There are places in the world where the same land has been sustainably farmed for thousands of years and is still productive and there are places that farming methods have destroyed the soil in a few decades. Let’s have more of this lady’s kind of thinking.

@@MasterjngReizowolf I think the point was that the water isn't as exposed so it doesn't evaporate as much, though yeah I'm assuming the difference in water saving is smaller if you don't overwater
It also comes at a cost, the water is less likely to enter the aquifers this way, except for the evaporation from the open water area, plant transpiration, and water change for the fish. Also it has a high energy requirement (and operational), initially expensive, and requires almost daily maintenance. Additionally depending on the feed given, the crops tend to lack micronutrients unlike normally grown in soil. There are lots of traditional soil methods that can be used to save water. Like zai pits and swales that basically subsisted on occasional rain alone. But of course they aren’t perfect either, both requires huge amount of land, which is basically impossible in an urban area

We have aquaponic farmers here in the desert southwest. It reduces water usage which is important in a drought prone area. There was a movement to transform swimming pools into aquaponic systems. However, most of the systems here use tilapia which provides another source of food.
Aquaponics is a Re-circular system by its nature idea but also in the aquaculture systems RAS (recircular aquaculture systems) is used… aquaponics in its actual form is basically an aquaculture system where the bio filtration and denitrification (aeration tower) is mostly replaced by a botanical/microbial(roots) system. Those swimming pools could also be cleaned by relative simple biological(plants) filtration instead of the more complex technique of aquaponics which requires daily control/maintenance. This Tilapia fish is in general the most strong and economical fish for aquaculture or aquaponics but it has a relative low nutritional value.
I am typically against aquaponics because it is impractical, ie heavy reliance on plastics. Here it is sensible, as well as done sensibly. She is in a land (soil) poor area so utilizing a materials-intensive system makes sense. This is because this provides a quality food that doesn't travel or store well in an area in need of it. Her use of koi and goldfish is brilliant --because I like them :). There could be more rooftop farmers in large cities. It uses residual heat from the building to the benefit of plants, adds roofing durability by reducing degradation from the sun, reduces air pollution, assists in reducing stormdrain strain, reduces heat island effect, etc. The biggest trick to executing this idea is finding lightweight materials, as well as having reinforced rooftops to handle extra weight loads. Great video
I built a low-cost garden on an old factory roof, and it absolutely thrived. One of the biggest obstacles can be zoning and code issues. Fortunately for my rooftop garden, the local code officer was an open-minded guy who thought it was a great idea, but his predecessor wasn't on board.

I have been doing traditional organic growing for 40 years but switched to aquaponics 3 years ago to meet the challenges of climate crisis we are now in. Water management and truely more sustainable vegetable and fish production. Our thoughts on this type of growing are totally parallel. I really liked how you fought back about the criticism that it is expensive and needs high tech equipment. Yes it can help take the human factor out of growing, but we growers can do produce on the low cost side. Thank you for bringing this urban farming style more to the forefront. I'm retiring from university teaching and research next year in Japan, but my mission is to spread the aquaponics way here in Japan. Keep up the great work you are doing. Fantastic

I'm in Brooklyn and definitely going to check her out. This is very cool, exciting, inspiring and important work. I also love her energy and personality.
Hello, I hope you're safe over there? I hope this year brings happiness, prosperity, love 💚 , and peace all over the world. I would love us to be good friends in honesty and in trust so as time goes on it will bring something great for us in the future, hope you don't mind?. I'm Doctor Christopher Johnson from San Francisco, California, where are you from if I may ask?
Thank you for that video, it was really enlightening! She’s right, kids need to picture themselves as possibly being a farmer.
Always love the land acknowledgement at the beginning of the credits!
We absolutely need more people like her who are brave enough to break the cycle of unsustainable agriculture and start producing food in a way that regenerates our planet instead of destroying the soil and hurting the ecosystem at large. I hope to someday live in a world where our food is grown in small unique farms doing their part to help the environment instead of immense industrial farms using destructive monocultures!
the point about teaching people how to grow their own food touched on something really important. producing ones own food is one of the most powerful things you can do, and the more widespread and accessible it is, the better. Yemi Amu is doing something amazing here
We are ALL connected. We cannot think on an individual level but as a whole. She is an amazing teacher.
ubuntu....i am because we are.
mitakuye oyasin....we are all related.
even that Jesus cat said "Love your neighbor AS yourself."
This series is so good! I'm hyperfocusing trying to take in every word. There's this sense of urgency that makes me feel like I really need to pay attention.
Yemi is an inspiration to us all💖. We need more people like her in the world.
You are a very brillant woman! It's encouraging. Keep up your great work! Keep instructing people... Thanks a lot! 🌹💖🌹
Brilliant! I love "the virtuous cycle" in all it's forms: composting, aquaponics, waste water treatment...

Love it. So much passion and fun with what she's doing.
This is incredibly inspiring to see! Yemi is brilliant! Hope to see her farm educate and expand to help bring food security to more people. Farming is so rewarding and educational! I learned so much from this!

My Kampung in Malaysia started a community garden. We are adjacent to the river but don't use aquaponics and we use chemical fertilizers. I am not sure why. I am composting organic matter for the garden but now, I have another idea! Thanks for letting me know that you didn't know plumbing or fish because I don't know either but I'm willing to fail and learn!
Thank you for your presentation. This is the answer to combatting the adverse effects of climate change. You are angels in human clothing. Keep up the excellence. Africa has some hidden gems the rest of us need to get ahold of. God bless you, your ministry and your blessed nation. I follow you from the Fiji Isles in the South West Pacific.
Truly magnificent. It warms my heart to see this. It gives me hope for people!

We all need a passionate person like this young lady in charge of our food system wow! She’s impacting so much knowledge to future generations just by doing what she loves
Yemi is AMAZING! This was so inspiring.
She is living my mission! I am so inspired seeing dreams in action!
This is a great series and this might be the best episode. Anyone with a "natural" fish tank is trying to achieve the same cycle. I just never thought about using edible plants. Thank you for sharing.

It’s really something about her.. genuine, honest, sincere and inspiring.. love the way she speaks
She know exactly what she is talking about. When I was growing up years ago in the country I wonder why plants like water lilys that flot on the water grow so beautiful and maintain their green levels.Other plants will fall from the soil into the water stream and feed from the water know as "Aquaponic"nownday. IAM GOING TO SUBSCRIBE TO HER CHANNEL BECAUSE SHE HAVE SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION TO SHEAR. I love water 💧/ Aquaponics.
Brilliant method of balancing ecosystem to advantage of humans. ❤ Kudos...to such venture ❤
I am madly in love with this thoughtful, brilliant, beautiful sister farmer! Watching this makes me want to drop everything and move to Brooklyn. God bless her. ❤
This was so amazing and informative! Also, very inspirational. Now I want to try it.
Hats off to this charming and super intelligent lady.
This was the most informative aquaponics information I have received. Thank you for being direct and to the point.🌟👍

Beautiful and important work, I absolutely love this! I myself have an aquarium with shrimp that is keeping my three Epipremnum aureum alive in my apartment. It's a delicat act to get everything right in the beginning but the payoff is a miniature ecosystem in your home.
I can’t believe this video is so short . I felt I learned so much
what a beautiful attitude she has!!
This is so brilliant! Yemi is so knowledgeable and passionate about aquaponics. It’s really inspiring!
Amazing story!
The world would be a better place with more people that have the values of Yemi
Love it.
Wow! I'm so glad you're doing this. Thank you.
13:45 that’s amazing. Using some much less water than soil 😮 this is amazing. We have to get everybody on this. #savetheplanet #issavingourselfs
So inspiring, thank you for your gifts of knowledge sprouting everywhere 😊

The land acknowledgement at the end is greatly appreciated. It very well might just be a small step, and long overdue, but every time I see one I appreciate it. I'm not surprised though because PBS has always done a great job at being respectful and educational. :)
Smart, cute, absolutely delightful! The plants are nice too.😉🙏💜💜🙏
Beautiful system and person! Thank you for giving back!❤
I love this planning urban farm. Reminds me of my business term paper on Health Living back in Averett school in 2019. Good to see black folks growing food stuff and teaching others these life lessons for growth and health.
Fantastic
Smart lady that cares! We need more people like her! Her community needs to support her in her mission!
What a beautiful, brilliant and inspiring lady; we need intelligent people like her running our respective countries.
Kudos to you Ms. Yemi Amu and Oko Farm for such an educational video. Much love and blessings from Trinidad.❤👍🌴
A brilliant presentation by a brilliant presenter! Very informative and inspiring. Lady, you got it going on!
I have goldfish and don't put chemicals in their water. I live in the city and I use their dirty water on my vegetable and flower container garden. My plants love it!!!!
awesome!

Wow this is amazing this can be done in the greatest content on earth. You are such an inspiration well done.
Elle est juste incroyable cette dame. Elle m'inspire beaucoup❤
Awesome Ive been interested in this kind of farming for years and think it's a underlooked option for farm fish for our food supply. It's been a tough year for the ocean with the increase in temperatures and this allows us the option of controlling heat and cold while providing fresh produce and recycling water that is not polluted. Great work!

An amazing farmer making a difference in the world!
would love to see a follow up on how waste is handled, how crops are harvested, and what happens in the winter.
Just pure Excellence!!
This was really inspiring. The water saving aspect is what really caught my attention.
so impressed with your positive attitude and creative approach to growing in an urban (albeit water accessible) environment!! Please post more videos on how you do this !!
I like your work woman...really love it. I'll try to set it up in my garden. Wintertime ill have cover it up with a glasshouse or something. Thank you for uploading this video. Very helpful ❤
An excellent job you do!👏🏾👏🏾💫💫
This lady inspired me.
I love hearing positive stories like this!
