2001 Isuzu Rodeo - Fuel Pump Replacement - Part 2

  • In this video, I demonstrate the steps required to remove and replace the fuel pump in my 2001 Isuzu Rodeo with the 3.2L engine. I replaced my pump for two reasons: 1) The fuel sending unit had failed and was no longer sending accurate readings to the fuel gauge and had caused check engine code P0463 to flash, and 2) I had low fuel pressure at the fuel rail, which I believe was causing the vehicle to run poorly.
    I saved myself over $600 by performing this repair myself. However, please only attempt this if you feel you are capable of doing so, and please be very careful when working under your vehicle and when working around the fuel tank. Use caution! I take no responsibility for your safety.
    Click the link below to view the planetisuzoo.com forum thread in which I got help with wiring the new harness:

    I agree with everyone else here Matt, you made an excellent video and it was very helpful and much appreciated. I just finished changing out my fuel pump on my wife's 2000 Rodeo and I have to say, the use of the straps to help lift the tank and position the jack was genius. I wish I would have come across your video when I had to do this job on my pickup a few months ago! Raising a tank with a 1\4 of a tank of gas in it is a pain in the Arse! It's the part of the job I dread, seeing as am always doing these jobs solo. Thanks again!

      imagn20 Thanks so much for your kind words! It is always encouraging to hear that one of my videos was actually helpful. Great work on repairing your wife's Rodeo by yourself. We've got to keep these Isuzus on the road!

    Cheers mate! Got some start up and low idle issues to the point it'll stall out. Replaced fuel and air filters. I'm just waiting to run my fuel down to make it a lot easier to do on my own. I'll check and replace the spark plugs too. Thanks for your super helpful videos helping a bloke out in Australia

    Hey dude, I have the same suv. The lack of power is because the hose going to the EGR is clogged with carbon. If you manually open the throttle body, you can see a small 1/4inch opening towards the bottom behind the throttle body. Clean it with a wire brush for tubes and then put carb cleaner through line starting at the EGR end. There is even a small bolt to remove just right below the EGR. Remove that with an Allen wrench and clean it as well. The tube is a right angle tube. Run carb cleaner through the line as if you were blowing it’s nose. Once this is done. Then your truck will run like a BEAST! I’ve owned 2 Isuzu rodeos, a 99 and an 01. I have done this for both. It works every time.

    Nicely done. I just completed the same job on my 1998 GMC Sierra 305. I cut a hole in the bed box over the pump area. Had easy access. My 1998 Honda Passport has the same problems you speak about. I may not get at it until spring as it is getting very cold up in Northern Ontario. You make it seem much easier. Thanks for spending time to make these 2 films part 1 and 2.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      r1bourg Thanks for the compliments! I contemplated going the "access hole" route, but I didn't want to mess with pulling back the carpet, and something about using a grinder/cutoff wheel right next to the fuel tank made me nervous! Haha.
      I got very lucky in that my tank mount bolts were not rusted at all. I live in Virginia, and we have moderate to mild winters, so my vehicle's undercarriage is not nearly as corroded/rusted as it seems many are in northern areas. If you can get the bolts off without much trouble, it really isn't that bad of a job. I expected it to be much worse. Good luck on your swap!

    I am surprised that you did not lube the O ring before assembly. This helps to allow it to move with the assembly ensuring that it does not wrinkle or otherwise get messed up. Good video. I am facing this job soon.

      @mattpayne4087  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great advice, and in hindsight, that would have been a good thing to do to insure the O-ring didn't tear or wrinkle. Thanks for pointing that out!
      Good luck with your pump replacement - I hope it goes smoothly for you! Thanks for watching.

    Just watch your video last night , I could not find anything on a 2002AXIOM and it was almost identical except I think the axiom has a smaller tank.Anyway , excellent video followed the simple steps you outlined and I was done in 4hrs.Solved the issues with pump fuel gage and poor idle performance.My replacent pump came with a harness that was a perfect color code match so that part was very simple.Just wanted to say "THANKS" saved me about $1000.00 on labor repairs.Great job!!!!.

      ***** Jason, I'm glad to have helped! I can kind of identify with you - I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with my Rodeo these days. I keep thinking I've got it running well, and then another little issue pops up. I think part of that is just how it goes with a 14 year old vehicle. I will say this, though - when this vehicle runs well, I absolutely love it. It is safe (I was in a bad rear-end accident in another Rodeo years ago and it protected my sister and I extremely well), will go anywhere and handle any conditions, and is comfortable. I plan to keep mine as long as it will keep going.
      Were you able to do the pump swap? How did it go?
      Thanks for watching!

      ***** I want to join in here as well and say I LOVE my Rodeo....and I HATE my Rodeo! HA! Yes, I think they are well built, sturdy, do great four wheeling...but ugh..going on any long trip, this thing will wear you out. So bumpy and uncomfortable...AND TERRIBLE gas mileage! Well, at least mine is but perhaps that's because I need to do a few things Matt has done. But again, mine has over 200K miles on it, and it sounds tight!

    Great Detailed Video I have the same vehicle I need your advise. I got check engine code P0446 the whole vapor canister unit was replaced and the fuel pump. After that check engine light still triggered and the mechanic told me its the fuel pressure sensor sitting on top of the fuel pump unit. But, doesnt make sense cause that fuel pump is brand new and so is the fuel pressure sensor. Please advise thanks

      Great question! My memory is a little fuzzy on this, but I believe I simply placed the pump in the tank, sat the tank on the ground near the vehicle with the wiring harness and fuel lines connected, and turned the ignition to the "run" position to see if I heard the fuel pump trying to prime. I'm fairly certain I also tested to see if I had fuel pressure at the fuel rail - I have a video about checking fuel pressure that you can view at the following link:

    Smooth process. I wasn't prepared for the plug change. Is there anything special that I should do to rebuild the fuel pressure?

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! To rebuild fuel pressure, you should be able to turn the ignition to on (but engine off) for a few seconds and then back off, and then repeat that once or twice. That's all you should need to do to reestablish the pressure at the fuel rail.
      Good luck! Let me know how your repair goes.

    Matt You are the Mannnn and twice over, I have a 98 & a 99 rodeo and both gauges are not working and I am having the task to follow your lead, I do have a Motorcycle jack which may be better than a floor jack and I too is in Va. Also clean your intake with some carb cleaner where the butterfly is that will help and clean the small screen with some sensor cleaner only it required to use sensor cleaner only and see the video on You tube for that., Also check you idle control valve and spry clean that as well for idle control. Yes these 2 rodeos I have have taught me a lot they are like children but dependable children. Again Great Job.

      To answer your question - yes, I have had great luck with the Delphi pump I installed about 2 years ago. Knock on wood...I haven't had any issues at all since I installed it. I am 99% sure that Delphi was the OEM pump manufacturer, and they seem to make good products. I figure the original pump lasted ~13 years, so I should be good to go for a while.
      Good luck with your installation!

      @mattpayne4087  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gionn07 You're welcome! I'm sorry to hear you're still having issues with the fuel gauge, though. It sounds like the wiring of the new pump may not be correct. Did the wires on the new pump exactly match the wires on the old pump? Assuming you installed a new pump assembly (meaning the pump and sending unit, as opposed to just installing a new pump and re-using the sending unit, which is the floaty thing that attaches to the pump), then your fuel gauge should be working.
      I hope that makes sense, and is helpful.

    • @gionn07

      Hello Matt!! no.. I just installed the sending unit, not the entire pump... I did the same repair on a '98 Rodeo and was happy with the results. Now, I have '99 Amigo and the gas gauge does not work but will let me know when I'm really low on gas when the light starts flashing. It has been a while since I've done this and was a great tutorial. Although, I CRINGED when you said and did remove the sending unit retaining ring with a steel screwdriver to remove the fuel pump/sending unit. One should never use a steel tool (screwdriver or punch). Please only use a "BRASS" punch since it will not create a spark if you should slip or hit a steel one too hard. Unfortunately, I live in a northern climate and the entire underside of my Isuzu's bolts are completely rusted and obviously will not be as easy as your job. Also, using a floor jack to balance a fuel tank can be tricky (I've done it). I found using an "ATV" jack is much more stable.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a great thing to point out, and I wish I had used some common sense and pointed that out when I filmed the video. Thankfully I didn't blow myself up or burn the house down!
      I definitely lucked out with the mounting bolts being so easy to back off. And yes, doing this repair by myself with only a floor jack was incredibly tricky, and probably borderline unsafe. I was proud of my solution, but in all honesty, I should have waited until I had someone that could help me lower the tank.
      Thanks for watching!

      Josesito Bran Unfortunately, you will still have to lower the fuel tank from the vehicle. I believe the only step you will NOT have to do is actually remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank. You should be able to remove the pressure sensor from the pump with the pump still mounted in the tank. Just be VERY careful - the pressure sensor is delicate and breaks easily. I know, because I broke one in the process.
      Other than that, the entire process should be the same as what I detailed in my videos. Good luck!

    Hey Matt: Did you measure your Fuel Pressure prior to swapping out the pump? My Passport acting bad, threw timing belt when valve dropped (128K) bent valves in BOTH heads due to carbon build up so replaced both heads water pump timing belts pulleys etc. NOW it has no power, checked timing seem right after 5 times pulling valve covers & test driving... I get "#1 cylinder misfire" and "injector circuit 2 Open." when the ECM is connected up to my scanner. Any ideas?
    thanks Mark

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark, I'm not a professional mechanic, but to me your issue sounds like it's either related to a clogged/bad injector, or it could be spark-related. I would probably start by unplugging the fuel injector connection on that cylinder while the engine is running. If the engine idle doesn't change, then you know you are not getting ignition in that cylinder. I would also try swapping the #1 coil with another coil (any other except #6 - I believe that one is different). If your problem migrates to a new cylinder, then you know you have a coil problem.
      To answer your question, I did measure fuel pressure prior to changing my pump and it was about 34-35 psi with ignition on/engine off, and about 30-32 psi with engine on. I have not been able to accurately test since doing my pump swap because my tester started leaking. My Rodeo is still running poorly sporadically though, so I still have an issue somewhere.
      Good luck with your troubleshooting. I hope you can figure it out. Let me know how it goes....I'm always curious about stuff to watch out for on my vehicles.
      Thanks for watching!

      *****
      Hi Matt:
      yes I did the un plug the injectors and coils BOTH resulted in a decreased eng speed and stumbling on each case on ALL Coils and ALL injectors so not sure what is causing it. I know these things have Wiring Issues that (cheap wire sizes materials leaves cracked wires to/from coils & injectors. doing the heads means tearing wires all out & twisting (&^& out of them to get it back together maybe that is OUR problems...
      I also have the level sender issue & have new sender on way to replace... should have checked pump pressure it has 126k but ran fine prior to the valve dropping.
      I will try swapping coils & injectors to other locations too if the problem stays with the same two cylinders, so far not driven it in LONG time & will drain old gas as that might be part of it its over a year old.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      mar matt Well dang. I hate gremlins like that. Yeah I would check your fuel pressure. If the vehicle has been sitting for that long, it could very possibly be as simple as bad fuel, or your pump could have crapped out after sitting for so long. If your fuel pressure checks out, I guess you could always pull the fuel rail and test the injectors. I think you could lift the rail off enough to stick the fuel injectors into some clear plastic bottles and then fire the engine to see if they are all spraying properly. Beyond that, I'm at a loss as to what to suggest....I'm just not that experienced with thus stuff. I would post your question on www.planetisuzoo.com and ask for help....I guarantee someone more knowledfeable than me will try to assist you.
      Question for you regarding your bent valves....what engine do you have? It was my understanding that the 3.2L DOHC Isuzu engine (which was also used in the Passports) is a non-interference type, meaning the paths of travel of the valves and pistons never intersect, so even if the timing gets off, no physical damage will occur. Is this the engine you have?

      ***** hI mATT:
      Yes SAME Engine3.2 DOHC (POS) that everyone has complained about & should have been recalled... The Frames rot real bad too, mine is OK but been undercoated every other year... Just re-did it & should have done fuel pump 1st but oh well... I have replys in a post on there & how I got to YOUR vid while looking at methods of pulling tank. which helps but hope my bolts come out...
      My eng the valve washer between cam & cup popped up and the cam smashed it & valve into eng. I was at 60MPH at time on highway & almost got wrecked because it killed eng...
      One issue is I think I missed some Vacuum Lines I can post pics but one is missing and I can't find where it should have been or go there was a bit of line stuck to it and I thought I got em all on but somewhere something is messed up..

    I am interested in picking up a 2003 Isuzu Axiom. The guy says it's a fuel pump that needs replacement and the vehicle is not starting because of it. Does this sound true? Could it be something else as to why as it won't start or is he pretty accurate? Can't fully trust craigslist people if you know what I mean. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Adams James, unfortunately it's virtually impossible to diagnose a no-start condition over the internet, as it really could be caused by any number of things. Obviously for ignition/combustion to occur, you need fuel, spark, and air all present in the combustion chambers at the correct time. Your issue could very well be fuel-related, but it's tough to say there's nothing else going on without doing some investigating. The easiest thing to do would be to check for fuel pressure first, since the seller says the issue is related to the fuel pump. You can purchase an inexpensive fuel pressure test kit like this:
      www.harborfreight.com/fuel-injection-pump-tester-92699.html
      The test gauge will screw onto the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. With the ignition on, but engine off, I believe the fuel pressure should be about 38-40 psi. If your fuel pressure is significantly less than that, you can be reasonably sure that the fuel pump has at least something to do with the no-start problem.
      Good luck!

    Have a question? We are buying a 1999 Honda Passport and the fuel guage is messing up. We have read that it could be a fuel sensor. Would it help to replace the fuel pump? It seems that this happens with Passports....

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennifer, yes, unfortunately that is a pretty common issue. I have owned 2 Rodeos (which is identical to a Passport....Honda just took stock Rodeos and re-badged them), and have had the fuel sending unit (which provides the fuel level signal to the fuel gauge on the dash...it is the float looking thing with the thin arm attached to the pump) go bad 3 times between the 2 vehicles. That was the main reason that I dropped my fuel tank and filmed this video. Replacing the fuel pump was a secondary project. But, since the fuel sending unit attaches to the fuel pump, and since you have to lower the fuel tank and remove the pump just to replace the fuel sending unit, it really makes no sense to replace one and not the other in my opinion. So, your issue is almost certainly related to the fuel sending unit, but I would absolutely replace the pump at the same time if you decide to replace the sending unit.
      I installed a Delphi pump/sending unit, as that is supposed to be the original equipment manufacturer. I would NOT purchase a pump/sending unit made by Airtex, as I have heard nothing but bad experiences with them.
      Good luck with your new Passport! A lot of people like to speak poorly of Isuzus, but from my experience, if you take care of these vehicles, they will take care of you. I was involved in a very serious rear-end accident that was another driver's fault, and my 2000 Rodeo did an amazing job of protecting my sister and me. We both walked away unscathed. I already loved my Isuzu before that experience, but that only cemented my loyalty to the brand.
      Thanks for watching!

      Jennifer Hicks You're quite welcome! It's great that your husband is able to tackle projects like this on his own...it definitely helps save money, and gives you the confidence that the work is done correctly. No one will care about your vehicle's maintenance as much as you/your husband do.
      Also, in case you/your husband haven't checked it out yet, I definitely recommend visiting www.planetisuzoo.com for any questions related to your Passport. I know NOTHING compared to most of the members on that forum, and what I do know, I learned there. The forums there are a tremendous resource, and they are one of the friendliest places on the internet, too. [Disclaimer - I am in no way affiliated with that site and get nothing for mentioning it....I just know how helpful it has been to me, and I want to see others be able to keep their Isuzus (and Passports) on the road for years to come. It seems most mechanics these days don't care to try to repair these vehicles when something goes wrong, so we owners have to stick together and help each other out....]
      Best of luck with the fuel pump/sending unit, and enjoy the "new to you" vehicle! They are fun trucks.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lonell, you don't HAVE to replace the entire fuel pump, but the fuel sending unit is attached to the fuel pump, so either way, you will need to lower the fuel tank and remove the fuel pump assembly. Because of that, I would strongly recommend replacing the entire fuel pump. It costs a bit more, but this is not a project you want to have to do again in a few months because the fuel pump stopped working.
      Good luck!

    Matt, EXCELLANT video! Don't know anything about you but you certainly have a nack for training, radio (great voice) and producing great videos. Now..if you only lived here in Spokane, WA I'd have you come over and do MY Rodeo 2000. I'm having the exact same problem. Thanks again for producing this and sharing it. (I haven't read the comments yet so you probably have already been asked this, but did you film this ALL using your camea on the phone? If so, what phone? (I'm guessing an iphone, if so, which model?) Thanks again.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Mooter Paul, I'm truly flattered by your kind words! It's funny - I actually HATE hearing my own voice played back via a recording; it sounds much different than what I hear when I speak. Putting myself out there on the internet was kind of a large hurdle for me to overcome when I first contemplated making a few videos, so I guess it's good to know that not everyone hates listening to me talk.
      As for the fuel pump replacement...I was pretty intimidated going into the project, but honestly, it ended up being easier than I anticipated. With that said, I got lucky and didn't have any rusted tank mounting bolts; I suppose if you run into a problem getting those off, this could turn into a nightmare. I think anyone with a little courage and patience can handle this, so if you have any mechanical skills at all, you should be good to go.
      I did film the entire video with the camera on my phone; it is a Samsung Galaxy S4. I've been really amazed at how good the quality of the video is, and how well it is able to focus on close-up objects. However, that quality is totally dependent on the lighting conditions. I try to film with the flash on all the time, as I've discovered that the video quality suffers tremendously in low-light situations. It would be nice to have a dedicated video camera with a tripod when filming a project, but the phone has worked out really well as a substitute.
      Thanks again for your kind words! Good luck with that fuel pump project.

    • @paulmooter9797
      @paulmooter9797 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** No kidding? An S4? that's what I have! Hmmm, maybe I'll make a video. Of course it would be one of me complaining on how difficult it is for someone with arthritis to even turn a bolt! HA! I'm sitting here in a auto repair show because I chickened out replacing my AC Compressor and related equipment on my own...and of course it's costing me over $1000.00 bucks...sigh. But I just couldn't handle all the 'other' things, so...I'm paying the price..dang. If it was just a matter of R&Ring the compressor that would be possible, but everything else was just too much. Anyway, thanks again for the great job on all your videos.

    • @mattpayne4087
      @mattpayne4087  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Mooter Yeah, the S4 has really done great for me. I've been really surprised at how well the video turns out in good lighting conditions.
      Sorry to hear about your AC issues...but hopefully after getting that sorted out you'll be problem free for a long time to come.
      Thanks again for watching and commenting!

      Great job Matt! I have a 1998 isuzu rodeo 4x4.. I have it idling high right now.. Been dealing with this issue for a few weeks now... I wanna try to figure out whats wrong with it myself before i take it to a mechanic where i know they're going to charge an arm n a leg.. I changed out most sensors already( IAC, AIR CHARGE TEMP SENSOR, TPS SENSOR,) I also removed the throttle body n gave it a good clean and checked for any vacuum leaks.. I recently changed out the fuel pump n the problem persists.. Ive gotten a fuel headaches from this issue but I won't give up.. Is there anything you can tell me or help me with that might be causing this idle surge? It doesnt happen all the time, thats what baffles me.. Only when the truck is cold, sometimes goes up to 2500 to 3000 rpm... Its really been wasting me gas... Once ive ran it for awhile n stop somewhere n restart it, the truck idles PERFECT! 900-1000rpm

    Matt, just wanted to send a HUGE thank you for taking the time and effort into making this video!. Great angles, explanations, heads up (fuel line clips)....just full-on excellent. Due to a check engine light and a bad fuel level gauge it wouldn't pass inspection. So I watched your vids and put a new AIRTEX E8486M (from RockAuto, thanks ;) in my 2002 Rodeo 4 cylinder today! It went really smooth minus the wire splicing...mine car didn't have a grey color like the diagram so it took me 20-30 minutes to finally find the right page with the right colors (link below).
