Was admiring an Edsel at a car show a few years back when an elderly woman showed up to take a look. I watched her go completely around the car with a very stoic look on her face. When she was finally finished with the circle, she approached me and without hesitation, commented something to the affect “it was ugly then, and its still ugly today.” She then slowly went on her way with no further comment. I just laughed.

This 1959 Edsel Corsair Convertible in President Red looked extraordinary in the sunlight! I agree that it has very nice and curious details, such as the long white side stripes, enclosed by chrome strips, that run throughout the body, or the unusual letters of the brand placed between the door and the front side corner, along with those triple rounded rear guides reminiscent of a spaceship. Oh, without forgetting, of course, the huge and controversial front grille resembling, according to critics, a "horse collar." A beautiful and elegant interior combination in red and black, along with the pleasant instrument panel full of chrome details. The ride at the end was pleasant, while the sunlight was still shining on the hood and the peepholes. I was struck by the functions of that strip hanging on the back, which helps disperse static electricity, I didn't know that! Thanks to Buz for showing us, and explaining, some details of this automotive classic! Best regards, Lou!

It is interesting that in an era when most vehicles are hideous and poorly designed, the Edsel is starting to look "normal". That is one beautiful Edsel in red. It is a shame that the brand failed as soon as it did, but in the modern era, it would have gone the way of Mercury and Oldsmobile and Pontiac because of the need for companies to cost cut to pay for outrageous wage demands. I love the red with white accent painting. I am torn on whether the top should be white rather than black - the black makes the top kinda disappear while the white would have dominated. Thanks for again sharing a wide range of vehicles on your channel, Lou. You are first rate!

It isn't outrageous wage demand that killed those brands. It was more the fact that too many different manufacturers and brand are in the US auto market and those brands weren't selling well enough to be profitable. GM was trying to hang on to the brands way too long and reality set in when they had to be bailed out by the government. All those brands use to have different bodies that their counterparts within the company. By the time the brand were discontinued there was very little difference between them. Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles looked like Chevrolets, Mercurys looked like Fords. Plymouths looked like Dodge. Chevrolet was lower in price than a Pontiac or Oldsmobile so why spend the extra money get the Chevy. Same for Mercury it looked the same as the lower priced Ford why buy it? The Market killed the brands not the wage demands.

      @bobpierce115 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

You're so right on your points here. I'd like to add that with GM. their cars looked a lot alike for many years before they were discontinued. Although they sold well at the time, GM really began to die with the '77 full-sized/down-sized cars. One of the reasons was unlike the '71-'76 generation, they do longer had the open 2 and 4 door hard top and convertible models (those ended for Chevy-Buick in '75) as fun distractions if you will. No, from '77 on it was strictly a 2/4 door pillared sedan and a wagon. Then even the 2 door sedans coupes were dropped around 1990. Everything that could be done with those cars styling-wise HAD been done years earlier. They found themselves in the same boat as movies and music. All done, all over with. Then they gave up on cars altogether and replaced them with SUV's where styling no longer mattered at all. @@Irishfan

@@Irishfan: Between the 1920’s-1948,all brands looked the same. But! To this day, the 1920’s-1940, the Ford remains the most sought after automobile than GM and Chrysler combined.
That changed in 1949 when Ford introduced the ‘shoe box’
design. The 1950’s-1960’s was the golden age of design.
The auto magazine’s at the time gave the Edsel a thumbs down, along with any other FOMOCO product to this day.But there is no other car that looked like the Edsel. I think the name ‘Edsel’ was square. It didn’t catch on.
Now, how can you say a 1967 Mercury Cougar looks the same as a 1967 Mustang? The Pontiac Firebird did resemble the Chevy Camaro.

Wow! I think that is the first Edsel I've seen with the 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission. In '58, they used the old Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic. For 1959, Ford introduced it's first 2-speed new Ford-O-Matic transmission. Initially, it was used in lower line Fords and Mercury's and most '59 Edsels. It was the only automatic available in Falcons and Comets well into 1964. Plus Ford's new mid-size cars well into 1964. If I ever ad an Edsel, this oe here is what I would want.

The door jamb plate displaying MEL reveals one of many reasons Edsel failed. Was this a step up Mercury; a step down Lincoln, or just another kind of Ford? The Ranger and Pacer series were built on a Ford chassis, while Corsair and Citation were on the larger Mercury. And how ironic that Edsel foreshadowed the ill fated Citation and Pacer lines with those names. But hey, this ragtop is beautiful and very well maintained. I’ll give it an E for extraordinarily endearing 👍

    2 observations -
Gunsight front forward fender ornaments? Copied Chrysler's Imperial gunsight taillights of 1955-1961? A different era we were so fortunate to have grown up during!
Also, Buz mentions the failures Edsel had with its electronic steering wheel-mounted transmission gear pushbutton selectors, generally with moisture issues affecting the electronics down under the car. Chrysler Corp introduced its pushbutton trans gear selector buttons on all its automatic transmission models - often mistakenly called 'pushbutton transmission ' on its 1956 2-speed PowerFlite and 3-speed TorqueFlite cars, that it continued through 1964. Only the '64 Chrysler 300-K had a conventional console mounted shifter, so Chrysler 300 models continued their pushbutton selectors only through the 1963 300-J. These pushbuttons were cable operated, very reliable, and not at all subject to the issues experienced on the '58 Edsel Citations and Corsair.
Buz's Presidential Red '59 is looking great in this video under the warm Arizona Sun!

Ford, aah I mean Edsel, went to extremes to NOT go with the "norm" or symmetrical aspects with the placement of several pieces.
For instance, the antenna is much more forward and not at all equal with the mirror on the drivers side. The antenna is not even in
line with the gun site. Speaking of which, the fender mounted mirror is also NOT in the "normal" location but, farther forward as well.
The front license plate is not centered. And as mentioned, the script awkwardly splits the door/fender in an unbalanced fashion.

Sorry Lou, but the sound from the engine “drowned-out” your discussion about the brakes! The “tail lights and bezels” may have influenced the design for the 1963 Chevrolet Impala tail lights. My late father rebuilt once the automatic transmission on a 1958 Edsel, with the push button controls mounted on the “steering wheel hub.” As was correctly pointed out, the transmission “linkage” underneath the car would get wet, and freeze. As a result, the transmission would literally “self-destruct” in the winter! Cheers!

Last time I saw a 59 Edsel live, not in videos was in 1960. Not a common car they didn't sell well, this video showing all the design flaws is probably why. I consider the Edsel letters on the door and fender a flaw in design, as well as the placement of the side rear view mirror and the antenna placement. He said that was an aftermarket air conditioner, it may very well been, but it does look like a Ford unit. I believe up into the early sixties the air conditioning units were all dealer installed accessories and were under the dash bolt on units. Lincolns and Thunderbirds may have been the exception to this and had factory air. Somewhere around 1966 to 68, the air conditioning vents and controls were incorporated in the dash. If you didn't get factory air you didn't get the vents in the dash and the under the dash units were available from your dealership. My 68 Falcon had the under dash unit. Most cars that had air had the vents, in 1970 and every year since the cars had the in dash vents with or without airconditioning. Actually by the end of the seventies air was a standard item in all cars even the most basic. I had a 91 Plymouth Sundance America. It was the most basic car sold that year. It had power steering, power breaks, because those were government safety regulations. It had air conditionering, but the windows were manual crank controlled, the door locks were manual, the transmishion was manual and no radio. It had a blank cover were the radio could be. I bought a Sony AM-FM, stereo with cassette deck to put in the car. Back to the Edsel they were considered to be ugly cars with that horse collar grill. They may actually be more appealing now then in 59. Although it probably was a good car mechanically and may have driven well, since it was meant to be between a Lincoln and a Mercury in luxury and compete with Buick, It just was the biggest marketing mistake Ford made until they decided to quit making sedans for the US market.

The Edsel is so butt ugly that it goes full circle and turns into a beauty 😁. I am fairly certain the designers son kept it in the family and designed the Pontiac Aztek 😂. Thanks for sharing
