It’s remarkable how these gurus refuse to consult people who know what they’re doing, do everything wrong, and then act like it’s inspirational and groundbreaking that they encountered challenges that would have been easily avoidable if they’d done any preparation at all. They’re masters of rediscovering things that are widely known.

She didn't know she was supposed to pack lunch for a day hike, she didn't break in her boots, she complained because the trail didn't end right at the door to her hotel, and she quit after three days because she got blisters. Then acted like she was stranded in the middle of nowhere when she was at most an hour's drive/two hours' bus ride from San Sebastian (sounds like she quit at Markina). I find this to be the direct opposite of inspirational tbh. I wouldn't believe this was real if I hadn't heard it myself.

There enough to take some insta photos and gather some sort of mediocre "inspirational" story where she had an epiphany. I don't think she's had to do a lot of work in her life for what she wants, so met with real work she barely attempts.

The Camino is sacred and taken seriously by people. It is not a “vacation”. It is meant to be a spiritual pilgrimage. Being “bougie” on the Camino is a slap in the face of centuries of serious pilgrimage.

  • @AMoniqueOcampo

This latest update from Rach really got me mad. I'm Catholic and listening to her refer to this spiritual pilgrimage as just a physical challenge feels insulting. And it just gets worse with how she complained about every little thing. What exactly was she expecting?
The Camino is supposed to be a humbling journey. So many people from around the world go on pilgrimage in this way. It's basically a cottage industry.

"I am not a person who fails." Well that may be true - if you don't finish anything, you can't fail. Of course, if you don't fail, you don't learn, and if you don't learn, you don't grow. "I am not a person who wants to be better today than I was yesterday." What an inspiration!

I have a vivid memory of my niece, when she was first learning to walk, and trying to take on a small incline in the backyard. She would fall, laugh, pick herself up, and try again. She must have done this sequence 30 times until she was able to make it all the way up the slope.
That's the way kids learn-- they try and fail. And laugh and get up again, until they "get" it. The difference between kids & adults, IMO, is that kids don't think of falling down as "failing"-- it's just part of the process of learning.

I've hiked the Camino De Santiago. The most popular/most walked route is around 500 miles (aka about 800 km), and takes the average person around 30 days plus or minus 3 days. Younger, faster, and/or fitter people can do the entire Camino in around 20 days. She's exaggerating from the get go.
Hiking wise, I would say the Camino is a walk in the park compared to similarly long trails like the Colorado Trail, which I've also have done. Also much easier than the portion of the AT that is in the White Mountains of NH.
Edit to add: Since you stay in hostels, churches, and the like, and camping is actually frowned upon, you don't have to pack much. A couple changes of clothes, water bottles, a hiking guide, and a few extras. This makes it easier than many other hikes where you have to carry your shelter and means of making food--definitely adds significant weight.

If she found out Dave was living a double life, and it was so bad and deceitful that she needed to leave, but did not fight to protect her kids by agreeing to 50/50 custody all while knowing his addiction issues…that makes me so sad and sick. Her kids were put in danger with an addict, and their mom knew and didn’t keep them safe. I think pancake gate is proof of how dave was when abusing substances…it was probably really bad off camera. I think the stuff that goes on in the Hollis household is probably pretty dark. I dont think they wanted his issues public, so she acquiesced with the custody arrangement. That is not okay. “Protecting” the kids by not telling them about Dave’s issues was lying and not real protection. I think this is going to get worse from here for her with all the unresolved issues. They need serious help and intervention.

i feel like rachel holds some resentment towards dave as she got married young and he was older, had more life experience and maybe she felt robbed of having fun 20s and exploring who she is but can't verbalize it properly. bc to me she's having a typical 'woman in her 40s who doesn't vibe with gender roles imposed on her but only knows corporate feminism' crisis. the way she pretends to be into the things her boo is interested in reminds me of myself 😬 it's like she's not sure of herself and doesn't do any independent soul searching, it's always something that's coming from someone else's influence. what a sad life... i hope at least she's treating her kids right because i can't imagine the turmoil

    • @louhortonsculpture

Yes. All this. And her mom had to take on many “masculine” roles and Rach was raised in a conservative religious household. So seeing her mom buck gender roles while being told to believe in them probably gave her some cognitive dissonance.
Maybe this explains why Rach was so mad about the FunFetti birthday cake! Mom was “failing” at providing and homemaking at the same time.
So glad she had some much of the best food on the Camino though! 💁🏽‍♀️

    My take on Dave’s addiction:
We all clouds clearly tell when he started abusing stimulants. I believe Heidi was the gateway that led to that particular drug abuse. I think she introduced him to that world. The fitness competitions come to my mind. And how he admitted to not “doing the work” that was required to be in these type of body competitions. Drugs are used as a solution/ aid in achieving required results and they may have gotten desperate enough to go that route. I have always thought that Rachel didn’t speak on his alcoholism (while he was alive) due to the fact that SHE is clearly an alcoholic as well, and she knew that HE knew that as. When Dave was alive, he could call her out and say to her that she had no room to talk. I think both of them saw each other in a delusional manner. Rachel accepted Dave’s alcoholism because she too had/has the same issues and he gave her what she wanted:a financial start. Content to push out to the masses. If he was so bad off in his addiction that they divorced, why did she let her kids stay with him? She sure didn’t mind dropping them off with him and then jetting off with boo thing. If she were the least bit concerned, then she would have at the very least stayed around so she could be close if anything were to go wrong. Was it because she wanted to get rid of her kids so she could do what SHE wanted while they were with their dad, Dave Hollis? Funny how she won’t say his name. He existed . He mattered. He didn’t die so these grifters could have their “epiphanies”. Regardless of his faults, he was still a “human” who had family members who loved him. Such a shame Rachel couldn’t see that.
Also, Rachel clearly is “friends” with people who she can use. Just like she has only dated or married men who have all of there resources. It’s not a coincidence.

I am around the 1 hour marker and I am seething learning just how much what she did is NOT the Camino experience in any way or form. BUT. I have to say that large brim hats are way better than baseball caps and the likes when hiking, you want something that can shield your face from various angles and protect your neck too. A giant beach sunhat is going to be awkward and out of place, but a lightweight hat that won't trap the sweat and has an all-around brim is very good for hiking.

How gross that she rewrites history and disses Dave and his issues and writes herself as perfect, as usual. They both had problems with alcohol and were lying to their audience for years. And how sick that they are allowed to adopt a kid who was probably removed from bio parents due to substance abuse. If you're rich and white, it's all good! She is SUCH a liar.

About it not being "traditional" to walk the Camino in stages/parts..... I live in Europe and I have a friend that hikes a lot. Like a couple of times a week she'll go and just walk for half a day or even at times the whole weekend for 4 years now. And even she is choosing to walk the Camino in stages....!!! She has walked a part last year and she is planning to walk other parts of it in the coming years.
And I have heard other people here in Europe talk about walking part of it and later on sometimes even after years walk another part.
It's just another way for her to tell people she is special because she is doing things differently. While many people do the exact same thing as she did.....

I’m like 3 pages in and I’m thinking that this woman is utterly obnoxious and smug- So far I’ve learnt she has tons of friends, has (or had) a hunky husband that she smooches a lot, works out even if she’s spent 15 hours with her closest girlfriends hanging out… I’ve come out of this thinking I was worse than when I came in and that’s only 3 pages in.
