    Don't shift at 2000 rpm or lower, that will bring you problems in the long run. if it feels sluggish, then you it's harmful for the engine. It's better to shift at 2500 rpm if you care about fuel economy, and rev it 'hard' from time to time, it's good for the car. Oh, and don't floor it under 2000 rpms, it's bad for both the engine and fuel economy. Also, it's better not to let it fall under 1500 rpms, unless you're in first gear.
    Those are my tips for shift times. They may not apply to every car, though.
    I also think it is important to rev-match when downshifting, but most people can't be bothered to learn how to.

    • @Olivia-W
      @Olivia-W 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ... Yeah, I tend to rev a little higher. Rev matching- I tried to learn. Not happening. Took all I had and 3 years of EU manual banging to allways have perfect hill starts and mostly smoothly shifting geats. Paying attention to revs more than I already do feels impossible.
      I will go back to automatic as soon as I can lol, manual sucks...

    • @lucidrebuilds6129

      When downshifting I usually put it in lower gear and give a rev and as the throttles coming down I ease the clutch out into gear usually engages perfect every time rev matching

  • @jacobp7289
    @jacobp7289 5 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    In Europe most people drive manual. You are not supposed to downshift to save your brakes... just put it in neutral or keep the clutch pressed and then use the breaks. Breaks are cheap... gearbox and clutch are not cheap.

    • @erik....
      @erik.... 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's good for fuel economy too because basically all the heat your brakes make must be produced by burning fuel. It's very important for professional drivers to learn engine braking.

    • @blackhole6828
      @blackhole6828 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes a rule I've always lived by. Instead of burning out your clutch or causing more wear and tear by downshifting all the time, use your brakes. Brakes are much cheaper. It's good to know engine braking too though. It's whatever you prefer to do. I only downshift when necessary and if I'm only driving through town I usually never downshift. As long as I'm at around 20 mph coming to a stop I throw it in neutral. If I'm over 30 mph I'll downshift. I try using brakes more because they're cheaper in the end.

    • @spidergoose891

      If you know how to drive, it doesn't wear the clutch or transmission at all. Rev matching isn't that hard.

    I'm a 51yo male and I could never get the feel for a manual car.
    I grew up in an Automatic family. We never owned a stick. Of course my parents had manuals back in the old days before I was born I was told. So when I was 15 I learned to drive with what my family owned. Automatics.
    When I was 19 or 20 I had a friend of a friend that worked as a valet parker at a local strip club and he told me they were looking for more valet parkers and would I be interested. I considered it, and then I told him I don't drive stick and I'm pretty sure that would probably be a requirement of the job, since there would always be some patrons that would drive up with their stick shifts. He said that he would take me out and teach me.
    That was the worst driving experience of my life!!! He wasn't a patient instructor.
    I've been honked at at lights, I've grinded gears, I've been yelled at for not changing gears at the correct time, I've been yelled at for not downshifting when starting to brake, I've been yelled at for not choosing the right gear to downshift into, I've stalled constantly trying to get out of 1st. I don't think I've ever NOT stalled when driving a stick ever. I just could never figure this shit out, and not to mention the anxiety, frustration and the nervous wreck it made me feel like when it was over. And boy I couldn't wait for it to over. I always hear manual drivers say "But driving a manual is so much fun." But I could never ever see this as fun at all. I can't have fun and enjoy myself if I'm tense and uncomfortable. Plus, he was a dick about it and kept tsk-ing and groaning.
    He took me out one more time, but he said that if I couldn't get the hang of it during this second lesson, then that was it.
    Well the 2nd lesson was a mirror image of the 1st lesson, disastrous.
    Months later he tried to tell me that I fucked up his transmission. I told him to fuck off.

      That’s an interesting story, thank you for sharing! Yeah driving manual is not for everyone and allot of it depends on who teaches you. Sounds like you had a horrible instructor. Here in Brazil, nearly everyone learns to drive in a sticky car. Today I`m 56 and I have less than an hour of experience in driving automatic cars, and I have nearly a million miles driving experience. One of my daughters takes her driver`s license a few months ago and I taught her in a manual car at her`s 13 or 14, and she got her road test in a manual car, she was reproved just because of the clutch action but in the second test, she`s got it! It`s really not so easy, but we all can drive a sticky car.

      why would you even have that type of person as a friend to begin with? if you learned with a patient person that explained how the clutch works it wouldn't be hard at all. im 17 and the first time i drove with my mom i just took it easy and didnt stall somehow.. i stalled a couple times the times after that but if you just start slow in a parking lot and feel the clutch out for a couple hours its pretty smooth from there

    Steps to hill start your manual car👇
    Switch into neutral and hold your brake
    => put handbrake on
    => release brake
    => switch into first gear
    => add some gas and release to clutch point
    => put handbrake off
    And you are good to go, you won’t slide backwards, not even a inch.

I’m 18 and I learned to drive stick there for the first time because my father (who I’ve never met my entire life until I went and saw him for the first time) taught me. It’s more impressive because all the people there drive REAL STEEP hills down or up with ease. And Traffic isn’t any better there lol. What i hate when driving a manual: being behind drivers who cant decide what speed to drive. With a manual car, the car just wants to “go.” People who slow down or speed up cause you following them to constantly move between gears. So annoying.

    • @dongibson8513
      @dongibson8513 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Irratic drivers who don't maintain a steady speed you get put from behind them sinse they are also notorious for braking for no reason.

    • @amonGustavo07
      @amonGustavo07 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re behind someone like that, keep the car in a gear below what you’d normally be in, that way you just engine brake if the person ahead of you slows down instead of shifting constantly. Shifting constantly is worse than bad mpg

    • @kylegrizzard8741
      @kylegrizzard8741 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Especially when they can’t decide between 20 and 30 mph. Constantly between 3rd to 2nd gear

  • @johndissociative8331
    @johndissociative8331 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You don't shift down or put it in neutral when you want to stop . You can start with engine braking in the gear you're in if you don't have to decelerate quickly, but normally you just start using the normal brakes and step on the clutch pedal when you reach a lower speed where the car would start to shake. You only put it in neutral when you're standing at a traffic light for example, because otherwise you'd have to push the clutch constantly.

      CLUTCH braking is hard on your clutch (riding it to slow down). Rev matching to a lower gear at high-ish RPM and actual ENGINE braking isn't bad for your clutch at all

    • @mybestyears
      @mybestyears 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But we can stop much more efficiently in an emergency combining engine braking with discs braking. That`s why this method is more efficient, and that`s why the race pilots do.

    • @kazeryu17
      @kazeryu17 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mybestyears Engine breaking a manual is actually necessary if you're driving in the mountains. I live in Virginia, and some of the roads on the blue ridge are so steep, that your breaks can melt if you try "only" using them to trim your speed. Your engine heats up when engine breaking, but unlike your breaks, it has a cooling system, and if it can get you up a mountain it has enough stopping force to get you down safely.

  • @Steinersgarage
    @Steinersgarage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Now i pressent!
    The True Way Of Driving A Manual Car In Traffic And Some Tips I Use Every Day For Driving A Manual Car
    1st The Downshift:
    if you are a beginner dont skip gears! always go from 5 to 4. Or 4 to 3. press your clutch and shift down do not skip. if you would skip and is about to release the clutch, you can shock your everything in your drivetrain. One such thing that can brake is that the clutch can litteraly explode if you are unlucky. learn your gears! after this you begin to rev match. tap the gas pedal slightly before releaseing the clutch and try to do it so you dont feel that the car ever changed gear. when it does that you have made the perfect downshift.
    2nd Being In Traffic:
    this is very simple to do. Yet almost no one does it. and this will change your thuoghts about manual being painfull in traffic. DONT STOP ROLLING!!! to master the manual car in traffic this is maybe the most important. and the hardest to master. you need to See and know in beforehand. for exaple you see a redlight comming up what do you do? well one thing for sure is not to keep up with the traffic ahead of you and stop right before the light.. No.. slow the fuk down and keep rolling untill it turns green and you never had to deal or worry about stalling the engine. there is no law of being a bit slower than the rest. and if you mangede to not stop you even save on fuel and you save fuel for the ones behind you as they will most likley follow your speed and be right behind you witch means they didnt stop either. Mastering the way of never stopping takes time as you need to be fluent in reading traffic. you will know where people are headed before they even do the turn or change lane and all the stuff like that. and remember. look far ahead and know what is ahead of you.
    3rd The Spooky Hill:
    as said in the video starting in hills can be scary sometimes. and that hand-brake tip is a good one. but it doesnt really teach you how to not stall in a hill. my one tip here is to use the normal brake instead of the hand-brake. now if you drive as i wrote in the 2nd part you wont be needing this. but if you miss read the distant and needed to stop in a hill. what i do is apply the brakes and when i know that i can start to drive soon i begin to very slowly release the clutch untill the RPM drops a tiny bit. and when i can begin to drive i release the brakes and i apply some gas.
    this way you dont start to roll backwards. because when you release the brakes your engine is already trying to make your car go forwards.
    4th The Eco-Drive:
    this is where the 2nd part makes the biggest impact. Fuel saving is very important for your leather book and mother nature. me personally would never drive an automatic car or some EV shit. but i do still care about the nature as i love taking walks in the woods. im aslo quite poor. so this part is maybe the most important for me. short and simple. keep low RPMs. dont listen to the guy in the video about low RPMs. he is only doing it wrong. having a car in a gear without touching the gas should go smooth. if it dont you have way to low RPMs. and i never shift above 2K always below! and theres only one exeptoin to this. and that is entering a highspeed road. where you shift between 3K or 4K depending on your cars preformance. me in my Saab 9-5 i shift at 3K and i got 150HP in it. so if you got below that you can reconsider to shift at 4k instead. when i go from 40km/h to 110km/h (24mp/h to 62mp/h) im in 3rd gear i accelerate to when my RPMs are at 3K and i shift up to 4th gear. and i dont shift up until im at the speedlimit. when i am going at the speedlimit i shift to 5th gear (my car is a 5-speed). and now i simply cruise. "but mister viking rune guy. Why is it okay to shift at so much higher RPMs when approashing highspeed roads?" you might ask. well that is because if it takes you to long to come up to the highspeed then you just slowly burn fuel to get the benefits of driving at a highspeed road. these highways are your best friend when it comes to eco friendly driving!
    5th The Traffic Jam:
    all the car guys have seen the tiktok where people complain about traffic saying "aaw man i only go 1 2, 1 2 but i dont get anywhere ;(" in this situation you only go 1. dont accelerate. dont shift gear. just leave it in the first gear and roll.. and stop if you have to, but keep your distance to car infront and you should get to keep rolling. if everybody did this traffic jams wouldnt be a thing in traffic. but people dont know how to drive.
    Extras: when you master to drive the manual car. you will be a God when driving an automatic one.
    but! never get yourself an automatic one. because thats gay ;)
    thanks for reading this "Manual on driving a Manual" hope it helped! and Drive safe!

    Learning to drive a manual well in all circumstances is a long process and a skill that, if you are interested in driving, deserves constant attention.
    Driving in stop-start traffic without excessive clutch slip and without getting jerks from any drive-line shunt takes skill (especially with petrol engines that don't have the grunt at tickover to ease away without a little accelerator).
    Proper heel & toe down-changes (with double de-clutching) into a corner can be a delight if you get them right (complete with the modulation of the brake to keep the deceleration constant through the change). After nearly 45 years of driving I'm still learning and am always striving to do these things better and more consistently.
    Unfortunately most fly-by-wire throttle servos are just too sluggish to make these things as satisfying as they are with an old-fashioned cable & rod throttle linkage (thankfully I still have one car thus equipped)
    Of course there is the extra involvement from reading the road conditions so as to be in the right gear for what happens next. With overtaking it's a case of engaging the required gear in anticipation of the overtake situation becoming possible rather than relying on an auto box kicking down in response to you flooring it when that opportunity arises .

      Nothing beats the satisfaction of overtaking in a manual, by dropping a gear, and applying about 10% throttle, knowing that if the slow poke I'm passing gets offended I still have 90% more gas pedal, and a few more gears to downshift into.

    The thing about a manuals for me at least is that it's a really engaging drive in favorable situations,
    while being a pain in the ass everywhere else.
    I think whether or not that trade off is worth it is a big part of the decision.
    For me, ehhhh, no not really if I'm being honest.

    Well said, comprehensive. I salute you. I've been [driving] for 55 years and it was Virtually All Manual. By far, the most automatic miles were in company vehicles for work .
    > I understand the charm of a manual in a performance car < believe me!
    All good points, good observations, but speaking to just the last point: I'll be getting a Stingray or a Porsche or maybe a ZL1 - I'm waiting to see what the new GT500 Mustang is when it arrives. Whatever it is, it'll have one of the wonderful modern autos available today because: point #5.
    This will be my only car (+ pickup) and For a Daily Driver I want a powerful/fun Cruiser that doesn't have to be "pumped & rowed" > e n d l e s s l y < down the road ! (been there, done that for over Half A Century) I've stated before in a forum that if it could have an "involving", Conventional Manual that would somehow shift itself when I wanted it to (and that would be 80 or 90% of the time) great ! But such a manual doesn't exist and it is unlikely that it ever will. I understand the charm of the 'involvement" of a stick shift. It reminds me of my fascination as a preteen of the "involvement" I saw when motorcycle riders kick-started their bikes. I couldn't wait to do that. There were no electric starters on bikes. No one misses kick starters on road bikes. It also reminds me of my appreciation of the "involvement" in some pocket watches (stem wound/lever set) of having to unscrew the crystal and move a lever to set the time; more involving, whoope! Now I have dozens of watches and I appreciate the stem wound/stem set more.
    It's not difficult to guess the age/experience level of many >not all< online commenters who insist that the only way to own a performance car is with a stick and who disparage all others for having the nerve to have any reason, other than physical limitation or city driving, to prefer an auto.
    Some very expensive, ultra high performance marquees don't make stick transmission cars anymore. About 3 out of 4 Corvettes sold are autos - and have been for many years. And those automatics weren't even in the same ballpark, performance wise, as the latest autos.

      You are a breath of fresh air actualy bringing in valid point instead of commenting what all manual bandwagon sheep comment when you say you prefer an auto tranny. ' just because you can't drive one doesn't mean they are bad.' Like driving a stick is hard lmfao. Always that same answer and it's the same when they are stating the pro('s) , 'it's more engagiiiiiiiiing'. I disagree with one thing you said tho. Manuals are fine in low powered cars but not in high powered cars imo. The engagement factor remark is hilarious to and just tells that they never owned a high horse powered car. I am 40, had 30 to 35 cars, 4 or 5 of them were auto tranny's. I am never going back, both cars are high hp cars and that dsg and pdk is just too good in everything it does. Not trashing your leg and clutch in daily traffic jams going to work and back and on track which I spend more time than on public roads these days it's just a dream to have. Manuals make no sense anymore this day and age and a car with 500 plus hp is involving enough as it is so their only argument just flies out the window with that.

    I was determined to learn stick shift. My buddy who got his license first got his mom's '99 Mercury Cougar. He had to learn stick, or he couldn't drive his car.
    A few months later, I got my license. He took me out several times, but I couldn't figure out how to start out for the life of me. I gave up then.
    Fast forward a few months, and I found a '96 Miata on Craigslist. It was a stick, and it was two hours away. I told my friend I needed that car, and I was determined to learn this time. So he took me out again, and three days later, I could drive his car well enough to claim my newfound stick-driving abilities...until I got my Miata.
    I was on my own. Got on the highway, somehow managed to stall out, at rush hour, two hours from home. I panicked and pulled off to the highway shoulder. I asked him to drive it to make sure the car was okay, and he deemed it to be fine. I drove through a small snow storm that night, got a speeding ticket, and once I finally had to start the car off again, I stalled six times in a row. It was around midnight; one other car on the road, stopped at a stoplight. He must've been laughing his ass off.

    My manual car is in the shop at the moment.. :( I honestly love stick shift more than automatic! It took me a year just to learn the feel, yes. But once I had it, I fell in love! My clutch went out in my 1999 Saab 9-3, and I had just now (by the help of a tow truck) dropped it off to one of the VERY few shops that fix Saabs. I've been driving my sister's old car (an automatic, she never really learned stick shift) for the past 3 months, and I dislike it. I don't necessarily hate it, because when I am in traffic or am on an extremely steep hill, it's nice. But, I'm more distracted in auto than manual. My brain wonders in a boring ass automatic car, but in stick shift, I'm hyper focused on my driving. I cannot wait to get my Saab back, nevertheless. I was extremely hyped this morning when I was waiting for the tow truck to show up.

The power band of each gear made sense and it was an absolute joy to drive. Recently I got a new WRX, and I absolutely hate driving it. The RPMs shoot up if you depress the gas pedal a millimeter, and to get going from a dead start is infuriating because 1st gear only lasts about half a second before the RPMs are 4k+

    Downshifting is not necessarily the "correct" way of slowing down. It can be very helpful if you may need to have more control or able to add power immediately due to road conditions, but it shouldn't be called the "correct" way. Simply pushing in the clutch and using the brake is perfectly fine for normal driving. That is after all, exactly what you're doing with an automatic transmission all day, everyday.
    It may also be a nice habit to shift the car down in the gears sequentially while slowing down with the clutch pressed in. That way you can immediately release the clutch to get power in the proper gear if needed.
    Keep in mind, that when you down shift, engine braking may slow you down, but there is always wear on the vehicle somewhere when it needs to slow down. Doing so applies stress to the gears on the opposite sides of the gear teeth, and puts stress on all drive train components in the opposite direction. "Technically", this could cause faster wear on drive train components, specifically the clutch pads, but not really noticed except over the life of the vehicle. It's not like engine braking will ruin the drive train in a year, so don't think this is some catastrophe. To me, brake pads aren't really an expensive item, but the clutch is. If I can save my clutch, by giving it an extra 20,000-40,000 miles of life by using the brakes more to stop, then that to me seems like a better idea.

    Downshifting isn't necessary. I don't know who told you that it is the "correct way" to slow down a manual vehicle. Engine braking is only important when you're descending down a hill, or if you're racing and trying to get around corners efficiently. For regular daily commutes, it is better for your vehicle to naturally slow down by itself by being in neutral while driving on a flat.

    Downshifting to slow down saves your brakes and it is not a good idea to use neutral when the car is moving.
    You can start on a hill without rolling back if you start in second gear then ease up on the clutch until it is just engaged you can h
    old the car just by using the clutch and no brakes. In the UK it is second nature for most drivers and we don't even think about it.
    I actually don't like driving an automatic. I bought one a few years ago and found that it made me lazy with my driving. With a manual I feel much more in control with a car. There are downsides like grinding gears when the clutch is not properly engaged and stalling because the revs are too low but as you become more experienced these rarely happen. Shifting gears is part of the fun of driving.

      Just like a AT. The computer will wear out the parts, too. It isn’t just user driving manuals.

    You should not have to think about any of this if you know how and engine and transmission function. You get in and drive. Smooth. Everyone I’ve met who says they can drive stick they shift horribly. I mean people who drive them everyday. Just because you can make it move and go 60mph doesn’t mean you know how to drive it. Even some the truck drivers I see on the expressway suck

    His dislikes are his opinion. Everything he said I don’t have a problem with it. Especially go and stop traffic. I’m dedicated to what I love to do.
    Fifth reason is a lame reason to hate driving manual. You’re supposed to be focusing on the road lol

    Manual burns your brakes when decending a lot from a high mountain. Manual is 10 times better anyway but unless you're disabled lol
