    G'Day Folks. In this clip I run through a basic Backyard Aquaponic system that includes a solids filter, biofilter with both a media & a deep water culture (DWC) hydroponic grow bed.
    It also includes information on stocking rates, feeding rates, how solids & biofilters work. Some of these subjects I've covered in earlier clips (links below) & others will be covered in greater depth in upcoming clips as I get time to produce them.
    I do hope this helps you out some Pat & sorry it took so long to produce & upload.
    Hope you enjoy this video folks & your gardens are booming.
    Cheers all. 🐟 🌱🍅

      @@RobsAquaponics Is it normal that my house smells fishy? In my basement I have 30 juvenile tilapia in two tanks totalling 130 gallons. The water from the first tank flows to second tank and then from second tank to a 5 gallon solids filter with filter foam and floss. From there it goes to a 20 gallon biofilter, and then pumped to my plants. From the plants the water is circulated back into the biofilter and also to the fish tank.
      The only thing I can think of is that my plants aren't taking out enough nitrates hence the smell. Any ideas please, before my wife kicks them out of my basement and probably me along with them?

      @@pelimo We get a marine like smell around our system but not really a fishy one. Better ventilation may help you out if it's a small basement Freddy.

    For my last system I just fed @ about 13g per m2 of plants per day.
    What was awesome... was that I stocked at a low rate too. So low that I had to feed them 3x a day (via auto feeder what was topped off every two weeks or so) so that they were able to eat that amount of food. It was actually 8x a day when they were fingerlings. lol
    My system was VERY low maintenance, Very resilient, and No solids filter either as the worms were able to keep up and my beds only filled with solids about once every 4 years or so.
    I literally just added water about 1 time a month. Fish feed about once every two weeks. A teaspoon or two of crushed oyster shell every 3 or 4 months. Didn't even have to add chelated iron anymore because I had the bottom 6" of each media bed filled with red lava rock.
    DOWNSIDE... I didn't grow heavy feeder plants in there. Just Lettuce, kale, flowers for transplant, and a billion fruit tree clones. Which, a single tree paid for the electricity for the year. Extremely high cloning success rate too once I figured it out.
    That was a trial 150gal sump tank/ two 50gal bed system. I want to step it out to a 300gal sump tank system this time... and later on I will convert it to a CHOP system when I am ready to expand.
    I was using goldfish and a koi and sold them as they grew... which brought in good money as well. They were some pretty fish!
    I want to do a couple of koi and goldfish again... but then grow out eaters in the side tank this time.

    Love your videos Rob. My interest in AP was sparked nearly 10 years ago when I found the Backyard Aquaponics and Practical Aquaponics forums. I really wanted to build a system then but never got around to it. Found your videos again recently and decided instead of pining for a big system which I can't do right now I will build a simple chop and flip blue barrel with my kids. They're excited and once we come out of lockdown we will give it a crack. We're in NZ so will probably use goldfish or Koi to stock it.

    Wow Rob that was a great video for me at this point in my aquaponics system build up. I have 10x50 liter hydroton and two 150 gallon tanks for the tilapia, and will be using a 70 gallon tank for the sump and a 55 gallon blue plastic barrel for a solids filter. I also have a separate bio filter I made out of a 5 gallon Home Depot pail and a lot of bio balls and some of the stuff you showed but a lot bigger. I haven't been adding air to the bio filter but need to. Anyway thanks and I hope to get all of this in my 10x12 room with some room to move around and grow some duckweed as well a lot to shove in.

    • @caribecastaway6447
      @caribecastaway6447 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great idea to incorporate the duck weed. I use it as a settling final filter to get the rest of the nutrients and any other solids out of the system before it goes back into the tank. It's also a great way to quickly eye ball the efficiency/balance of the fish to plants. Proliferation of duck weed growth = need more plants in the grow beds.

    • @JohnDoe-np3zk
      @JohnDoe-np3zk 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I had a bit of a hard time finding any TBH. Ended up at Lakeway Tilapia who has the tiny stuff and stuff it into a tiny box that I had to pry out of my PO Box! Anyway it is now growing in 3 spots. TBH once again my "aquaponics" pretty much consists of pumping the 500 gallon pond out about 150 gallons into the duckweed tanks and adding back fresh water. Those fish are getting HUGE they are a year and a half old. Getting to be pets now. Anyway I do have the need to grow out my peppers and start growing other stuff once I get everything indoors. I have a few weeks yet. Might have to eat a couple of fish but the main goal is to not only grow plants but see if I can do a breeding colony. Might have to do a third tank out of the room that I will heat up to 82 F. and have the four fish. Got the big daddy white one and some funny white females he seems to like. One is super tiny still a little odd one that doesn't seem to be able to eat properly but has made it this far and too small to eat! Ha.

    Thanks Rob , Its working well , the water has maintained 70F and the lowest the air has gone is 60F when we had 32 below zero F. The only heat is a 4500 watt water heater element in 1 of the tanks . It's looking like the power generated last summer will be plenty to power my house, and power and heat the greenhouse.
    The only issue I have had is snow jamming the casters, making it difficult to turn the building. Planning to put a skirt around it this year to keep the snow out. I just put up photos of the construction on my Facebook page if interested . If you want see the multi fish tank Automatic feeder it is on my TH-cam channel, you're welcome to use or improve it.
    Cheers, Kurt Fischer
