, whereas Callas was trained in the Bel Canto "school", or style of singing. And yet, heating these 2 remarkable ladies singing this aria (an aria from the Verismo era), while Tebaldi's training in Verismo is obviously excellent for this, I find that Callas's "Bel Canto-ish" approach just adds that much more excitement and dramatic clarity to this very Verismo piece.
Doesn't matter what style of vocal schooling they studied ....you have to be able to master more then your breathing. Hate love sadness you name it and Maria is the true Artist she makes you feel deep. Soul Gutts ....we are blessed to here her soul and when she sang she believed it. Like Judy Garland is the real deal and her voice wasn't always up to par but this women changed my whole outlook on the entertainment business I've never seen a performer move me like her. Barbra Streisand I liked in her younger years. That's the bottom line folks ...Music has to be more then a beautiful voice. To get up on the stage and sing without any technology. Old school from the past.... people.....alot of our Opera singers today shouldn't be on stage. Are there any good teachers left and there traditions. It is like our food all the nutrients are not all there. I have a voice that is more than Just Beautiful but I wasn't sure what I believed in this life and needed more life experience. I've had people pick me up off the stage and couldn't stop telling me how good my voice made them feel in the brain.It was music I wrote as I was learning the guitar. Writing about only what I new saw so far at that point in my life. My guitar playing was very new basic cords you can sing to but people loved how I made it sound. Two different Styles and voices wonderful interoretation
La Tabaldi è un monumento di inarrivabile grandezza. La Callas, invece, con la sua voce viene, ti afferra le spalle, ti scuote e ti fa sobbalzare. Ora non saprei stabilire quale dei due soprani sia migliore, credo siano due Titani, due giganti diversi e non è neanche salubre provare a stabilire quale possa vincere in una impobabile competizione. Ma so per certo che il suono della voce di Maria Callas riesce toccare le corde più profonde dell'anima.
Callas, to me, does none of the things you say she does. Perhaps she touches your soul. She does not touch mine, whereas Tebaldi could not be more moving. One thing I wish Callas fans would do is to stop talking in generalities (touching the soul, reaching the inner heart of the music). These are just parroted phrases without meaning, and they fo not apply to whole world. This is the reverential, revisionist “Callas is always better!” view, which was not the case during her brief career. In some roles and arias, yes, Callas was the greatest. For me, Wally? No.

Tebaldi is a very nice voice, but something you forget a couple of seconds after hearing it. Callas, on the other hand, is unearthly, her voice will haunt you for ever and even a child will recognize it after first hearing.

Personally I prefer Tebaldi in this aria, due to the sheer beauty of her voice and amazing vocal control, but Callas has that unexplicable way of going straight into our hearts with her unique voice. Let us stay with both and enjoy their unmatched singing.
Callas is a superb stage performer displaying deep emotion. But Renata has the superior voice. Again, it's a question of taste. Every ear has different taste.

I think we both recognize that these two great artists had their strong points and some shortcomings. In the final analysis we are dealing with a question of artistry that is always subjective in terms of our appreciation of it. You are taken with Ms Callas's technique and I am taken with the beauty of Ms Tebaldi's voice. On that basis you would rather listen to Ms Callas and I to Ms Tebaldi. But aren't we lucky that we don't have to make that choice I.e. choosing one to the exclusion of the other. We can enjoy both. Maria Callas is more then a technique she delivers the emotions like your suppose. I heard no great depth in emotions from Tebaldi and use to love her for sometime until Maria Callas she loves her singing... you could have a bad voice and still please the audience with your passion and depth where it should be. Also Maria Callas has a Beautiful voice not always what I thought was the kind of singing I cared for until I grew up and learned that a performer has to love life and I hear it in Maria...screw the technique

La Tebaldi è scelta qui in una tardiva incisione del 1969, la Callas nella sua unica lettura di quest'aria, in disco, nel 1954. 15 anni di differenza per esprimere un giudizio su un paragone improponibile. La Callas in studio, e nel 1954 anno di grazia, poteva permettersi dei giochi e dei virtuosismi assolutamente non riproducibili in live. La tebaldi quest'aria in live l'ha cantata per tutta la carriera e non ci sono trucchi. oltretutto l'interpretazione della tebaldi, è impostata secondo la tradizione canonica delle cantanti che quest'opera avevano interpretato: voce granitica, freddezza del personaggio coniugata all'inflessibilità caratteriale, e cedimento al sentimento amoroso senza abbandono romantico ma con contegno tipico delle donne del posto in cui Wally è ambientata. L'interpretazione della Callas, sempre e comunque di altissimo livello, non è in linea con la tradizione del personaggio, e regala a Wally troppe leggerezze non conformi al carattere del personaggio. ma è un documento imprescindibile nella discografia callasiana perché, che piaccia o no, la Callas è un mostro do bravura e di sensibilità e la sua lettura dell'aria ha aperto la strada alla lettura della Caballè e della Scotto, un po' anch'esse fuori dell'alveo tradizionale del personaggio ma anch'esse suggestive. La Tebaldi, invece, è Wally in ogni frase, in ogni accento. La rotondità dei suoni e la fermezza degli stessi sono speculari al personaggio, che "come rupe d'Oetz" è fermo nei suoi voleri. Per la Tebaldi sceglierei come anno l'incisione con Basile del 1950, quella live alla Scala (molto disturbata acusticamente) del 7 dicembre 53 con Giulini, oppure Buenos Aires sempre 1953, o ancora quella al Bell Telephone Hour del 1955 a New York.
Sandro Bruno, la Callas si poteva permettere giochi e virtuosismi sia in studio che in teatro e non usava alcun trucco. Se cantava l'Armida di Rossini o la Medea o "Sempre libera" dal vivo, non aveva necessita' di….

Onestamente la Callas nel repertorio verista mi sembra fatichi sempre un po': più brava negli incredibili sopracuti del belcanto che in questo Si acuto che sembra più un urlo. Colpisce invece l'aderenza sincera al testo e la tristezza struggente che riesce ad infondere al suo canto, grande attrice anche con la voce, ma forse come dice il nostro competente commentatore, poco aderente al personaggio dell'opera che al contrario rimane fiero e impassibile

Rispondo a Fabrizio Maria Garzi per ricordare che, al contrario di quanto afferma, la Tebaldi dal 1964 al 1973 non ha cantato "le solite ...." ma ha cantato Simon boccanegra, Adriana, tosca, bohème, chenier, Wally, fanciulla del west, Andrea Chenier, Falstaff, Otello, Gioconda, Mefistofele, Manon Lescaut, abitualmente. Con autentici trionfi. E paragonare due incisioni a 15 anni di distanza non è proprio il massimo dell'imparzialità. Inoltre, fino al 1960 l'interpretazione live dell'aria, in concerto live, era presente nel repertorio concertistico della tebaldi che, comprensibilmente più fresca, poteva concedere non solo maggiori sfumature sui piani e sui pianissimo, ma soprattutto un si naturale acuto lungo e stratosferico che qui, nel 1968 ovviamente non può esserci perché, comprensibilmente, era nella parabola discendente del suo astro canoro.... Ma nonostante il si naturale corto e sforzato l'aria è davvero eccellente

La mia preferenza per la Tebaldi è dovuta a una mia personale emotività e gusto musicale, ma detto questo non si può non riconoscere la grandezza della Callas, che pur non emozionandomi visceralmente mi incanta con le sue straordinarie sfumature e idee musicali...
Inguaribile Romantico. E strano... perché è proprio la capacità a rispettare le sfumature scritte dal compositore, (che sono si difficili technicamente, perciò non tutte le rispettano), che rende giustizia al canto che con l'anima si sente. Perfezione del canto, le sfrumature = sogno di tutti i cantante ! Perché pura espressione, grande emozione.

E' vero, come sempre ma c'é un ma... non giudico la freschezza vocale e neppure il valore del canto... dico solo che per me qualunque aria canti la Callas, passa quel brivido che fa intendere che ascoltiamo la leggenda... e non dimentichiamo che mai nessuna riuscì come lei a cantare quasi tutto il repertorio operistico passando da Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, fino a Rossini in serate quasi contigue... Ho ascoltato una prima Tebaldi nella sua famosa Giovanna d'Arco, dove riuscì ibene anche nelle agilità... ma poi solo canto spianato e preferibilmente verdiano, salvo Tosca ed Adriana. Una grandissima, ma oggettivamente settoriale contrariamente alla Caballé che cantava davvero un grande repertorio con perizia e voce stupenda. Almeno per la prima parte della carriera.
A volte è accaduto il contrario. La registrazione della Callas era molto disturbata, per far risaltare quella della Tebaldi. Sono comunque, d'accordo i confronti devono essere corretti!
Pur sapendo della bravura della Callas, sono d'accordo nel dover fare i confronti alla pari. La Tebaldi è stata anche lei una grande soprano. Ribadisco "Grande Soprano".

La Tebaldi all'epoca ha avuto maggior successo di pubblico e di critica (questo vuol dire che la sua voce e il suo canto " in cantavano"). Per me però la Callas è stata di un altro " pianeta", un caso a parte, perché ha rivoluzionato il mondo della lirica , grazie anche ad un talento e ad una voce unica.

La Tebaldi è stata una grandissima e penso che abbia avuto più successo della Callas, anche perché la sua carriera è stata molto più lunga, ma quello che è riuscita a trasmettere con il canto la Callas supera ogni tipo di confronto!
Vero la carriera della Tebaldi è durata quasi trent'anni forse più. Diciamo che la Callas nei pochi anni di splendore ,anche perché è stata meno costante, ha trasmesso qualcosa di irripetibile forse per un soprano. Anche perché come timbro di voce pochissime lo hanno bello come la Callas. Solo la Tebaldi e la De Los Angeles. La Freni bellissima voce o anche la Sutherland ma non ce la hanno così bella come queste tre.
@@andreaottelli9734, non possiamo contare con le dita gli anni di una carriera e vedere chi l'ha avuta piu' lunga. Sono i risultati quelli che contano. La Callas in ogni modo gia' dal 1938 cominciava ad affacciarsi. Ha cantato fino al 59,quasi venti anni ma con un repertorio che andava da Wagner alla Sonnambula di Bellini passando per tutto il Verdi che contava e le acrobazie di Lucia e Armida...e sopratutto Norma e Medea. La Tebaldi si e' seduta dopo un po su un programma carrieristico composto di sole Tosche, Chenier, Boheme e qualche Otello ancora. Non diro' "spartiti facili", ma certo davano assai meno problemi... per quanto se alla Maria ballavano delle note alla Renata restavano fisse e senza vibrazione. Con il bel timbro ha mascherato molto. La Callas era allo scoperto.

Non mi pare corretto impostare il confronto in questo modo. L'esecuzione della Tebaldi proviene dall'incisione completa diretta da Cleva, datata 1969, mentre quella della Callas da un recital diretto da Serafin nel 1954. E' evidente già dalle date che la Tebaldi da tempo non si trovava all'apice delle sue possibilità vocali, mentre la Callas (in teoria) dovrebbe essere pienamente in forma. Chi voglia avere un'idea più chiara della magia della Tebaldi in questa pagina ascolti esecuzioni della prima metà degli anni Cinquanta, non questa.

María Callas impuso la actuación dramática con su inigualable voz, ella cantaba con dolor y transmitía es dramatismo al público, algo que Tibaldi nunca quiso trasmitir, por que no era una actriz de la ópera, solo cantaba y yá. Era muy rígida como muchas tantas y La Divina llevaba la ópera a una catarsis magistral. Como ella ya no habrá, nadie más.

La Callas does have more vocal followers and is rightfully a darling of the media. However, so long as there are true and honest cognoscenti of great singing such as you La Tebaldi will not be forgotten.
+Livio Broccolino There is not harshness at all in this recording except in the high C which Tebaldi's was even harsher but reduced in the volume in this recording. Tebaldi never had a superior technique nor breath control, she was most of the time flat and her breath control was poor that one line Callas sing in one breath Tebaldi breaks to three lines.

I agree with Livio Broccolino's comment. They are two spectacular sopranos, in a way differeht in technique and voice and repertoire.I like both,and I think that we should avoid comparison and supeiority of one or the other. We have to enjoy their art even though Tebaldi's voice gets into my heart deeply.
+Di Stefano May I respectfully disagree and say that I think you, at the same time, overstate Callas's attributes, gloss over her shortcomings and don't give Tebaldi her due. Your analysis of Tebaldi indicates that she had a third rate voice which I think would be challenged by most experts. The truth is that both probably sang beyond the point they should have but in that regard also I'm afraid Callas stayed around far too long with singing marked by shrillness in the upper register and terrible lack of control in terms of pitch. I'll take Maria Callas any day. She has a better voice and beautiful looking as well. She certainly knew what she was singing about. I don't understand why Renata Tebaldi is admired by so many people and I don't think someday I will change my mind on Tebaldi. But Tebaldi-worshippers can't even construct a legitimate and objective argument about why she is better than Callas.

Tebaldi was a year older than Callas. And this "Ebben" is from the Tebaldi Festival recital in 1969, four years after Callas had retired from the stage. And, yet, Tebaldi still produces the golden spinto sound that made her a legend. In 1954 Callas is already showing the withering strain that would end her prematurely, topped by a hideous high C. So there it is.

Lorenzo, I totally agree with you. I know it is a question of personal taste, but I find Tebaldi's voice allready dated. I have to admit that I never understood why people where talking about her angelic voice, I hear a matrone like sound with something in it I do not like.Some whining sound, I have the same problem with Netrebko's voice. With Callas there is incredible artistry, so many colours, well, you said it all for me allready. The voice of Callas will never sound dated, she was ahead of her times.
You listen to tebaldi's early records. She's old in this record that's why she sounds matronly, on the other hand, netrebko is just mediocre so no need to defend her
