      Walt was scared, he does value his life (though not as much as he did before the diagnosis) and cares immensely about being able to provide more money for his family.
      But he made full use of that fear, to beg and plead and find a way to contact Jesse while making it seem plausible. As soon as he called Jesse his fear went away because he knows Gus will need him alive. But that doesn't mean his fear and pleading were entirely an act.

    I know you guys are ahead of this episode, so this is not a spoiler. Vince Gilligan (show creator) has said that no ambiguity was meant as to what Jesse did in the final moments of this episode. The viewer is supposed to know. Gilligan did not intend it to be a cliffhanger. When he saw fans guessing in between seasons as to if Jesse did or did not do it, he realized that perhaps the scene could have been shot differently

    • @bobdonda
      @bobdonda ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, I think Vince loves to do stuff just because it looks cool. Jesse was just pointing the gun towards the camera to fire the shot, because making the viewers feel like they're the ones being executed is a cool idea.
      Without mentioning spoilers, there are also some opening scenes to episodes that are just there because Vince thought it would look cool or grab the audience's attention. And similar to the part where you see Jesse move the gun to aim at the camera, I think the show might have been a little better off without it.

      There's a classic silent short film from 1903 called The Great Train Robbery that was a big success and is famous for its final shot where a criminal points the gun right at the camera and pulls the trigger. It's been a staple of film school classes for over fifty years. Scorcese alludes to it in the final shot of Goodfellas, and has spoken in interviews it was a deliberate reference to the 1903 film. Most people don't pick up on this but Mike's comments to Walter about getting his car fixed were designed to make Walter feel, if not safe, at least safer. If Gus gives the order to kill Walter, it's a lot easier to kill someone with their guard down. As soon as Mike remarked, "You're going to want to get your car fixed," Spartan commented, "That's interesting. That implies they're not done." This is exactly what Mike was trying to imply to Walter. Mike's intent is to make Walter think, "Oh, if the priority for Mike is to get my car fixed, then obviously killing me isn't on the table." However, I think Mike was being a little transparent here and I don't think Walter fell for it even for a second.

    • @nyztan0
      @nyztan0 ปีที่แล้ว

      But why then would they not have killed Walter in the desert to begin with, it really doesn't make any sense if you think about. Yeah you can spin up some story to spin the narrative that "oh it's because they wanted to find Jesse first" or something similar, but they didn't manage to find him either way. To me if Breaking Bad is supposed to seem realistic then this is a hole in the story, but since the writing is so incredibly good people are very fast to look the other way.

    • @StinkyBuster

    Now imagine the credits appear and you know that it's going to be 9 months before the next episode (negotiations with AMC eventually delayed the airing of S04E01 until 13 months later).
    The network originally wasn't totally committed to renewing the show, as it was expensive and, though critically acclaimed, it didn't have the ratings of other AMC properties like The Walking Dead. Part of what saved the show was that the first two seasons (and eventually the third) had been released on Netflix and word-of-mouth about the greatness of S03 got people to binge the series ahead of Season 4. Season 4 then premiered with the highest ratings in the show's history (and it just continued to get better and better if you can believe it).

    Gale looks "cute", but in fact he is no better than any scumbag like those who killed Thomas. Because Gail makes money being part of a monstrous system that destroys lives. People like Gel, Walt or Gas are the most important part of a monstrous drug system that kills completely innocent people, like those hundreds of victims flying in an airplane. I will also add that Gale is not a fool at all and during a conversation with Gaz immediately understands that it's not about cancer, but Gus's desire to eliminate Walt. And Gail doesn't mind at all.

      @@tomhardy2099 I'm not saying Walt isn't smart. He obviously is. I'm saying Gus is smarter when it comes to playing this game. That doesn't mean that Walt can't outplay Gus, it simply means it would be very hard for him to achieve that, and even if he did, he would never be able to fill his shows and run the game as effectively.
      Walt could not run an operation as huge and as effectively as Gus does. He has never run a business, legal or otherwise, and he doesn't have Gus' skills. Whatever overlap in skills there is between Gus and Walt, it is very small, and Gus' skill set is much wider that Walt's.
      Gus manages hundreds of people in his enterprise. He is a huge boss, in terms of status in the drug game, but he still has bosses above him that he has to manage and answer to. And he's being doing it for decades. If Walt was in Gus' shoes, he would fumble very quickly.

    Jessie didn't change his arm. The motion you see was the camera view getting into the line of sight. In other words, Jessie never changed his aim. It was trained on Gale the whole time. The camera angle changed to put the viewer into the line of sight to be shot. I've seen other reactions to this episode. Some people actually know the lyrics to Gale's music and sing along. I've never heard his music at all. Apparently it does have a paying audience. I'd hate to see what their concerts are like.

    I bet Mike’s regretting his “no more half-measures” preaching now 😂
    An ironic thing is that despite how it initially seems, how Walter and Gale seem more compatible as lab partners than Walt was with Jesse, and how Gale to be like Walt, when it comes to who they actually are as people, how they are with people, Gale is actually more similar to Jesse than he is Walt, and I don’t think either of them every realized it.
    Just as Jesse is loyal to Walt, Gale is loyal to Gus the same way. Neither of them want to let their mentor down. Jesse and Gale even say almost the exact same thing.
    “Don’t do this, Mr. White.”
    “You don’t have to do this.”
    Gale’s last words were a reminder of what Jesse said to Walt.
    It begs the question on Walt’s decision to kill Gale instead of going to the DEA: Was Walter’s decision for the right reasons? Will Walter’s way, instead of Jesse’s suggestion, ultimately have consequences in the same way as Jesse’s regarding the two drug dealers did?

      I don't think he requires Walt's product. Gus could have gone with Gale and everything would have worked just fine for him. But Walt's superior product sells for a lot more money, it probably increases Gus's profit margins quite a bit, and accelerates the timeframe for Gus's future plans. It helps him fully capitalize on having this territory all to himself.
