    I was wanting to go into EOD training but am afraid it’ll be too hard and won’t have anything to fall back on, is there any reassurance you could give me or is it just going to be hard as hell?

    • @austinflynn1843
      @austinflynn1843  3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Yes it's going to be really hard. You shouldn't be worrying about your plan B though. In my experience, guys who have a plan B are more likely to quit on themselves and EOD. When you're wet, tired, dirty, cold, and miserable...your plan B will start sounding like a pretty good plan to go with in place of sticking around and suffering through EOD training. If you really want to be an EOD tech, then give it your all. You can worry about your fallback options after failing or quitting if it does come to that. That being said, the vast majority who don't make it through are reclassed into a different careerfield. Some are good, some aren't.

    I also want to join eod in the air force, my dad hit an IED while he was deployed with the army last year, thankfully he survived with minor injuries however it scared the living shit out of me and my mom and I know that we got lucky and others didn't make it out as easily, ever since then I've wanted to become an eod tech and was wondering if exposing ied's is still part of the mission set or even happens frequently, i want to help prevent others from having to go through what we did or even worse. Would really appreciate a clarification on this.

    • @austinflynn1843
      @austinflynn1843  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Counter IED is very much still a missionset of EOD. Due to the war on terror drawing down significantly, it isn't nearly as frequent as it used to be.

    Good shit. Thinking about joining EOD, but did you have any prior knowledge in mechanics or electronics before joining? I have none, and I don't want to go in unprepared. Come home safe

    • @austinflynn1843
      @austinflynn1843  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I wouldn't worry too much about not having prior knowledge. They'll teach you everything you need to know. The biggest thing is your ability to learn fast and retain knowledge. Basic math skills will be good to know/refresh on. You'll have to do time-fuse and blast/frag calculations pretty early on in school. Good luck!

    Hey man, thanks for the video! I am trying to decide between EOD and TACP. I love the technicality of EOD. Does EOD get any additional small arms and tactical type training after basic? If they do I definitely want to go EOD. The only reason I am considering TACP as well is because I want tactical training and small arms training like clearing buildings and stuff like that. Obviously, I know that’s not their mission but do they get trained for that stuff incase they are attached to a unit that does do that?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @austinflynn1843
      @austinflynn1843  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There isn't too much "in the mud" training/suffering after the 6 week preliminary course. During the main portion of the pipeline, they will still beat you down every couple weeks until you graduate. Afterwards, training doesn't ever stop, but its in the hands of your shop leadership at that point which varies in intensity from shop to shop while following the same yearly training plan.

    • @austinflynn1843
      @austinflynn1843  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's easier than high school math. Brush up on basic math, long division and such if it's been a while. They'll teach you what you need to know. The reason people mention it is because it's one of the few things academically you can actually study and prepare for beforehand.

    Lol, what happened to actually getting calls? I would have stayed in if I had these jokes of a deployment. This is almost a slap in the face of the Techs that have been killed or injured. Ridiculous.

    • @austinflynn1843
      @austinflynn1843  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Peace time military. Deployments certainly aren't what they used to be, but no one is slapping anyone in the face. I am sure those Techs who have sacrificed would be/are happy to know that things are more safe now. It's good to be proud of what you have accomplished and the challenges you have faced in the past with more turbulent times, but no need to get worked up about the lack of combat deployments and calls that newer guys aren't seeing due to less US involvement/more peace in the area.

    • @benmcgovern7206
      @benmcgovern7206 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not sure about the “slap in the face” aspect of that comment, considering there’s other branches that took over the AOR combined with the overall drawdown/withdrawal, typical shit we can’t change. But we get what we get and make the most out of it.
