- 樺細工は、18世紀末に、佐竹北家により、秋田県北部の阿仁地方から角館に技法が伝えられたのが始まりとされています。
佐竹北家の城主に手厚く保護を受けた樺細工は、下級武士の副業として広まりました。明治時代に入ると、禄を失った武士が、収入を得るために本格的に取り組んだことで、今日の原型と言える作品が作られるようになりました。
It is thought that Kaba Zaiku dates back to the end of the 18th century, when the techniques were passed on to the people in Kakunodate by the Satake-Kita family of the Ani district in northern Akita Prefecture.
The production of cherry-bark goods was given the patronage of the feudal lord to which the Satake-Kita family was attached and was taken up by lower-ranking samurai, initially as a part-time occupation. Then, when they lost their warrior status at the beginning of the Meiji era (1868-1912), this work became their main source of income and they started producing the prototypes of today's cherry bark goods.

I do not like the fact that they use Nikawa because it is cruel to animals. But the result is absolutely stunning and the precision is breathtaking .
I have commissioned 3 tea containers to a similar craftsman when i was in Japan because she never used Nikawa , as she is vegan like me and the pieces she created are equally beautiful if not more and the precision of the lid if out of this world, and today over 10 years later, the container are still in perfect shape and condition with a beautiful patina . Plus she only uses the bark and wood of trees or pieces of trees that died , never trees that are cut for the purpose. This to me makes it a 1000 times more valuable.

I'm curious... Does Japan have wood carving craft? Most of the work is based on simplicity and delicacy.
There are three types of wood carving crafts: "井波彫刻(INAMI Chokoku)", "一位一刀彫(ICHII-ITTO-BORI)" and "宮島細工(MIYAJIMA-ZAIKU)".
