    I saw a guy looking at whiskey, and I recommended the Elijah Craig straight rye because I know E.C. Makes a good product and I do my research. He took the bottle and I’m glad I gave him a good rec!! And it’s in SoCalifornia for 25 bucks right now!!

    Perfect and the best description of how and what this Rye exactly is, while some may find it almost borderline too sweet, almost a bourbon, this is a great transition from bourbon to rye or for those like me who likes balanced rye and bourbon

    I picked up the EC earlier this week. I think it’s excellent for the price. Like you said, not too complex, but it packs a ton of flavor. Also like you, the Old Fo is simply the best!

    Both Elijah Craig Rye and and several Four Roses bottles have entered the Nevada market which I have never seen before in the last two years. So, the distribution is expanding. Yes, I did see Old Forester Rye for around 26 dollars, I will probably get that one too.

    Brilliant review as always. Getting quite into Rye, and it's amazing how good value Rye can be! This could be a good intro, as you say with a high corn content in the mash bill. I tried the knob creek rye as a bar pour and loved it, so pleased to see that given a shout out. Also quite impressed with the sazerac...even in the UK that can represent great value.
    Need to get trying Elijah Craig stuff in general, can be a bit pricier on these shores unfortunately :) this would interest me if it finds it's way onto our internet selling sites.

    Old Forester Rye 100 is fantastic. In my opinion it is the best rye in terms of availability, quality and price. Heaven Hill has Pikesville which is a great rye whiskey, but almost double the cost of OF 100 rye. Next best when accounting for cost and quality is High West Double Rye, although this one might be more polarizing due to its more spicey quality. I like Heaven Hill and think the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is the best quality bourbon for 10+ year aged, barrel proof whiskey in terms of price, quality, and availability. That said, Elijah Craig rye seems superfluous to me given that the same company has Rittenhouse and Pikesville. These 2 are already big players with significant market share in the lower to mid tier shelf and the upper shelf game respectively.

In comparison: This just showed up in Oregon at $30, the OFO rye is $24 here, Sazerac $30 and WT 101 Rye is cheap here $27 for 1 Litre. This is nice but I would take the WT 101 rye over it. Cheers!

    Nice review! I've only recently started to get more interested in ryes, so hopefully WI will see this sometime soon. Last night I did some MGP single barrel rye (Rossville Union) tasting with my local whiskey club for a barrel pick they're doing. Both were BiB, 51% rye (I believe) with one being 45% corn and the other being almost that in barley. Compared them to the standard 94 proof and barrel proof and had a fun time! Thanks for the thorough review of this one.

    I love the old forester rye. Currently sippin on it as I watch. The barley really stands out. Great for me as a scotch lover. Ritenhouse is a classic pull straight from the bottle rye imo. Knob creek is good too. Probably won’t pull the trigger on the Elijah Craig due to proof as I could get Pikesville for a few bucks more where I am.

    These are all in the cocktail rye category for me. I really like the Rittenhouse BIB and Old Forester ryes in a Sazerac (Old Overholt BIB too!), my go to rye cocktail. The barrel proof Knob Creek is a great sipping rye. EC should have brought this out at 100 proof, that really stands up better in a cocktail. It will be interesting in a year or two when they bring out higher proof expressions. You know they will.

    Great review! So basically I'm paying $5 more for Elijah Craig which is 6 proof less and maybe 1 to 2 years longer in the barrel for the same mashbill as Rittenhouse? Without tasting I'm leaning towards the Rittenhouse. I didn't care for the barley heavy Old Forester rye, the Knob Creek a little better. Pikesville is the king but twice the price of Rittenhouse.

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say if you like that rye spice than the Rittenhouse or Knob Creek would definitely be a better choice for you. The EC is sweeter and a bit more rounded in flavors.

    This is the worst bottle I've ever had for rye or whiskey in general. It tastes like wet dirt. I'm not sure if something has happened over the last 3 years to make it awful but it is so bad. I don't know if an employee just poor dirt into one of the barrels or what but it doesn't taste like rye it tastes like straight wet dirt underneath grass. I'm down for the young oak barrel and the black licorice and the sweetness and even the peppery flavor but this Elijah Craig tastes like mud. I just can't believe it. I love Elijah Craig regular bourbon toasted barrel etc but this one is freaking awful
