Just bought one of these two weeks ago. I absolutely love it. At 5'4", 150lbs, it is a perfect fit for me. I've been riding for over twenty years and it's usually meant compromising by riding something a bit too big for me and just living with it. This is the perfect package. Coming from an older 1983 Honda Nighthawk CB650SC this doesn't feel like a downsize at all. The smaller bikes are so much more powerful these days than the Ninja 250, etc., of yesteryear. 42hp at 370-ish pounds is definitely good enough for this guy. I don't need a 100hp to have fun. Riding a super fast bike slow, at the speed limit, isn't nearly as fun as winding out a smaller bike without breaking the speed limit too much.
Shawn Chegwidden Are the headlights bright, good pattern? And is it LED all around? I ride mostly when the sun is down due to my work schedule in the summer, let me know if i could have a picture or you can describe the front lights please. Thank you for a clear, insightful, and collected presentation. Most other TH-camrs, like chaseontwowheels, tend to be style over substance without weight to their words.
My first viewing of one of your videos and I congratulate you on a job well done. I like your style. I've owned a 2015 R3 for three years and still love it. I have a 2006 Honda Shadow Sabre VT1100C2 cruiser as well and it's a kick in the pants to go between the two. The R3 is so incredibly nimble and spirited, while the cruiser is my go to for highway and longer rides when I just want to watch the scenery go by (while also watching the road ahead, of course!). Oh, and I owned and rode a 2015 FZ-07 for a year before I decided to try the cruiser. The latter are so plentiful on the used market that I may pick up a more current model one day, since Yamaha improved the suspension.
Thanks, Khem! I assume you're referring to the Rebel 300? It's tough to answer that question without knowing what kind of riding you want to do, but my gut reaction would be the MT-03. Those are two great choices and they're priced very similarly, but they have very different riding positions. I don't care for the feet-forward style of cruisers like the Rebel, the MT-03 is a bit sportier and I prefer that. Plus the Rebel makes a little less than 30 horsepower while the MT-03 makes just over 40. Good luck with whatever you choose!

For me personally, the headlights/eyes need to be a bit bigger. And all I ever see when looking at the front is the horn. Wish it was down to one of the sides like most bikes. I’m picking up my Z400 in two weeks. It will be the replacement for my stolen CB500F. Financially wasn’t looking for an upgrade and just want to make sure I’m back on the road this season. Got a great deal on a leftover brand new 2019.
Definitely feel you on the horn. Congrats on the new Z, I'd be curious to hear how you think it compares to the 500F. Did you get a chance to try the new 500X by any chance?
Bike-urious I’ll try to remember to return with comments about how they compare. I loved my 2017 CB500f, had 17000km on it. Very similar power between the CB and the Z, so I’m interested to see how the lower weight changes the experience once I’m putting kms on it. I didn’t ride the new 500X, it seems nice but not the style I was looking for, and not a fan of the newer CB500F changes even though they aren’t drastic from my 2017. Probably would have bought a Z if it had been available in 2017 as my first bike. Didn’t want a 300 but the 400 has stepped it up.
Excellent review. My first visit to your channel and became instant subscriber. I fall into the ‘older guy looking to downsize’ category and am really attracted to the little Yam, but I am 6’3” so will just keep looking.. 👍🏻
Excellent review Bike-urious, thank you, love your speed and clarity of delivery and the music is VERY cool. I'm in Australia, 5' 6" / 28" in seam and considering 'down-sizing' from (don't laugh) a 2016 BMW R1200R roadster. Yes the BMW surely is motorcycling nvirana, dare I say perfection and easily the best motorcycle I've ever owned but, in reality, WAY more motorcycle than I will ever need. Having fun on that is ALWAYS a potential licence shredder - and at 60+ age, I now don't need to go 200 kph plus. As many say, it's much more fun to ride a slow(er) bike fast than a fast bike slow. And I'm told light bikes are just a joy to use, especially when coming down from 240kg/500lb behemoths to ~170kg/370lb light(er)weights - that's around 3 bags of cement difference in weight right there. It seems from all I have seen and read the MT03 could actually be the road-going "Swiss-army knife" of motorcycling and a very excellent all-rounder. It's clearly a competent, comfortable, faithful and fun commuter, but also seems able to do freeways /touring adequately?? Any thoughts on that? If it can happily cruise all day at 110-130kph then I think that will be all I need. Thanks again for a very informative and engagingly delivered review. Keep up the great job and nice job Sir!
great review, getting my MT-03 this week and it will be my first bike, love the ride height since I am 5'8", most of the bikes I have been on always have me tip toeing and uncomfortable.
That horn positioning is super annoying! In recent years Honda moved their horn switch above the turn switch - nearly as crazy as this positioning. I need the horn to stay put between bikes, so I hit it in an emergency. I'm loathe to buy any bike with non-standard positioning...
@@seanconnolly7887 It's from March of last year. I only have a written review: www.bike-urious.com/first-ride-review-2019-kawasaki-z400/ To compare, here's my written review for the MT-03: www.bike-urious.com/first-ride-review-2020-yamaha-mt-03/
I had no issues with the tires, they're definitely good enough as OEM equipment on a small/light bike. They are Dunlop Sportmax GPR-300s, same as on the R3 and the Ninja 400. Lots of good options out there once you burn through the first set if you need more performance!
well as a first bike I would recomend the 03 but given how tall you are the 07 sure is more confortable, also more dangerous for a beguinner. In the 300-500c naked class I think the Duke390 is the tallest but the safest bet for tall people like you will always be the touring/adventure bikes, like the CB500X for example
The master of torque that gets the same, untweaked engine that comes with the R3. Nothing wrong with it but it's a good engine for a sport bike, not a naked. It's smooth, reliable, rev happy but does not offer lots of mid range torque.
Hey Jeremy, No, I don't think so. I'm struggling to think of one situation where I'd want the MT-03 over the MT-07 - the former might be more comfortable for a smaller person, but even then the 07 is still quite manageable. Are you on the fence between the two bikes?
I've asked this on a lot of review videos, but here goes again. Yes, I'm just fishing for opinions: Between this bike and the Suzuki Z400, which would you choose?
I assume you mean Kawasaki Z400, in which case I'd pick the Z400. Just a little bit more power and it fits me better (6'2") Here's my review of the MT-03: www.bike-urious.com/first-ride-review-2020-yamaha-mt-03/
@@Bikeurious Ha, I did. Thanks for catching that. I'll edit the comment. I've got too many models on the brain right now. I'm not quite as tall, so I'm not sure fit would be an issue. Any tips for a new rider trying on bikes at a dealer? I'm not sure if I'd gloss over something (like someone reviewing one of the two bikes was mentioning a ridge on the gas tank being just in the wrong place for their knee) which would be more important some time down the road.
@@Bikeurious That's sort of a yes and no. It's a long story, boiling down to basically ... No, the people I know who already ride a motorcycle aren't the kind of rider I'd want to be. And I do have a friend who wants to get his first motorcycle in a long, long time, but he's glued to vintage bikes rather than modern (which is perfectly fine, and you'd probably also love some of the bikes he's been looking at with a family member who repairs them as a hobby -- gorgeous beasts). So, I'm basically going it alone. My plan is, whatever I buy as a first motorcycle this summer, I'm bringing it home on a trailer, and probably taking some late night rides after work for a bit to get better.
@@thaik56 Unfortunately, I only had a few hours with the bike at the launch and it was all during the day so I can't report back on the headlights. I'm about to do a comparison story with the MT-09 and BMW F900R, so it's going to be a few weeks before I can get a MT-03 and see what it's like at night. Wish I had a quicker answer for you!
This bike is in direct competition with the KTM and the Kawasaki only while the other two models from Honda and BMW are a bit more relaxed bikes. Be ready to rev all the time like a F1 to get enough power, I personally dislike this kind of engine typology because it isn't suitable for commuting.
Sorry, you may be thinking of a different bike. This video was from the US press launch of the MT-03, and at the time it was an all-new model here though it had been around in other countries.
Bike-urious I was interested in the “Naked Series” bikes. Like the Yamaha MT O3 or Kawasaki Z4. I’ve never rode before and want some nimble and comfortable.
@@jamealhill at your height, I'd go for the Z400. The Duke 390/Svartpilen 401 is worth a test ride and I love how little the CB300R weighs, but if it was my money I'd be going to the Kawasaki dealership.
Bike-urious I trust your judgement and Kawasaki was in the top 2. So based on your recommendation I’m going to the Kaw dealership. Thanks and I enjoy your content. I’ll keep you posted.
Can you put this machine against KTM Duke 390? These two come at the almost same price point in my country. I'm 23 and the bells and whistles on Duke are a little distracting.. lol..
Sorry, I haven't ridden the Duke after the updates in 2017, so I don't think I can make a fair comparison for you. You may find my written review helpful if you're looking for more details, though: www.bike-urious.com/first-ride-review-2020-yamaha-mt-03/
no one ever needs the horn so better place it somewhere you wont accidentially hit it.... btw. wasn't it honda who was the one manufactuer that places it differently? no idea since i only rode yamaha and honda so far and yamaha horn placement is standard for me.
Nate, thanks for watching! 2 things: 1.) I vehemently disagree with you that "no one ever needs the horn", sorry. You've never used your horn? I've used mine plenty over the last couple of decades, and it's saved me more than once. I also know I'm not close to being alone in this case. 2.) You're absolutely right about Honda - they recently changed the position of the horn on their bikes, and I think it was a very dumb decision. As I mention in the video, if it's your only bike, you'll get used to quickly, but if you've been riding for years or if you have multiple motorcycles, it causes a problem that shouldn't exist.
Pay attention to the audio volume levels on different tracks. Your music track is significantly louder than your voice track so I'm going from booming music to quiet voice :D
Awesome review! I’m glad they have it here in the US now. I’ve been riding since I was in 6th grade (with guidance ofcourse *wink). Started with a Honda Wave 125, then went up to Raider 150. I’m planning on buying a higher cc big bike. Would you recommend this over the MT-07?
Thanks! That's tough to answer without knowing your size and riding skill, but if you've been on a motorcycle for several years I'd probably go with the MT-07.
I'm 6'2" and a similar weight, so you can hopefully extrapolate what you'd look like from some of the shots in the video. I don't think you'd look too big on it, but you definitely should test ride one before you buy because you may find that you don't have enough room under the sides of the tank for your legs. If you fit, it would be a great first bike. Welcome to motorcycling!
If you're skinny, you could probably make it work. It's close enough that I unfortunately can't tell you for sure, you're going to have to try it out for yourself. Sorry!
You're really at the upper limit of fitting on this bike at that height. Can you get a test ride on one? I suspect your thighs will be constantly rubbing against the tank lip and it will annoy you.
Yup - that's usually how these press events work. We only had a few hours with the bike so everyone goes through the same ride and photo/video stops to make sure everyone gets they shots they need. My focus is more on the website and written reviews (www.bike-urious.com/first-ride-review-2020-yamaha-mt-03/) but I try to create a video when possible. Thanks for watching!
Bike-urious that wasn’t my intention, which was just a comment to get an idea of relative weights. Besides Triumph only give dry weights... take it easy.
@@petewebb6952 Was just trying to understand the context of the comment as there's several bikes that weigh about the same, no hard feelings here. Thanks for watching!
We bought two bikes actually, my brother bought mt 3 and I got a duke 390.. mt is so freaking tiny dude, not comfortable at all for a 6ft + rider plus, don't buy if you're tall also, it's not very punchy so not very fun..
I do not dislike this bike except it's headlights it sucks in my opinion I like the duke 390 headlights but duke comes with its own reliability issues 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I've been riding one since 2016 (I'm in Asia) as a daily commuter. Rock-solid reliability.

No reason to laugh at all, I think you'll be very pleased with the MT-03 (though you should definitely test the Kawasaki Z400 as well).
Nice camera work!
great review, getting my MT-03 this week and it will be my first bike, love the ride height since I am 5'8", most of the bikes I have been on always have me tip toeing and uncomfortable.
Went to the bike shop today just to sit on one of these...yep, it's the one for me!
Good review. Well spoken
Thanks!
in Asia we also have MT 15 which is a 150 cc
Great video 👍 How tall are you?
Edit: nevermind, 6'2" thanks
Y'all think that they'll bring out a xsr300 now? That would be perfect
One can hope!
Finally Europe doesn't get all the toys
Yeah, but I want a blue one!
Ah ah ah ah ah
That horn positioning is super annoying! In recent years Honda moved their horn switch above the turn switch - nearly as crazy as this positioning. I need the horn to stay put between bikes, so I hit it in an emergency. I'm loathe to buy any bike with non-standard positioning...
Have your tried the 390 duke? Im downsizing and im torn between the z400 and duke....also very interested to see the Kawasaki 25r
Sorry, I haven't tried it since it was updated for 2017.

@@Bikeurious thank you appreciate it
Watching this bike for weeks now. Want this really badly in India.
I’m 5.3 and love it that’s a sweet bike
I got one for my wife it was still in the crate they only had black though how were the tires
I had no issues with the tires, they're definitely good enough as OEM equipment on a small/light bike. They are Dunlop Sportmax GPR-300s, same as on the R3 and the Ninja 400. Lots of good options out there once you burn through the first set if you need more performance!
@@Bikeurious thanks made a sub out of me looking forward to more
@@kevincraig8257 Thanks!
I’m a beginner but I am 6’2” Mt07 be a better fit? I do like the design of the Mt03 though
Yes, the MT-07 would definitely fit you better. Just be mindful, because that bike loves to wheelie!
instagram.com/p/BjaBsjSgKGs/
well as a first bike I would recomend the 03 but given how tall you are the 07 sure is more confortable, also more dangerous for a beguinner. In the 300-500c naked class I think the Duke390 is the tallest but the safest bet for tall people like you will always be the touring/adventure bikes, like the CB500X for example
Marco Martins sweet thanks for taking the time to answer my question! I’ll have a look around touring/adventure bikes as well!
Bike-urious haha that’s amazing I’ll have a look around see what I fit on! Sometimes being tall comes with drawbacks! Especially airplane seats!
The master of torque that gets the same, untweaked engine that comes with the R3. Nothing wrong with it but it's a good engine for a sport bike, not a naked. It's smooth, reliable, rev happy but does not offer lots of mid range torque.
Yeah so I guess the r3 is Master of Torque too then lol..

Great review, thank you
How is the vibration on the handle bars sir?
Oh no, that horn position! My biggest hate on the MT07 and MT09, now made its way to the 03. Shame.
Come up with mt05 and Ill buy another motorcycle. I am happy with with Yamaha R3
What place called?
What are the most common complaints for this bike? So far I’ve heard lackluster brakes.
“Under powered” doesn’t count.
Hi do you think for practical reasons this is the better bike than the Mt07?
Hey Jeremy,
No, I don't think so. I'm struggling to think of one situation where I'd want the MT-03 over the MT-07 - the former might be more comfortable for a smaller person, but even then the 07 is still quite manageable. Are you on the fence between the two bikes?
I've asked this on a lot of review videos, but here goes again. Yes, I'm just fishing for opinions:
Between this bike and the Suzuki Z400, which would you choose?
I assume you mean Kawasaki Z400, in which case I'd pick the Z400. Just a little bit more power and it fits me better (6'2")
Here's my review of the MT-03:
www.bike-urious.com/first-ride-review-2020-yamaha-mt-03/
@@Bikeurious Ha, I did. Thanks for catching that. I'll edit the comment. I've got too many models on the brain right now.
I'm not quite as tall, so I'm not sure fit would be an issue.
Any tips for a new rider trying on bikes at a dealer? I'm not sure if I'd gloss over something (like someone reviewing one of the two bikes was mentioning a ridge on the gas tank being just in the wrong place for their knee) which would be more important some time down the road.
@@NobodyWhatsoever It can be tough as a new rider to know what to look for. Any chance you have an experienced friend that could go with you?
Hello, great video! I'm 1.82m and 80kilos. Would I be comfortable in this bike? I will get my driving license in 2 months!
182 cm is not that much , anyway now you got your license what did you get?
I got the green one.22 baby!😎

@@Bikeurious If I may ask, how's the lighting during night time with those tiny led head lights? Both high and low beam?
@@thaik56 Unfortunately, I only had a few hours with the bike at the launch and it was all during the day so I can't report back on the headlights. I'm about to do a comparison story with the MT-09 and BMW F900R, so it's going to be a few weeks before I can get a MT-03 and see what it's like at night. Wish I had a quicker answer for you!
@@Bikeurious I can understand the bike is very new to the American market, I couldn't find any insight on night driving on my side either. Cheers!
This bike is in direct competition with the KTM and the Kawasaki only while the other two models from Honda and BMW are a bit more relaxed bikes.
Be ready to rev all the time like a F1 to get enough power, I personally dislike this kind of engine typology because it isn't suitable for commuting.
this video was uploaded 10 months ago but even then, the mt03 was already in america. unless i’m wrong?
Sorry, you may be thinking of a different bike. This video was from the US press launch of the MT-03, and at the time it was an all-new model here though it had been around in other countries.
There is MT15 also..
I'm 6'2" and am a new inexperienced rider. What bike do you recommend for my height?
So many options! What style of bike are you looking for? Without knowing else about you, my first instinct is Z400/Ninja 400.

These two come at the almost same price point in my country.
I'm 23 and the bells and whistles on Duke are a little distracting.. lol..

www.bike-urious.com/first-ride-review-2020-yamaha-mt-03/
Definitely check out the reliability issues of the Duke. That definitely steered me towards the MT-03.
the Duke has a bit more torque but the 03 it's more reliable with more top end
You looks like you are riding a BMX cycle on MT-03.. And i like your video here..
how tall are you?
Farhan, I'm 6'2". Thanks for watching!
no one ever needs the horn so better place it somewhere you wont accidentially hit it.... btw. wasn't it honda who was the one manufactuer that places it differently? no idea since i only rode yamaha and honda so far and yamaha horn placement is standard for me.
Nate, thanks for watching! 2 things:
1.) I vehemently disagree with you that "no one ever needs the horn", sorry.
Your music track is significantly louder than your voice track so I'm going from booming music to quiet voice :D
new mt 03 2020 or used z300 ?
Sorry - we don't get the Z300 here in the US, so I haven't ridden one and can't compare them for you.
Bike-urious I’m 5’9 and I think the MT-03 will feel a bit cramped. Thank you! Subbed! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Which is better z400 or mt03?
I tried to explain it at the end, it just depends what you're looking for. Personally, I'd buy a Z400.
I'm 5 foot 6. I'd love to ride this one here in India!
Or an SR 400 twin. It doesn't exist! LOL
the only reason i am not considering the duke 390 cuz its not reliable at all. so this is my best option
I weigh 236 lbs at 6'0 can this bike get me up A hill without trouble???
There's definitely enough motor, but I'd take a test ride to make sure that your legs comfortably fit against the tank.
I'm 6'1 200 lbs. Would I look too big riding one of these? It would be my first bike.
Welcome to motorcycling!
what is your height sir? thank you

@@Bikeurious wow,, im going to get one this december,, ride safe sir thank you
