  • Do you know where your meat comes from?
Matt Allwright and Chris Hollins follow the men and women working on the frontline to protect the nation from rogue restaurants and poisonous food.
Food outlets have to follow very strict rules to ensure that we don’t end up eating contaminated helpings. Making sure the owners of restaurants, cafes and takeaways up and down the country follow the rules is a massive nationwide challenge - led by The Food Inspectors.
In todays episode Matt visits The Port of Felixstowe - more than 40 per cent of Britain’s import export trade goes through the port including five million tonnes of food. Suffolk Coastal Port Health Authority’s inspectors are responsible for checking the foods which arrive including products from Japan, produced near the Fukishima nuclear disaster, which are tested for radiation and a huge consignment of chilli powder from India.

Well... As long as it's meat, you can't taste a difference and it's not dangerous, it's not that bad. But they lie to costumers!
I'd guess that's a one time thing, that is happening again and again... Nobody keeps horses for food. That's stupid. Cows make more sense in every way. But rich people like to ride them and play polo. When they die, some cheap industrial meat sellers take them to mix the meat with beef to save a few bucks...
It's not constant, but happens again and again... Which is why it's hard ti stop this practice.

    • @olivierdastein2604

They lie to consumers *and* you've no idea of where the meat comes from, how it was handled, if it was safe, etc... For all you know, it could come from rotting carcasses that should have been incinerated, for instance. And note that horse meat is consumed in many countries, and also can be used for pet food. And you can't sell the meat of an animal that just died. Horses are butchered to produce the meat, just like cows. They don't wait until they die of old age.

Note also that if horse meat has been illegally sold as beef, you also don't know if it was *safe* horse meat to begin with. You could even suspect that there might be a reason why it wasn't sold legally as horse meat in countries where it's consumed and it's origin was disguised.

Horse meat isn't remarkably cheap. But since you don't know how it was introduced in the market, it could be horse meat that couldn't have been sold for human consumption to begin with, for instance. Hence could be much cheaper than regular horse meat. There's also the possibility that taxes and such weren't paid on it, either, which would lower the price as well.

There's nothing wrong with horse meat. It's just a cultural issue. It's not allowed in some countries, or it might be allowed but people don't want to eat it. I can't tell which it is in the UK, but even if it's allowed, it was labelled as beef. The same problem appeared in France too, where horse meat can perfectly be sold, but the problem was 1) It was sold as beef and 2) Nobody knew where it was coming from, and if it had gone through health inspections. It could have been not just horse meat, but even *unsafe* horse meat, since it couldn't be traced.

When leftover rice is reheated it can contain Listeria. It must be reheated thoroughly. This also applies to a rice dish that is cooked at home and then left to go cold, and then reheated before being served. Rice also contains Arsenic so eating a lot of it habitually is not recommended.

    • @carlitocarlo4463
      @carlitocarlo4463 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The actual problem is: If you put warm rice in the fridge, it will condense a lot of water and is then a perfect playground for those bacteria to reproduce. Just leave it out to cool down before putting it in a fridge. Then reheat it PROPERLY.
Also most of the rice does NOT contain arsenic. Just don`t buy the cheap shit that has been grown on abandoned cotton fields. The arsenic was used in cotton culture and therefore ends up in rice grown on those old cotton fields.

You actually can see all the moisture condensing there. This is a serious health hazard. Simple rule in every kitchen: If its hot, let it cool before putting into the fridge, also don`t cover it.
On the other hand if you put food into a maison jar: It`s a whole other story. You disinfect the jar before filling it, then put the stuff into steaming hot.

@@stevev3664 Sorry to hear that! Did you cause it yourself or did some stupid restaurant owner?
I for myself am very cautious about eating out. On the other hand i eat a lot of raw meats (even pork - it`s a tradition in here in germany) as well as fish, shrimp and shellfish. There are always some simple rules our grannies and ancestors already knew and we forgot. Like if your pork is older than a day or two (from slaughtering) - cook it. If your make raw sausage it has to be still warm from being dead less than a hour. Otherwise it`ll make you sick.
      Same with fish.
To me it`s all a question of following these old and simple rules of kitchen hygiene as well as some common sense.

I guess that they could contest the "findings" of the dog, insist that it's vegetable oil and not illegal animal fat, and refuse to let them incinerate it. I guess that it would then be seized to be controlled, and that they'd be fined/prosecuted if they had lied. Even if the dog isn't 100% reliable, they probably still would say people that it is, so that they'd be less likely to deny.
