    Spiffing video as usual Sir! Another UK town added to the list! I missed seeing a BAB parade! Specially The Brass, always a lovely difference in sound to hear those Cornets doing the Clarinets job! Interesting to see a Rifles Trombonist on loan, they usually do this in reserve Bands, not full Bands. Usually they get another stand-in from another BAB, although with the ongoing shuffles that's bound to be slightly difficult. The Drum Major leading, Sgt Bates.
    Used to be the Drum Major for the Army Air Corps Band, when that was still a thing. Many Thanks for bringing us this Wonderful Parade!

    Hi MBE, and many thanks for an excellent, enjoyable and informative video. For those with an interest in the players and instruments, that's a nice little illustration at 04:14 of what an E-flat tenor horn (sometimes referred to as an "alto horn" in the USA I believe) sounds like! It's also, as Delvin has already commented, interesting to see a bass trombone from the Band of The Rifles standing in. With the amount of appearances (including at both Windsor and at Buckingham Palace) the Band of The Rifles have already been putting in over the last few weeks, one really has to admire the stamina!
    This is one of only 2 (I think?) British Army bands that use "brass band" instrumentation, with no woodwind or "reed" instruments (clarinets, piccolos, saxophones, etc etc) at all and also no French Horns.

      Hello Mike! Hope you're keeping well! Yes, here in the USA they do call it an Alto Horn, which I've always refrained from calling it that. the same thing with the use of "Baritone", no it's an "Euphonium"!!!! I find it annoying! Lol. Yes, this is one of two British Army Brass Bands, the other being BAB Catterick. The only thing missing today was the Soprano (Eb) Cornet, if there is one it isn't giving its full potential.

      Hi@@delvinrodriguez3341 , yes, keeping well, but very tired! The reason I questioned myself about the number of British Army Brass Bands was because, of course, there have been recent "rationalisations" (eg Band of the King's Division) down from certainly 3 and maybe possibly more. I wondered about the Soprano Cornet - I couldn't immediately see one and certainly couldn't immediately hear the "edge" to the sound, but to be absolutely sure I'll have to watch/listen in more detail.

      Hi Mike, thanks for the kind comment, I’m glad you enjoyed! There are indeed 2 regular army brass bands still in existence; British Army Band Tidworth and Catterick. However, long before any regular army brass band was formed the Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh has always been an army reserve brass band so you could argue there are still 3!!
      There is also the Band of the Prince of Wales who are a regular army band, but are not of full brass band size, with a stretch of only a brass 10 piece.

    Hello MBE!! I Love these "Freedom of" Parades. I see that BAB Tidworth Band has a Guest Bass Trombone today, I don't recognise that Uniform, at first I thought it maybe the Bugles & Rifles but on closer Inspection I see the only similarity is the Red Cockade. Was BAB Tidworth one of the Bands included in the Downsize/Amalgamations announced late last Year? It looks like this is a Brass Band, but I'm sure it was much Bigger at the Coronation. There seems to be a lot of Euphoniums I think there's 5 or 6, starting in the Rank with the Tuba, then 1 either end of the next rank & then more in the rank behind the Drums & Percussion. The Band Configuration is much different to what I'm used to, too with 4 Trombones in the first Rank , the Tuba & Euphoniums next, 1 Cornet/Bugle/Trumpet whatever in the next rank flanked by the 2 Euphoniums, then the Drums, more Euphoniums & then the last 2 Ranks are the rest of the Cornets, Bugles & Trumpets etc. The Differences are rather Interesting & the Sound is too, for that reason alone I'm Glued to the Screen.
    Another Great Video Mr MBE. The one Constant in all the "Freedom Of" Parades, is the number of People who line the Streets to watch & applaud "their Boys" in Uniform. It's a Unique thing in the Garrison Towns & Villages & those a little further afield. They all turn out to Cheer the Army, where as in the Big Cities (with the Exception of London, especially for Big Events) Shoppers will Stop to watch but there's not that same sense of Relationship, at least I don't think so. You managed to catch that feeling with catching the sound of Excited Children & some Adults & the Footage is Brilliant. Well done Sir!, it's not something that happens a lot on lots of Videos, but you've done it here. Congratulations & thank you for Sharing!

      Hello My Dear Vicky!!! The Guest Bass Trombonist is in fact from the Rifles. Which as I stated in my comment is quite rare to see. As it's mostly a sight seen in Reserve Bands. In Regular Army Bands, they usually get another stand-in from another one of the British Army Bands, so the Uniforms would be the same. Although with the last of the cuts a few months ago, having lost BAB Colchester, and BAB Sandhurst Becoming the Band of the Coldstream Guards (technically). It's bound to be difficult. No, BAB Tidworth has always been a Brass Band, since it's inception. Although size wise during the coronation every band had all the musicians available, so they were larger. The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland had 6 Tubas in the Coronation, as opposed to the 2 or 3 usually seen. Anyway, enough of me! Best wishes to you and yours Vicky, Say hello to Mr MOTH for me!

      Hi Vicky hope you are well. the guest tromboneist is from the Band of the Rifles. Regarding the instruments this is a traditional British brass band setup (BAB Tidworth and Catterick are the main all brass bands in the British Army) 4 trombones, tubas and euphoniums next, 1 flugal horn (simular to a cornet) flanked by 2 baritones (simular to euphoniums but a different tone), 3 percussion, Eb tennor horns (that look like mini euphoniums) they will generally take the place of French horn parts, and 9 cornets one of which is typically a soprano in Eb that gets all the high clarinet type parts

      @@Reggie_91 Hi Reggie! I'm doing fine thank you as I hope you & yours are too. Thank you for the Explanation, as you know I'm sure, we don't get to see these Brass Bands very often. With my limited knowledge of Brass Instruments, my fall back position is, 'If it looks like one of those, that's what it is, even though they might be big brothers or little sisters of the same family'. then a kind person comes along & introduces the family to me, then I know who's who, until the next time anyway. I did think the Bass Trombonist was from the Bugles & Rifles, but the Red Cuffs & Tunic Colour changed my mind. I need to remember that unless every Video I see is from the same Channel, there are going to be differences between the Colours. What may look Black in one Video, may look Dark Green or Blue in another. I've saved your British Brass Band Configuration into my "Dummies Guide" so if I encounter another Brass Band I'll have an idea of what I'm Looking at. Thanks again & enjoy the rest of your Weekend!

      @@delvinrodriguez3341 Hello My Friend!! Good to see you're still Alive & Functioning!
      MOTH says "Hello Matey! I'll just go & cancel the Wreath then" 😜 I'll let you into a little Secret, I don't read the other Comments, with the Exception of Your March Lists before I write my own comment anymore. The reason is; 1) it skews my own take on the Video & 2) I've been caught out too often with either incorrect information or badly worded information that I've misunderstood. I'm quite capable of looking like an idiot myself, I don't need any help. Also as stupid as it may sound, I remember better when I say I thought it was something & decided it wasn't & I get kind people telling me what it actually was, than if I say it is because I read it on another Comment. If you can understand what I just said, You Get the Award for "Top o' tee Mornin' tay Yer" this Week! We see these Bands so rarely, that it's all interesting for me when I do get to see them, if some what Confusing. They Sound very different to what I've come to know & Love from the Bands of the Household Division, I'm not saying better or worse, that's a Subjective Opinion anyway, it's the Novelty of the Difference & ofcourse me being me, I have to try & find what it is that makes that difference. Up until "Glorious Victory" I thought the Bass Drum was the only Drum, it wasn't until I saw the Side Drummer I knew he was there, I didn't hear him. But then, everything sounded an Octave or 2 higher. To me it was the Equivalent of playing only the top Manual on an Organ, no 2nd Manual or Pedals. I'm still processing it all but with the added benefit of all these replies.
      Love to the Library, as always!

    Why is the bass trombone in a completely different uniform?

    • @vickyRoyalHistory
      @vickyRoyalHistory 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hello Steve, For whatever Reason, the BAB Tidworth Band was missing a Bass Trombonist for that day's Parade. So as is usually the case they "Borrow" one from another Band. It's a Situation that happens quite often. In the Guards Bands for example, the Band of the Grenadier Guards may be Short a Trombonist so they borrow one from The Irish Guards, that's not so noticeable as they both have the same uniform, with only the Bearskin Plume & Button Grouping to tell them Apart. But with all the reductions & disbanding of the British Army Bands (BAB), Tidworth didn't have another BAB who wear the same Uniform, to Borrow a Bass Trombonist from. So they had to get one from the Rifles, who have a different Uniform. This is something that's going to become the new Normal, which is definitely going to be a Sad thing.
