You know the actor who played Dumbledore in the first two films Richard Harris passed away after the second movie. The actor who plays Dumbledore now is Michael Gambon although he passed away last year.
@44:02 Professor Snape was facing Harry and was angry with him, but as soon as he heard the growl behind him, he quickly turned around and spread his arms out to protect Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Snape knows how to put his feelings aside quickly in order to do the right thing. All the way through to timestamp 44:32 Snape put himself in harm’s way to protect the kids.
You said Gilderoy Lockhart is your favorite character. That he's the Snyder of the wizarding world. I don't know who that is, but I would say this: Gilderoy Lockhart is the Justin Hammer of the wizarding world.
Lupin wasn't helping Black at all until he realized Pettigrew was alive, then he came to the shack to help. So up until that part Lupin thought Black was guilty.
The adults in this film were afraid that if Harry knew about Serius he would go after him to get revenge and as you said, they believed that he was truly guilty and evil.
The one actually helping Sirius into the castle was Crookshanks, Hermione's cat. He's part kneazle, a magical animal very similar to a cat, known to be very intelligent. Crookshanks is very intelligent and meets Sirius as a dog in the grounds and, from then on, he helps him to get around. (That's also why Ron and Hermione keep arguing, because Crookshanks attacks Scabbers, Ron's rat, because he knows he's Pettigrew). Anyway, great reaction as always!
Where in the books does it ever describe Crookshanks as being a magical animal as I don't remember reading anything about this from the Prisoner of Azkaban novel. 🤔
Something they didn't delve into is Sirius, Remus, Peter, and James were all able to turn into animals. They also were the ones who wrote the Marauders Map. Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. Mooney was Lupin because of the Werewolf aspect, Wormtail was Peter as he could turn into a rat and their tails are worm like, Padfoot is Sirius because as a dog he has padded feet (there is also a mythical creature of the British Isles knows as the Padfoot, giant dog creature, which like The Grim was an omen of death), and Prongs was James because he could turn into a stag deer with the antlers. Harry's Patronus also takes the shape of a stag
Also Marauders spent three years learning to become Animagi in order to accompany Remus in his transformations (they became animagi in their fifth year at Hogwarts)!
Yes, this was always a mistake the films made. It should have been made clear exactly who the Marauders were and what they achieved and how close they were.
I feel like it wouldn't have been too much to put that information summarized like this in the movies, someone just mentioning it to Harry, in the movie after the next one Harry even refers to Sirius as Padfoot, but no explanation ever.
Here’s how Sirius escaped. Azkaban is a prison on an island guarded by dementors. Dementors are blind. They sense people and they can sense their emotions. They literally remind people of their worst memories and feed on their happy thoughts. Most prisoners lose their minds if they are sentenced for long. Sirius knew he was innocent and it wasn’t a happy thought so it couldn’t be sucked out by the dementors and it kept him sane. He would also turn into a dog in his cell to keep sim self sane. As a dog his emotions and thoughts were less complicated and the dementors assumed he was just losing his mind. The minister had visited Azkaban and Sirius asked him for the newspaper. He saw the photos of the Weasley family that we see in the movie. He knew Peter was alive and could harm Harry anytime if he was in Hogwarts. So turned into a dog and escaped passed the guards cuz of course he has lost weight in Azkaban and swam to the shore.
Also, the fact that he is an unregistered animagus. I assume if he had been registered they would have taken further precautions for his cell, but as no one was aware (aside from his closest friends, two of which were assumed gone by that point) he could take the form of a dog it gave him a distinct advantage.
Also, Lupin, who knew Sirius was an animagus, was torn all year about telling Dumbledore that Sirius is an animagus, and likely that’s how he escaped. And as one of the creators of the map, knew how to get into the castle undetected.
@@usmantariq7997« I sometimes felt guilty about betraying Dumbledore’s trust, of course he had admitted me to Hogwarts when no other Headmaster would have done so, and he had no idea I was breaking the rules he had set down for my own and others’ safety. He never knew I had led three fellow students into becoming Animagi illegally. But I always managed to forget my guilty feelings every time we sat down to plan our next month’s adventure. And I haven’t changed." Lupin’s face had hardened, and there was self-disgust in his voice. "All this year, I have been battling with myself, wondering whether I should tell Dumbledore that Sirius was an Animagus. But I didn’t do it. Why? Because I was too cowardly. It would have meant admitting that I’d betrayed his trust while I was at school, admitting that I’d led others along with me and Dumbledore’s trust has meant everything to me. He let me into Hogwarts as a boy, and he gave me a job, when I have been shunned all my adult life, unable to find paid work because of what I am.» This is a direct quote from the third book, chapter 18
It was Sirius who slashed the Fat Lady painting, because he was trying to get to Peter Pettigrew (as Rons rat). This is also why ‘Scabbers’ went missing, as he was hiding from Sirius. In the book it’s explained that Sirius saw the newspaper clipping of the Weasleys in Egypt and recognised Peter Pettigrew as Ron’s rat which is why he was trying to get into the common room to kill him.
In the film, Remus realized that it was not Sirius, but it was actually Peter Pettigrew who betrayed James and Lily, only when Harry told him that he saw Peter on the Marauder’s Map. Remember, Remus said, that’s impossible…because Remus thought Peter was dead….
Interesting, that makes sense. A lot must of happened off screen then. Because Lupin seemed to already be in agreement with Serious when they met at the shrinking shack, suggesting that he perhaps met with Serious after Potter Revealed to Lupin that Peter was alive.
Also the film didn't explain the whole fidelius charm. When the Potters found out that Voldemort was looking for them, Dumbledore suggested them to use that spell to share a secret (that was where they were living) with another person. The Potters chose Sirius as their secret keeper, but he was scared that Voldemort would go after him, like that was a predictable choice. So instead, he suggested to choose Peter as secret keeper. And Remus hadn't been informed about the switch. That's why he believed Sirius betrayed them. In fact at the end of the book, when he found out that Peter was alive, he immediately realized the switch and that Sirius was innocent.
Neville was raised by a harsh grandmother. The wand he uses at school was his grandmother's, and (as you've seen with Ron) using another's wand and not one that choose YOU makes a big difference in power and efficacy. Neville was born the day before Harry, same year; he has the stuff to be a great wizard, like Harry. He's clear on what's right and just and has a similar kind heart. All Neville lacks is confidence.
@@chris...9497 Small correction: the wand Neville uses is his father's. This is mainly due to his grandmother's insistence as she constantly compared Neville to his dad and wanted him to be like him but yeah, everything else you said about the effects of the right wand for the right wizard is true.
One of the things that was left out of the movie but was in The Prisoner of Azkaban novel is that James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were the original inventors of The Marauders Map. That is the reason why Professor Lupin knew how to use it. When the original Marauders were students in Hogwarts they were all best friends. When James, Sirius and Peter found out that Remus is a werewolf they decided to become Animagus (wizards that can willfully magically turn into an animal just like Professor McGonagall can turn into a cat) because werewolves don't attack other animals and Remus' friends didn't want him to be alone during the full moon period. This is why the map reveals the weird names when you use the "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" spell. They were the nicknames of the Marauders. Mooney is Remus Lupin because he is a werewolf. Padfoot is Sirius Black because his animagus form is a dog. Wormtail is Peter Pettigrew because his animagus form is a rat. And James Potter is Prongs because his animagus form is a stag. You can not choose your Animagus form. The animal form you turn into is determined by your personality traits. Dumbledore knew about Remus' condition and how Remus became a werewolf when he was only a very small child. So he had the Womping Willow tree planted and had a tunnel put in so that Remus can hide in the Shrieking Shack during the full moon cycle. 🌜🌕🌛🐺🐶🦌🐀🪄🌳🏚
Also, Lupin comes from the latin Lupus meaning wolf. Lupin plants are poisonous, especially to grazing animals, and were said to be as dangerous to sheep as a wolf.
It's also very frustrating they left this out because canonically Harry knew all of this by the time he and Sirius were being attacked by the dementors and it is THE REASON why he was convinced it was his dad, the stag, who saved them both. Without this bit of information that whole plot makes literally no sense. It also sets them up quite badly for the future that they omitted what would have been a pretty small amount of exposition to provide in this movie, as this lack of context for movie viewers continues to leave plot holes throughout the rest of the movies.
Did you noticed how many Weasley children was in the picture where the entire Weasley family was traveling in Egypt? There are actually 7 Weasley children. Bill Weasley is the first born. He graduated from Hogwarts and works in Egypt as a tomb curse breaker for Gringots Bank. Charlie Weasley also graduated from Hogwarts and works in Romania at a dragon preserve. Percy Weasley is a Headboy student at Hogwarts at this point of the series. Fred and George Weasley are the mischievous twins. Ron Weasley is the last male in the family. Ginny Weasley is the last child born and the only girl out of all the Weasley kids. The reason the Weasleys were in Egypt was because they won some money. They decided to visit the eldest child, Bill Weasley in Egypt and with the leftover money buy Ron a brand new won to replace the hand-me-down wand he broke last year in the Chamber of Secrets book. 👨🏻🦰👨🏻🦰👨🏻🦰👨🏻🦰👨🏻🦰🧑🏻🦰👩🏻🦰🪄
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but the reason Hermione's cat Crookshanks always chases Ron's rat Scabbers is because Crookshanks is half Kneazle (a magical cat-like breed of feline, known for their uncanny ability to detect untrustworthy intentions or suspicious activity). So, the period, when Ron and Hermione argue about Crookshanks attacking Scabbers, highlights the fact that Crookshanks knows Scabbers can't be trusted from the off and tries to prevent him from getting to Harry. Also, if you look closely at the Mauraders Map in one of the scenes, it shows the footprints of an interesting character called Newt Scamander. Scamander is a Magizoologist and the Author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a book required by students in the first school year, which documents Kneazles. Newt believes magical animals are only aggressive when disrespected. As Malfoy's blatant disrespect towards Buckbeak results in the "attack" during the Care of Magical Creatures lesson with Hagrid, Dumbledore asks Newt to defend Buckbeak at his trial and that's why we see him on the map. He doesn't physically appear in the Harry Potter octology but he is the main character in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series.
Also remember Crookshanks attacked Scabbers at the store in Diagon Alley where Ron took him for examination. Crookshanks jumped to the counter and chased the rat at first sight. Before Harmione bought him.
@@laylavonmav2587oh my gosh you just reminded me of how Ron held up his little owl for Crookshanks to sniff to make sure he just an animal 😂🥰 Pigwidgeon? I think that was the name… And Crookshanks approved of the owl (I think he purred in approval)!
Fun fact: Harry's family lives in Surrey and then Fudge says they recovered his aunt flying over Sheffield - that's a distance of 180 miles, which means his aunt literally flew halfway across England!
@@lay-dee yeah England is actually pretty small. A lot of people think it’s bigger because they think England is synonymous with the UK but England is just a part of it. Aside from England, the UK has Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
@@lay-dee Yeah, a lot of Americans tend to do that. In a way it's understandable though as it can be a bit confusing to understand that the UK is actually a union of four separate countries as residentfan1521 pointed out. Hence the name "United Kingdom" or UK for short. To make it even more confusing, if you say "Great Britain" then you're only referring to the geographical term consisting of three of those countries, England, Wales and Scotland since Northern Island is a part of its own landmass along with The Republic of Ireland which is _not_ a part of the UK. The United Kingdom refers to the political unity of all four countries as a whole. 😉
Some facts clarified in the book, but missing in the movie: 1) The whole school learns about the boggart showing up as Snape in Neville's grandmother's clothes. And Snape is NOT happy about it. 2) The dementors showed up during the Quidditch match because they feed on positive emotions, and the pitch was full of excitement of the audience - a "real feast" for the dementors, so that they couldn't resist. 3) When Lupin transforms into his werewolf form, Sirius asks: "You didn't take your potion?" In the book, it is explained that Lupin has to take a special potion that cannot prevent the transformation, but allows Lupin to remain sane in the werewolf form so that he cannot hurt anyone, including himself. But the trick is that it has to be taken every single day for two weeks before the full moon, and even if one day is missed, it won't work. (BTW, it is described as a recent invention, so Sirius couldn't have known about it). 4) Patronuses can take two forms: a shield and an animal (the one whom the holder resembles the most; in most cases, it also matches the Animagus form, which cannot be chosen; but Patronuses can change - it's a very rare thing, but it is). For instance, deer are noble and brave animals... but also boneheads with horns!
My favorite things about Prisoner Of Azkaban: 1. The song "Double Trouble". (Which is a nod to the witches from the Shakespearean play Macbeth) 2. Hermione punching Malfoy right in his smug face. 3. The introduction of Gary Oldman as Sirius Black and David Thewlis as Remus Lupin. 4. Harry flying on Buckbeak's back over Hogwarts (SPECTACULAR scenery).
These are excellent picks! I would just like to add the Dementor scene on the train, possibly my favorite scene the directing, buildup, and design is flawless imo
Answers to some of your questions: 1. Sirius tore up the Fat Lady's painting because he was desperate to get to Wormtail. 2. I don't think you mentioned this but Crookshanks recognized both Peter and Sirius for who they really were. She was actually helping Sirius. 3. CCTV won't work at Hogwarts; no muggle electronics will work there. The place is so highly magical that it would interfere with such devices. 4. Why did Lupin not tell the truth. Stay with me, I promise there's an answer. First, as has been mentioned, James, Sirius, Remus and Peter were Prongs, Padfoot, Moony and Wormtail. They created the Marauders Map. With the possible exception of Fred and George, nobody knew the castle better. That includes all the secret entrances. Dumbledore stuck his neck out to get Lupin into Hogwarts. He made special arrangements for his monthly transformation. He set him up in an abandoned house. People thought it was haunted because of the scary noises that eminated from it. That's how it got the name, "The Shrieking Shack". The Womping Willow was planted to protect the secret tunnel that led to it. James and Sirius were the two brightest students in the school. They spent three years figuring out how become animagi so they sneak out of the school to be with Lupin when he transformed. James, a stag and Sirius, a giant dog, were large enough to control a werewolf. Peter was small enough to press the knot on the Womping Willow that "turned it off". They had many adventures and several close calls where Lupin nearly attacked people. They were quite irresponsible. In all the years since he left school, Lupin never stopped feeling guilty. Dumbledore went out on a limb for him again and hired him to teach. In that universe, werewolves were not employable. Lupin simply did not want to admit that he betrayed his trust so flagrantly. If he had told Dumbledore how Sirius was getting in, he would have had to spill all the beans. Also, if my recollection is correct, he didn't think it wise to tell/remind anyone that he was once friends with a notorious mass murderer.

Fun fact: Aunt Marge is played by Pam Ferris who also was Miss Trunchbull in Matilda. For fans of the early seasons of Call the Midwife, she also was Sister Evangelina.
Learning online the actress set to play Aunt Marge was the first time I had ever searched and learned a fact like that online back in 2003 at 13 and was blown away at the perfect typecasting.
🤯🤯🤯 CTM is one of my all time favorites. And for a show that has broken me on many occasions, that episode was one that _really_ broke me. You know the one.
The different look and feel of this movie is because it has a different director. The first two were directed by Chris Columbus; this one by Alfonso Cuarón.
To clarify, Remus Lupin didn't help Sirius into the castle. Sirius likely snuck in as a dog (I forget if it's explained in the book). Lupin believed Sirius was a traitor UNTIL Harry said he saw Peter Pettigrew on the map. Then the gears started to turn in Lupin's head and he pieced together that Pettigrew somehow faked his death, framing sirius. It was only then that he sought to find and help Sirius track down Pettigrew and get revenge. So, Lupin wasn't keeping secrets from Harry until much later in the story. Obviously, it would have been cleaner and easier to tell Harry all of this when he figured it out, but then the twist wouldn't be as exciting from a storytelling perspective.
Don't forget that Sirius had been sighted in Hogsmeade, and that he's one of the inventors of the Marauders' Map. So he knew that there were secret tunnels between Hogsmeade and the castle - after all, Harry used one of those tunnels, so why not Sirius?
We went from the most incompetent teacher (Gilderoy Lockhart, I love him too) to the most competent one (Remus Lupin). I love Lupin so much. Too bad he couldn't stay, but the position of Defence the dark arts teacher seems to be cursed.
Alfonso Cuaron really outdid himself with this movie. It's my favorite of all them and I think it was some of the best acting from everyone in the movie.
And that just happens when Harry finds happiness thinking about living with Sirius instead of his aunt and uncle. That's why he gets to conjure the Patronus Stag with 100 dementors around him.
On the one hand I find the film’s climax a bit frustrating because it shortens one of my favorite scenes and has to skip over some lore I love (ie James Potter, Sirius Black, etc teaching themselves to become animals to keep Lupin company on nights he was a werewolf and how they created the Marauders Map). On the other, I love the gothic and quirky tone and atmosphere of the film, it was the first time the films started to resemble the mental pictures i had of this world when reading the books and made the world feel “lived in”. I also think the various kid actors came off as a lot more comfortable/relaxed which helped their performances. Overall this is still my favorite film of the series, Alfonso Cuaron did a great job with it
I feel the same. However, I find it equally as fustrating that they play Professor Trelawney's prediction for laughs, which causes people to forget it and therefore miss that part of it came true by the end of the film. So that sense of dread in the 4th movie is gone. Like for me, I felt like I (and Harry) was constantly looking over my shoulder because part of the prediction had already come true and it was only a matter of time before the other half did as well.
So they cut out a pretty big plot point from the book here: Harry's dad and his 3 friends made the Marauder's Map. (which the twins found later) Hence the names on the map: Moony (werewolf), Wormtail (rat), Padfoot (dog), and Prongs (stag - James, Harry's dad) When Lupin enters Hogwarts and his 3 friends found out he was a werewolf, they decided to learn animagic so that they can help him out during full moon (since werewolves aren't hostile to animals). They also had a rivalry with Snape, also a student at the time. This helps to explain many plot points: why Harry disarms Snape (Snape basically has a vendetta over the old grudge, and Harry doesn't think that's enough reason to get Sirius executed), why he thinks the guy who summons a stag is his dad, etc.
It should be noted that despite Snape’s hatred towards the Marauders, Lupin included, he still brewed the wolfsbane potion for him every month. Snape went to deliver the potion to Lupin on the night at the end of the film and saw the open Marauder’s map, which Lupin left on his desk. That’s how Snape knew where to go
The twins find it in Filch's box of confiscated items while they're in detention in his office... because the twins and James, Lupin, and Remus might be said to have a lot in common as troublemakers :)
To answer your question: Lupin didn't tell Harry about Sirius because Lupin genuinely did not know the truth about Sirius's innocence until he faced him in the Shrieking Shack. He had a suspicion when Harry told him he'd seen Peter Pettigrew's name on the map because if Peter was alive it meant there was more to the story than he knew, but he didn't recognize Sirius as innocent until they came face to face. That's why they embrace, and Sirius nearly has an emotional breakdown because he realizes his friend finally believes in his innocence and realizes he's not alone anymore (the acting is subtle, but if you focus on his face in that moment, Gary Oldman puts a vast amount of emotion into his expression). There's a lot going on in that scene, so it's understandable to miss it on the first watch. But yes, that answers your question. Looking forward to the next installment! :)
J.K.Rowling wrote the dementors representing the feeling of depression. She was deeply depressed in her past and the way a dementor makes you feel, like you could never be happy again, sucking all joy and color out of your life is how she felt.
The only people who know Sirius is innocent are our trio, Dumbledore and Remus Lupin. Also, the painting was ripped because Sirius was trying to get into Gryffindor tower to find Peter Pettigrew (the rat) but she wpuldn't let him in bc he didn't have the password. That's why he ripped the painting, in frustration. Also, yes, the dog in the beginning was Sirius. In the book, he explains that in his animagus form, the Dementors can't sense him. So he transformed into his dog form and slipped out of Azkaban.
The Ministry of Magic try to keep a tight grip on magics, and for good reason. The Ministry's main purpose is to keep the Wizarding World safe from muggles, who historically have tried to persecute, exploit, or exterminate those with magical abilities. The 'Marauders' break two rules set by the Ministry of Magic: -All werewolves must be registered with the Ministry -All animagi must be registered with the Ministry Werewolf registry is a basic safety issue for both Wizarding World and muggle contact, however it also impacts the life of the individual werewolf when the greater portion of their life is spent normal. The werewolf suffers not just social shunning, but blockage to every life path. For the other Marauders, it was helpful for managing Lupin's 'downtime' safely and registering might have revealed their motivation for learning the skill.
Sirius Black did attack the Fat Lady painting. He wanted to get in the Gryffindor common room to find Peter and kill him. And a lot of people have already mentioned regarding the origin of the map and the marauders and how Sirius escaped! 🙂
Another scene was omitted in the movie. After the attack on the Fat Lady, the painting of a knight took her place and a system of rotating passwords was implemented. Of course, Neville being Neville, he would always forget those… And one night, Sirius would get into the boys' dorms (to capture Scabbers/Peter of course). He had found Neville's cheat sheet with all the passwords for the week, so of course the knight let him in! After that, students were asked to never reveal any password to Neville for the rest of the year, and the poor boy had to wait until someone was available to let him in.
Pettigrew's name comes from the French "petit gros" meaning "short and fat". Other examples include : •Voldemort meaning "Flight of death" or "Theft of death". •Malfoy meaning "Bad faith" or "Dishonest". •Gryffindor from "Griffon d'or" meaning "Golden griffin".
Snape comes from Old Norse "sneypa", meaning to chide, disagrace, outrage, dishonor. And Severus obviously comes from the Latin root for "severe". So Severus Snape, someone who severely chides Harry with outrage.
In the Prisoner of Azkaban book, Professor McGonagall got permission from the Ministry of Magic to allow Hermione to borrow a Time Turner so that she may take as many classes as she like. But taking so many classes with the Time Turner began to take a large physical toll on Hermione. She was cramming almost 48 hours of living into a 24 hour day. She even started having a hard time staying awake during the day. By the very end of the book Hermione returned the Time Turner to Professor McGonagall not only because it was physically getting far too difficult to live that many extra hours in a single day but Hermione began to consider the Time Turner way too powerful of a temptation to use for other reasons. Like Hermione said to Harry, "Terrible things happens to wizards who meddle with time". ⏳️🪄
Patronuses take the form of an animal, kind of like a spirit animal. Harry’s took the form of a stag, which it turns out was also his Dad James’ Patronus. While not hereditary Harry had similar traits of his dad so that’s why it was the stag. Couples can have matching Patronuses too. The reason Lupin took so long to conjure his Patronus on the train was because he was sleeping off a recent transformation and he woke up just as the Dementor was about to take Harry. Fact: at the time this movie was released the actress who played the Fat lady ( Dawn French) was married to the actor who voiced the Shrunken head ( Lenny Henry) on the Knight Bus.
Dawn French who plays "the fat lady" in the portrait who breaks the glass is a famous comedian here in the UK and also one of my favourite humans in the world I absolutely adore her.
Dawn French (the Fat Lady) was once married to Lenny Henry, who voices the talkative shrunken head in the triple-decker Knight Bus. Emma Thompson (Professor Sybil Trelawney) was once married to Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart).
@@PHSDM104this isn’t true. They never would have had scenes together firstly, and secondly they buried the hatchet years ago. There isn’t any bad blood between them.
Fun fact: Snape's actor is such a joker. He put a fart bag in Daniel Radcliffe's (Harry) sleeping bag so when Snape and Dumbledore were doing that Great Hall scene where everyone's asleep, the fart bag would make noise during the speech. 😅 A little mishap: although the intro scene looks cool with the title and all, it's a plot mistake. Remember, Harry is not allowed to do magic on the holidays, no matter if he's under his covers. He would be detected. That first time Harry saw the dog, Sirius barked to warn him to move out of the way of the Knight Bus. Sirius, as a dog, was indeed watching Harry's Quidditch match. Feeling proud of his godson, I suppose. The Shrieking Shack was called like that because that's where young Lupin was kept during his werewolf cycle, long before the Wolfsbane Potion was invented (it allows the werewolf to keep his human conscience). Since he was confined there, he would bite himself, hence the screams. It was the way Dumbledore found so that Lupin could attend Hogwarts. The friends Lupin did were Harry's dad, Sirius and Pettigrew. They found out about his condition and each learnt how to be an Animagus to keep him company. Werewolves don't attack other animals. That's how they got to know Hogwarts better and they are the 4 creators of the Marauder's Map. Moony is Lupin, Prongs is James Potter (he could turn into a stag, which is Harry's Patronus form), Padfoot is Sirius(dog), and Wormtail is Pettigrew(rat).
When Harry saw himself doing the patronus, at first, he thought he saw his dad because he looks so much like him. Seeing his dad gave him the happiness necessary to conjure such a powerful patronus.
I always thought it was happiness because in that moment he knew he had the power and confidence to cast it (believed in himself, finally) because he had already done so, but I like yours too
Yeah as he said, he knew he could do it because he had already done it; and I believe in the book he says the memory was the thought of being able to live with Sirius and leave the Dursleys.
This is the first movie where I think it's very important to have read the book to have a complete understanding of the story. With the painting, it was Sirius who clawed at it, but it was because he was looking for Peter. Also, I don't think it's ever explicitly said in the movies, but the "Marauders" who made the enchanted map are James and his friends; Mooney is Lupin, Wormtail is Peter, Padfoot is Sirius, and Prongs is James; Harry wasn't making up the "abnormally large nose" comment when Snape made him read what the map said, the Marauders just don't like Snape. In addition to Sirius and Peter, James was an animagus who could turn into a stag (a word for male deer). A successful Patronus can manifest as an animal that is significant to the one who cast it; this isn't the same for everyone, some wizards can only cast a "non-corporeal" Patronus, but it's just as powerful. For Harry, it took the form of a stag, and that's why Harry thought it was his dad who cast it originally.
Serius saw the picture of the Weasley family in Egypt. In that picture was Peter Pettigrew in rat form. This is what made him so determined to escape from prison. He was determined to find and kill Peter. I don't know if someone already said this, but all along - until Lupin found out that Peter Pettigrew was alive - everyone, including Lupin and Dumbledore, believed that Serius Black was guilty. So, Lupin was not helping Serius into the castle. There's no mention of this, but Hermione's cat was helping Serius into the castle. Serius, as a dog tore the picture trying to get into the dorm to find Peter and kill him. So, Lupin was a good guy all along.
Oh, Dumbledore not knowing about Sirius’s innocence is one of the topics I like to debate about. The movies don’t really go into that, so it won’t be a spoiler. Dumbledore is the person who cast the charm to hide the Potters from Voldemort and I find it very hard to believe he was not aware they changed the secret keeper from Sirius to Peter. Also, Sirius NEVER got the trial for his «crimes», and Dumbledore, as the Supreme Mugwamp of the Wizengamot (the highest position in Wizarding Britain’s court) must have been at least somewhat curious about that. It could be part of Dumbledore’s Big Plan, but you could research that after finishing the series
Lupin did'nt knew Sirius was not guilty till the moment harry told he saw Peter Pettigrew on the map. He thought till then it was really Sirius who betrayed Harry's parents
Another thing that is not in the movie, but is in the book, is that it's Hermione's cat that was helping Sirius around the castle because it sensed Sirius was not as dangerous & that the rat was. That's the basic jist of that.
Yes, that is Emma Thompson. You might be interested to know that at one time she was married in real life to Kenneth Branagh, who played Gilderoy Lockhart. It broke up in part due to an affair that he had with Helena Bonham Carter who plays Bellatrix Lestrange in this series. Emma went on to marry Greg Wise who she met in Sense and Sensibility. They have been married a long time.
Love the reaction❤ So Sirius did attack the portrait of the Fat Lady, because he was trying to get to Scabbers (aka Peter). No one knew Sirius was innocent until Harry told Lupin that he saw Peter Pettigrew on the Marauders map. That’s why Lupin believed Sirius to be dangerous, just as everyone else did. Also, Sirius escaped Azkaban because of his animagus dog form. Which is also how he snuck around the dementors at Hogwarts, no one helped him. You are correct about how time travel works within this film. Also, that was a Boggart that Lupin used to train Harry on the Patronus Charm. P.S. This film was directed by Alfonso Cuaron, the director of ‘Children of Men,’ ‘Gravity,’ ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien,’ and ‘Roma.’ He’s an excellent filmmaker from Mexico.
FYI: Sirius was.a dog. He could control when he became a dog. Lupin could not control being a werewolf. In the books we learn that Sirius saw the photo of the Weasley family winning the trip to Egypt and Wormtail (the rat Peter Petigrew) was in the picture. To protect Harry and get to Wormtail, he turned himself into a dog and escaped Azkaban. Part of his look is because of the way he had to travel (as a dog) to avoid recapture. Sirius was the dog that Harry saw after he stormed out of the Dursley's house. Sirius also tried to get into the Gryffindor tower to get to Wormtail who was in the room Ron shared with Harry (and others). FYI: Harry's patronus is the same as his father's -- a deer stag. Remember people are always telling him how he looks like his father. No wonder he was confused about seeing himself. And you're right, he is a very powerful wizard. You're quite astute to notice that he makes moral choices. He also does so in the first two. Note how many moral choices he makes from now on. Some are small and some are major choices. Reactors who have not read the books declare this movie and the ones after as their favorite. But this is the point where I became increasingly disappointed in how much they left out. Some parts from this one (like explaining how Lupin knew so much about the Marauders' Map because Sirius (Padfoot), Lupin (Moony), Petigrew (Wormtail), and James Potter (Prongs) created it. And how Sirius, Peter, and James studied out how they could transfigure themselves into animals so they could keep company with Lupin when he became a werewolf. But some major changes in "Goblet of Fire" when movie did not bring back Dobbie whose story line added to our picture of the wizarding world. At the same time they lett out characters such as Winky who complements Dobbie and serves as a foil to help us understand Dobbie's uniqueness as an elf who desires freedom rather than enslavement. And in the next film, they failed to give us Bill and Percy and the conflicts within the Weasley family. This means that when they introduce Bill in #7 reactors question who the heck he is why he's there. None of these things would have taken long to add to the movies either. The directors just made choices to diminish some characters (like Ron) to focus on Harry and then to emasculate Harry to elevate Hermione. In the books, each of the main 3 has skills, abilities, and gifts that contribute to the powerful trio.
I don't know if it's explained in the books, but I've always thought the reason Aunt Marge blew up and floated away was because Harry thought she was so full of hot air that she became a hot air balloon.
51:44 I’m not surprised it confused you because sadly the movie changed and cut some things that were in the book which made this scene so much more impactful. During the training with Lupin, Harry successfully uses the Patronus Charm against the Boggart, yes. But it was a weaker version of this spell, a shapeless shield. A fully fledged Patronus takes a shape of an animal - what kind of animal is personal for every wizard, just like the Animagi form if they choose to become one. I saw many comments already about the backstory of Harry’s dad and his friends, so you know now that James Potter could turn into a stag. So it’s only poetic and fitting that Harry’s Patronus is also a stag. Oh and Lily Potter’s was a doe (worth to remember) because it matched with her loved one. Now, why this scene played better in the book? Harry has no idea until that point what animal his dad could turn into. While Lupin and Sirius were explaing their backstory, Harry tired to ask about it but was interrupted. He only knew his dad’s nickname was Prongs. And then, he conjured his Patronus and saw a silver stag galloping through the lake, driving the Dementors away and returning back to him. As it does, Harry says „Prongs” because in that moment he understood. It’s still my favourite movie out of them all. It always stuck out to me and over the years i understood it’s because of the director. Did you notice how many long shots and cool transitions it had? But sadly it is also the first that starts diverting from the books, because the changes made in the first two movies weren’t that big.
So about the “Fat Lady” it was Sirius that attacked her portrait but only because he was trying to get to Peter (the rat) because he knew he was probably in there. Also Crookshankes (Hermione’s cat) kept trying to capture Peter not just because he is in the form of a rat but because Crookshankes is highly intelligent and knew that he was actually human.
Tom Felton, when he was a kid - who plays Draco Malfoy. He was scared of the talented man who played his father; because he got so much into his role, and went from 'evil', to 'are you okay?' when they cut from the scene 😅 Poor guy, haha
Professor Lupin did not know Sirius Black was innocent until he realized that Peter Pettigrew was still alive and hiding as Ron’s Rat when Harry told him about seeing Pettigrew on the Marauder’s Map.
One of the things in the novel that didn't make it into the film was the way Sirius was coordinating with Crookshanks, Hermione's cat, to try and hunt down Wormtail. It's not a huge deal but it is a detail that I wish had been utilized on screen.
one of my favourite details that you only notice by rewatching is that Sirius went to check up on Harry at the beginning of the story and called the Knight Bus for him :)
@14:21 The late Sir Michael Gambon was also filling some big shoes, taking over the role of Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore from the late Richard Harris. R.I.P. to both of these legends of the stage and the silver screen.
So, Lockhart does make another appearance later in the books, but not in the movies though there's a funny after credits scene in chamber of secrets I believe, that just shows that even with his memory gone he's written another book though this time it's about his lack of memory. In the books, he's a permanent resident at a magic hospital. When Harry and a group of his friends visit the hospital, they run into him(still missing his memory) asking if they want his autograph.
One "problem" with the early Harry Potter movies was that directors and screenplay writer had no clue where the story arc was going. Only J K Rowlings knew for sure, and she did not tell anyone (except one actor who really needed to know the characters endgame to see it through). So the movie makers sometimes had difficulties with knowing what to choose to bring to the movies from the books, and what they could leave out. The books are so much more, with more characters, more twist and turns, and also sometimes to be fair, a wee bit boring. In the first book Hermonie beat Snapes trap with logic getting to the stone. I was so disapointed the movie makers made her so soppy, staying behind with Ron, and only solving something by being "passive". In the book she beat Snape big time by solving his riddle as a first year student at Hogwarts.
The forth book was published before they started to work on this movie, and the fifth book was published about one year prior to the premiere of this movie. And AFAIK, they consulted JK Rowling about some details.
This has always been my favorite of the books, which is why I’m so happy that the film ended up being my favorite too. This is the only film of the series directed by Alfonso Cuaron and I absolutely love the tone, feeling & ambience he gave it.
You guys are too cute and obviously so happy together! ❤ 54:18 i LOVE Lupin! He's my favorite side character of the entire franchise! Hermione is my favorite.
I must say, when Harry flies around on Buckbeak.. it's my favorite scene from the entire franchise. Imagine you're him, you've lost your family and got treated like garbage by the rest of your so called family. I thought that this was Harrys absolute sign that he is "free" in some kind of way, everytime I see it I get a little teary. Great reaction as always, it is so much fun rewatching these movies with the both of you. Keep up the good work guys, we're here for more! ❤
Think back to the first film, when the student line up to call their broomsticks into their hands... Hermione was so frustrated, because she struggled to get it to obey. And here's Hermione on Buckbeak's unsaddled back, flying hundreds of feet over Hogwarts. She says she doesn't like flying. For a muggleborn, flying HAS to be outside their comfort zone. I will say, it seems every wizard/witch has a particular innate talent that is expressed early. -Harry: flying (and an affinity with glass) -Hermione: spellcasting -Hagrid: magical beasts -Seamus: explosives -Snape: potions -Dumbledore: fire (this becomes more obvious as the franchise goes on, but the rare phoenix is a BIG clue) I would also say Lupin knows the subconscious (which makes him a great teacher and counselor, especially for those entering puberty). Argus Filch is a squib (a nonmagical child of two magical parents), so can be considered 'handicapped' but is assisted by his 'service' cat who locates out of place students for him. Keeping track of the students is a driving force for him, but he has no magical power to assist him in what he feels in his bones to be his purpose.
I read the books, and I love the movies because I feel they stand on their own. For one thing, the cast is amazing, and although the movies lack some of the context, they still do a good job of bringing the story to life.
i'm so far in your guys reaction videos and catching up, so not sure if you'll see this but here are some facts about prisoner of azkaban : - in the film, professor trelawney tells harry that the dark lord (voldemort) will rise again and while it takes another movie to happen, she's correct. she also says that a servant who has been changed for 12 years will help, which turns out to be right as well. peter pettigrew has been ron's rat for that length of time, and he plays a key role in making voldemort rise once more. - originally the script called for hermione to slap malfoy as opposed to punching him. during rehearsal for the scene tom felton told emma watson to slap him, however he had intended for her to not actually hit him, and thus was taken by surprise when emma smacked him across the face as hard as she could. emma said she felt terrible about it afterwards and didn’t know what she was thinking. - harry melling, who played dudley dursley had to wear a fat suit. throughout the filming of his scenes, he had to add the suit underneath his costume in order to make sure he looked the part. melling had actually lost a lot of weight in between the second and third movie. - professor lupin can be seen munching on some chocolate. he gives it to harryn their first meeting after he is attacked by a dementor as a way of calming him down. he does this again later in the film and seemingly always has some on him. this is because lupin is addicted to chocolate and this was done to show him doing everything to stop the werewolf coming out to play. the reason for this is that chocolate is toxic to dogs and therefore constantly eating it was his hope to make sure that he didn't turn as often. - during the filming of the sleeping bag scene, director alfonso cuarón, michael gambon, and alan rickman played a practical joke on daniel radcliffe (who had requested to have his sleeping bag next to a girl whom he liked at the time) by hiding a remote-control-operated whoopee cushion in his sleeping bag. according to cuarón, daniel tried really hard to stay in character while everyone else was laughing. - the bats seen flying around in hagrid’s hut are real. they were particularly challenging to train, and daniel radcliffe noted that they tended to urinate everywhere. the animal trainers kept the bats under control using food-rewards. - in the scene where harry sees peter pettigrew’s name on the map, but does not actually see him in the hallway, the sound of a rat scurrying about is faintly audible. - during filming, all of the pockets on tom felton’s robes were sewn shut to prevent him from sneaking food on-set. - earlier in the film when harry opens up the map lots of different people can be seen roaming around hogwarts. while he focuses on an interesting name that he thought was dead, there is another name that should catch potter's eyes. that is newt scamander, who appears to be in hogwarts. of course, now fantastic beasts has been made, fans are aware of who he is more and the fact he is friends with albus dumbledore, but it is fun that they put him in during the original series.
This franchise does a great job keeping as faithfully to the books as possible given how rich and detailed the source material is. If you are book lovers I highly recommend reading these books after you have finished the film series. I read these books as they were released and eagerly waited in line outside the book shop for the next new release. By the last book the queue was massive and people were sitting in parks, cafes and on public transport devouring the story to find out how the story concluded.
except in this case: Harry doesn't receive the Firebolt at the end of the book. They do have confirmation of who bought it for Harry, but in the book he gets it sent anonymously as a Christmas gift.
Speaking of my favourite humans Emma Thompson is in this too what a legend. If I could hang out with her and Dawn French I'd be one happy girly. She was really good friends with Alan Rickman too.
"Why did Serious Black attack the painting?" He was frustrated that The Fat Lady wouldn't let him in. He wanted to see Harry, not attack him, and he didn't know the password. Serious Black did not intend to harm The Fat Lady. To be fair, she can get a little overly dramatic.
Harry's patronus is stag, which was his dad's too. Patronus takes shape of your spirit animal. Time travel in Harry Potter universe is basicaly a time loop.
Gilderoy Lockhart is not in any other movie but it is in the books. Many characters had to because movies are shorter and they needed to cut stuff. Now a bit of context about Lupin and friends: He has been a werewolf since he was studiying in Hogwarts and his friends, Sirius, James and Peter learned how to be animagus because they wanted to be with him while he was in werewolf form. But beign an animagus is difficult and is very controled by the ministry... so they basically are illegal animagus.
To your question. As a reader I usually know what happens in many movies so I loose the surprise but ot is equally exciting to actually see in a screen what it is in your head when you are reading. It kinda comes to life.
Which is why the Ministry never thought about looking for a black dog when Sirius escaped from Azkaban (nor for a rat when Peter vanished)… nobody knew that they were Animagi.
Harry Potter and the prisoner of azkaban is definitely one of my most favorites in the franchise. I love how dark this movie is. love your guys reaction. Can't wait for you guys to see the rest of the films.
This movie was the major turning point in the entire series. It was much darker than the first two, and it just gets darker and darker from here. The next one, Goblet of Fire was actually the first book in the series I read, and that might be why it ended up being my favorite book, but my favorite movie is 5. Love them all though.
I think Sirius attacked the painting of Fat Lady because he wanted to get into the Gryffindor's common room. Either to look for clues to see if Peter was there (he knew he was alive, but no one believed him), or to have a one on one conversation with Harry, to explain to him he wasn't actually the bad guy.
Sirius Black is an animagus who can turn into a dog this helped him survive and Azkaban since the effect of the Dementors wasn't as bad when he was in his animal form and they don't see the way humans do so this also helped him Escape as a dog I didn't really see the dog as a prisoner. He escaped after he got hold of a newspaper that showed the Weasleys in Egypt on their vacation took after winning some money in the picture he saw the rat wormtail who he knew was Pettigrew which gave him the drive to escape and get Pettigrew especially since he knew that Harry was now at school and he felt the need to protect him. It was said that people had heard him right before he escaped saying he's at Hogwarts everyone assumed after he escaped that he meant Harry Potter and was going after him but what he really meant was Peter Pettigrew who he was after to avenge his friends and protect Harry. Yes that was Sirius Black in dog form that we saw at the beginning however when he fell he has one arm got thrown up which is how you signal the Knight Bus to come get you which is why it showed up and took him away Remus lupine was not helping Sirius Black get into the castle he was also thinking he was guilty until Harry told him about seeing Peter Pettigrew on the map the map was made by the Marauders which was serious black padfoot Remus Lupin Mooney James Potter Harry's dad prongs and Peter Pettigrew wormtail Scentsy helped make them up a new how it worked he knew that Peter Pettigrew had to be alive and if he was alive obviously serious black hadn't killed him so that let him figure out that he was innocent so when he saw serious black drag Ron and Pettigrew into the tree on the map he ran out to go help forgetting his potion that would let him keep his mind as a werewolf. Severus Snape had the potion and since Lupine hadn't come to get it he took it to Loop and loop and wasn't there but the map was and again he saw Lupine running off to the Whomping Willow and followed which is how we ended up with first Loop Inn and then Snape showing up at the shrieking Shack where we were having our Showdown
In the books there is a lot of hints at Scabbers being more than just a rat. Croockshanks, Hermione's cat, takes a bigger role as well. Helping Sirius at trying to kill Peter. Sirius escaped Azkaban after seeing Scabbers in the news with the Weasleys at the pyramids. And, fearing for Harry's safety, he escaped transforming into a dog and going through the cell bars. Dementors specialize at hunting humans and have problems noticing other creatures. Also, he and his friends (James and Peter) became Animagus in secret. So the minister of magic didn't know he could transform.
Lupin was not helping Sirius in anything, he also thought that Sirius sold Harry’s parent until Harry told him about seeing Peter Pettigrew on the map. That's when he realized Peter was the one betraying them
Love this reaction so much. Well done both of you. Sirrius was trying to get Scabbers from Ron’s bedroom because Sirrius knew Pettigrew could change into a rat and he recognised him in rat form in the newspaper photo of Ron in Egypt. As the series goes on it’s fascinating watching the main characters mature. Looking forward to the next one.
I know it sounds like any other book based movie haha, but there are important things missing that you would only get if you read the books, is so cool that you get into this world and you like it, I'm so happy to have new people getting in this world for the first time, here I let you the most important points maybe you missed by only watching the movie in case you'd like to know 😅... - The people who wrote the marauder's map are, profesor lupin, sirius black, Peter petigrew and harrys dad (mooney, padfoot, wormtail and prongs), that's why lupin knows about the map that well, because he wrote it with his old firends, peter betrayed them, he only wanted to be part of the ''cool guys'' along with the other three. - Lupin, Potter and Pettigrew made an unlicensed spell so they could turn into animals -animagus- (bc in the books all animagus have to have license to transform, like profesor McGonagall), but they did that undercovered, so they could be around Lupin when he transformed into a werewolf and keep the secret, since werewolves cannot choose to transform unlike animagus, and they spilled the rumour that that house was haunted so nobody could approach and find them, all the screams and stuff people talked about were not ghosts but them. - The time turner was given to Hermione by profesor McGonagall, since staring third grade you have the option to have optional subjects, and Hermione didn't want to miss any (becase, you know, is hermione 😂) so McGonagall gave it to her, not before advising the danger of time travelling, but she really trusted her because Hermione was the smartest student (and maybe the smartest witch at the time). - The patronus in the books is not that ''mirror kind'' of white light we see in this movie, there it a small part that is shield like, but most common and powerful is a corporeal one, all patronus have their own creature shape, harry's patronus is a stag deer, like the animal his father transformed into as an animagus, that's why he thought the one that he saw in the lake was his dad, because in the books sirius explains that to him. I thin this change was just a creative license Alfonso Cuaron took, maybe by that time he thought it wouldn't be an important change, but it was a huge one in fact 😵💫, you will see in the next movies the importance of the patronus shapes. I won't spoil you more, but I wanted to clarify that. Thank you if you read me! Sorry if it was to large, but I really think these are the most important facts they cut off the book that really help people understand a little bit better all the things that happened in this movie. I really enjoy watching your reactions, I'll be here every time you upload new videos, can't wait to see the rest of them! 😄
Lockhart does show up again but I can't remember if it is just in the books, he is in St Mungo's Hospital.... He is considered insane, when Harry, Nevil and friends visit Neville's parents who are at the same hospital we come across Gilderoy.... This could be in book 5..... I only mentioned this as it doesn't disclose the plot in any significant way..😃
The end of the book goes into more detail on the implications and who knows what but i always loved this exchange between Harry and Dumbledore: "Last night I thought it was my dad who'd conjured my patronus. I mean, when I saw myself across the lake, I thought I was seeing myself." "An easy mistake to make," said Dumbledore softly, "i expect you'll tire of hearing it but you do look extraordinarily like James, except for the eyes... You have your mother's eyes. " Harry shook his head. "It was stupid, thinking it was him," he muttered, "I mean, I knew he was dead." "You think the dead we have loved ever truly leave us? You think we don't recall them even more clearly in times of great trouble? Your father is alive in you Harry, and shows himself most plainly when you have need of him. How else could you produce that particular Patronus? Prongs rode again last night." It took Harry a moment to realize what Dumbledore had said "Last night Sirius told me all about how they became Animagi," said Dumbledore smiling. "An extraordinary achievement -- not least keeping it quiet from me. And then I remembered the most unusual form your Patronus took when it charged down Mr. Malfoy at the
The books are incredible, I’m sure I’m not the only one who read them several times, and before watching the movies. It’s still a great pleasure watching them to me, and there are differences anyway.
I think y'all would love the books. More details and explanations. Plus a lot of stuff had to be left out in the interest of time. However in some instances they decided to focus on the wrong thing or insert stuff not in the books while leaving out vital information. J.K. Rowling says that the dementors are her physical representation of depression.
Re: what happened to the painting? Yes, it was Sirius who attacked the painting of the fat lady. Everyone assumed Sirius was trying to get to Harry when he attacked the painting. But that's not correct. Sirius was actually trying to get to Scabbers the rat (who was Peter Pettigrew). Sirius was worried about Harry's safety when he realized that Peter Pettigrew was at Hogwarts with Harry (given that Peter had caused the death of Harry's parents). Sirius was trying to protect Harry - not harm him.
The Fat Lady did see Sirius. He was hunting for Peter Pettigrew. He was the only one who knew it was Peter that betrayed Harry's parents. Peter got away and was running from the castle which is why Harry saw him in the hallway...which tipped off Lupin about Peter being alive. As for the bus, yes, it was Sirius. He was watching out for Harry, knowing Peter was still out there alive (since he didn't actually kill him.)
Very few wizards and witches can cast a Patronus Charm. And even fewer can cast a Corporal Patronus. You have to be very powerful to be able to do it. When a wizard can cast a Patronus in corporal form it will take shape of an animal kind of like how an Animagus can take shape of an animal in a way. And just like an Animagus the Patronus shape is determined by the wizard's personality traits. Your Animagus shape is determined by your personality traits and your Corporal Patronus is determined by your personality traits as well. The difference is that you can learn to do a Patronus just by learning the spell and thinking of your most happiest moments in your life. But becoming an Animagus is a highly complicated procedure that not only uses spells but a very complicated potion that takes ages to make. Just for example, the first thing you have to do is to hold a Mandrake leaf in your mouth for a whole month just for starters. As you saw, you don't have to do any of that to learn a Patronus charm. The shape of a patronus can change depending on major traumatic events whether bad or good that can happen in your life. In Harry's case, it took the form of both James Potter's (Harry's Dad) animagus and Corporal Patronus form. It's understandable why it happened because his Corporal Patronus appeared just as he was waiting to see his father appear but then realized it was himself that casted the Patronus all along. He was already thinking about his Dad and had very powerful feelings about it. But it was also knowing that Harry could do it because he already saw that he did gave him the powerful confidence to be able to achieve it. 🪄🦌✨️ By the way, the author, JK Rowling got the idea for the Dementors from the deep serious depression that she suffered when she was a young divorced poor single mother. Dementors is the symbolic embodiment of chronic depression. That is why you need to think of your happiest memories to create a Patronus Charm in order to fend off Dementors. That is also why chocolates are used to help alleviate the effects of Dementors. When some people are depressed they might eat their depression away with certain foods. Real world scientists say that chocolates are one of those foods that have a chemical in them that can give the consumer a tiny bit of euforia. 😣🤔💭😄👍🍫
It's been almost 20 years since I read the book, so I'll tell you as much as I can, and welcome corrections. Remus thought Sirius was the one who murdered Lily & James, until the evidence of Peter Pettigrew came out. Remus knew to go to the womping willow because of the map. Snape was taking Remus's potion to help him through the full moon, then saw the map, who was there, and headed to the womping willow as well. The womping willow was planted to help Remus stay in Hogwarts while he was a werewolf. A place had to be created to conceal his changes, and create things to explain certain things such as staying out of the woods due to werewolves. This refuge for Remus had to be hidden, so Dumblydorr took measures to help him, making a tunnel to the shreaking shack, how to placate the willow, etc. Remus's friends helped out as well. James, Peter, and Sirius learned to change into animals (all animagus) so they could visit him, and not be attacked. It's also how Sirius escaped Azkaban, and enter Hogwarts, was through turning into a big, black dog. One of the things that dementors don't recognize is the consciousness of nonhumans. Oh, lastly, Dumblydorr was a mad genuis wizard, known for this, so POA's take is my fav take of him out of all the films, until the very end.
This is my favorite of the Harry Potter movies! Its so fun seeing people watch it for the first time and not knowing the time travel twist. I still cry when they "kill buckbeak" lol
Sirius's animagus is an Irish Wolf Hound and that's why he fights Remus (actually watching over him). In the books we find out that Sirius stays in his animagus form and roams the school grounds and even becomes friends with Hermione's cat, Crookshanks. 😊 While he's a dog his human "essence" is not detectable by the dementors. Dawn French, aka the Fat Lady, is a beloved English comedian (Vicar of Dibley). She did a lot of work with Jennifer Saunders who was in the Britcom Absolutely Fabulous (and also played the step-mother to Emily, Ross's second wife on Friends). One thing that I realized when re-reading the books was that the Dursleys have four bedrooms: master, two for Dudley, plus a guest room. Still, they were so petty that they made Harry sleep under the stairs! The only gave Harry one of Dudley's two rooms begrudgingly upon his return from his first year at Hogwarts.
My introduction to Dawn French was "The Vicar of Dibley", which was a wonderful comedy series on BBC. If you can find episodes on TH-cam, you WON'T be disappointed.
The last of the Potter films to be scored by John Williams. This is the best score for the Potter films he made. This has some real standout pieces, notably "A Window to the Past" and "Buckbeak's Flight".
I love both of your reactions to the film! Also how you try and guess what's going on and how you both sometimes guess exactly what the twist is or slightly get it right LOL. Also, the actor change for Dumbledore was because the first actor Richard Harris died, I think? He took the role only because his grandkids, I believe. The books are great because you get a lot of information you can't pass on in movie format. And more and more will get cut out because the books kept getting thicker with Order of the Phoenix being the largest I think? I love the books, but I also enjoy the movies. A friend of mine said, "Just pretend the books and the movies are alternate realities of each other. The same but different. Thank you for another wonderful reaction!
Re: how did Sirius escape from Azkaban? He changed into his dog form - this was able to trick the Dementors because they couldn't sense any human feelings from him. That enabled Sirius to sneak by the Dementors, who can only sense human emotions.
I'm sure many people have said this already but Lupin was not helping Sirius get into the Castle. Lupin had believed all along that Sirius was guilty of causing the deaths of James and Lily. It wasn't until near the end of the story - when Lupin learned that Peter Pettigrew was still alive - that he realized Sirius was innocent and that Peter was actually the one who betrayed James and Lily (and scape-goated Sirius).

Prisoner of Azkaban is DEFINITELY my favorite book and movie in the Harry Potter series! 😊 RIP Malfoys nose, and well done Hermione! 😂❤
The romance between Dumbledore and Snape is not revealed until the last movie. Don't spoil it.
And Crookshanks was the "man on the inside"
@@atorothcassidy4866 my cats are🤣🤣
the way Sirius slipped past the dementors was in his animal form. Dementors sense human emotions, but animal emotions aren't the same for them.
Yep. The moment he saw Pettigrew on the map his entire view changed.
@@TheStormblooper-100it’s in there. Confirmed. I read it again recently.
@@theonewhoknows2 It's in the Prisoner of Azkaban? Can you tell me the page number or name of the chapter?
@@TheStormblooper-100 this was never mentioned in the book, rowling just said it on her website as a easter egg or something.
Huh. This sounds like SuperCarlin brothers' theories taken as facts by viewers, lmao
Where is that info
Really appreciate you explaining this!
Came here to say just this.
The movies never really make it clear.
It's the"swam to the shore"part I find particularly hard to believe.
Please read your comment and fix the mistakes. It gave me a headache.
And I haven’t changed."
Lupin’s face had hardened, and there was self-disgust in his voice. He let me into Hogwarts as a boy, and he gave me a job, when I have been shunned all my adult life, unable to find paid work because of what I am.»
This is a direct quote from the third book, chapter 18
It was Sirius who slashed the Fat Lady painting, because he was trying to get to Peter Pettigrew (as Rons rat). This is also why ‘Scabbers’ went missing, as he was hiding from Sirius. In the book it’s explained that Sirius saw the newspaper clipping of the Weasleys in Egypt and recognised Peter Pettigrew as Ron’s rat which is why he was trying to get into the common room to kill him.
I would have loved watching Sirius in Gryffindor's rooms with a knife over Ron. That was also missed from the movies.

@@Rhodair yeah! This Ronald is gold!!!

Neville is braver than people realize. He literally faces his worst fear every day in class
@@chris...9497 Neville got slept on in the series.

🌜🌕🌛🐺🐶🦌🐀🪄🌳🏚
Which is also how the Shrieking Shack got its name, because people would hear Remus's screams as he was transforming.
Also, Lupin comes from the latin Lupus meaning wolf. Lupin plants are poisonous, especially to grazing animals, and were said to be as dangerous to sheep as a wolf.
Same I wish that was in the movie
I hope the upcoming series dive deep into this lore!!!

Long time HP fan and I never knew this!! (about Newt being in the map) Whoaaaaa

Also remember Crookshanks attacked Scabbers at the store in Diagon Alley where Ron took him for examination. Crookshanks jumped to the counter and chased the rat at first sight. Before Harmione bought him.

@@lay-dee yeah England is actually pretty small. A lot of people think it’s bigger because they think England is synonymous with the UK but England is just a part of it. Aside from England, the UK has Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
@residentfan1521 that's pretty neat. I tend to mix up UK and England, but I get it now. Thanks for explaining 😊
Some facts clarified in the book, but missing in the movie:
1) The whole school learns about the boggart showing up as Snape in Neville's grandmother's clothes.
And Snape prepared the potion for Lupin.
The wolfsbane potion kind of parallels HIV prophylaxis imo.
My favorite things about Prisoner Of Azkaban:
1. The song "Double Trouble". (Which is a nod to the witches from the Shakespearean play Macbeth)
@@nickreacts6394 Oh, hell yeah. That just felt like someone was gonna die in that moment.
Answers to some of your questions:

My favorite Harry Potter movie. Most fans will confirm that the books have so much more interesting content. Be sure to read them.
Geez, I wonder why. 😅
Spoiler from the books:
The position was jinxed by a dark wizard that was angry that Dumbledore refused him the job.
🌝
Alfonso Cuaron really outdid himself with this movie. It's my favorite of all them and I think it was some of the best acting from everyone in the movie.
He really did bring out some real maturity from such young actors. I wish he stuck around for the rest of the movies.
Fun fact: In the books, passing through a ghost feels like a cold shower
“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light”
-Dumbledore
So they cut out a pretty big plot point from the book here:
Harry's dad and his 3 friends made the Marauder's Map. (which the twins found later)
Hence the names on the map: Moony (werewolf), Wormtail (rat), Padfoot (dog), and Prongs (stag - James, Harry's dad)
When Lupin enters Hogwarts and his 3 friends found out he was a werewolf, they decided to learn animagic so that they can help him out during full moon (since werewolves aren't hostile to animals).
Her Dementors creation is also basically a spin on the mythology of The Grim Reaper.
The 'Marauders' break two rules set by the Ministry of Magic:
-All werewolves must be registered with the Ministry
-All animagi must be registered with the Ministry
Werewolf registry is a basic safety issue for both Wizarding World and muggle contact, however it also impacts the life of the individual werewolf when the greater portion of their life is spent normal. The werewolf suffers not just social shunning, but blockage to every life path.
For the other Marauders, it was helpful for managing Lupin's 'downtime' safely and registering might have revealed their motivation for learning the skill.
“Think of your parents.”
“He doesn’t have a happy memory with his parents.”
Ma’am 😭😂
Sirius Black did attack the Fat Lady painting. He wanted to get in the Gryffindor common room to find Peter and kill him. And a lot of people have already mentioned regarding the origin of the map and the marauders and how Sirius escaped! 🙂
Sirius had been able to get into Hogwarts secretly by using the secret tunnels not everyone knew about.
Other examples include :
•Voldemort meaning "Flight of death" or "Theft of death".

Fun fact: Snape's actor is such a joker. He put a fart bag in Daniel Radcliffe's (Harry) sleeping bag so when Snape and Dumbledore were doing that Great Hall scene where everyone's asleep, the fart bag would make noise during the speech. 😅
A little mishap: although the intro scene looks cool with the title and all, it's a plot mistake.
If you read the books he shows back up but he is at st mungos wizard hospital which none of the movies talk about
So mad they cut that out of the movie that was a great chapter in the books
When Harry saw himself doing the patronus, at first, he thought he saw his dad because he looks so much like him. Seeing his dad gave him the happiness necessary to conjure such a powerful patronus.
I always thought it was happiness because in that moment he knew he had the power and confidence to cast it (believed in himself, finally) because he had already done so, but I like yours too
Yeah as he said, he knew he could do it because he had already done it; and I believe in the book he says the memory was the thought of being able to live with Sirius and leave the Dursleys.
Nope. It was the thinking about leaving the Dursley's home and go living with Sirius.
Someone probably already commented, the great Michael Gabon took the role of Dumbledore for the great Richard Harris who sadly passed away.
And we recently lost Michael Gambon
Love the reaction❤
So Sirius did attack the portrait of the Fat Lady, because he was trying to get to Scabbers (aka Peter).
A few weeks ago, in London, to celebrate 20 years of The Prisoner of Azkaban, they put a flying baloon of aunt Marge near the Tower Bridge.
Epic !
Big fan of the channel. I love how free you both are with your emotions!
Yeah... So true.
That is such a kind compliment thank you!
@@lenakohl2339 True. But she would not give them the story, and the production team for the movies still made their own choises for their movies
This has always been my favorite of the books, which is why I’m so happy that the film ended up being my favorite too. This is the only film of the series directed by Alfonso Cuaron and I absolutely love the tone, feeling & ambience he gave it.
Fun fact: Michael Gambon ( Dumbledore) as a joke put a fart machine in Harry’s sleeping bag.
The bloopers for that scene are elite! 😂 Rip Alan Rickman.
-Harry: flying (and an affinity with glass)
-Hermione: spellcasting
-Hagrid: magical beasts
-Seamus: explosives
-Snape: potions
-Dumbledore: fire (this becomes more obvious as the franchise goes on, but the rare phoenix is a BIG clue)
I would also say Lupin knows the subconscious (which makes him a great teacher and counselor, especially for those entering puberty).
Hermione thought he took the potion. If a werewolf drinks the potion, they still turn but remember who they are.
I read the books, and I love the movies because I feel they stand on their own. For one thing, the cast is amazing, and although the movies lack some of the context, they still do a good job of bringing the story to life.
i'm so far in your guys reaction videos and catching up, so not sure if you'll see this but here are some facts about prisoner of azkaban :
- in the film, professor trelawney tells harry that the dark lord (voldemort) will rise again and while it takes another movie to happen, she's correct. she also says that a servant who has been changed for 12 years will help, which turns out to be right as well. peter pettigrew has been ron's rat for that length of time, and he plays a key role in making voldemort rise once more.
In the book the one that was helping Sirius was Crookshanks.
So love the bond luptin and harry have as well as sirius and Harry's
“You’ll suffer, but be happy about it.” One of the slickest lines of this movie and brilliant foreshadowing for the entire series.
Yes that was Sirius Black in dog form that we saw at the beginning however when he fell he has one arm got thrown up which is how you signal the Knight Bus to come get you which is why it showed up and took him away
Remus lupine was not helping Sirius Black get into the castle he was also thinking he was guilty until Harry told him about seeing Peter Pettigrew on the map the map was made by the Marauders which was serious black padfoot Remus Lupin Mooney James Potter Harry's dad prongs and Peter Pettigrew wormtail Scentsy helped make them up a new how it worked he knew that Peter Pettigrew had to be alive and if he was alive obviously serious black hadn't killed him so that let him figure out that he was innocent so when he saw serious black drag Ron and Pettigrew into the tree on the map he ran out to go help forgetting his potion that would let him keep his mind as a werewolf.
These two are a lot of fun.
And Azkaban is my favourite of the HP movies
I only mentioned this as it doesn't disclose the plot in any significant way..😃
The end of the book goes into more detail on the implications and who knows what but i always loved this exchange between Harry and Dumbledore:
"Last night I thought it was my dad who'd conjured my patronus. I mean, when I saw myself across the lake, I thought I was seeing myself."
"An easy mistake to make," said Dumbledore softly, "i expect you'll tire of hearing it but you do look extraordinarily like James, except for the eyes... You have your mother's eyes. "
Harry shook his head.
"It was stupid, thinking it was him," he muttered, "I mean, I knew he was dead."
"You think the dead we have loved ever truly leave us? You think we don't recall them even more clearly in times of great trouble? Your father is alive in you Harry, and shows himself most plainly when you have need of him. How else could you produce that particular Patronus? Prongs rode again last night."
It took Harry a moment to realize what Dumbledore had said
"Last night Sirius told me all about how they became Animagi," said Dumbledore smiling. "An extraordinary achievement -- not least keeping it quiet from me. And then I remembered the most unusual form your Patronus took when it charged down Mr. Malfoy at the
That "lady" (Harry's aunt, Vernon's sister) is Pam Ferris who played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda.
This remains one of my favorite of the entire series. So good on so many levels.
not her asking if there won't to be any death... ohhh my sweetheart... little do you know
That was really cute when she took his hair out of his mouth in the beginning intro.❤
🪄🦌✨️
By the way, the author, JK Rowling got the idea for the Dementors from the deep serious depression that she suffered when she was a young divorced poor single mother.
They actually gave him that room after he got his first Hogwarts letter. It was part of trying to confuse the wizrad.
“The cuteness factor” yup that goes away after the 2nd one 😂
I always loved that although Snape was incredibly angry with the trio, when he saw the werewolf, he immediately tried to protect them
I love both of your reactions to the film!
