James Harrison’s beef with Roger Goodell saw massive fines, fiery quotes and zero winners

- James Harrison and Roger Goodell represent the perfect example of a workplace dynamic going to shit. Employee severely breaks the rules by repeatedly engaging in illegal hits. Bossman lays down the punishment of hefty fines. Leaving the employee to respond with an extremely pointed threat that he would rather let the commissioner burn than take the opportunity to piss on him to put out the flames. And that's just one of the many menacing remarks. In other words, it's a sure-fire recipe for beef.

One of the best nfl memes of the 2010s: any brutal hit by anybody could be responded to with “James Harrison was fined $25,000 for this play.” Evergreen.
And then later we saw Klay Matthews have the same thing happen

Harrison was a dirty player at times, he deserved the fines and suspensions. Harrison was also correct about Goodell and can't take that away from him.
Yeah, the cribs and mass hits I could give him being accidentally illegal hits, but that Mccoy hit clearly illegal and didn't look like he even tried to lead shoulder

This is beef of destiny. James Harrison was the hardest hitting player in the league. The league wanted to make hits less hard. It's an unstoppable force and an immovable object. Just how James likes it.
I though that was darenn " come on out rapist " sharper
I'm not a Roger Goodell fan, but accusing Goodell of not caring about player safety while literally destroying people physically on the field is hilariously hypocritical.
You know Goodell knowingly hid knowledge of CTE and the damage of concussions from the rest of the world, right?😂😭
@@zackhicks5320We've known that head trauma causes CTE since the 1920s when it was referred to as Boxer's Dementia. Although the national institute of health didn't even acknowledge this until 2022. Well Goodell is just the employee of the owners, he’s the face not the brain
🍖 shield
He's the Ronnie 2k of the NFL, he takes the heat from fans and players on behalf of owner then they replace him. Not that Goodell hasn't made some stupid decisions but getting mad at him for the CBA is like getting mad at the mailman for delivering your bills.
@@DesMcMahon-yc6qlno the NBA has someone for that job his name is Adam silver Ronnie2k is just a 2k employee.
And no that's not the case at all as your mailman has no control over that yet goddell actually has control ocer the league and is the one in charge of the bargaining of the CBA so yes there is plenty of reasons. You made 2 analogies in your comment and both of them were awful
It takes a lot to have Goodell be the sympathetic figure
Goodell is a work alright. Single handedly ruined a game by turning it into a business.
It’s always been a business my dude. But I’m sure the immense revenue growth, which the players share in, is ok with the players. If you presented them with the choice between none of the unpopular safety rules but the revenue levels will decline to the levels of the past where the top paid player in the league made a couple million a year or accept the rules and have the pay level they do now that they’d take the rules and revenues.
This was legendary. Harrison just won't budge, especially if he believes he's in the right. That's also a scary looking brotha and one of the last guys I'd want to piss off tbh
I think that hit messed Colt up long-term
Dude ran right into James Harrison. Stupid.
Could've been a starter for the browns longer for sure. He was doing pretty good for a bit there.

Honestly it's a good thing people aren't tackling like this anymore. The penalties are annoying, but I'll take flags over concussions

Hate the Stillers but love James Harrison. Wish we could have got him another ring when he came to the Pats.
This one wasn’t even a beef fr. As entertaining as Harrison was he was an extremely dirty player. Goddell was actually pretty reasonable with him
James Harrison was an absolute stud, this beef really overshadowed just how incredible he was for a good run of years. He wasn't just a really good pass rusher, he was an all-time run defender. He didn't set the edge, he blasted it into the backfield right into the running back if you were stupid enough to run it to his side. It was always awe-inspiring to see him just bully offensive linemen who had 75+ pounds and a foot of height on him. He just had so much power and the ability to gain leverage by getting low.
That said those hits against Cribbs and Massaquoi were grisly stuff, definitely not the kind of hits that should be allowed, and were rightly made illegal. That hit on McCoy shouldn't have led to a suspension, though, that was all Goodell pettiness. That wasn't a hit to the head, no matter how huge a shot it was.
So in short; James Harrison is a highly questionable character who still has more integrity than Roger Goodell.
The League went too easy on Harrison early on, so things got out of control.
I just noticed both the qb examples of devistating hits that left em on the ground and harris fined were Longhorn qbs
This is why he belongs in the Hall. Aside from the most impactful play in SB or NFL history and one of the best stretches of excellence from any defensive player... the dude changed the game. Player safety initiative all started because of James Harrison.

@@jordanfry5138 HA HA HA HA HA!!!
This is the most bullshit take I've ever seen. Player safety initiatives started due to a class action lawsuit taken against the nfl as they had been covering up cte. It was about protecting the business nothing else. Otherwise none of this would have ever happened
Got diagnosed with an IBD but I just can’t get enough of this BEEF
You should do you should do Bill Belichick vs the NFL
Goodell only cares about making the team owners and NFL share holders happy. He doesn't care about the players who put their bodies on the line week in and week out. It's the players who keep the NFL going not the owners or commissioner.
Exactly. Or the NFL wouldn't have Thursday night football
...That's his job. The players have the NFLPA and the owners have the commissioner. The player could have demanded no Thurs games and no 17th game, but didn't (or backed off of those demands).
And the decisions he makes aimed to maximize the revenue of the league directly benefit the players considering the money and benefits available to plays all stems from the overall pot of revenue the league brings in. The more money the league makes directly leads to players earning more money as well as their split of the pie goes up as well. And the same players who get upset that Gooddell only focuses on how to maximize the money are more than happy to receive the higher salaries that the money fuels. And I feel confident that if you actually presented to the players the choice between getting the rules to be exactly what they want them to be but the league revenue shrinking to the levels of the past and the salaries doing the same or accepting that some of the rules put in place won’t be what they want but they get to benefit from the substantially larger revenue pot that has players making way more than the past that they choose to earn the higher money.
