    This world is lacking so much empathy. I've had mental health issues while I was in school & I couldn't even focus on my classes at one point. I really thought this was common sense that Simone could've really hurt herself dealing with mental health issues while still in the competition. When you're mentally not all there you could hurt yourself when it comes to small things too. If you're cutting food you could easily lose focus because your mind is wandering and cut your finger (maybe a knick or maybe a good portion and have to get stitches). When she first came out with her statement the first thing I thought of was I'm glad she's stepping back because she could've broken her neck & ended up paralyzed. Why is that not the first thing people thought of? This is a very dangerous sport.

      I think the concept of mental health is still very taboo in many countries and societies around the world. We, as humans, have made strides when it comes trying to understand how the mind effects ones body. But we still have a ways to go. As someone who has been diagnosed with major depression in the past, it can be hard for others to relate to your situation if they have never experienced it themselves, witnessed it first hand, or know what to look for.

    • @com.passionatebitch
      @com.passionatebitch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mandarue5104 yeah, and I find it ironic that social medias (like tiktok) filled with videos that are encouraging others to accept their mental health problems but then say things like, _"It's okay to let go, you know nobody will love you. So just let go."_ this generation is fortunate to reach an era where psychology has advanced well enough, yet the society's view of it is still just as outdated and misunderstood. Mental health awareness is great but a good portion of people are left with just being familiarized without being educated about it one bit. It's so odd that awareness is not enough for them to look deeper into things. A different level of laziness/ignorance.

    Honestly, this is proof of the kind of pressure people have put on that girl. She is an amazing gymnast who won a whole lot of medals for her country and instead of being grateful for her contributions, they only expect her to do more. I mean, she was suffering from a condition that could have really badly injured her considering how dangerous gymnastics can be, but she was still in a position where instead of taking a step back and a break, she had to train even harder to be able to win a medal!

      I’m sorry but she was the one who called herself the goat, put goat emblems on her merchandise and made millions by promoting herself as the greatest Gymnast of all time. She created her own legend and then fell under the pressure she created herself. She’s not a child but a professional athlete, if she was struggling with mental health then nothing was stopping her from stepping down, flying home and recovering in private. How is continuing to court the press and disrupting the Olympics for the other gymnasts helping her, all she’s doing now is affecting the mental health of the other competitors, it’s a selfish, narcissistic action.

    It’s truly amazing how much hate and judgement she has gotten for her time at the Olympics.
    Everyone is throwing is treating her like some Robot and must win everything.
    She’s human. She’s had an off period and just sadly for her it’s happened during the Olympics. She can’t control that. She can only do what’s best for her body.
    But she’s weak for not competing. She’s a child. She’s being a drama Queen.
    No. She’s listening to her body and choosing to give her body and career longevity by saying it’s not going right.
    She took private time to figure out her body and see if she can fix it.
    It must have been incredibly scary/frustrating/upsetting for her to experience this, and then not be able to fix what she wanted to compete.
    I feel for her completely. Everyone needs to take a chill pill.
    When you can do the things she does and compete at this level then you have a right to complain.
    I don’t think I’ve heard one top level gymnast say anything bad about her, other than she did the right thing.
    This gymnast is one of the most accomplished in history and yet she’s not done enough.
    She’s never gonna win in the eye of the public.

    So much goes into gymnastics mentally that some people don't understand! I used to do gymnastics and it's one of the most draining and toughest sports mentally. There is a lot more pressure on you mentally than physically in the sport and if you aren't in the right head-space it doesn't matter how many times you've done "x" skill it can be sooo hard and scary some days. If I had a bad day I wouldn't be able to do anything right and would just get hurt by pushing myself. It's so dangerous to mess up in gymnastics from the vault, beam, or bars, heck even floor with the passes elite gymnasts do and anything could go wrong if you aren't mentally okay. Plus Simone's skills are so difficult that would be especially dangerous for her or anyone for that matter whose her level. So please give her a break! I'm sure if something had happened to her during competition people would be criticizing her for not knowing her limits so if she feels like stepping back for a little is the best for her then let her be. I can't even imagine the stress Tokyo had on her.

    Truth be told I think Simone Biles's injure might not be a bad thing. If it weren't for her injury I don't think mental health in athletics would have gotten the same amount of media attention had some new rookie gotten it. In addition, her injury also open doors for other great athletes to win some medals and garner some media spot light such as Sunni Lee and Guan (who won the balance bar). All of this also exposed that less you're already a successful athlete like Simone, people couldn't care less of your condition which is kinda sad.

It be physically a toll on someone body and mind to try and be perfect and there always gonna be a hop here or there. Thank you for further explaining the dangers of Gymnastics, especially vertigo, or what you called the twisties. The people shaming her are appalling. You can easily paralyze yourself or break your neck and die on a good day in gymnastics, let alone if any mental blocks, vertigo, or unhealed injuries are involved. I did Gymnastics for 13 years and still live with daily pain and problems, but I'm alive. I don't think people understand what they were asking of her bc they have no clue what it takes to make effort look effortless in a sport like this. Thank you for trying to help people understand better how critical it was to her life to step away at such an important moment. Living trumps winning any day...bc if you live, you can win another day.

    • @demetriromano565
      @demetriromano565 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The line between mental and physical health is not always a clear divide. Neurological means it’s taking place in the brain, so mental health is a fair classification. When Biles said it was mental and not physical, she was probably referring to the fact that she wasn’t injured and her body was fine, but it was her head that was off. Really though it’s all intertwined especially in gymnastics.
