Donna , he is from Austin Texas. A guitarist's guitarists, admired by many fellow guitarist.
This is one the top 100 guitar virtuoso performances ever.
Top 100? It’s top 20
Dave here, the guy that requested this. As someone else noted here, he is a big influence on Joe B. But among guitarists, like myself (I'm a long way from playing like this, I hear it takes practice, and I'm lazy) he is well known and is still playing today on tour with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. He has recorded and does sing on some songs, kind of a soft voice. I think he is in his Sixties now. Glad you enjoyed it. I can recommend quite a few guitarists that no one has heard of that play, not exactly like this but close. Roy Buchannan come to mind. He also did a ACL performance.
I recommend Shawn Lane
@@BRO77TXNow that I think about it, Lulu would probably like Joanne Shaw Taylor as she has been described as a female SRV.
Yeah, many great guitarists they are yet to discover.
When he was sixteen, in 1970, he recorded an shelved album with the group Mariani, "Perpetuum Mobile". It's a Hendrixy/proto metal-thing. It've existed as a bootleg for a long time. But I think it's gotten a proper release now. He was awesome already then. It's worth checking up just for the guitar playing.
This guy is a legend!! And has inspired many other guitarists most notably Joe Bonamassa. I know joe has talked in interviews how Eric Johnson is a huge influence on him 😊
Eric Johnson is one of the very best guitar players in the world, bar none. Easily in the top five of those still alive. Guitar nerds can argue about "of all time" lists, I don't really care; when you're this good, ranking one over another is pointless, just enjoy them all.
It's the clarity man. Most people who play for awhile can play this, but very few can nail it like he did here. Eric Johnson deserves to be revered as a literal god of guitar by all. I don't know a single person that could pull this off as cleanly as this recording (regardless of practice).
@@whatbroicanhave50character35, Shane Lane and Guthrie Govan are about the only guitarists of this caliber who could pull that off. And, Eric idolized Shawn; they were good friends.
You have to listen "Lonely in the night", "Desert rose" and "Manhattan"
Happiness inducing, I always smile when I listen to this. Every time.
I saw Eric Johnson play this live in the early 90s when he opened for Rush. Unbelievable performance. Thanks for sharing!
Eric Johnson, Joe Bonamasa, Joe Satriani, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. The best axe men that I have ever listened to.
Very good list. I would add Buckethead and Tommy Emanuel.
Andy timmons is an animal
Check out Shawn Lane... he was the guitarist Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani idolized.
Carlos Santana said it the best. EJs tone and technique is futuristic and violin sounding.
I was so happy to see that you 3 were reacting to this! It’s my favorite guitar performance ever and one of the greatest ever done! It’s hard not to get emotional watching this....
I wish my mom was alive so I could make videos like this with her. So awesome to see all your generations react, thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m 66 and first heard this when the album came out, I’ve been playing guitar about 20 years, this live version is one of the most astonishing things I’ve ever seen as far as guitar goes. Very few people can even try to cover this song and play at this level very very few, incredibly difficult to learn and to try to play. I enjoy your reaction videos!
I love that this man had the audacity to throw a guitar solo in the middle of a 5 minute guitar song and blows the roof off the joint
A TEXAS LEGEND 🔥✌🤘🎶🎶
Also the next Austin City Limts event is Oct 4-6 and 11-13 2024, lineup hasn't been announced yet.
I think Eric said that the notes of this instrumental just came to him out of nowhere and he just started playing it out of thin air. How incredible it is that musicians just think this kind of stuff up. This is a very anthem instrumental respected by the best of musicians and guitarists. Eric received a Grammy for Best Instrumental for this masterpiece. Rightfully so and worthy of it.
I recommend trying one of his songs called "Trademark". Instead of live version for this song I recommend watching the official studio video.
I saw Eric about 20 years ago, he was co-headlining and went on first with Blues Legend Buddy Guy going on 2nd, they were both beyond magnificent, for Eric, try Desert Rose from the Same Austin City Limits Concert, for Buddy Guy try Damn Right I've Got the Blues, studio or live, it is one of his signature songs. He also appears on Austin City Limits and is well worth tracking down. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Yes, SRV performed at ACL twice. ACL is in a theater, don't remember the name, it's changed venues a couple of times.
He was a legend among guitar players before he broke national popularity, way back in 80's sometime. Guitar Player magazine had a feature on him before any of his major label releases I think, where a whole bunch of legends talked about how amazing he was. Seems like a super nice guy too. Joe Bonamassa always apologizes to him for ripping off part of his style ( I think it's kind of joking, but partly serious too).
I think its an honor for someone as good as Joe B to say he 'stole' Eric's licks. They all learn from each other anyways, so whose to say where they got their style from? Absolutely Love Eric Johnson
Austin City Limits is a PBS show. They do have an audience but it is pretty exclusive. And of course, as you can see he is one of the great guitarist of all time. Eric played the local clubs about the time I was going to school there. He is one of my faves but I never got to see him live. Check out his videos on TH-cam. He will teach you how to play as good as he does. 😂He has some much new releases on TH-cam where he actually sings.
Not sure how exclusive it is, they let me in. Not sure how they do it now but used to be free tickets, first come first served.
He’s still touring I recently saw him on the G3 30 year anniversary tour. And the jacket is a high school band jacket he found at a store
5:17 - *The part that he played, right before that is just an introduction. It's not actually part of the song. Since y'all like this, I'm sure that y'all would like Joe Satriani. A good one, with this pace is "Summer Song", but "Clouds Race Across The Sky" is a really mellow one. Does Lulu know about the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue in Austin?*
I don't think so we will have to tell her.
Dover is a port town in Kent England. It's famous for the chalk white cliff's. There's even a song called theres blue birds over the white cliff's of Dover by Vera Lynn. It was a big hit during WW2.
Second some Satriani, among others.
You just listened to a guitarist that I refer to as a “King of Guitar Tone”. He shares that title with Carlos Santana and David Gilmour, IMHO.
Love you ladies - keep 'em coming!!
Thank you! Will do!
I happened to stumble across this post. Been working on E;J..'s guitars for about 40 years. A very inspired kind, open and gentle person. Enjoy more of his "magic" if you can. It's inspiring and renewing
When it comes to shooting a musical performance, the austin city limits camera men were some of the best. Steady tight shots of the individuals through all parts, tight shots of solos, and NEVER any flashy panning, cut aways, close ups of random pointless crap, etc. They filmed the right thing at the right time, always. They had to know/play music to do that.
Wow! Thanks for reacting to this. I saw him live around 1992 or so in San Antonio. One of the best guitar instrumentals ever. Eric said that he doesn’t feel like he can take credit for the song. It came to him and he wrote it in 5 minutes. 😊
Hi Kathy, Lulu, Donna, I'm happy that you ladies are at the pointy end of top guitar talent. Eric is a brilliant player and also a humble man. A real guitarist.
I’ve been there! The Moody theatre in 2019. I saw the Generation Axe concert there.
So great to see you ladies listening to this song. I first heard it on a cassette of instrumentals and never knew the performer or title. I searched for ages until I heard it on a music channel on Spectrum TV years later. Eric is a true virtuoso.
Stevie Ray Vaughn did play Voodoo Child by Jimi Hendrix on Austin City Limits. Killed it!!
Eric Johnson is easily in the top 5 guitar players!
Great to see your appreciation for Eric Johnson! Definitely one of the greatest guitarists ever!! I've been fortunate to see him live many times over the years, and have also been able to attend several Austin City Limits tapings. The show is now celebrating its 50th year on PBS, making it the longest running music show in American history. And that is a studio backdrop behind the band. Tis studio was located at the Communications building at the University of Texas. Now the show is filmed at the Moody Theater. I'm actually planning to see Eric Johnson again the first week of April in Austin. Again, enjoyed your reaction!!!
Probably my favorite from Eric Johnson. First part of this is him playing around before song begins. 😂. Eric will be on G3 tour with guitar greats Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Two other great guitarists to check out
I remember i tried playing this song on expert mode on gitar hero
This song made it #5 on the charts which is rare for an instrumental....Also you guys should listen to the studio version
which I think is better than this live version....here he improvises a lot more than in the tighter album recording
Both Johnson and SRV came out of Austin, about the same time. As I recall, they were good friends.
SRV is actually from Dallas… and yes! In fact, Johnson made a tribute song for SRV!
@@paolomonterroso1673 Yep, I knew he was from Dallas, but the Austin music scene was really his home base.
I saw him play this live just a couple of weeks ago. He was part of a triple bill that included Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. Great show.
One of the GOATS indeed
The White Cliffs of Dover are the region of English coastline facing the Strait of Dover and France but are they the same cliffs as in the tune?
Check out his performance of Trail of Tears in the same concert
Great song. I’ve been playing bass since I was 15 in 1989.
Gotta say, as a bass player, it’s always so fun and helpful to have a solid guitarist to help inspire my bass lines/playing (as long as I also have a rock solid drummer to keep my butt in line. Heheh!
I learned this bass line in high school because of just what a fun song it is.
Also….OMG! ….when is Kathy gonna stop being so beautiful?!? 😁
Cheers, ladies!
- Eric is still going strong today (at 69 y.o.), and touring!...
- I had the pleasure of seeing him live (at the famous, but now defunct, "Bayou Club", in Washington, D.C.) back in same era as this Austin City Limits performance.
- He was/is AMAZING! :)
God i miss The Bayou !
OOOOHHH Nice reaction!! I would love to see you three react to "Jan Akkerman and Paco De Lucia" two of the best guitarist. Jan is a Dutch electric guitarist and Paco is a Spanish classic guitarist (considered the best flamenco guitarist of all time)
There was a time when Eric and Stevie Ray were dating 2 girls that were roommates. Sometimes they would all go back to the girls house and hang. Would have loved to been a fly on the wall and hear those conversations.
Lulu's comment about the jacket , the story goes Eric was due to perform and went back to his high school and borrowed his marching band jacket for the show.
I would love to go to ACL in Ausin to see a show, they have had some greats shows up there. I saw SRV and also ZZ Top on there, as well as Joe Bonamassa. All those bands I have seen so many times in different size venues. My 1st time seeing you 3 reviewing a song, will have to look out for more of them from you all.
When you can talk with a guitar instead of your mouth that's bad ass
The jacket is like for a marching band uniform which he wore as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix
Saw him at Spirit Fest in Kansas City in 93.
If y'all dig Eric, you have to check out Eddie Van Halen doing his "Eruption Guitar Solo" from their "Live Without a Net" concert. People don't call him King Edward for no reason...
He does mess up a little at 6:26 but saves it nicely, a thousand times better than i could do. still a beautiful song and fantastic reaction, thank you😊😊
Thanks for listening
Try Days of the New Touch, Peel, and Stand if you haven't already
Eric Clapton called him Mr Johnson
From what I read, I believe it's outside event.
if you like instrumental try also - "Tony Macalpine - Empire in the Sky"
Check out Steve Vai in Theeth of the Hydra and Tender Surrender
Eddie Van Halen comes to mind.. his pick style.. yeah (all are good tho)
Try "Soundtrack life".

Sound like Appalchian accent
Texas born and raised.
You should take a listen to the studio version, much smoother. I'd be willing to bet that Eric's not too happy that this is the most popular video of this song, it's definitely not his best performance.
How can you, girls, stop this music in the middle?! If really your first hearing, you don't deserv it
We always stop in the middle because of copyright issues. Even then, sometimes it does not work.
@@KathyLuluandDonna no worries, just a joke lol. Keep up the good work
Can u react to taxi cab by twenty one pilots?
Eric Johnson the recreation of a young Eric Clapton but with his own finesse
Actually Wikipedia says the first Austin city limits was in 1974.
Try his song Friends, he sings on it
Well I'm 65 and Austin City limits has been on ever since I can remember too. At least back to 68 or 69.
