  • As the lights fades at dusk on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands - Australia's most remote territory - low tide reveals ancient turtles starving and dying in a milky lagoon.
The lagoon is situated at the end of a 2km long runway. Defence has big plans for that runway, planning to spend half a billion dollars to reinforce it to take high-tech military spy planes.
Marine scientists and locals fear the turtles' key source of food, seagrass in the lagoon, is under threat from proposed further development.
