    I miss talk shows like this, where the audience isn't pre-pumped like idiots on laughing gas or queued to laugh at the host. Some of Cavett's jokes fall flat and we're actually allowed to realize that.

    • @interfusor
      @interfusor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Cavett was all about the guest which in a talk show should be the focus; not the host. And I resent the pretense of variety that Fallon and Corden do as well as the 30 suffering minutes about politics like Colbert and Myers do. Conan is alright though, but Graham Norton is in my opinion the greatest talk show host currently.

    As a little kid, there was a child-like quality I latched onto about him... even when he was being filthy. First thing I ever saw was Bustin' Loose, and he stood out -- I was probably 7 or 8, but he made an impression. Always loved him and that made me a fan of his Saturday Morning Kid's Show "Pryor's Place" which was odd, but there was an innocence about him. As I grew older, I saw Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling... and I thought he was amazing, considering what he lived through. That film is somewhat maligned, but he's great in it. He didn't deserve MS, and it's sad he went out like that... but he's a legend.

    Most interesting thing about Pryor is hardly how Murphy was influenced. Cavett ain't Jimmy Fallon. He's not gushing all over his guest like the biggest fan-friend.

    • @cordellsenior9935
      @cordellsenior9935 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fallon's the king of celebrity fawning to a pathetic level. He's the worst and Kimmel is the Prince In Waiting. Conan and Cordon are the Dukes and Lords of suck'n up and I'm missing names of at least 3 more (Ellen too). Cavett's long form format always made for a better interview of the same talent pool, but Carson's show and fluff format ruled and all these desk jockeys have been poorly imitating Johnny ever since. Cavett, Merv, Mike, live audience shows had different format and yet got a more relaxed, insightful, and personal interview. Johnny was great but People RARELY got heavy or insightful on The Tonight Show.

      That's valid, but don't forget...at this point in time, Eddie Murphy was arguably the biggest star in the WORLD at the time. People really don't grasp that...he was right there with Michael Jackson, who was basically a recluse at this point.

    Out here in California in the 80's our drive in theater's in the day were swap meets, i use to think that the white screen was showing a movie only we couldn't see it because it was sunny, too much light. i thought that if i climbed up to the screen i could press my face to the screen and use my hands to cover the light, then i could see what movie they were playing.

    I remember the first time I even became aware of Richard Pryor was way back when Stir Crazy was first released with him and Gene Wilder. These two were absolute comedy geniuses. After that, I got to see Silver Streak. It's just sad that we lost him some time ago. Those two were great together, like Abbott and Costello.
