This channel has really sparked my interest in cichlids; if I can convince my partner of another tank, I'm sure that South American is the way I would go.
My personal favorites are the Red terrors and the Red tiger. I have a breeding pair of Red terrors at the moment. Absolutely beautiful. Salvinis are amazing as well.
I have kept most of the fish on the list and my number one is definitely my Chocolate Cichlid. Awesome colour, awesome personality and peaceful. He is a gentle giant.

Great list! I have Rams currently with my geo tapajos and severums and it is working great. I have a backup tank just in case but everyone gets along well so far.
I had a tiger Oscar as my first Cichlid and they are definitely one of my favorites I also like the apistogramma but I would have to say my absolute favorite is the electric blue acara. So a beautiful fish eat too keep and works well with most other fish. Currently have 8 in my 75.

Where do you source your south american cichlids from? I am new to the hobby and am located in the Indy area. I recently lost my favorite fish, an EBA that I purchased from my LFS 6 months ago. After talking with other hobbyist in the area I have heard that the fish from this particular LFS are not of the best quality. I plan to start a 125 or 150 gal south american cichlid tank in the future and want to ensure that I invest in top quality fish this time. I specifically am interested in geophagus varieties and EBAs.
Discus is a maintenance hazard specially the hybrids or tank bred discus. Their food which consists of heart mix really creates daily water change schedule which is really hectic.
I'm a beginner with a 36 gallon bowed tank. Oscar's do look amazing. But I feel like when I go to the stores, it's all the same 7 or 8 fish unless I get into african cyclids which might be nice in the future. I do have 2 blue electrics, a sylvini (I might have mispeled), and some firemouths. But other than that, in keeping a smaller tank lots of these fish seem all kind of just normal gray looking. With small cyclids and small tanks there aren't too many options?
I currently have my first Electric Blue Acara and it has become one of my favorite fish. I had a question about their behavior. My Acara is not aggressive, but I have seen him a few times hover above my Jack Dempsey and strike him in the head. I thought I saw the same thing happen in one of you videos with your Electric blue Acara. Is that a characteristic behavior of these fish? I had never seen that before. Thank you

Glad you didn't put the rams on your list only as an honorable mention because my girlfriend has 2 German blue rams and they literally pulled a Thanos on her 65 gallon. A male and female ger.an blue ram pair killed 22 of her fish in about 9 days, ottos, Cory's, swordtails, tetras, guppies all murdered and savagely! By day zero aggressive behavior towards any of rhe fish buy by morning dead fish fins chewed off no eyes ever! I moved the 2 killers into their own 29 gallon tank after my girlfriend was heartbroken and ready to quit the hobby. Anyway enjoy the videos as always keep up the good work

I love the regular Blue Acara too! I think it'd fit nicely in either of your American Cichlid tanks
They do get bullied the most. I have one with My convicts, they dont bother him as much as my auratus and turkana jewel do

My favorite cichlid are the Green terror and the Oscar fish.
So hard to pick a favourite as I love most South American Cichlids however the Red Terror is up there for me. And the Black ram
