I have been scuba diving at and around Cocos Island. We slept aboard a small ship but took a couple of trips onto the island. It was very beautiful and it's wonderful that the Costa Rican government does not allow people to stay on the island (except scientists). Diving in the area was exciting and gorgeous. I will never forget that trip and it was about 25 years ago.

Wy is it good to limit people freedoms? Governments overstretch their authority far too often. The Earth and it's creature innately belong to know one.. no one 'owns' the Earth or any part of it. The Earth owns us and can tare our civilization to pieces with natural disasters. If a child of the planet wishes to be blessed by the beautiful nature it created by being there no other child of the planet should have authority to stop it. These flaws in our civilization including the nasty cartels among other things is why I loath my species and wish for our complete destruction unless things change.

It was so nice to see Coco's Island having a video dedicated for this slice of paradise on earth, making the heart of this proud Tica fill with happiness (hi from a faithful supporter from Costa Rica 🇨🇷) . And the true treasure of the island is her amazing biodiversity both on the island and on his waters. Is a journey that if you are able to do, will connect you with nature in ways impossible to describe with words.

The history of the island really is interesting.
Yet so much of it has been lost or destroyed over the centuries. Take the ship the show say they found in the swamp. If there really is a 16th or 17th century ship in there, so much information about it has been lost by ripping it out of the swamp with an excavator. It makes me cringe.

My grandmother (departed) once told me about an old silver coin in the family that her father, my great-grandfather, found on Cocos Island in 1905.
Her father gifted it to her first daughter, my aunt, before he died 1954. That, GG-pa said with a smile "de Bonito Benito". Put in the 15 day old baby's hands and croaked. It can't be..... Can it?

    • @andersjjensen
      @andersjjensen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

There may have been a treasure on the island... but you can be sure as hell that it's been found a long time ago. But there may have been coin dropped as someone tried to drag the loot home. Precious metals are a whole lot heavier than people first anticipate. A large crate of gold coin weighs a literal ton...

Great stories, awesome story teller. I’ve been to Canu Island off Costa Rica, which is a Biological Reserve with a similar history. I spent the day diving and picnicking on the beach. The wall of jungle bordering the beach appears nearly impenetrable, I was so intrigued by the absolute wilderness. I would have loved to have “slipped in” and lived there for awhile. I felt a huge sense of loss as we sailed away at the end of the day, as it is illegal to hike in off the beach

So basically pirates are like squirrels: they bury stuff and then they either die or they forget where they put it

A seven foot tall statue of the Madonna would way more than a ton. Probably closer to 3000 lbs. This whole tale, as fun as it is, has the ring of a "sea story." In that vein, you should have begun with the phrase, "This is no Sh*t."

today, the Lima treasure (whilst it has much cash value)
would be more interesting for its archeological significance
it would be of great cultural significance to find such a hoard, especially given that it purportedly contains both early South American Catholic relics and objects repurposed from the Inca civilization... something we do not have enough of for the research of that period...

I'm not very up to snuff on the legalities of treasure-hunting, but wouldn't that treasure belong to Costa Rica anyway as an archeological find? If that's the case, I'll honestly be more interested in the sharks and turtles.

If the items were documented as stolen or lost they are typically returned to the place of origin. Otherwise yes they would belong to the State they are found in and would go to whatever sort of Department of Antiquities they have.

    I heard about this island when I was 17 . I'm 45 now.
Had a dream about of building my own submarine and investigating this place. Ah...
The power of youthful imagination. Gonna go find it.
I'm currently looking for a gold mine in New Mexico.
