This is great information. I did know the basic difference between the two, but didn’t realize the extent of the schooling. Thank you for these videos.... they really are informative, including Steve’s comment about who has bigger student loans 😂
Either an Optometrist or a General Ophthalmologist. I am referred a lot of patients who have double vision from Ophthalmologists, so I would recommend starting with an Optometrist.
A lot of what is said in this video is true, however the differences between the two jobs are not limited to just what they can and can't do, it is also distinguished by their clinical training. Ophthalmologists remain firstly medical doctors (physicians). Therefore, their job is not limited to the eye and they have the same responsibilities as other physicians over their patients whole health. And they are not just surgeons, some are specialized in emergency medicine and work in ER, others in neurology or oncology, etc. And also, ophthalmologists rarely prescribe lenses and glasses.
I did explain the difference in training, but even so, Ophthalmologist spend 90% of their residency training being flooded with eye disease and surgeries, and information that you learn and don't use is slowly lost. You could ask any cardiologist questions about particular eye diseases unrelated to the heart, and they'll let you know that they'll refer to the expertise of an Optometrist or an Ophthalmologist. (I know because I have) Similar is true for optometrists as well. In that, we must care for the patient as a whole like emegencies not only related to the eyes, but their whole body and in all diseases. Just as ophthalmologists do, we refer the patients out to other doctors who specialize in the area needed to best care for that patient.
Hi im a kid from the phillipinrs i have bsd eye sight and some times my fight eye gets blind like theiddle part of my sight in the right eye is just collor grey like its blind but i can see the sides can you explain what is that im so scared im gonna be blind crying 😭 like im just a kid im not even i teen ager i mean im about to turn 13 but still im still young i dont want to be blind but if i become blind im gonna accept it
I wish that I could see your eyes in person, so my best recommendation is to see your local eye doctor to get those questions answered. Because there could be a few simple things that can look like what you explained, and they are not something that you need to worry about. Sorry I could not be of more help, but keep up hope because you are too young to worry about these things.
Lol, there are so many other terms for Eye Doctors, and oculist is one of them. It seems to be used for both Optometrists and Ophthalmologists interchangeably. The definition is someone who diagnoses, management, and treats ocular diseases, which is both!
First, I recommend seeing your eye doctor to make sure that this is simple floaters and not something more scary. But at this time time is the best cure. Also staying well hydrated helps too
So if I have a preexisting condition like diabetes I should visit the opthalmologist over the optometrist? Guessing cause that's what I recall my endocrinologist said to do.
Both optometrists and ophthalmologists are equally competent to monitor your eyes. The only reason I would send a patient to an Opthalmologist is if they needed an injection or laser treatment to treat uncontrolled diabetic retinopathy. Great question, though!!
Similar to most other countries. Here in the US, the schooling is much more extensive. We take care of about 80% of all primary eye care needs, so our need to prescribe is great. We don't have free reign to prescribe all meds, just those that are applicable for most eye related issues.
Great video, thank you! Is it true that ophthalmologists can do everything optometrists can? Can they also diagnose systemic illnesses and sell eye glasses?
Yes, they can, but most don't. They can have an Optometrist on staff to take care of that portion, so they can focus on more medical. But same for Optometrist, we can hire an Opthalmologist to supplement our scope/coverage for our patients. I never wanted to do surgery, so I decided that my main focus would be diagnosing and managing ocular disease naturally and only recommend surgery as last case scenario.
Thanks for the information! Then why the optometrists are not doctors! And why the ophthalmologist have to study med and optometrist don’t! And why ophthalmologist looks better? May you also provide the difference in their salary?
Great questions!! In the US, Optometrists are doctors. Just like dentists, physical therapist, chiropractors... are also doctor/physicians in their field of study. As far as looks... I'm not sure if you are talking about how they dress, conduct or what, but that is personal choice not profession, lol. As far as salary, there are many Optometrist that make more than Ophthalmologist, but that's based on choice again. Many Optometrists are happy with just simple eye exams, whereas others specialize which can make them very valuable. The cost of surgery will always be more than a general eye exam. More optometrist are focusing on eye exams, whereas more Ophthalmologists are focusing on eye surgeries. I hope this helps, Aya!
It depends on a lot of variables. Like are you in a private practice or commercial, how many patients are you willing to see in a day, where are you located, is it an OD practice or OD/MD practice, do you own or lease the practice, how many practices do you own/lease... If you were to search how much an Optometrist could make in a year, it could start around $80,000, but then skies are the limit, but I will tell you that it is the best profession that you could choose, at least that's my opinion! Hope this helps, and good luck in school!!
@@mohammadhasaanshahid6294 Yes, drops and oral medications. Don't worry, if you are studying Optometry, then tighten your seat belt because pharmacology is going to be your favorite class during the first 2 years (insert sarcastic tone)!! In the US, we are fully trained to diagnose and manage all ocular diseases. We just leave the major surgeries to the Ophthalmologist.
Lol, it depends on what you need and when you need it. There are things that I would only want an Opthalmologist do to my eyes, and there are things that I would only want an Optometrist for. We have distinctions for a reason. It just works🤷🏽♂️
Sir why from my eyes keechi ki coming out in every minute ... And my both eyes palak is doing up and down in seconds ,why is it happening so sir...?...
I'm not sure what you are asking. 😕 But if what you are experiencing is out of the ordinary, then I recommend that you see an eye doctor. You don't need to have a full eye exam when you are experiencing something new. You can just ask a question, let them look at your eyes through their microscope, and give you an answer based on your complaints and what they see.
Depends on the surgery. In some states, Optometrists are able to perform LASIK procedures, but most refractive surgery are done by Ophthalmologist who specializes in refractive surgery. Hope this helps!
It looks like a lot of people did not know that the wrong eyedrop for the wrong eye condition even pink eyes could lead to blindness which may not be the optometrist fault as they are not only a doctor of eyeglasses because they do not perform eye surgeries!
Again, not sure what you are trying to say. In the US, Optometrist are usually taking care of eye infections, foreign bodies, and many other emergencies before Ophthalmologists ever need to get involved, and we have been doing this for many years because we are not causing patients to go blind. But both Ophthalmologists and Optometrists work very well together to cover all eye related emergencies.
Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and repent you shall be saved give it a try I mean accepting Jesus is a great thing cause if you do your safe from hell you might think hell isn't real but it is and heaven isn't boring ppl think heaven is boring but in fact, you can fly in heaven accept Jesus as your Lord and savior repent and always remember God does Love you.
I see an optometrist only because I haven't been diagnosed with any problems that would require the ophthalmologist. Yay!!
Great! Let's keep it that way!!
Thank you. Very informative. 🙏🏽
Thanks for watching.

I'm just looking for an eye Dr to see what's wrong with my left eye, I can't see . So can you tell me which Dr do I see before I can't see at all
As an Optometrist, I would recommend seeing an optometrist, and then they would recommend an Ophthalmologist if necessary.
Thanks so much for the awesome info!

Awesome!! Good luck! It is such a fun medical professionals.
Same here. Where do you study? I'm just going to get admission so i would love to know your eye experience
I don't know what to decide b/n optiometry and ansteshia...can u help me decide???
I'd say that Optometry has much less stress, but I could be a little bias!
Hey Doc... I'm currently doing biochemistry. can I somehow take the optometry route in future ?
For sure! I had a few classmates who were Biochem majors!! Hope to see you at an OD conference in the future.
Thanks Doc. really wanna do optometry
Great explanatory division but I have a question....where does the "oculist" profession reference enter here ?:) Thanks!

We would have to go to medical school and complete a 3 year residency just as if we never went to optometry school to begin with.
