  • He was brash. Politically incorrect. An “outsider” political candidate who rose to the White House, out of nowhere, with a reputation as a “counter-puncher.” But Vice President Spiro Agnew was also something else… an active criminal whose secrets were about to be exposed. What happens when a “counter-puncher” in the White House suddenly sees his political future directly threatened by investigators inside his own Justice Department?

    Since Nixon, I've often wondered what the effect of Ford's pardon has been on American political history. How might the history of the presidency evolved if Nixon was sent to jail and if his principal cronies had spent even more time in jail? Imagine presidential history without Iran-Contra, the PNAC, or perhaps the Republican party as revived by Reagan? I'm certain that we certainly wouldn't be dealing with Trump today. In fact, i confess that I felt a degree of astonishment--not that Republican voters we so willing to forgive but how willing they were feverently wishing to forget the transgressions of the political machine that purportedly represented their interests. Watergate wasn't just about Nixon. Watergate implicated dozens of high ranking Republicans, and with his pardon, Ford implicated himself. Yet, 6 years later not just Republicans but a great majority of Americans almost gleefully allowed themselves to be covered with Reagan fairy dust (and in a truly despicable but entirely predictable fashion, Republicans cheated to win the 1980 race--demonstrating that this group of cretins had learned that the most important lesson of Watergate was not getting caught. In 1980, I confess, that if Christ himself floated down from heaven to run for president as a Republican, I was so disgusted by past GOP actions I would have voted for anyone but a Republican. Unfortunately, it would appear that Americans have the government that they deserve

      Will Bunch had a book about Reagan mythmaking and mentioned that the main reason why Republicans fought Iran/Contra so hard wasn't that they thought that Reagan didn't do it, but that they "didn't want two two-term Republican Presidents in a row to go down for corruption." Their love of power has been damaging our country for decades.

      Well said! Not too many people remember that Ronald Reagan and John Wayne (big conservative heroes) turned in many. of their fellow actors, screen writers, producers and directors over to the McCarthy House UnAmerican Activities hearings, without any valid proof, out of vindictiveness and the desire to climb to the top of the Hollywood elite No.surprise that most of these people accused, were Jewish.. Although none of these allegations were proven true, it destroyed so many lives. Gerald Ford was a weak, inept person and totally unsuited to the role of president.

    I'm Canadian, I was born in 1963. My Dad has always been very up on what's going on in the US. He was a pilot on Canada's only aircraft carrier, Bonaventure, Bonnie to her friends, and had spent a good two years in Pensacola Florida flying subkillers. So he knew a lot of Americans, worked with a lot of American Navy people. He has always been very interested in American history, my love of history comes from him.
    So when the movie "All The President's Men" cam out he hauled my brother and I out to see it. I was probably 14 and my (much smarter) brother would have been 13. I at this point devoured westerns, fantasy, scifi, British mystery...to say I was an avid reader was like saying the Atlantic was a bit damp. But I read NOTHING about the current political situation, I barely knew anything about Canadian politics, never mind American politics.
    We knew something HUGE had happened, something OTHER. So my brother and I went along to the movie, willing to sit through it. And I discovered that even though it had no spaceships, dragons, sorcerers, swords, impossible quests or British detectives, it was still amazing!!! It was about PEOPLE, people who had been dumped on from a great height by the powerful. It was about the hard, grinding slog that journalists have to go through every day, just on the off chance that a little rumor might turn into a monster story. Later I found my Dad's copy of the book. A HUGE book, with NO hedge witches, no warriors, no dragons, no urchin boys who are really the long lost heirs to magical kingdoms, no cowboys, no horses, no detectives!
    And I picked up this monstrous tome, and got stuck in. My little unused brain went gaga over it, because I knew that what was happening was criminal!!!! The people who were in charge of making sure that the US of A was an honest, law abiding democracy, the very people in charge of protecting the Constitution and the Declaration, had become criminals. I was APPALLED!! It mattered to me intensely. I was 14/15, just waking up to the fact that all the things that I had just ASSUMED to be true were solidly true...but now I realized that there were people in this world who were utterly corrupt and arrogant about it.
    It's happening again, in MUCH larger scale, with much more at stake.

    • @elcarto22
      @elcarto22 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It is indeed. "to say I was an avid reader was like saying the Atlantic was a bit damp." You had me with that line. My parents inflicted the 'curse' of reading on all four of us kids, and I certainly passed it on to my own daughter. When I die it will likely be because the bookshelves above my bed collapse on me. ;-) I'm also a historian, and have long ago learned the lesson that what has actually happened historically is far weirder than fiction. What the actual historical characters did (and are still doing) are things that no fiction writer would ever try to get away with. As my late Mother put it, what's been happening these last few years is like Tom Clancy and Hunter Thompson co-wrote a novel while on acid......

    • @anthonynycholas4230
      @anthonynycholas4230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      All the President's Men was a great movie, indeed although it's a pity that nowadays with many hit movies being fictional with plenty of CGI effects there aren't many that focus on key historical events that are enjoyable. I can only think of two movies that fit that category; "All the President's Men" and "The Post" both are set in the late 60s-early 70s "All the President's Men" focusing on Watergate and Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein trying to get the best obtainable version of the truth about Watergate and "The Post" focusing on the Washington Post's dilemma on wether to publish "The Pentagon Papers" or not.

      Thank you for sharing. I'm enjoying hearing about Agnew again as I was a teenager at the time and not paying close attention to Agnew's antics. Afterall, growing up in the 60s and 70s gave us a huge amount of political turmoil to digest lol! I know I didn't like Nixon or Agnew and my father was a firm Democrat and union man, and he managed to pass on those ideals even if I wasn't paying very close attention. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed your comment which apparently inspired me to do some sharing myself lol.

I was furious because they not only didn't lower taxes but actually raised them ... we still call him " nickel nunn . One day while walking pretty much near nothing on an empty "street" in the airport landscape, a limo approached. I knew who was in the back seat. Spiro. I knew because it had been announced he was dropping in. Now there I am, like something out of Hitchcocks' North By Northwest, nothing else around on this road, and here comes this single limo. I turned, facing it's right side, and there was Spiro in the back. I saluted. I made him salute me. I was a mere Spec 4. Off he and his driver went. I kept walking, rather amused and satisfied.

    A lot of hard work bled for this; honed by incredible talent that makes it all flow with apparent effortless ease. The emotions and scars of those that take down the giants are often lost to time; it was a beautiful Herculean labor for them to be given voice and remembrance here. Should predicate a staple/standard for all Government/History classes. Outstanding work. Masterfully well done; both by the 'now' and the 'then' of this circular, rootless, forever, brave endeavor, of a reality that ever lingers, and never truly fades away. History teaches us that the 'good guys' seldom win; but fight to the last, to persevere in the need, for the ones who come after. Who pick from their corpses; the few spoils won. And fight on.

    I've listened to this entire podcast series about five times and absolutely love it. Rachel and Mike did a fantastic job. I had no idea what the real scoop was with Agnew as I was a kid at the time he was in office This puts a who new light on 1970s politics and the fact that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

      🦆 Censorship Loving MSNBC and their veiwers say Democrat Joe Biden and family and his Democrat 'cronies' are 'protected species'. Don't push back too much by exposing their lies or you will end being Censored. 🦆 Robert F. Kennedy Jr. talks about Operation Mockingbird, the CIA’s covert propaganda program to manipulate the mainstream media and the American people through the use of numerous assets who. RFK Jr. brought it up during an interview with Lex Fridman who was completely clueless. It’s funny how Alex Jones keeps getting proved correct, more and more. Media analyst Mark Dice has the story. It’s time to stop defunding the police and to start defunding the CIA, DOJ and FBI. Are you President Trump. It should be his first act when he’s re-elected in 2024.

    Oh how well I remember all of this. Agnew referring to the press as “Those nattering nabobs of negativity “. I had a horrible argument with my dad over the meaning of impeachment. This is how our country wound up with a President we didn’t elect to replace another criminal in the White House. Now it seems that we have repeating history in many ways. We never learn. Is it a coincidence that both criminal Presidents were Republicans?

    Agnew's voice sounds eerily like that of Mike Pence. The resemblance is uncanny. Pence's pace is more ponderous and his language is less imaginative - but if Pence were to recite one of Agnew's speeches, it would be hard to tell their voices apart. Weird.

    No, I don't see it....you only have to compare Agnew's '69 smooth, articulate press attack to Trump's one syllable misspelt tweets. Scalpel v scythe, or rather, Drano. Broad-stroke, ideological brethren maybe (but Trump wouldn't know what that meant). Love you Rach, but little comfort I fear.

    Sadly…all Americans should know about Agnew, and him and Nixon should have been indicted and charged.
    Think of the damage done when the norm became politicians, if high enough up, are effectively above the law.
    Elections can get the out of office, but rule of law means just that…law is paramount.
