When they can get Tropical Freeze, Mario Wonder, and PoP Lost Crown (3 of the best looking sidescrollers on the Switch which completely annihilate Contra Galuga graphically) to run at 60 fps this game is clearly terribly optimized and a lazy port
@@jermainewright2556 Anyways. Konami just sent a patch update. It's running pretty smooth and no stutters. For a side scroller, 60fps is not really that needed though.
Great review, Vic...really hope they can patch the Switch version. I don't mind playing it on my Series X or PS5, but like yourself, I'd prefer to play this one on Switch. I'm an 80s-90s kid, so Contra is just one of those games that makes me think Nintendo.

Same. The mind of a young man's memory was so sharp then. Hard corps was a very good game. I would say that was actually the pinnacle of the series. I kinda didn't like the later levels towards the end but other than that, it was great

Thanks for that Vic. It's too bad about the Nintendo version as I would prefer to play it there. More often than not, like you said, if you have another console get it there instead, which I find to be true if a game is releasing on all platforms, the Switch version typically won't cut it. Not in this day and age. Thankfully, I have the other consoles too and can even play it on the PS Portal if I wanted, which would be NICE.
Sounds like the Bloodstained situation. The Switch version ran poorly and had input lag so I was ready to give up on it. Luckily, I gave the Xbox version a try and loved it. So with this one, I'll just go straight to the Xbox.
Bro you still review video games?! I used to watch you on TV like 20 years ago with that angry little Italian guy! Happy to see you still doing your thing! PEACE
It can't even consistently maintain 30, which is more the problem, though I agree that 60 FPS would be preferable for a game like this for control response. It hitches and skips below the 30 FPS target regularly causing pauses and delayed input, and subsequent unfair hits.
Also I would recommend using 8bitdo Ultimate controller for the Switch with the docking station for the controller connected to Nintendo Switch dock. It makes a lot of difference for me at least when playing games that otherwise feel less responsive via Nintendo’s Pro controller or even the joy-cons.
yeah I heard folks saying the switch version wasn't the optimal way to play... definitely noticed a bit of that in the demo. luckily the mrs. and I own a series s and it runs just fine over there! I'm definitely loving this one, they took all the different elements introduced in the later sequels and threw them all into a blender and that's what we got! also the little easter egg with the konami code was the cherry on top! hoping konami will give them the keys to some of their other IPs like gradius or something, would love to see this treatment given to THAT series!
I've been very excited to get my hands on this new Contra. But, there's been a couple of snags I had with it almost immediately. I mostly enjoy the style this game has, however, the overall art direction is a bit too busy/noisy. With my Stargardt's, I tended to have a problem following some of the action and lost track of projectiles getting muddled by the backgrounds. Also there is this strange perspective shift camera swing you can see most noticeably @ 5:31 that gives me motion sickness. Here's hoping for some QoL and accessibility updates along with the framerate increase, because I did enjoy the core gameplay.
we need a new Gradius game and its been 2 decades since Gradius V... this reimagine Contra yet another reference and usage from Gradius that literally a possible canon on both game series.
I think I will do my 1st game review on contra operation galuga. And this inspired me. Granted I hope to reach this level of quality. But yeah it will be a nice challenge for me.
Why didn't they just do 2D pixel art, it looks better especially when they're rushing the devs to make these mediocre 3D models. You said Way Forward made it, I almost guarantee that Konami said no pixel art, Way Forward mastered 2D, they probably had a great idea for the look when they got this project. I grew up with Contra and played Contra III so much, but for my money, Blazing Chrome on PS4/Switch really did update that style of run n gun to perfection. I'd give them both a 10/10, but Blazing Chrome surprised me at how good it could be.
How they didn’t add online co-op is bullshit, most of us who appreciate Contra are married with families etc and like to catch up with the people living away etc. The input lag is an issue though, I’m playing it on XSX and notice it as well.
I agree. They should have made it with pixel art and 60 fps. I might try it but I have the feeling it won't be better than my favorite contra games: hard corps on the genesis and uprising on ps3

Thats disappointing to hear about the Switch version. Wayforward does have history doing great non pixel side scrolling games as they did the DuckTales Remaster and that was absolutely fantastic. Hopefully they can put out a patch!
