2021 but I honestly don't even remember why XD. Like I just bought Yakuza Kiwami from Amazon one day but I seriously can't remember the reason. After that and getting a bit obsessed with it, I got the platinum of the game and then proceeded to buy all other games + spin-offs and got those platinums as well. And here we are.
Early this year. Played zero because it was on sale for cheap, mostly because it seemed really funny. Was blown away by the story and characters and ended up playing through every other game throughout the year.
It's crazy how Yakuza started on the PS2 where to some would look at it and think "Japans version of GTA but without the ability to drive vehicles" and that wouldn't be too far off. And yet here we are, having 8 games, few spin-offs, remakes of itself and it's still going to where we're gonna be playing Majima searching for One Piece.
The Yakuza games legit got me through quarantine back in 2020. The cozy atmosphere of wandering through the Kamurocho streets was really nice when we couldn't leave our homes. I'm really hyped to see what RGG has in store for the 20th anniversary next year. Im still praying for the fabled Kazama game personally.
I just booted Yakuza on a PS2 emulator a few hours, that being the very first time I've ever played the original non Kiwamified version. Had no clue. What a coincidence.
I can't remember the year, but it was the time when i decided to finally get kiwami 1 The rest was history, and then I found your channel before the discord days One of the greatest moments I remember was us in the community all hyped for Yakuza remastered collection, what a time to be alive To 19 years more and beyond!!
19 years in the PS2 made you something worth sticking on when you've had enough Gran Turismo 4 and SSX 3 for a while. Honestly, the end of the PS2 era was something so magical. I was born in 1999 so I was essentially only starting to love games around 2005, 2006 or so, and my god, what a time. So many new exciting games still coming out yet so many classics released earlier in the first decade of the new millenium just sitting the used section waiting for me to experience. I got Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 when I was six years old for £9.99. I lost that copy alongside a bunch of my other PS2 games as I grew up and moved houses. I now have a copy of it again I got quite a few years back. It cost me £1.
lovely video appreciating the legacy of this now behemoth of a series. Really cool that your pops was ultimately the one responsible for getting ya hooked on Yakuza. I've never played the original games, but I feel like it'd definitely be a fun thing to do just to compare them to the Kiwami versions. Seeing the locked camera angles while running around Kamurocho in the OG really gives it more of that classic arcade-y style feeling that a lot of older games were known for. Had no idea Yakuza one did that too. It's funny to recognize all the old combos and heat actions though, felt like I was watching an old home movie, lol. Here's to hopefully 19 more years of Yakuza/Like A Dragon fun for the whole family!
I got Yakuza 3 back in 2012, and I got at a point in my life I needed it. The scene on the beach with Izumi was the moment I knew I was going to love Kiryu as a character. Though I wouldn't say as was as big of a fan of the franchise until 2017 with 0. That was when I would go completion mode with these games and get them day one. Though without 3, I don't know if I would have cared for the series. So I thank Yakuza 3 for the great journey it started me on, even if it took me 5 years to really appreciate it.
Greetings again. Now I'm thinking back to when I first discovered Yakuza by accident in 2018 when I watched a friend play Yakuza 6. I found Yakuza at the right time since I was dealing with being bullied out of college twice and I had to take my mind off of school drama somehow. The sixth game looked and sounded amazing, but I had no idea that Yakuza 6 was one of many in a beloved franchise that didn't become as well-known in the West until 2020. I got curious and browsed online to learn who the Dragon of Dojima was and who his friends and foes were, making me feel that I was getting a college-worthy crash course on Yakuza without needing to write term papers. Fast forward to today and I'm happy to be a casual fan even though I have yet to play the games or the Judgment spin-offs. Perhaps someday I will, but I like collectibles and action figures more. On a funny note, I had no idea that Leon's practicing telepathy in the video.
W 🔥 i played the original one on aether it was okay i loved 4 0 k1 and k2 akiyama was so cool since i played him before kiryu hes my favorite when i played yakuza 4 for the first time i feel in love with the environment and gameplay just running around fighting and seeing the substories
I recently played the restored undub version of this (with the japanese voice acting and retranslated english text) and it was a joy, barring the ghosting graphical glitch i couldn't get rid of.
Had my personal 1st anniversary on the 29th, it’s a little cheesy but this game and its fandom has helped me up during rough times and made me able to start over despite people around me still holding on to my old self. Happy anniversary, and to many more too!
I am so proud that first Yakuza game was released exactly the same day as my 18th birthday. It was meant to me to play this series. I remember playing it on original PS2 and boy oh boy, it was really something back in the day. Beat em'up with a story like in jrpg, well more mature story and more realistic. That tattoo mission mentioned in the video it's really great and show Kiryu as a character and how much he value a Yakuza tradition.
I still remember when i first played this series in 2018. It was kiwami 1 on ps+, and i had just bought red dead redemption 2. After playing red dead for a few hours, i decided to try this little japanese game, and when the thief from the start stole kiryu's ring, pawned it, and used the money AS HE WAS RUNNING, i couldn't stop laughing at the absurdity of what looked like a serious game. I quickly forgot about red dead 2, and to this day, this continues to be the best series I've ever played.
Very cool video! Can't believe it's been already 19 years since its release. As for me I first played it in late 2011. Sadly couldn't finish it -it kept freezing on me, heck due to my attempts to play and finish it properly I ended up owning TWO copies - one of them was handed for free by the shop I bought it the first copy. Sadly for some reason my PS2 just didn't want to cooperate, and I never had this problem again or since. Years passed I returned to the series thanks to Y0 and caught up with the series, except og Y1 and 2. Last January I finally managed to play and finish og Y1 ( thanks to owning two coopies which I swapped in freezing points) and yeah, it's definetely a unique game, I'm just sad I gave up due to technical issues back then because otherwise I'm certain I woulnd't be as borhered with its jank as I am now, and I would get into this series waaay sooner. Better late than never I guess 🐉
It's crazy that I was born on the exact same day as the first Yakuza game came out. I guess I was meant to be obsessed with this series from the start We're both 19 now 😭
7:16 I actually really like that the Heat Action are simple, it makes it feel more grounded in reality, and differentiate Kiryu from 2005 to Kiryu from, lets say, 2012 where he was grinding peoples faces against the floor due to his pure anger Also, Essence Of Wreckage is so satisfying, I really love the angle in Y5 where you get to see the POV from the enemy and from Kiryu, I wish they kept this but uh, yeah.
Honestly, one thing I love the most about this game that isn't talked about is how you keep your Heat bar if you finish a fight with a Heat Action. It's super small and sublte, but it gives you an incentive to finish fights stylishly. What a game, this Yakuza '05.
It's funny that i adore this series because of meme (that dame da meme came out around 2020 i think) and here i am. I hope RGG always deliver a great game and please RGG, make a JoJo game, i demanding it
Had a choice to play this OG version or Kiwami. Glad I went with this and currently playing through 2. Still such a masterpiece and holds up after recently playing infinite wealth and yakuza 6
Shoutout to my friend who would not stop talking about yakuza 0 and begged me to try it out. I thought he was just exaggerating and didn't think much about the game/series... now I own almost every game on steam and I'm currently going through my first playthrough of the entire series, not to mention my crippling addiction to all yakuza media (I'm currently on chapter 4 of yakuza 3). Also wanted to thank my steam deck for making the entire experience even better and for making playing yakuza on the go a possibility. TLDR: Got introduced to what I now consider one of my favorite videogame series because my friend wouldn't stop being an annoying shit about yakuza 0, so uh... 10/10 best friend ever, he really was like a dragon.
Thank you for the video, I'm hoping your dad is still doing well. My own father who passed away in 2016 is the one who got me into gaming like Yakuza and other games as well. I just want to let you know to hold on to that brother.
I bought a ps2 earlier this year(had one as a kid, played so much of ff10 and kh2) and decided to finally play y1 and 2 ps2, and its wild just how well it holds up after all these years, as well as the both unique things to the games like the static camera angles, as well as stuff like animations and heat actions used to this very day, lol Also yeah 6:18 it slaps so good
Kinda insane thinking how when the West got Y1, the PS3 was already out. There's something oddly fascinating about franchises making their exclusive debut on previous gen consoles.
man i remember playing yakuza 1 (ps2) i was so sucked into the series that i literally had to cut off my friendship with my cousin who was a fortnite addict. yakuza is like a half life headcrab in my head, i dont even listen to normal songs i listen to yakuza karaoke, i draw yakuza characters in different poses (they lowkey look good but im never satisfied with my drawing) and also i dont do virtual drawings its all paper n pencil n love. hell i even cosplayed as kiryu in my school. now hol on, i havent played EVERY single yakuza games because im broke asf ive only played yakuza 1,2,3,4,5,0,kiwami and kiwami 2. my favourite yakuza track is always Fly (im a filthy yakuza 3 defender) i love yakuza more than any game, more than assassins creed, devil may cry (i got into a beef with my kyodai because he said dmc better)ghost of tsushima, fortnite man id love if fortnite collabs with yakuza and i love yakuza more than any game other than red dead, i love red dead and the yakuza franchise equally. man i even run kiryus hair style and hot damn its accurate ALMOST 20 YEARS OF YAKUZA MADE US A FUCKING YAKUZA
Last year I ended up playing OG Yakuza 1 for the first time (after playing through every game that was on Steam up to mid-2023). Ended up really enjoying it despite its age, and yeah OG Yakuza 1 is such a _vibe._ Also the English dub is what kept me going 😂 Been trying to get into OG 2 but that game feels like kind of a slog tbh. Started over twice and both times I lost interest by the point where you have to pay that Mahjong dude ~400K since I never have enough money to just pay him off immediately.
There's a lot I like about OG2 (the soundtrack, the better combat, etc) but I 100% agree with it being more of a slog. It's the game that basically started the trend of you having to wander around until the story allows you to continue.
Also idk if someone mentioned this already, but technically speaking... the first Yakuza game to no longer have cutscenes for substories was not Yakuza 5, but actually Yakuza Dead Souls (unless Kenzan also didn't have them too which would make this reply dumb). Can't believe Leon is a fake Yakuza fan smh/j
I can say for certain that the Battle Review is the hardest in the entire franchise, at least for getting S on everything. I am only saying this because I did it, I'm a crazy one. The one hit challenges sucked the most. The exp challenges weren't too bad because using heat actions gives you exp. And yes, you get infinite heat on subsequent playthroughs. One more thing to add about getting S in everything, is that information on what is needed for S is so limited online, it's all about trial and error at the end of the day. So to anyone reading this, avoid getting S please, I did it and it's way too much of an hassle.
I have no idea why people compare Yakuza to GTA. If there's a comparison to be made, it's with Shenmue, to which the series is a clear spiritual successor, given that the Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi was a producer on the first Shenmue.
Essence of Wreckage goes even further in the original Yakuza 2 by the devs just saying screw it lets just make the heat action to where we make their thumbs sore by mashing the Square button as many times as you can until the heat bar is at 0 and ho boy it does so much damage against any boss in the game it's too op & thank god there isn't an achievement for the first Yakuza 1 HD to get an S rank on all of the Battle Review you just only have to do one.
Huh, I kinda wanna play it now but it's too much of a hassle. I got into Yakuza when 0 came to PC and now I've played all the RGG games that have been released on PC and these games are my favorite games of all time. It's funny because I can't even really explain why. The main stories aren't that great, the combat could be better... The music in every game is amazing though and the amount of stuff to do in these games is second to none. Also the games are full of characters that you hate or love and they are all great. Very well written. I also love the real ladies in the games, some probably find that stuff corny but don't shoot me, Gaiden hostess clubs were peak content.
I know you say you won't play Sleeping Dogs, but IMO it is probably the closest a western developed game got very close to replicating the "feel" of the Yakuza games. A shame that EA shelved it and we will never get a sequel for it.
Oh Yakuza was rather clunky in gameplay. But the first time I played it I knew it got potential, and can't wait for the next Yakuza games. I'm glad to follow the games from step 1 to today, worth my time.
I've first heard of Yakuza games in yandere simulator dev logs, but never tried it myself. Then later on, Baka Mitai meme became a thing and so I bought Yakuza 0...because of a meme, althought I did see reviews of Yakuza 0 before that. But I didnt start playing any of the Yakuza games until last year, starting with Ishin. But when I played Yakuza 0... that hooked me hard. I'm playing Infinite Wealth and Yakuza 0 still remains PEAK for me. And I understand why and its because when the franchise was on a decline, their gave their best while developing Yakuza 0 and it actually does feel like the only game, where they actually gave their best. Ever since that, to me it felt like they made these games from a comfort zone, SEGA even considers Yakuza one of the big tree franchises they have. So I doubt there's ever gonna be a game like that again.
(new pirate yakuza trailer) amnesia majima vs brotherhood saejima 😢 saejima is not main character. saejima even kiryu. saejima is stronger than majima. saejima nerfed 😢
Which year did you get into the franchise?
2021
i forgot
2021 but I honestly don't even remember why XD. Like I just bought Yakuza Kiwami from Amazon one day but I seriously can't remember the reason.

First played in 2011 with Yakuza 4 played for a bit and didn't go back and then really got into the series in 2018 with 6
19 years in the gaming industry made you a fucking Legend
Bring that game Devilleon7!
A legend that's like a dragon

19 YEARS IN THE GAMING INDUSTRY MADE YOU A FUCKING LEGEND!!
I am so glad this series exists. Let's hope for another 19 years

You mean One Piece if English Dub Law became the main character after finally going nuts and killing Luffy?
I hope Sega brings this game to the PS2 Classics catalog on the PS4/PS5 emulator.
I know it's not really the same but on modded ps4 you can play ps2 games from the homescreen iirc (if you have moldable firmware)
I think this game has some licensed elements iirc so they would need to somehow modify that out in order to make it available probably.
Leon thanking the viewers for watching while Kiryu is in the background curb stombing some random guy is peak.
Also, you cooked with the art XD
The Yakuza games legit got me through quarantine back in 2020. The cozy atmosphere of wandering through the Kamurocho streets was really nice when we couldn't leave our homes. I'm really hyped to see what RGG has in store for the 20th anniversary next year.

I just booted Yakuza on a PS2 emulator a few hours, that being the very first time I've ever played the original non Kiwamified version. Had no clue. What a coincidence.
Happy 19th Anniversary for our best action beat em up game ever, Like a Dragon/Yakuza!!!!
I can't remember the year, but it was the time when i decided to finally get kiwami 1
The rest was history, and then I found your channel before the discord days
One of the greatest moments I remember was us in the community all hyped for Yakuza remastered collection, what a time to be alive
To 19 years more and beyond!!
It's a blessing I made the decision to get started with the series to begin with. Thank you for the content that you've provided for all of us!
19 years in the PS2 made you something worth sticking on when you've had enough Gran Turismo 4 and SSX 3 for a while.

I wonder what RGG will do for the 20th anniversary 🤔
Yakuza remake kiwami 1
One of the 20th anniversary thing is literally pirate yakuza game
For the 10th anniversary we got YAKUZA 0 so I hope it’s big
@@BlehhhXP My wishful thinking is Yakuza -1, with a young Shintaro Kazama as protagonist.
Thank you Leon I've been having a day and your video helped. Just because it's nice to hear someone talk about what they love
11:48 wtf was that tiger drop
i love rgg games ngl one of the few things that keeps me going

8:21 best punch sound effect in yakuza change my mind
I recently played the restored undub version of this (with the japanese voice acting and retranslated english text) and it was a joy, barring the ghosting graphical glitch i couldn't get rid of.
HBD Yakuza! Ngl i’m quite envious of the people that got to enjoy this series since the first game.
The fixed camera in Yakuza 1 and 2 makes me feel like I'm constantly being watched by The Florist

One of my all time favorites. The cities in these games feel so much more alive than any other series.

Best year of my life.
Happy 19th, Yakuza, and what a ride its been. From your highs, to your lows. Here's to the big 20 next year.❤
I still remember when i first played this series in 2018.

Happy Anniversary Yakuza!!! I was there day 1 on PS2!!!
Wow so next year will be the 20th anniversary of the franchise for some reason I thought it was already 20
Would love a small retrospective on each game when its hit the next anniversary
Thank you SEGA for forming my life with this series
Thanks for reminding me I'm old.

You forgot to mention the ps2 exclusive Serena hallway but I'll let it slide since the video was otherwise fantastic (Happy Birthday Yakuza! 🎉)

Yakuza is released in December, so i can safely that it's a christmas game.
It takes place during Christmas and has Amazing Grace in the credits, so yes “it’s almost Christmas.. so we brought so presents”
God i miss the ps2 era so many games franchises born best console era imo
20th anniversary project game next year? 👀👀
It's great that you featured devil may cry. Because for me, yakuza has taken some elements from it.
I'm so glad I finally got into this series as of 3 years ago
19 years in the gaming industry made you a fucking turned based role playing game.
🎉
19 years of me being gay and autistic.
Wait a second.... you're 28/29???
I look older don't I
I guess it's because you're so wise and experienced in the ways of the Yakuza lol.
I have no idea why people compare Yakuza to GTA. If there's a comparison to be made, it's with Shenmue, to which the series is a clear spiritual successor, given that the Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi was a producer on the first Shenmue.
Have you reviewed the yakuza amazon series?
Yep, got two videos on it! One is spoiler free and the other is in podcast form with other yakuza content creators
@devilleon7 noted thank you for letting me know
Essence of Wreckage goes even further in the original Yakuza 2 by the devs just saying screw it lets just make the heat action to where we make their thumbs sore by mashing the Square button as many times as you can until the heat bar is at 0 and ho boy it does so much damage against any boss in the game it's too op & thank god there isn't an achievement for the first Yakuza 1 HD to get an S rank on all of the Battle Review you just only have to do one.
TIL you are only a year older than me
Huh, I kinda wanna play it now but it's too much of a hassle.
I still prefer Funk Goes On in the original over the Kiwami version
based
cool
the best game
Is it today or yesterday
Same age as me lol. I hope they port ps2 versions to modern consoles and pc. To hell with their green filter.
Oh Yakuza was rather clunky in gameplay. But the first time I played it I knew it got potential, and can't wait for the next Yakuza games. I'm glad to follow the games from step 1 to today, worth my time.

idk if this is a hot take but i actually prefer the kiwami version of funk goes on tbh
Dang :o
So I doubt there's ever gonna be a game like that again.
yakuza 1 is a good game
the dub is very campy
(new pirate yakuza trailer) amnesia majima vs brotherhood saejima 😢 saejima is not main character. saejima even kiryu. saejima is stronger than majima. saejima nerfed 😢
