Your firing rate is based on a finite number of projectiles capable of being displayed on the screen at any one time. Firing normally you'll get the full spread, but careful use of turbo fire will make your shot pattern narrow down to a straight line of extremely rapid fire. Only takes a minute of experimentation to get the hang of it and it's endlessly useful. Mow through the trash mobs with spread fire, then focus fire on the harder enemies using turbo for super quick kill.
We all know that pain of losing the spread gun. Though I always had a fondness for the machine gun/ rapid fire combo. It was ALOT easier on the thumbs!
